Hi,
So I have been using my android for 6 month now and its all good. I have JF1.5 and offcourse its a rooted phone. I was travelling last week and so the phone was on roaming, I got back and turned data networks on and its all good. Except I noticed today that my phone has been constantly transfering data and it actually downloaded 500MB in only 3 days. My battery is being drained so fast, im not able to keep up with the recharge. So I had to actually delete the APN so that the phone no longer has data connectivity.
I looked up at the task manager and I couldnt find anything out of the ordinary. I closed everything up to only the android keyboard and the netcounter. Still I could see it downloading at full speed. So if anyone has any suggestion as to WHAT is it trying to download and Why ?? Please let me know.
Thanks abunch for any help !!
Update to JF 1.51.
I'm having the same issue, and I'm on JF1.51. The weird thing is, I did a manual flash and the version in About still shows as 1.5. Should 1.51 show up in there somewhere?
I've been without data for the past two days but I haven't had to charge my battery yet!
Do either of you have the SDK installed? If so, can you do us a favor and post your logcat?

If you flashed JF1.51 correctly your build number should contain "CRB43". JF version numbering is not 1:1 with Android version numbering.
in that case, I have JF1.51 installed...
OK, so I had 1.50. I updated to 1.51 now , I will keep monitoring this for the rest of the day and if it starts downloading like mad again, I will let you guys know. I really REALLYYY hope this will fix it.
I think I have SDK installed in my desktop computer, if thats what you were asking for, please provide instructions to extract a log and send it to you.
Thanks for the reply.... The reason I ask is two-sided.
Sometimes apps can be malicious and I want to make sure that it's not something that could be adversely affecting you and secondly... if by chance there was another update that hasn't gotten leaked ... you might be holding the key.
Now mind you this will only work if you are having more issues...
Connect your phone to your computer and open a command prompt. Type in ADB logcat and hit enter. Right click and hit enter. This will copy the contents to your clipboard. Paste them (CTRL+V) here.
If you need further help, feel free to IM me at ChicagoTransAm
Thanks alot for your help.......
So the bad news is that the problem is still their, the good news is I got the log. I attached it to this post, because it wouldnt fit as a code since it has lots of characters.
So the code attached was generated in about 1min. during which the phone downloaded around 2.5Mb. I changed the APN settings to the correct one (so that phone could connect) and then it immediatly started downloading. after about 1 min. or less actually I changed the APN name so that it stops working. You will notice that in the log file where the correct APN is etisalat.ae

It's not an update, it's something else. My guess would be Market is trying to download something. You can stop it by adding android.clients.google.com to the hosts file, but then you'd lose all market access.
right but wut could it possibly be downloading ? and why not everyone ?? this is wierd !
Guys......any thoughts ?? PLEASEEE !!
Maybe the GTalk app. Try playing with it... i dunno.
Hi guys,
Not sure what's happening on my Vodafone Magic...
Rooted it so i could install the HTC (htc_ime) keyboard. All that went fine all working ok. However since i've noticed my phone seems to be randomly using 5mbs of data every few hours. Can see this in netcounter. At one time i actually caught it happening, checked taskiller and closed everything that was running, yet the data still carried on transferring!!!
I've done a wipe to factory and set up again, just checked the phone before it was on 9mb, closed everything in taskiller, left for maybe an hour or two just looked and it now says 14mb.
Any ideas???
Could be the update problem I had. The phone downloads an update but fails to install (because the phone is rooted otacerts.zip does not match). If you catch it again you should be able to see the download progress in settings software update or the file being created in /cache. As soon as the download completes the update fails quietly and the cycle begins again. I'm looking for a stock ROM but for now I have copied /system/build.props from the ADB JFv1.51 ROM and is seems to have prevented the download from starting.

Turn off Data synchronization and see how it is. Maybe this is sync traffic
Downloaded JFV1.51 CRB43 ADP (10791) from the jesus freke blog.
adb pushed build.prop to system folder on phone, will leave it a few hours now and see if the data count randomly goes up or not, cheers!
Surely everyone should get this problem when they root? As i haven't put on a custom ROM or installed jesusfrekes stuff, just rooted it to install a keyboard!
Still doing it, went from 33mb to 37mb.
Could of done the build.prop wrong i guess, do you mind detailing the complete full procedure just in case?
Many thanks!
I had a very similar problem with my Magic although I don't know if it was downloading 5Mb chunks each time. It was on the stock firmware from Vodafone UK, can't remember if I had rooted at the time ... my Magic was rooted using these instructions: http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Magic_Rooting
Just interested to see if you did the same? At one point I had noticed 200Mb of data downloaded within one week ... Voda only allows 500Mb per month in their 'fair use' policy.
I didn't ever fix this but wiped and flashed a different ROM, I've been OK since then. Unfortunately Netcounter does not tell you which apps have been doing the downloading!
I didn't have many apps installed but you know how it is, virtually every app in the market requires internet access for something or another.
Hmmm that sounds very similar to me st0kes.
Left Voda stock rom on, just rooted it to be able to install the htc keyboard and yep i used those instructions you linked to.
Think i will follow your lead and flash to a different ROM this afternoon, thanks for your reply!
How did you go flashing a different ROM Roostlick? Which ROM did you try (URL?).
I rooted my Australian Vodafone Magic the day i got it using the same instructions st0kes mentioned. I didn't replace the 'su' program since i didnt need it and seemed like an unnecessary security risk.
Data usage was fine (normal) for the first 2 weeks. Then it started downloading 4.5mb chunks every 2 hours.
Got close to my 1gig cap, so i turned off all data synchronisation. I have just received my bill today to find the cap was blown.... and that these 4.5mb downloads have continued.
Obviously looking to fix it, since i'm already 400mb through this months cap!!
edit: looked at Settings>About phone>System updates> and i can see "Android Update 1.5" waiting to be installed... no surprises its 4.2mb. I hit "download' on the update and it fails silently after downloading, giving a download prompt again.
Found some more info on the OTA updates in JF's blog here.
I'm currently testing the chmod solution:
./adb shell
chmod 000 /cache/download*
Hi rrfx,
I flashed the phone and installed the rom here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=538633
Think it was the 3.6.8 release 4 version.
That seems to of fixed the problem
Roostlick,
You have done everything I did to solve the probelm except after I modified build props I did a factory reset and I have not hit the download button in settings->about phone->system updates since I did the factory reset. I still see the download available but it does not download any more.
Do you have the following info in settings->about phone (shows the build.props has been updated properly)?
Model No. = Android Dev Phone 1
Build = dream_dephone_.......
My phone is rooted as done here: http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.ph...=Magic_Rooting
B.
Hi guys, thanks for the information. I've fixed my phone now... for anyone else with this problem, and unwilling to use a 3rd party ROM... the path I followed from my post above.
JF's chmod 000 *.zip idea didnt work, my Vodafone Magic AU just kept downloading over the top. However using the SDK and logcat gave plenty of info
Code:
./adb logcat
I/SystemUpdateHelper( 63): Started a new update download: http://android.clients.google.com/updates/signed-vfpioneer-CRC1-from-CRB17.7fbab120.zip

W/SystemUpdateHelper( 63): Download system update disappeared.
Specifically touching the exact filename in /cache and chmod'ing it 000 didn't work. Suspect the android downloader runs as root and seems to clobber the file anyway:
Code:
touch /cache/signed-vfpioneer-CRC1-from-CRB17.7fbab120.zip
chmod 000 /cache/signed-vfpioneer-CRC1-from-CRB17.7fbab120.zip
(didnt work)
I tried a bunch of other ideas, trawled through bits of the OS code etc. Tried manually downloading and forcing the OTA update.
What worked:
I tried replacing the build.prop file with JF's v1.51. If anyone needs specifics here happy to help.
Rebooted the phone etc, the build version didn't change and the downloads continued. I didn't want to do a factory reset! So left it like this for a couple of days.
This morning, checked the logs and the downloads weren't happening. Odd. Checked the build version and the "dream_devphone" seems to have been read from the build.prop file now! And in system updates "your system is currently up to date". Yay. So perhaps no need to do a factory reset.
Hi all,
First of all thanks to all for the useful info. Been browsing this site (and modaco) for a while now. Finally got my Vega today
Apologies for the n00b question but....
Managed to sort out USB drivers (despite Win 7 x64... ) and updated to 1.09 from the official vega site. Now I'm trying to get the market working - put the OGMarket update (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=931337) on my SD card and installed the google framework, market etc... and I can get the market to run, however whenever I select an app I get "force close".
Any suggestions?
Is there a better way of going about this? I have nothing useful on my vega yet so don't mind reflashing - just wanted to try and stick with 1.09 if poss.
I have noticed it seems to be an old version of the market (I have an up to date X10 mini pro with the newest market on it) but I can't figure out how to run the market updater app.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers.
When I switched to 1.09, to install the market I just used the file linked in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=930267 and it worked right. It installs an older version of the market but once running it updates itself.
Brill - will give this a go.
Cheers,
Xio
Just updated my rom add-on. Needs to be flashed with the software tool. All is working great for me
Hiya,
Managed to get market working using method above - thanks!
Some of the Ggaps aren't there (and don't show up on market) such as calendar, maps etc... but this is definitely a step forward.
Now to go look at that rom...
Thanks again to all for the info!
I would suggest you follow the tip to enable all the apps in the market in my thread, google Maps shows fine for me. I can add more gapps to it no problem, just trying to keep the rom size down. Calendar does not show i can add that as a extra download.
Absolutely brill!
Now got google maps (and the superb mini taskbar) - as you say, no calendar on marketplace, so if you have it handy that would be great.
Otherwise - slick work!
Cheers,
Xio

I have had this issue, it started last night when i decided to re-flash my vega. (i have been doing lots of testing and wanted a clean system) It appears to effect all roms and builds. I tried stock v1.065, v1.08 and v1.09 also tried maodaco r8 and all resulted in the same. I ended up doing a application restore (from software tool) which resulted in market logging in, but then getting a message "No matching content in Android Market" I fixed this with market enabler. Not sure why this has happened, as it appears to effect all roms. Have to wait and see how many people this effects.
Your vega not booting is strange as you are the first to report the problem with the Gapps. Did you have sufficient battery power to apply the flash? Enter recovery and reflash the stock rom.
If anybody else is having the same issues please report, Thanks.
It is more a boot loop, the android buddy shows and that is it. I reflashed 1.09 and your pack. I will try the stock settings now. Lets see ^^
Ok it doesnt work, i guess your pack hate germans ^^
i although test to set my language and timezone to an american one (read something in an other forum) doesnt work. So now iam clueless...
Send from my Vega
Odd, I got the market working but it only had free apps. Had to set to US in language and keyboards to get the paid apps to show, but now all prices are in dollars. Must be a location thing.
Afraid I am having the same problem too actually...
I have flashed 1.09 again - system restarts ok.
Unfortunately when I add the apps pack I just get the little android symbol on the screen in a boot loop
Any ideas? Was really cool when the apps were workin tho
EDIT: My location is UK btw.. incase that's useful
EDIT 2: What I mean to say is, I add the apps pack and it loads fine, all the apps work, all is well - however, if I then power down the vega it goes into the boot-loop.
Cheers,
Xio
There are more and more messages and news that there is a problem with the market login. I guess it is not the user, it is the server from google.

That's a relief - I have just been re-flashing and wondered what I had done wrong when the market didn't log in!
Cheers Gman for all yer work so far. Am trying different combinations of apps in the pack to see if it is one in particular causing the problem - also, while on the topic, any chance of getting google talk in there? I have an apk that works on the vega - but I'm not sure if that's going to cause a bootloop too, so I'm leaving it off for now!
Xio
Thx man, if you need any help, testing or something, ping me.

Hmm,
I'm probably going about this back to front but...
Have installed the apps pack straight away (without the mini-taskbar etc mod) containing only:
Calendar
CalendarProvider
DeskClock
Gmail
GoogleCalendarSync
GoogleServicesFramework
Maps
NetworkLocation
Street
Updater
Youtube
Seems fine (I.E. I can restart the vega without bootloop) but I cannot "establish a reliable data connection to the server" - it would appear much of the internet is having the same problem at the mo for whatever reason!
Ofcourse this is still missing the all important market etc... and I didn't realise just how much I'd miss the mini taskbar!
Tried making "my own" update - chopping together the apks, updating the updater-script file then signing the zip.... it didn't end well.
*Flashes 1.09 again*...
I think this is a google thing. i have tried every rom/market update combination, but still unable to log into market. Restoring from a application back up from software tool, fixes the login problem but you can only see free apps unless you change the language in language and keyboard to US.
I keep getting a notification that a system update is available but after it downloads and tries to install, I get the error "the update is invalid and has been canceled"
Did this six times with the same result. What's going on?

Assuming you are not rooted or modded, the only thing I did (and always do) is remove my transflash card before I do an update. If you DO mod or have root, maybe it's something else.
So my recommendation for now is to remove your msd card, that is if you even have one plugged in and then download and apply the update. If you don't have one in there, no suggestions here right now. I am stock, have never rooted or modded my system and my OTA was perfection. It downloaded and updated without a hitch.
GL, let me know how it goes.
not rooted but I did have an SD card inserted. Removed it and the OTA was successful! Thanks!!

Good to hear! Now you know.
Enjoy your Iconia.
Realllllly interested to know why the sd card is causing the update to fail, that's strange.
if you download the patch fix from Acer support site, it also fix the "the update is invalid and has been canceled" error. That is how I solved the problem. It is good to know that the SD card is the main cause as I also inserted my SD card.
What about Acer informing about those "how to do" basic things.

We have 3 Acer 500's ( NOT Rooted) in our family, two of them got the updates without any problems.......one even had an external sd card in it.
However, the third unit has NO sd-card and is NOT able to complete the update.
I hate to perform a factory (hard) re-set on it, as this unit has many apps installed.
Any new suggestions would be grately appreciated.

Not your post, it was what I wrote.... Just didn't drank my morning coffee and I wrote something not relevant to help you. Sorry for the confusion
Perhaps the 3.2 OTA update is getting corrupted during the download. It seems to be a zip file of some 357 MB.
Does anyone know in which folder the zip file is stored, and the name of the file?
I'm thinking I could try to delete the file and download it again. Then try to install it
My goal is to avoid a Factory (hard) reset.
For those posting that they're not rooted, it may be helpful to also note if it ever was rooted previously. I unrooted, or thought I did, and was getting hung at the Bee logo with an "!". I had to re-root, unintall anything related to root, including reflashing the stock rom, reversing everything that USB Mount All had done, re-enable the phone checking services and uninstall the battery saving app afterwards, THEN I was able to successfully update. Turns out I really didn't have a need for root access.
I had the same error message and tried twice before it finally went through the third time. I was rooted, but with the stock ROM. I also had an SD card in and removed it for my second try. I did not remove root for any of my attempts. On my third try, I left the SD card in and it updated. Wish we could get some consistency so we could try and determine the cause(s).

2 stupid and 1 not so stupid question(s), but I have to get it out of the way.
Do you have it plugged in? The tablet may not update if the battery is too low.
The other silly question - how much space is it reporting as free? I don't know if this issue still persists for some, but I remember reading a while back where people's tablets were mysteriously 'filled up'. Since you have lots of apps anyway, could you check to make sure you have enough space free?
Finally, are you setting the tablet and wifi to never turn off? I always make sure my wifi is set to always on (which it usually is set to anyway) and also that my screen timer is set to 30m or Never so it doesn't turn off. Just in case it matters. 30m for small updates, Never for large ones.
The file is supposed to download again if it doesn't work - does it not? I have no idea where it goes. A dev may be able to help you there. If you need it to re-download, I think you can just perform a manual check and it should ask you if you want to get it. (I think).
Since some people have reported that the update works WITH the sd card in there - perhaps you can try some reverse psych. and pop in a msd, see if that works.
Let me know how it goes or if you got it to work.
Interesting questions and comments. The answer to all 3 is Yes, Yes, Yes.
Thanks.
This is why I love coming to THIS forum. So many more ideas that help identify and solve the issue. Most of the other forums I looked at said "factory reset, hard reset, factory reset, hard reset..." I come here, and I see "unseat the MSD card, set wifi to always on, set screen blackout to 30 mins, etc." And VOILA! Success!
Mine is a US-based unrooted A500, 16 gig MicroSD card, and lots of apps. I was dreading the thought of doing a hard reset, as I didn't want to lose all the apps (and the info stored therein), and have to spend the better part of a day restoring everything (had to do it before; this is my second A500, as the first was stolen at the Ostiense train station in Rome). So here are the ideas I took from the above posts to get the update to work:
1 - In "Settings" set Wi-Fi Turn Off to "Never" or "Never if plugged in."
2 - Also in "Settings" set Screen Turn Off to "30 minutes."
3 - Power off your tablet, and remove the Micro SD card (if you have one installed).
4 - Power on your tablet, go back into "Settings," and go into the About Tablet section on the bottom left.
5 - Tap "System Update." If the update was downloaded previously, it's likely you'll go straight to the Ready to Install pop-up. If this is the case, run the update, and let it fail.
6 - Once the update fails, go back into the About Tablet section as above and tap "System Update" again. This time, you should get the Download Update pop-up.
7 - Let everything download, and then run the installer when it pops up.
8 - Cross your fingers and toes, and pray to whatever deity you worship that the install is successful. It worked for me at this stage.
Might be something with the wifi or screen blackout settings that causes the download to corrupt. Might be something with the MicroSD card. Whatever it is, give this process a try, and try 2 or 3 times if the first one doesn't go through (as the system may still be trying to use the old corrupted download).
Best of luck to those who still have this issue!
Edited to add: BTW, once everything is working again, don't forget to back into "Settings" and set Screen Turn Off and Wi-Fi Turn Off back to where they were before to save battery life. Forgot to mention that. Oops!

Tried downloading the 3.2 upgrade again, and made it a point to have the Acer full charged, connected to the charger, and in close proximity to the wireless router. The download was successful, and the file unzipped ok and the installation proceeded smoothly as expected.
Many thanks to all those who made suggestions.

Nice! Enjoy
I am relatively new here, but was reading some threads and a couple people have said that the community hasn't found the 13.3.2.7 update to manually force a rollback. A couple days ago I called Amazon because I had updated to 4.5 and needed to go back to root.
Since then I have been looking around for where the patch was saved to and found the scripts that setup for the OS update and the scripts to run it. The scripts show where it is and what commands are called to do the update, but the actual 13.3.2.7 OS seems to be hidden. I know where it says it should be, but its hidden somehow. If this is something anyone wants copies of my files on let me know, if this isn't something the community needs I apologize, just trying to help get this tablet further along.
Either post here or message me if you want/need what I have.
Why don't you just post your findings so far on this thread?
I was under the impression that OTA files are downloaded to the /cache folder, therefore inaccessible without root.
Either way, updates are still verified (see: /system/app/otaverifier.apk) by the system, so I'm not sure how you'd get around that.

I see, that part is already known then. Other posts I read people were still looking for it, but I was sure if i found it many others have too. I'm still looking around though, I found the verification coding also, thanks for that. I am thinking about updating my tablet again, and having them roll it back again, but this time running a packet sniffer. Might possibly get some really good info about the verification process or at least the steps it takes to make the rollback. I did a search but haven't seen anyone try this, it's probably heavily encoded though.
Another thing I noticed while looking around... They put a kill switch fuse in it? That's pretty rough, and what causes it to activate? Software modification or Hardware like Jtags?

once rooted again .it may be possible to modify your build.prop like we were on past firmware to achieve rollback just to initiate download ,it will ultimately fail once it downloaded it and trys to install it will check a few more things it will fail and erase it ...the trick would be not too let the device idle..or to have the battery below I believe 30 percent it may be as high as 40 I'm not sure but I believe under 30 it will refuse to install update delay till charged ,anyway it may buy you time to find it

That is actually a very good idea, something I am testing right now is getting the FireOS to run in VMware. I have a standard Android KitKat OS running, but getting the Kindle's OS to run is giving me a few issues. I am very skittish to try this stuff on my actual device as it's brand new and I don't have a backup... But if I can I will give you idea a shot. Might be able to save it before it deletes. Also if I can get it going in VMware it might be possible to use a debugger to examine the ASM code in great detail.

I didn't have any problem doing the modifications myself and I'm no Pro that's for sure. Never written a line of code in my life. I just tend to thoroughly research and understand before I attempt things and I've been practicing here for a while if you go to the, rollback .0.1 and safestraped thread there is quite detailed instructions serval times throughout the thread I would skim it.you will just be substituting version numbers and kind of a inverse idea compared to what we were doing there but it should accomplish it. I used rOM Toolbox lite I believe as an editor and saved each timeI didn't have any problems with the permissions getting screwed up while tampering with it rOM Toolbox took care of that issue. I have seen tons of people brick trying to make these modifications. But I don't think they understood completely what they were attempting to do it's actually very simple and as long as you do it thoroughly and get all of them changed I have not seen any problems other than maybe having to repeat the process.there are a couple of lines that only use the last section of your version numbers I even changed those back then.

Please upload the file somewhere (preferably to mega). If it doesn't pass the version check we can use my hack to bypass it.
