Full backup and restore? - G1 General

I am now using Rogers v3 rom for a while and I've applied many setting to it
Now I would like to try the Hero build but I am afraid it is not suitable for me.
Is there any method for fast and complete restoring the phone from new rom to old rom?

Yea, its called nandroid. Just make a nandroid backup then just fastboot and apply it.

It looks difficult for me to use
Any guide for me?

Whats difficult to you? Creating the back up or applying it. Do you have the new cyanogon 1.2 recovery?

I can find NANDriod in th recovery mode.
But I would like to ask, will NANDriod backup the apk on EXT3?

Thats a good question. I think it should because a nandroid backup will make an exact copy of your phone which should include the apps. But to be on the safe side you can either pull all your apps to your computer using ADB to backup or use an app to backup all your apps to your sd card then store them on your computer. I always keep backups of my .apks just in case something happens.

trouble with nandroid
I was also having trouble with nandroid. I read the three but its knot in join friendly terms. I have created the nandroid file in recovery using JF 1.42 recovery. But Im having trouble understanding just how to put it back I have the dev spl and all the other requirements.

1. Install SDK on your PC
2. Boot G1 into fastboot mode by pressing Camera+Power
3. Plug the USB and then press Back
4. Open CMD on PC and type the script

A question for the hack savvy
I was just wondering, if I did a full backup of my g1,could I use a hex editor to browse those backup files, and maybe find my sim lock code. If the answer is yes, I will post back with my results.

The new version of CM recovery (1.3.1) has restore capability without having to use fastboot.

unroot using only sd card?

Ok so My phone is not recognized by a computer, i have tried different drivers, cords, ROMs, no matter what I do my phone is not recognized. I took it to the sprint store and the tech there who also has a rooted hero couldn't get it to mount either, the phone just doesn't bring up any mount notification at the top. I have a nandroid backup with stock ROM but even when I do that it is still rooted, they will not give me a new one until it is unrooted. My only other option is to make an insurance claim since I cannot flash it back to stock.
My Question: Is there any way to flash to stock and get unrooted using only my SD card (I can plug it into my card reader and it works fine). Thank you for any help you can give.

Sorry to report, the only option of unrooting is RUU, and this requires HTC Synch and a definate recognition on your PCs part.
Suggestions, anyone?
What version of Windows are you running? I have had issues with Windows 7 in the past. As weird as it sounds once I loaded PDAnet from the market on to my phone and the PDAnet client onto my computer. My phone was recognized. Is your computer charging the phone when plugged in?
its possible.. but you'd need Flashrec, an unrooted original 1.5 rom, and the original recovery image..
ie: use the custom recovery to flash the unrooted rom, then flashrec to flash the original recovery image.. then remove flashrec..
just an idea!
This brings up another question....
What does Sprint actually check?
Do you really have to get back to 100% stock, or would putting the original recovery image on get you through?
Any current or former Sprint techs willing to chime in? Just how perfect do we have to get it?

Actually, that just might work! Great idea chavo, very intuitive thinking!
I take back my last statement. I read somewhere flashrec doesnt work after youv flashed your imahe....google the unlockrs method on flashing a new recovery once already rooted; i think it involves some adb though :-(
Idk, thats as much as i know
I know it works.. but I have an unrooted rom in a nandroid backup from when rooting the Sprint Hero first started.. lol not many people have those laying around, as most used the Asroot2 method of rooting and not Flashrec to flash the recovery.

Would that be enough? Of was it already too modified when I did the nandroid backup?

Your nandroid wont work on another phone, and if it did, it would synch your contacts to their phones, passwords, apps, the whole shindig. Bad idea
We'll have to beg a dev for a stock 1.5 rom
you can use a nandroid from another Sprint Hero.. done that too when i got my replacement phone! If anyones willing..
RUU, don't sign into google. Download and install Flashrec and flash the recovery through that and create a nandroid backup.. it will be clean

Once again, very intuitive thinking! I thought maybe nandroid was device specific.

Nandroid is device specific to a point.. If you go in to the nandroid folder on the SD card you will see a folder labled HT********** that is specific to your phone, however you can take a nandroid from another phone and place it in that folder and backup from that.
i'd do the RUU but i'm using the updated radio.
I use a mac, but if indeed it isn't the windows driver, and you have tried other roms, then it only leaves the kernel (and the usb cable and phone usb hwd ).
So use what ever methods you used for the rom flashing, and flash a kernel.
Some ideas : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=625940&page=1
( start at page 1 )
Just a thought.
isn't the nandroid image made right AFTER you root?
so then, that wouldn't be what you want.
Extract the stock rom from the RUU
ok.. here's an unrooted 1.5 Nandroid back up.
http://www.4shared.com/file/250722598/a6eddc31/NoRootNandroid.html
Download the zip, extract.. and place the folder NoRootNand on the SD card in SDCARD/nandroid/HT**********/
Boot into recovery, select restore as you would if you were restoring a backup you made -->Nand Restore-->HT**********--> and choose to restore NoRootNand
I'm using the RA-heroc-v1.6.2 recovery, so I am unable to verify if this is will work with an older recovery image.
if you have any questions feel free to ask.
Wow thank you everyone for all of the advice, i had all but given up hope since I had been all over google looking for an answer for about 2 weeks. I will try the nandroid backup above and report back. thank you everyone again, you may have just saved me an insurance claim.
Wow, glad I found this thread. I'm downloading that nandroid image right now because I'm going to probably end up taking my Hero in to get the dust cleaned out later this week. I think another option would be to extract the RUU and get the ROM.zip out of it, and then just flash that.

Nandroid Restore not working :(

I haven't used adb cuz i havent been able to set it up. But i have flashed Damaged control succesfully by mounting the zip on the sd card. i flashed it a couple times since ive tried installing Nexus one launcher by flashing from sd card but nothing just messed up rosie. i couldnt restore my older Rom it kept telling me use adb. Fail lol but i flashed damage control 2.05 back and working fine maybe faster. What i want to know is how to get the nandroid restore fixed or working for emergencies.
alt f4 fixes it all
huh? Confused..
he was trying to be "smart" and gave you a bogus answer if you combo press alt + F4 it will exit your screen... Not really sure what your question is though if you are asking as to why your Nandroid won't restore properly it's because you have to "wipe" your cache before doing a nandroid if you are going back to a version that is different than the currently flashed rom. Hope this helps if not then ... perhaps you could re-phrase your question.

The only way I fixed that is by running the nandroid restore through adb like it says to do. I don't understand how you don't have adb installed but you have the phone rooted? I had to get all that working to root my phone and having adb is an invaluable tool anyway.
I did read that the nandroid error sometime comes up when the sdcard is too full so you could see if that is the case. Also, as someone suggested you could try a factory reset/wipe and then try again to nandroid through recovery.

Yup,i don't even have a pc (seriously I don't)
I did run into this problem though, not sure exactly what I did but it worked itself out, maybe try flashing a different recovery image,Or try keeping phone plugged into charger(not sure what significance that has but it did seem to go for me after I was having those problems) which recovery image do you have?
Did you rename the Nandroid backup you were trying to restore to? If you did, and the file name has a space in it, it will tell you to restore via ADB. Just a thought from the limited info you provided.
I had this problem and it fixed itself out and all i did was wipe everything thats under the wipe option in recovery and it worked for me.
Yeah it was actually the cache you guys were right. i did it on my own and thought that might be it. and now i know that was it from checkin the thread. yeah i used pre kitchen to auto root my phone. im actually running damage control 2.05 now the newest sprint leak.damn i love it lol. but imma reflash it cuz i tried to flash a nexus theme/ no luck i want a nexus one interface!!!!!

Tips for my newly rooted Sprint Hero phone?

Hey! I'm a little new to the rooting and such on a
Android phone but yesterday I rooted and
installed Fresh Rom 1.1 on my Sprint Hero, and I
was wondering where is a good website to
download themes for this Rom? And if there is
any tips/cool things/ ect. ect. that you can do
with a rooted phone tell me please. Cause I'm a
noob as I said. . Thanks
Sent from my HERO200 using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
best advice I can give is read the how to WIKI's BEFORE doing anything else. ALWAYS read the first post of any rom that you want to try then re-read it just to make sure you understand if there are any problems and or fixes. also ALWAYS make a nandroid BEFORE you change anything with your phone. after all that just watch the boards and check out all the cool stuff.
edit: and I forgot the search button is in the upper right of the screen and will save you a lot of grief from the flamers
Thanks dood.
I just rooted mine, too and all I can say is read read read read. Try different things you're cmfortable with, and just enjoy how much better it is rooted.

Did you use fresh kitchen? I would make sure your recovery console is 1.6.2 as you can pick which nandroid you want to restore. Just nandroid before flashing a ROM or a Theme, so you can revert back to what you had before if something is not working.
The first nandroid you have should be the one with the stock ROM+root. I would take this and save it on your computer so you always have it.
I'd say that you should make a backup copy every time you change anything significant, or anything you do while booting in recovery.
Its probably not necessary to do it as often as I do, but I figure a few extra minutes of waiting for it to finish is worth not having the frustration of not being able to revert to a past state if something screwy happens.

I used the 'static wiki page how-to' for getting everything done, I think they supplied a link to this one: recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.img, which I guess is outdated... I'll look for the 1.6.2 version instead. You are correct, my first nandroid is the stock + root and I did save this to my computer, but I haven't nandroided since then because I didn't think I needed to. I think I will nandroid again now that I am on 2.1 ROM and then nandroid whenever I mess around with the recovery / new ROMS. Thanks guys.
For the 1.6.2, do I just repeat the sticky how-to for installing this recovery? I don't want to mess anything up since I already have the 1.5.2 recovery installed. Will it just overwrite?

Slide stock nandroid backup

In case you need to revert for warranty service or just for fun.
Taken from a never before booted unmodified unit. Enjoy!
http://www.4shared.com/file/T0ekY2XN/mytouch_slide_factory_nandroid.html
Note: These instructions assume a certain level of technical skill considering if you have the need to revert you have already rooted and flashed your devices at least once. Ensure you have flashed the factory version of the radio and splash1 partition prior to returning to this image for everything to be factory (note: splash1 can currently be nothing other than factory as there is not an SPL with security off at this time).
1) Unpack these files to your phones sdcard in to a directory named: clockworkmod/backup/factory
2) Boot in a ClockworkMod Recovery
3) Select wipe data/factory reset
4) Select nandroid; restore; select the directory named factory ; wait for restore to complete
5) Reboot
thanks for this. but noob question here: if i ever root & go flashin roms all willy-nilly, how would i apply this?
Nice. Thanks.
Thanks man, I'm gonna keep this saved on me PC for that "just in case" moment you might need it haha. Appeciate it.
Curious if anyone has performed a nandroid restore with the Slide via the stock/clockwork recovery method. My thinking here is if a nandroid restore is possible, with this backup we can return the phone to an absolute un-rooted stock state. Is that correct? Any insight is appreciated.

If you flashed the engineering rom make sure you apply the Newest_Slide_Radio.zip that ChiefzReloaded posted, that is the stock radio. The nandroid backup does not contain the radio.

You need to get in to clockwork recovery, which is currently loaded by the update.zip you use to root your phone. Once you are in there you select nandroid and restore, then flash these backup images to your phone.
If you get to the point you need to do it I would be happy to provide more detailed instructions!

You need to get in to the Clockwork Recovery to restore this. Follow the directions in the root how-to, when you apply that provided update.zip that is what gets you in to clockwork recovery.
Copy these files on to your sdcard (first, before anything else), get in to Clockwork Recovery, select nandroid, select restore, and point it to these images.
ok this sounds totally noob but I'm not sure what you mean by "point it to these images"

Won't boot in what way? Can you get into fastboot and/or recovery? Since you're asking about CWM, I'm assuming you can get into it.
If you did a Nandroid backup (the main point of CWM for me), you could try just restoring it. If you didn't, I'd try a wipe all settings and then reboot. You should be able to get back to a virgin state on the main OS that way.
I can get into it, the problem is i erase all data on my phone. Thanks in advance!

I'm still confused what your problem is.
You say the phone won't boot, but then you talk about erased data.
What exactly did you do to the phone? What was the last few things you did before you "broke" it?
What happens when you try to boot the phone (ie., it's powered off and you press the power button)? How far in the boot process does it go?
If your problem is that the phone boots but all your data is gone, there's no way to get back unless it auto-syncs down from Google, or you used a backup program like Titanium, or you made a nandroid backup in CWM.
If you made a nandroid, you should just be able to boot into CWM, select backup and restore and then restore your backup.
This is what happened....
I tried to replace my fonts in system that are supposed to work on a different phone. Then when i tried to boot up the phone was stuck on the silver google logo. Now, after that i went into clock work recovery and formated everything in the mounts and storage menu. After reinstalling the phones boot img, my phone freezes at the google logo. I can still get into the clockworkmod recovery. I never backed it up, but tried to use a nandroid someone posted online but i get a md5 mismatch.
Again, thank you for all your help!

Known issue. There is a thread in the Development section(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884499). The OTA "broke root."
Ouch. Now I understand.
In the future, always make a nandroid backup before messing around with things, easiest way to recover.
I see you're looking for help in this thread. Maybe they can help you.
You could also try flashing Doc's or Paul's roms also in that section.

The custom rom? No, you just go into recovery, wipe/factory reset, install from SD card, then navigate to where you put the .zip on the SD card.
I see you did try the 2.3.1 NAND backup in the development section. Try downloading it again on your PC, unzip it, then place the new folder on the clockworkmod's backup folder on your SD card. Again, do not rename it.

Be warned that if you do get the NAND to restore, you may lose clockwork recovery. I know I did when I first tried to use it.
Don't panic though, because you can fastboot flash clockwork back on from the bootloader.
