Hi, first post.
I am also a first with windows mobile, i recently picked up a touch 3g.
i am rather confused with the internet and data access.
i have added all the wifi internet zones i visit.. home, work and friends... it says i can connect but when i try to browse it doesnt work.
basically i want to be able to connect to and use my WIFI zones when i'm in range, and when i'm not i want it to use 3G if i connect to an app or browser that requires it, then when i leave the application i also want it to stop using data so i wont get charged from my provider?
is there any easy way of doing this, i'm havin a hard time setting it up.. i would like WIFI to take priority.
These could have been my words too ...
I'm searching for this since a long time and even more since I saw how smooth and unobtrusive switching between wifi (when available) and 3G (when wifi is not availabe) is on the iphone (oh, he said the word!). Until now I didn't find any solution but as I would be happy if there was one, I just add myself as possible happy customer to this thread
The only kind of workaround I found was keeping your wifi always enabled (though not in standby) to have a preference for wifi because its most of the time already connected when you need internet access. If no access point is found then and only then 3G is used. It doesn't drain you battery as much as one would think. But what got me away from this was the fact that there is a slight or not so slight lag at least in connection with S2U2 when turning on the display. That annoyed me so much that I always turn on wifi manually whenever I know there's an access point and I need internet access.
Sorry I couldn't tell you anything better ...

Hi everyone!
I've had PDA phones since a couple of years now, and I've always been searching for something.
Here is my problem:
When the phone needs an internet connection, windows mobile automaticaly tries to connect with the 3G connection.. As I don't have an unlimmited 3G connection, it's very annoying..! That's why I have to manually turn the Wifi "ON"
What I am searching for
I'd like a very intuitive and simple software that ask (with a popup for example) which connection to use (Wifi/3G) when the phone needs the internet.
Hope you understood what i'm searching for..!
While not a solution NoData might help part of your problem in the interim.
http://www.modaco.com/content/pocket-pc-software/246171/new-free-utility/
It will at least let you disable 3G/GPRS when you need to so you don't go over.
Thanks for the answer, i know this solution.. But that's not really what i'm searching for..!
Maybe You can create a fake connection for 3G so the phone doesn't get to connect? Just an idea, haven't tried. It still leaves the WiFi problem - why there isn't an option to select which connection to use if one is needed...
depending on what rom you have im sure comm manager has buttons for wife and data connection, with basic on off control for each.
However Id have thought someone could write something which would switch between data connection enable and wifi disabled (when out and about) and the other way around when you have wifi available and dont want to use up your 3g allowance.
I don't think it's that easy
that Comm part is build into WM, so the developer would need to write a new shell that acts as internet and gives you the option of selecting the connection..
I do like the idea though
hmmm,
is perhaps feasible with Mortscript?
In which one intercepts the “Internet” call and then by Popup the choice would have?
Argh!
I've never really posted a rant, but here's one.
Symbian is streets ahead of WinMo when it comes to network management.
With Symbian if you open an app that wants to access the Internet you get a prompt asking what available connection you want to use. If for some reason while using that app you lose the connection, you get prompted again.
WinMo doesn't ask. It uses whatever network is available going from Wifi down.
This is a problem for some (Okay, not all. I'm sure people with unlimited data plans, and those who don't want to be prompted like this way). Symbian let you configure programs to automatically connect to a network. It gave you a choice. Again, WinMo doesn't.
My own example -
I'm with Telstra, in Australia. We don't get unlimited data. I have a 150MB Plan.
With my previous N95 I could start up Internet Radio, chose WiFi for my connection, and listen to it while I was in bed knowing that if I fall asleep, and the WiFi drops out, the program will stop. It won't switch over to HSDPA and cost me a fortune.
Now my Touch HD. It sleeps automatically after 30 minutes. I've just found out that when it does that, I lose WiFi.
Last night when I went to bed I started up Kinoma, and was listening to a shoutcast stream over WiFi. The phone went to sleep and with the wifi connection lost, the phone went to HSDPA.
12 Hours of streaming has put me 560MB over my 150MB limit. That's $270 extra I'm going to need to pay.
Oh well. Lesson learned.
I don't understand though how Windows Mobile can be so far ahead of Symbian in almost every area, yet lacking by a huge amount when it comes to Network Management.
FWIW - I've now set all programs that want to use the Internet to now use my "Work Connection" so they will only use WiFi but
a) What a useless workaround. If for some reason I do want to use HSDPA data I then have to go through the hassle of changing it back
and
b) How hard is it to have the option there to "Always Ask"
Seriously!?
Phew. I'm done.
you have my sympathy, my last smart phone was symbian UIQ. that had internet profiles and priorities etc. WinMo is sadly deficient in that area.
There are a few issues raised here.
First off wifi turning off when the phone (and you!) goes to sleep. I think there is a setting to prevent that, have a look at this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=488623
also i have seen mentioned an app called no_data which prevents GPRS connections, might be usefull, though I have no experience of it.
I have to agree on this, but on a slightly different subject: the EVIL windows mobile connection manager.
It is completely useless, being in the middle way between iPhone style (connect with any network and don't bother the user), and Symbian style (bother the user and let him choose the network every time). That is, it requires the users to dig into tricky and labyrinthic settings and always fails to do the right thing.
Thx to connection manager, I cannot use the BT PAN connection I spent long nights trying to get it work on my Motorola Q9, when the phone is not in airplane mode, because the CM will unilaterally think the PAN is useless and use H$DPA (or GPR$) instead.
Good old fashion Telstra reeming plays a part as well.
OUCH on the $270!!!
[email protected]#$%^&*()_+|
I share you frastration until I found this No Data application which I install first in every flash, it just disables any Data connection!
If you need it let me know
Thanks for the sympathy.
My biggest problem with NoData is that I actually want to be able to use HSDPA when I am not near a WiFi network, I don't want data off permanently!
Why can't there be an app that lets you chose which connection everytime. That's what is annoying me most!
When you need it just switch it back on. Less than few clicks
Hi,
i have just posted regarding this issue on another thread.
I remember reading a review for the Touch HD and one reviewer mentioned a 'simple thord party app that allows one button switching from wifi to 3g(HSDPA)'. rather disappointingly the reviewer does not mention what this app is called!!!!!
actually the issue i have is slighlty different, if i set the network setting to use wifi , when i turn wifi off i have the phone simply will not connect to anything until is go back through.
START>SETTINGS>CONNECTIONS>CONNECTIONS>ADVANCED>SELECT NETWORKS> either MY Work Network or Orang Internet.
phew what a pain in the preverbials.
Microsoft - i really hope you sort this in winMo 6.5
Anybody else - how about a simple app, if i switch wifi on and a network is found, set the above to my work network.
if not found then either set it to Orange Internet (or whoeever) (for those of us with unlimited data) or as the thread leader suggests just bloody ask whether it is ok to go back to 3G/HSDPA.
but can we please stop the:
START>SETTINGS>CONNECTIONS>CONNECTIONS>ADVANCED>SELECT NETWORKS>MY Work Network
or
START>SETTINGS>CONNECTIONS>CONNECTIONS>ADVANCED>SELECT NETWORKS>"carrier internet connection"
7 clicks of frustration that i struggle to do without a stylus
I've since installed and been using NoData. While not a perfect solution, it does make it easier to turn my data connections on and off without going through the settings menus.
It will do until Microsoft decides to catch up with the rest of the field with regards to network management.
Hi all,
I have searched for the answer but only succeede in getting confused.
would someone kindly point me in the right direction...
when i turn on WIFI and connect to my router, i then have to go START>settings>connection>connection>advanced>select networks...etc to get my apps (opera etc) to use the wifi connection.
then when i switch wifi off i have to do it all again and select orange internet.
surely there is a simple app available that when i tap wifi it does this for me and when i switch it off again it connects back to 3g.
my kaiser was the same, i had hoped my blackstone may have done it...grr
PLEASE HELP
regards

I used to have this - Opera would only prefer wifi once restarted, so if you connected via 3g, then went into a wifi area and connected, it would continue to use 3G.
Anyway, not an issue with the latest Dutty roms, they always use the wifi if it's connected (easy to check with whatismyip.org - connect 3g, load the page, connect wifi, refresh).

Hi, thanks for replying so quick..
yeah i had noticed that i always have to restart Opera...its all the other web based apps that i have to do this for as well (like google maps)
i don't mind having to re-start an app, its just a pain having to do the START>settings>connection>connection>advanced>select networks bit every time i turn wifi on and off.
my friend has an (dare i mention it) iPhone and he simply switches wifi on and ALL his apps connect through wifi. then when he switches wifi off ALL his apps default back to his 3G connection with no other fiddly settings at all!!!
(i really want to hate the iPhone but there are some things you can't deny it does very well. lol)
as for Roms...only had the phone 1 week and whilst i have no technical difficulty in performing this i would prefer to find an app based solution...
i remember reading a review of the blackstone and this very problem was mentioned (its a windows mobile issue not necessarily the phone) and they stated that there was a simple third party app that gets aroung this for 'one button wifi/3g switching) however they did not mention what the software was and have not responded to posting on that site/thread.
Just upgraded to the new HTC rom (official) and i no longer have the problem...turning on Wifi means it is used, turning off wifi means 3G is used.
no more fiddly START>settings>connection>connection>advanced>select networks etc having to swap between wifi and orange every time HOORAH.
+ the rom isn't poluted with a pile of Orange rubbish!!!

I still have the problem with my email.
Opera works correctly though.
Hi. Have a recent problem that developed on my HD2. It happened after installing the mod that activates a task switcher when holding the send button. Could have happened sooner but I think I would've noticed...
Problem is: I have my HD2 connected to WiFi at home and it works perfect for web browsing and all, but, the moment I use other apps such as updating weather or browsing google maps or the Windows marketplace they use the 3G regardless of my WiFi being active and working.
I am on 1.48 stock ROM.
I have uninstalled the mod BTW and I use duttys task manager.
Please please help me someone...
doubt it has anything to do with that mod... i dont have any mods on and 50% of the time even tho i am in WiFi covered area with WiFi on it will start using 3G instead of checking for WiFi. Its extremely annoying and i cant understand that HTC didnt atleast give you a small manager wich would give you different options how to connect to internet once you are trying to connect...
Its not that I am in a WiFi zone. my WiFi is connected and I am browsing the web. It's.not that it is just choosing a connection, it completely ignores my WiFi on everything but the browser. And it only started happening today. Marketplace worked on WiFi yesterday.
Nevermind. I found the problem. Earlier today I set no WiFi network to be treated as a work network instead of a internet network. this lead to most apps thinking I am not connected to the internet.

Hi. My problem is more or less as described by NESO1234 above. WiFi at home is is connected, but browsing Internet is done through 3G (I guess - loading a page takes loong and the arrows indicating WiFi connection are not moving).
You mention network not set correct. Could you or someone give me a more spesific hunch (path...) on how to make WiFi beeing used?

Go to the WiFi connection place (where the Wifi switch is and it shows ur acess point underneath) go to Advanced > Change Network then select ur AP and make sure 'Connects to:' is set to 'The Internet'.
Hope it helps, it worked for me
Hey all,
Done some searching but cant find a clear and striaght forward answer.
Bascially, on my old HTC Dream (Android) wifi would always be searching for a wifi to connect to (and if it found a network, it would tell me). if it was a network it had acess to, then it would automatically connect.
Otherwise, it would just use my contract internet.
So I was wondering, on the HD2, you always have to manually turn wifi on. Then say I leave the house, manually turn it off for it to connect to the contract internet.
Pretty small thing - but it gets annoying after a while.
Is there a way (reg edit or app) to make wifi do the same as the android did?
Thanks!
Bump.
I am interested in this too. I am trying to assemble a Mortscript to do it.
would be so helpfull.
I have my home network, Uni network and girlfriends that I can connect to. Now having to manually connect each time, and then disconnect from wifi when I leave is pretty annoying

This must be a rom issue. What ROM are you using?
My HD2 Wifi will connect automatically to networks I have connected it to before, it will notifiy me of available wifi, it will use cell data when wifi is not connected. Works to me the same as how you described your HTC Dream.
Just the stock one that comes with the phone.
to make my point slightly clearer...
I am at home with my Wifi turned on and connected.
I leave my house and go outside of the wifi range.
My phone still has the wifi icon at the top, but it wont be connected.
Therefore I have to turn wifi off to let it connect to my contract internet.
Maybe Wefi will solve that problem?
On Symbian worked very well.

I shall look into this, cant belive others dont get annoyed at it tbh
I'd like a solution to this too. I have found it annoying since settings my HD2. I haven't had any success with the solutions suggested in the forum to date.
actually guys.. there is another thing.. how about a cab that would force HD2 to open WIFI automtically to update weather/facebook..etc... whenever the any apps needs updating, then shutting the WIFI automatically off instead of trying to connect to 3g. you guys think its possible?
Mine always lets me know when I can connect to wifi.
Guys theirs does too. You dont get what they want.
When wifi is turned on it will search and connect only to wifi. It will not connect to wireless network of provider. So they want a program that would turn wifi off (which would let HD2 to connect to EDGE and 3G) if there was no place to connect to. And it would turn wifi connection back on (dissable 3G and EDGE) when there would be a wifi network to connect into. You get it now? It would neeed quite sophisticated program to switch betwen those two modes.
I dont use Providers network (3G, EDGE) but would like program that would check for avaible WIFI networks that I have access to and Connect to them to get updates (it would check for example every 10min) and connect to it only to get updates and SYNCH. then disconect and wait cca 4hours to start looking for wifis in 10min intervals. Would be nice =)

Then it must depend on the ROM version, but for me it works exactly how he wants, and always has. I never turn Wifi off. If I'm at home within my wifi range and load a webpage, it loads it through wifi. If I walk away, wifi connection gets lost, and I press a link, it will load it with the data connection straight away. If I walk back home or to another place where a known wifi is present, wifi reconnects by itself.
