Ugly HTC T9 keyboard - G1 General

I have the HTC keyboard installed, and although its a vast improvement over the standard one (choice of T9 or compact qwerty RULES!), the keyboard itself is just plain ugly! White/black/grey splatters? Who designed that?!
Is there a way I can change the background to a plain colour?

I think its better than the standard one. at leats in design.

I like the virtual keyboard.. It is perfect for my white g1
However I'm also interested into skinning it.. Maybe it could become better

In addition to being ugly and not stylistically in keeping with any app window where you might use it, it's also an epic fail in the usability stakes because it's hard to see some of the characters on the keys.
I only really use the T9 keyboard and I find it difficult to see these characters '.? because of the mess of a background.
It's so distracting, it takes more concentration than should be necessary to type something out - a plain colour, ANY colour would be an improvement!

If you could make a version that I could install in a plain colour (preferably white characters on black keys like the default android vk) then I would pay you!

Any way to get this on my TheDude's 1.3? Or any roms I can flash to try this out
Edit:
Figured it out.

Can you post up a link to the HTC_IME apk for me, please? I got mine from a 4shared download - obviously a different version from yours...

Best Keyboard for the HD?

Hi I'm currently using PocketCM Keyboard which is better than the default but a bit frustrating when having to use !&- etc as you have to switch to numbers then to exclamations...
I was wondering if anyone have found a better keyboard (perhaps like the iphone with everything on the one screen) but still takes advantage of the screen size?
JetMouse, you know you can easily customise the layout of PocketCM Keyboard to suit your needs? It's as easy as editing a text file to control which symbols appear on which buttons. Since I did that it's easily become my favourite software on my Touch.

I use SPB Keyboard (the new one, version 4.0) with fullscreen mode. The non-fullscreen mode is pretty much iphone-like. Don't know if it's "better" - to my taste the stock one is just perfect in all respects except for lack of support for Russian, which I need. Unlike most other keyboards, it has arrows which compensate the absense of the dpad on the device.
Sure thing:
Connect your PocketPC to your computer so you can browse the contents of the device.
Browse to \Program Files\PCMKeyboard
Copy English.layout (or whichever one you're using) to your computer's desktop
Make a backup of the file, just in case
Open the live file with Notepad
You can see four lines labelled keyboard_layout_#=
Edit the characters in those lines to change the symbols on the keys in PocketCM Keyboard
Each of the four lines contains a complete template for the keyboard. Rows are separated by the \n (newline) combination
There are some shortcuts to create special-purpose keys:
\2 seems to be uppercase
\1 seems to be lowercase
\b is backspace
\M is the symbol/text toggle button
\N is the enter key
There is a way of including smilies or combinations of characters on single keys, but I can't remember how. I also can't remember how to edit the row of quick symbols you see if you hold down the '123#?' button
Once you've made your changes, save the file on your computer and copy it back over to the PocketPC.
You'll need to choose a different softinput thing and then go back to PCM Keyboard to see the changes.
Don't forget to save the file somewhere in case you upgrade to a newer version of PCM Keyboard.
My favourite keyboard is Tengo. Allows very fast and forgiving typing. You might like to try it. I hope it works on Touch HD cos I have not got one to try on yet.
They have a free version, a commercial regular version, and a commercial thumb version.

I just tested it, yes it is 100% compatible.
I love this keyboard, but I am trying to get it to run using the Dutch language. It is so blazing fast and accurate in English using the suretype layout, it's not even funny. I SWEAR I cannot type faster using a hardware keyboard, simply because of the fact that it is just as accurate, has big enough keys to type blind, and you don't actually have to depress a button so... works for me
Still stuck with the trial version though...
Only thing that I still gotta get used to is switching keyboards using a finger slide, I just keep pressing buttons instead of triggering the slide really cool function though as it saves button space and basically is just cool to show people
Thanks for the tip people!
EDIT:
Got my own language it in it now, easy... Also really easy to switch languages... Just pull down the ABC key and pick one. This does reveal some non-skinned ugly winmo buttons though, even while the rest of the keyboard is Diamond skinned.

Completely Agree, it is very usefull, Fast and easy to use Keyboard
TouchPal
I would at least try the demo of this. I personally prefer TouchPal to a Blackberry hardware keyboard. I am serious. The seplling correction and word prediction is simply amazing. Completely altered my view of software keyboards.
BTW- I am 6' 2" and weigh 220 with BIG hands, and Have been happy with TouchPal since the first Touch.

Alternative Keyboard SIP for X1

Hi All,
I am sure I am not the only one to find that the keyboard SIP on the X1 is too small.
Can anyone recommend a larger keyboard to work in verticle mode ? I am hopping to be able to use my fingers to do the typing instead of pulling the stylus out everytime. Something like the size of the Iphone keyboard or the Samsung Omnia keyboard would be perfect. I also like the short "vibrate" feedback feel when you type. Anyone feeling the same ?

Additionally to the probably not quite legal copy of the HD's keyboard, there'd be also solutions like PCM keyboard (VGA skin required!), TouchPal, SPB Keyboard, and so on...

If you try PCM Keyboard then you must not choose VGA but WVGA skin
FingerKeyboard2. It's amazing and should probably be on every touchscreen phone in the world.

The letters on the diamond keyboard i installed used to be in bold, now they look thin and ugly after a soft reset for some reason, how to change it back?

I agree. Better than the new SE keyboard if you don't use XT9.
I second that. FingerKeyboard is the best by far. Lots of different layout are already available, but it takes you a few minutes to customize it the way you like it.

Finnish/swedish software keyboard?

How can I get the ä and ö letters to the software keyboard? Also I wouldn't mind if the keyboard layout was a little bigger but for now I would be satisfied just to get the scandinavian letters on the screen. Hardware keyboard works fine.

the WM one or the blackstone one, the wm one is in seetting input and settings choose sedish, if it dosnt exist, sorry dont know, but if you are using the blackstone one try my cab in other post for swedish on blackstone keyboard.
I don't know what you mean by Blackstone? This is the keyboard I am using, see this picture I found on the internet. It's shaded and doesn't look exactly like the one in my previous HTC TytnII (the one in the TytnII was just plain black and white, square buttons and no shading)

[THE] Black Diamond keyboards - whc's SM multilanguage added!

Hey guys,
I inversed colours of keyboard and dialer.
Copy the files to the device, from there to Windows folder, they're protected so I used Total Commander.
If there's anyone who would like keyboards like this but blue or red or whatever, tell me and I will do it for you or tell you how to do it.
Black original keyboards (You have to have original version installed) (without full qwerty):
http://uploading.com/files/HO87HZFT/Black Diamond keyboards.zip.html
http://rapidshare.com/files/197643363/Black_Diamond_keyboards.zip.html
I made also whc's small keyboard, including full qwerty, symbols and numbers. Works fine on my Diamond, all languages should work. I edited files from the newest version, but I don't think you'll get any problem on older version.
How to uninstall (get back to whc's grey SM):
Launch uninstall cab - on the list of programs you'll got this "program" or:
Uninstall Black whc keyboard like a normal program and install whc's keyboard again or:
Install whc's keyboard
I think it's best to launch uninstall cab, you'll have two more programs on program list but it won't take any memory.
These methods won't uninstall whc's SM, only turn from black back to grey.
It seems to be impossible to change font colour in full qwerty, so I had to make it lighter :/
Incoming: Update for original (full qwerty), whc's stock keyboard & after that whc's hd.
If I missed something, let me know.
Can you do all the keyboard I use full qwerty
This is great !!! I LOVE THIS !!!
Only 1 problem it dont work on my diamond :-(
Full keyboard is almost ready but I think I will have to make it lighter a bit to make those black letters more visible.
Dude! Awesome! Now I'm waiting on full qwerty and landscape qwerty.
Any plans on making this for the Touch Diamond Small keyboard? The one from the HTC Fuze.
wow thanx cant wait for the swedish keyboard what about the telephone pad keyboard
do you mind making a phone keyboard?
Nice! I can't wait for the Spanish version
you guys can call me a chicken, BUT, is the swedish version bulletproof? does it really work as suposed to? on ROM 203SWE ?
I've had enough problams making the damn KB black alraedy. so i just want some insurance. and reliable feedbacks

I think these keyboards should work on all ROMs.
I think U converted wrong files in Dialpad. ... You should convert Assets_dialer_Normal.bmp and Assets_Dialer_Pressed.bmp because those files U gave in dialpad don`t change anything ...
wondering one thing im using whc 1.6 swe keyboard this will work on all ?
If you have any different keyboard installed instead of the original, it won't change its colours but you will have original keyboard with inversed colours.
hmm strange,
I copied the files in the Swedish folder.
but ut never asked me to replace existing files.
and after my reboot, only the 123 and T9 buttons are black the others are still the same
can it be because my buttons are named differently?
Which keyboard do you use? This is swedish version of mini qwerty, maybe you use phone keyboard?
i use phone keyboard too think you can make a black one of that please ? tack så mycket
I think I will post it tomorrow. But tell me, do you have any special swedish characters on phone keyboard?

On-screen keyboard question

Does anyone know of a good keyboard replacement for the *sprint* HTC Hero? Or a way to make it larger for my fat fingers?...I mean BIG BONED fingers?
Hello.
I think the best one for "big boned fingers" is Better Keyboard :
http://betterandroid.wordpress.com/2009/05/24/introducing-better-keyboard-for-android/
It looks ugly but the keys are pretty much larger

Have you tried the HTC T9(Compact Qwerty) keyboard?
I would recommend Touchpal. I used that back on WM and i have installed it on my Hero. However i have reverted back to stock keyboard after updating Paul's ROM to the latest one as it doesnt lag that often anymore.

I noticed that it helped quite a bit in vertical typing, but i still notice some poor response horizontally. is there any way to calibrate the keyboard in horizontal mode?
