Hi guys...not sure if this is old news or not http://www.downloadsquad.com/2009/06/16/google-maps-for-android-gets-voice-and-transit-search/
But now you can use voice commands for Google Maps. Does anyone know where we can get the update since I am running a rooted JF rom.
Cheers

Download the "google search by voice app" in the market, then watch the video link in my first post to activate
The new update doesn't have Street View. Are they discontinuing the project?
it has streetview im using it now!!
You are right, but it is not an option in the map modes like it was before. You have to long press the map on the location, then a window pops up and there you select street view. Don't really care about that since I am in Canada and there are no street views here yet, at least that is what I think. As for the voice recognition/search function, I do not have that option in the search function. Looked all over the place for it but still can't find it. There is suppose to be a mic beside the google search bar in the Search option. Not there on Rogers Canada network. Hopefully they will fix that soon.

can't find this app, when i search for it, only one app appears and it is google maps which is already installed...
still no voice search for me.
strange.
The Roger HTC Magic (I have one) doesn't appear to have libspeech.so installed - I think that is the missing piece. I am not sure why we don't see the google search by voice app that the others are speaking about.
I'm confused why the voice dialer works - I guess that doesn't use libspeech.so?

When you are in Google Maps, do Menu > Search then select the microphone, which will let you do voice search.

It's close to the same hardware - different frequencies or something for the different carriers. The other difference is each carrier can customize the Android OS they release. Rogers in Canada, for example, released their Android phones with MS Exchange support. But they obviously left some other things out. That's why I want to root my phone so I can put whatever software I want on there.

That's the issue - there's no such button. Missing libspeech.so is the culprit here I believe. And while I have the file from other sources, I don't have root access to the phone, so I can't install it to the lib folder to make it work.
What a pain.. when I try to update mine, I get the message:
"Installation Error: Package file was not signed correctly."
Any suggestions?
I installed the new version of maps but I can't find the voice search option, it's just not there (same as previously reported) i'm on vodafone australia.
Any idea how we can get the voice working?
Well I upgraded the Maps app and have the voice search. It's rubbish! I've tried speeking as clearly as possible but it's all over the place. Searching Edinburgh comes back as Dayton, Ohio, USA everytime Typing is much quicker anyway.
New update of Google Map has been released, v3.1.1
I've updated and retried, it's still rubbish.
Ya not sure what v3.1.1 fixes, there is still no voice search here in Canada yet.
Hi
I have a hd2 , when I install the gps2google earth (gps2ge) on my mobile , I always get lat:0 and lng:0 . I donot see the google earth. any help pls?
Not sure what causes the problem; but do you still need GPS2GE nowadays? Google earth for HD2 uses GPS directly, and if you get the newest version, you can create 'starred places' and then share them.
Hi
I can not find a copy of google earth for htc hd2! any help?

Doesn't exist! That's why. Look for google maps instead.
HI
That is bad! hope htc can catch up.
Thanks for you info
Try running QuickGPS first and then Google Maps. You should only have to do this once

It seems you are mixing things up here. It would not be up to HTC to code Google Earth to work with a Windows Mobile Phone. If they did that, I can hear Google's cries of IPR violations. The way I see it, Google would be quite happy to see Google Earth working only on Android phones.

Yes, you are right, moreover, I'm pretty sure that when Stephen Selby wrote Google Earth, he actually meant Google Maps and kenobe would be perfectly happy to use Google Maps instead of waiting for Google Earth! I actually find the way google maps work brilliant! Using cell towers signal to get your approximate location when you can't get a GPS fix is a great feature.
Hey, it seems that one of the things stripped out of the Blackhole rom is the voice synthesizer for Google Nav. I can't for the life of me remember where to go in the market to download this. Does anyone remember? It's annoying the hell out of me that Nav doesn't have the voice directions.
Same issue here. This probably belongs in that thread too.
Yeah, that's a good idea, I'll put that in the thread.
You Lose voice navigation if you get rid of the text-to-speech services. So check your /system/apps/ to make sure you have PicoTts.apk and TtsService.apk, if you don't have them that's the cause of your problem.
I have those apks and the voice isn't working on Google Navigation. Any other suggestions?
I had to download something from the market. I think it was google voice search.
I got my problem fixed. I deleted the SVOX folder on my SD Card.
Is anyone using google maps not getting voice prompts...only beeps that tell you when your turns are coming up? Its really frustrating having to look at the screen to know where to go.
You can download an app from the market that will talk on google maps. If you are on 2.2 then one should already be installed for you.
Sent my from IPad!
I'm on 2.2.1(EB13). it was working and then I reset my phone because of gps taking forever...I uninstalled updates and then re-installed but its still not giving voice guidance.
Thanks musclehead I figured it out. Text to speech engine wasn't installed. I clicked on install voice data and it took me to the market to download the app
is there anyway or anywhere to get google maps on the shift without the latitude app? i just hate seeing it in my app list! i never use it and i don't see available to freeze in titanium. is it just part of maps?
Yeah latitude, places, and navigation are all part of maps.
Ok. My problem is that while trying to upgrade to a newer version of Google Maps (5.6), I had to uninstall my older version (5.2) using Titanium Backup app. But I did not know that removing Google Maps would also remove Navigation, Places & Latitude. Now all of them are gone from my phone and the new package of Google Maps (version 5.6, size 6.39MB) is also NOT INSTALLING on the phone! So what is the remedy left now? Can I download Google Maps from the Market to install it on my phone?
You should be able to just dl maps from the market to get everything back, and I'm pretty sure if u try to get rid of latitude ,or any of the others, google maps just keeps force closing
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA App
