Hello,
sometimes (for example when I start Google Sync) my Phone (Polaris, Xda orbit 2)
opens a dataconnection (via UMTS). It's even doing this when I habe an active WLan
connection. The dataconnection is opened without any question dialog.
How do I forbid to open any dataconnections via UMTS?
How do I tell Google Sync to use the WLan connection?
Thanks,
Philip
settings->connections->connections->advanced->select network
pick my home network or my work network or whatever it's called
in yours then it will only be able to use wifi and activesync for data

Is there a way to disable or remove GPRS capability altogether? I don't have unlimited data and only wish to use wifi for inet access, but it keeps trying to connect to Cingular GPRS even though I removed it from the ISP settings completely.. Any ideas?

Goto
>Start >Settings >Connections > Network Cards > Network Adapters
In the "My Network card connects to:" prompt, select the value "Work" instead of "The Internet".
Did that, and if I go into IE and try to navigate to a page, it still says "Connecting to Cingular GPRS" and then connects to it... Any more ideas? It "might" be an IE-only problem since Agile Messenger tells me it can't connect when there is no connection, but IE is autoconnecting to GPRS no matter what settings I choose.
Call cingular tell them you want GPRS Data blocked, when they do it, your phone will show an x next to the signal strength indicator (where the GPRS/EDGE icon lives)
That sounds like the best idea so far... Anyone else got a better idea?

Also... after you do the above, goto >Start >Settings >Connections; and click on the "Connections" icon then click on the "Advanced" tab then click on "Select Networks" and choose "My Work Network" for both dropdown box. This should work.
Did all that.. IE still trying to connect to Cingular GPRS.. I tried to completely remove it from everything and somehow it still wants to connect if no connection exists already.. weird...

Thas wierd. It works on mine.. If no connection exists, IE will try to conenct to GPRS but it will fail on mine. It will only work when I am conencted to WiFi. Which ROM version do you have? I have 2.24.10.1 WWE.
if u disable this option can u still send MMS?
2.25 cingular as on the ftp under ROM_Other or whatever...

Is there any other way to do this??? I've been having the same problem with this new ROM. No matter what i do (select "My Work Network", fiddle with the GPRS settings), it ALWAYS wants to connect to the GPRS.
I'm having the EXACT same problem as the guy who started this post.
Thanks!
OK.. Either call the cell company and tell them to remove internet capabiltiy OR you can try REMOVING your "media Net" connection from your connections. It's in the place where you select between My ISP, Work, Media Net... Just go into Media Net and click on remove/delete or whatever and see if that works for ya.

it doesn't work, no matter what i do, it tries to connect via GPRS, and then it tries to dial a modem # starting with +1415XXXXXXX. its weird. i used to be able to just delete the ISP key, but not anymore. im running 2.24 Summiter ROM.
you can always create a new connection in connections and leave it blank, then it errors with a unable to connect message, and you can always switch it back if you want the access in the future
Any idea as to how you can switch off gprs automatically after each time checking your pop email??

Just curious,...why do you have this phone?
I have a Cingular 8125 (WIZA100) that I use about 50% of the time in areas that have no coverage. But, in those locations I do have access to many WiFi hotspots.
I too would like to disable GPRS search (my phone seems to spend much of its time trying to connect to the non-existent network.) Obviously calling the carrier does not help in this situation.
I assume there is a registry hack (or some such) to kill it. Has anyone found anything on the phone that will kill GPRS but keep WiFi Running?
Txs
I have not TRIED it but I would suggest trying out Opera as it probably is not integrated with GPRS as much as IE is. Just a hunch I am going to try as well.
How do you select what network connection to use? 99% of the time I only ever want the phone to connect to the internet over Wifi (or bluetooth/cable connection to the computer) and not using Cingular's network. There is the occasional time that I would like to enable that but most of the time I want to only use the Wifi. Where can I set so it doesn't connect to Cingular accidentally (say if I'm out of Wifi range or hit the wrong button) so i don't get large data charges?
Thanks
In connexion option set default internet connexion as "my work network" and privat network default as "my work network" as well.
So lemme just confirm something - unless I configure server settings on the a HTC TyTN (using stock rom) on the Cingular network - it will not be able to use Cingulars network right? The only time I will be able to access the internet with the phone is over wifi, bluetooth connection (or USB) with an internet enabled computer. Otherwise the internet will not function and I will not be charged data charges correct?
I don't really ever find myself using the internet on a phone when I'm away from home so I can't justify the expense of the data service but I work on a few websites that I'd like to look good on a cellphone so that's my main reason for wanting internet access on it - so while I'm at work I can log into the wifi system and test the site while I'm tweaking the code.
Am I correct in assuming that I shouldn't be charged under this situation?
Hi, I'm on Vodafone and I made the changes fun_key posted without noting down the original settings. Please can someone tell me what the default settings are for internet connection and private network connection. Thanks
I'm sorry... I've searched the forum using a few different keywords and can't find exactly how to do this. I did see a posting on "MoDaCo_NoData" but it seems to crash on my Tytn (installs but errors after it runs).
I have downloaded the official HTC WM6 Rom update and have that installed now. I'm just reading up on the hacked roms (Black Majik)... might try it in a week or two.
I know on WM5 if I didn't enable WiFi and by mistake ran IE, it downloads the data from the cell network, which is definately NOT what I want. Worse, if for some dumb reason, Wifi is a low signal, it might drop and push you onto the cell network for data, which has happened to me a few times now and unless you are paranoid (I am now), you never notice that it's slipped onto cell data network. It's starting to cost me a fortune.
Any assistance would be appreciated.
Just change the settings for your gprs data connection so they are incorrect and then wont connect to the network, easily done .
Start/Settings/Connections/Connections/Advanced/Select Network
Select My WORK NETWORK
Some clarification needed...

Sorry... where do I do that exactly? If I go to connections, click on "GPRS Setting" it asks me is I want to use PAP or CHAP... nothing else.
As well, I forgot to mention I did get a Tytn for my wife as well, so would be nice if there was a program or simple step to enable/disable and easy for the wife to use.
Start/Settings/Connections/Connections/Advanced/Select Network
Select My WORK NETWORK

Thanks, doing this brings up "Network Managment" with two items on screen to choose.
1. Programs that automatically connect to the internet should connect using:
Options: a) My ISP
b) My Work Network
Edit / New
2. Programs that automatically connect to a private network should connect using: Options:
a) My Work Network
b) My ISP
If I do item 1 above, and change it to My Work Network, then I can no longer access web sites via WiFi. Which is what I'd like to do, just use WiFi, no other wireless data transfers via the cell carrier.
Thanks for your help and any clarifications..
You are facing errors with your Modaco Nodata because you haven't setup any data connection (3G or GPRS) to your provider. Try setting it up and running Modaco Nodata again.
It works a breeze for me. But then again, if you don't have any connections setup, you shouldn't worry about anything in fact.

When you go to Connections/Connections/Advanced/Select Network/and select My Work Network, click EDIT then click on the Proxy Settings tab and check this network connects to the internet....
Simply go into the network settings area (the same area people have noted above) and remove every connection other than your wi-fi.
Poke around, you'll figure it out.
Even easier
Call your carrier and disable data to that phone. Then there are NO worries that you accidentally change a setting and get a big bill as a result.
Maybe you can use CommmgrPro

or

I use WiFi when ever and havent ever had fees................
I have a HTC Touch 3G (Jade) running Windows Mobile 6.1, i have managed to set up the VPN connection with my work server, the phone connects to the server (although it does say the connection is not encrypted), but when i set Activesync going of the phone the server drops the VPN connection
I have read about adding the server address into the exceptions list, but this does not help.
Any assistance would be much appreciated
Thank you
think it could be because if
settings->connections->connections->advanced-selecet network is set
to my home network
that would make the device try and use the network connection it get access to from active-sync and drop the connection it is using to connect to vpn
I would turn of the ability to use the active-sync as network connection

Programs that automatically connect to internet = Mobile web
Programs that automatically connect to private network = My Work Network
I would try and change the later of the options
and maybe look in pc activesync for the ability to turn of network sharing
Help!!!!, still no joy
Does anyone know if it is because i am trying to connect to the VPN via a 'payasyougo' sim, having reads O2's info they only appear to talk about connections to VPN via 'pay monthly'?
Thanks

most likely your network operator has blocked the ports necessary to use IM on their network
Try this:
Go to settings-wireless controls-menu-connections-advanced and then choose Select Networks.
Once you're under Select Networks, try out the options under "Programs that automatically connect to the Internet should connect using:" For example in order for me to be able to connect to live messenger regardless of my network environment, I have to choose the "Orange internet" option (default is Orange MMS). The options for you will be different of course, based on your carrier.
Hope this helps,

I had the same problem, in my case proxy server was enabled and that caused my problem. When I turned it off it worked
ilhantug i will try this
xforcenl, if i turn this proxy off, everything else will work like before or...?
in my case yes, but if other programs are reacting strange, re-download standard settings of your provider
