Trying out new roms without risks? - XPERIA X1 General

Hello,
I've got a new Xperia including a two year guarantee. So I'am able to exchange my mobile phone in case of some unexpected problems [Windows-Updates are as well possible] But I want to give new roms a try because they partly seem to be really beautiful. Is there the possibility to backup my original rom [I already read http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=462926] and restoring it without any changes? When flashing a new rom I have to "install" HardSPL - Is it as well possible to restore the original bootloader?
I would be pleased about useful answers - Thanks a lot
Kind Regards
N0r0

Yes, it's possible to restore the stock ROM and stock_spl in case of guarantee. It's not necessarily required to backup your original ROM. You can download and flash an original ROM.

yes totally possible!
look at the Roms sub Forum @ the stickys. Probably you will find your providers stock rom there, so you dont need to back up your rom manually. (if you do it manually, make sure you do it after a hard reset with no programs and infos from you on it).
But note: If you USB Jack gets faulty or you destroy your phone in any other way you'll not be able to restore or flash anything.

Thanks
Yesterday I flashes some Roms and there's nothin else for it to hope for no problems/crashes In a pinch I'll try to restore everything

In case i need to revert to an original rom, do i need to have the original bootloader, or will hard spl be enough?

If you want to go back to stock, the easiest thing you can do is first flash the original ROM and then flash back the original SPL.
You could also use sony ericsson update service to get the original ROM back, to then flash SPL back to normal.

Hard reset possible after ROM upgrade?

I recently upgraded to WM6.1 with Bepe 0.56 ROM. Is it possible to return to the default ROM if I perform a hardreset? Holding both the IE and NAV key while resetting should do the trick right?
I'm sorry, the answer is no.
A hardreset cleans all custom settings, programs and all the stuff which happens to a Windows Mobile device while you use it.
It resets the installed ROM - in your case bepes - to factory defaults. You replaced the original ROM by flashing bepes ROM, if you want the original back, you have to flash it first.
I forgot to add: if you dont have a backup of your original ROM (what I guess by your question) and cant find an original ROM (yet)... keep waiting or good luck searching...
Right, that was my assumption. But if I find the default ROM I can just flash it back right? The HARD-SPL won't prohibit that?
No, if jou flashed an non default rom, you can flash a shiped rom...
Links to all available Roms, as well as hard-spl and original spl can be found here. If you can find the original rom you want and flash it then you can also return to the original spl.

See second post in the suggested HOW TO thread...

What do i need to do before sending my TC for repairs.

I need to turn in my Touch Cruise to HTC for repairs. What do I need to do before i turn it in to HTC so they wont know that there was a cooked rom on the device?
Hey there, please make sure you wait for an experienced member to reply to you on this as i'm not 100% sure, but what you can do in the meantime is download the factory ROM and make sure the software and radio rom goes back to the original.
As for HardSpl if its installed, i'm not sure if they can detect this or not after installing the factory ROM so just make sure you wait for an experience member to reply.
Just make sure you have an offivial Rom on you device
Be friendly in the repair center and the this will be now problem
they will fix it
What is the problem with you device?
hi, personnally i had a problem with my TC : it didnt charge & was no longer recognized by the PC when i plugged the miniUSB thing.
So i couldnt setup the original rom before sending it to factory for repair, i just sent it as it was and they just changed the motherboard because the mini-usb receiver wasnt working anymore.
They also installed the original rom.
Like many other people who have sent their TC to repair without reinstalling the original rom (that i read them saying it in other forums), i had no problem.
So i think if you can, just install back the original rom, but if you dont they may not be going to bother you for that, even more that they will install the original rom after repairing your PDA.

If you want to make your device look exactly like it did when it came out of the factory, as well as flashing an original ROM you will also need to restore the original SPL. Instructions on how to do both as well as the applicable downloads are contained in this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=381600
Thanks for your help

What to backup?

What do i need to backup before flashing HD with new rom, as to not void the warranty? As in, i need to be able to be able to get the device in the same state as it was when i opened the box in case i need to use the warranty, but i'm guessing there's a little more to it then just backing up the rom. I know i need to backup the original ROM, and i got that covered with this guide. What else? I think i need to backup the radio also, but i don't know how. Could anyone explain and link me the tutorials? Thanx
EDIT: Do i actually need to install a new radio so i can flash a new rom, or can i just backup the original ROM and then just flash a new one, without messing with anything else?
If i use USPL, do i need to backup anything besides the original ROM?

New ROM for T-Mobile (UK) help needed

Hello.
This is my first post, so please be kind to me!
I've spent the past few weeks trying to get my head around what to do in order to flash my HD2 which is on the t_mobile network
The original rom 1.43 i think is driving me crazy and I now dont care if I change the rom and it invalidates the warenty!
In order to HSPL I need to SPL first, but will my device allow this?
I've read through so many threads that I am completely confused and dont know which way to turn, never mind which thread to re-read.
Can someone point me to the sspl, HSPL to upgrade to 1.66
Thanks
Glyn
oh its the 512 version
you are over confusing yourself.
download hspl 2
instal it - choose whichever hspl you like (may as well go for 2.08.hspl)
flash whatever rom you like from usb. (don't forget to flash a compatible radio either before or straight after.)
Thanks for your reply......
so downloan the HSPL from here?
'forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=609477'
and as I run the program I'll get the option of which version to install?
What should I look for to make sure that the radio is compatible with the rom?
Thanks again and sorry for my ignorance
Glyn
best thing you can do is to read a lot. No need to do enerything in one mad dash.
get HSPL2 from HERE - end of the first post (but read the post, dont just skip to download, )
run it as administrator (right click, run as administrator)
for best results use a usb port on the back of your PC (i.e one directly on teh motherboard, not an external usb slot) it will ask what version you want to install. just go for 2.08.hspl (not 2.08.0000) and let it do its thing. the authors say you should match the version to the rom (so 1.43.hspl for roms that are 1.43 or 1.48, 1.66.HSPL for 1.6 based roms, etc, but it isn't critical, most will run on any HSPL, so dont go changing every time you flash a new rom, no need. If it doesnt work then change it.)
As for radio tips, a radio with .51. in the number, (eg 2.09.51.03) will NOT work with any rom that has the 576meg ram, enabled.
If you flash a rom and all you get when you restart is a grey screen, chances are the radio doesnt match. Boot to bootloader and flash the radio.
But most of all, read stuff.
What about shipped rom's that are .exe files? Do they include radios with it? Also, is there a post you can point me to that has a list of compatible radios with different rom's?
that's where reading comes in. the whole process has so many variants that there is no simple "a b c" that covers everything.
yes the exe includes radio (and also spl if you use sd card to flash -stay away from sd card, use usb and if anything goes wrong you just boot to bootloader and re flash)
the chefs give you all the infoyou need in the first couple of posts. the sticky threads in the rom development section will tell you how to do everything, and any problem you encounter has beenwritten about already. so read, search and read.
I suggest you flash Stock WWE 1.66 ROM first so you can have a feel of how much improvement
has been done from 1.43
you can download it in HTC website.
Thanks for your help so far..
I would like to go for the 1.66 official ROM first, so I'll find that on here first and find the exe file so I dont have to mess about with compatible radio's.
Just before I HSPL it, I would like a copy of the original 1.43 T-Mobile ROM, so better get searching.
Thanks again
Glyn
the original 1.43 T-Mobile ROM is on HTCs website so get it from there as a backup
THANKYOU!!
Thankyou so much for your help and guidance.
Last night I decided to just do it - the phone was so poor I couldn't take it anymore.

theres nothing to it. the 'normal' hd2 which you do have, is about the safest phone to flash in the world today, with HSPL2. The 'radios killing phones' problem that started last week is specific to the t mobile US model only, , the one with 1 gig rom.
If you install HSPL on your phone, and then only flash over USB, the very worst that will happen (from a software point of view) is that the phone stops at a grey screen, and/or only boots into bootloader, so you boot into bootloader, you flash something else, and it's fixed.
The T Mo UK stock rom is available to download as backup, (as is o2 and voda for anyone looking) in the 'LEO official roms' thread in rom development, first post, first link, first folder (1.43)
At any time, you can flash that rom from sd card (look it up if you need to) and restore everything, spl, radio and rom, , to factory settings.
In all honesty, so long as you are careful, methodical, don't pull out USB cables halfway through, laptop battery dies, etc , then you are more likely to get bricked from some freak incident, like , umm, battery dieing, heh.
Fear not! be smart, be careful, try to understand what you are doing and why at each step, read up on what an spl is, and the job is , as they say, sorted.

Thanks.. just one more thing.
Saw on youtube that i have to format my SC card
youtube.com/watch?v=nrmlqrfCvas[/url]
is this so and is this referring to the sd card in the HTC or my own sd card used to download the 1.66 onto?
