GPS HELP! - XPERIA X1 General

hi, i no that the x1 does not have a built in GPS.
but i have seen videos where ppl actually use it as a gps.
maybe they install sum sort of application into the phone?
can any1 please explain how does GPS work on the x1?
THanks alot, any information is greatly appreciated...

X1 has built-in GPS so you can use Tom-Tom, Garmin, iGo, ...

Just install the program (garmin, tomtom, iGo or something else for windows mobile). If you won't be able to connect with GPS satellite just do the hard reset on the phone. Than go to Quick GPS in your programs and download the latest gps positions.

Wow sounds like someone just got the X1 out of the box.
1. Go to Start > Settings > System > GPS Settings (or something with GPS)
There you can select what COM port the GPS chipset will use to communicate with the OS or any other software.
2. Use the "HTC GPS tool" to see if you get GPS signals outdoors. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=360477

The X1 doesn't come with any GPS applications installed, but you can add a number of other programs that use the GPS facility.
For example, you can install TomTom Navigator 7, Garmin Mobile 20 or iGo8 for turn-based car satnav.
Or you can use the phone as a GPS locator for something like Geocaching (GPS based treasure hunts). GCz2 / Geocaching
Or you can use Google Maps to find out where you are and let your friends know with Latitude. Google Maps with Latitude
Or you can use the GPS facility to "geotag" photos, that is embed the location where the picture was taken inside the image data. Footprints

so is it normal that when using google map, i cant find any satellite??

if you enabled gps in googlemaps
and of cause stand outside as gps generally don't work in doors
only outside and in cars and the likes

Anything Like This Out There? (Find Your Car)

Someone wrote this program for the Iphone and it looked kind of interesting:

I have the HTC Touch. Is there anything out there similiar?
If you have a GPS utility like TomTom or GPSTuner (with local map) and a GPS mouse, you will have anything like that!
You can even do that with Google Maps, once you've parked, set the flag on the map.
You can make locations in Microsoft Live Search Mobile and then navigate back to them.
problem is if you are relying on GPS is that if you are in a covered parking structure (not open parking lot) you probably won't get gps signal.
GPS mouse??

Cruise + GPS ?

Hello,
Is there any free gps software for the touch cruise ? Like tom tom, but free ?
Google a bit .....
In my opinion iGO8 is the best right now.
Rgds,
Depends where you're located, if in the US/UK, Microsoft Live Search is free and a great app.
I'm located in France..
And IGO8 doesn't seem to be free

QuickGPS data seem to go old quite fast, I update it just before going somewhere to make sure. Bad experiences with couple days old data, then TT6 cannot find enough satellites and it will loose signal quite easily.
The only GPS navigation software I know is Nav4All : http://www.nav4all.com/site2/www.nav4all.com/index.php
However, it needs a Data connexion to download maps (not working with WAP - it needs a true Data connexion).
Cheers.
OziExplorer is for free and there are maps
also for free
You can also use Google Maps in mobile Version.
It's not a real navigation Software but shows you the route and can connect to Built in GPS Antenna.
You can choose between mapview and satelite view like Google Maps/Earth.
All Maps of the whole World are included but you need a Dataconnection for download. It is possible to use the internal cache and surf the maps before going out, so you don't need a connection outside.
For me it was very helpful sometimes on places where are no official roads so TT does not work.

GPS usable without data connection?

Hey everybody,
is there any possibility to use the built-in google maps application without data connection? After disabling every data data connection and activating gps, I get an error telling me that a data connection is needed.
This doesn't sound logic, does it? I mean, I activated the GPS-module, so where is the prob?
Can anybody help me?
THX
Sebastian
The GPS will work without a data connection.....however, GoogleMaps needs a connection to download the maps of your area.....
Alternatively, you can use onboard nav solutions like TomTom7, Navigon, Igo, McGuider etc.....none of them free, though....
Is there an app that will simply use the onboard GPS to give you your position, speed, bearing, etc? Just a position would be useful. Either lat and long, or, say, OS grid ref.
Have a look to Nonigpsplot or Visualgpsce
Checking them out now. Thanks very much.
Personally I'm using BeeLineGPS, a commercial successor of VisualGPSce
That looks good too. Thanks.

It's a free googlemaps offline maps !

Recommend GPS Softwares For X1?

Hey guys.
Im looking for GPS programs/softwares that are compatiable with the X1.
I heard many like TomTom, Garmin, etcetc..
Just wondering if there are any other recommened GPS softwares that do not require any internet connectivity. (for use especially in Asia countries)
Thanks!
TomTom doesn't require internet connectivity. I have TT7 on my X1 and do not use any data while navagating (I have not enabled QuickGPS which would use some data though).
I find TT7 very good and prefer it to my cars inbuilt gps.
I also use run.gps uv trainer as an exercise log - again no data connection needed.
A lot of GPS software don't use data. Garmin, Tomtom.. all you have to do is pre-load what maps you need on the card and your good to go.
I have tried all of them and IMHO the best one is IGO8.

where can i get a download if it?
I really like the UI on TomTom and I've been using it in both my WinMo's. Currently v7.910 in my X1 with the latest European maps and it works like a charm.
QuickGPS is set to automatically download data only when I attach the X1 to a computer.
I am pretty convinced that other nav software like Navigon and iGO will work fine too. Stick to one of the most popular because you will be able to find much more resources on the web, POIs and such.
Are they free? Or do i have to pay for the softwares?

Some are free, some you have to pay for.
Here's a good index of a lot of free GPS programs, you can read about them and see what fits your needs best:
http://www.maps-gps-info.com/fgpfw.html#WindowsMobile
what im about to request is quite demanding...
so.. please do not take it to heart.
Can you provide(or spoonfeed) me with one thats is totally free, with all maps downloaded so that i do not need internet connectivity when i use my GPS. Best is it comes with Asia maps.
(the list Flying H4x0r gave is too confusing.. and i couldnt figure which requires interenet, and which doesnt)
Thank you.
There are GPS Tools for free but there is no free navigation system on the market that does real offline navigation like TomTom, Navigon etc. So, forget it.
Google maps require an internet connection right?
mobile gmaps (google mgmaps) support online and offline maps. it is a java app and similar to google maps in operation. It does not do turn by turn navigation - but its better than nothing and its free.
garmin is your best bet. There are ways to get it free, but that would be highly ILLEGAL and i dont recommend it.

For offline maps, do i need to pre-download them?
So, the offline maps only allow me to find out where I am, is there right? :x
Thank you
I have installed TT7, iGo8 and Sygic Mcguider 7.70.
Bye.

Garmin has some problems on my X1i.
The backlight doesn't stay on, the phone keeps entering stand by. That's really annoying, and it doesn't happen with Tom Tom 7.
Is it just me not configuring something?

go to settings (on your garmin) -> Display -> backlight override -> tick always on
otherwise just go to your phone setting ->system -> power -> advanced -> untick the "turn of device if not used for...."
when the system goes to sleep, it cuts off the gps connection. It took me a while to figure that out. LOL

gps program for my htc t3238

Hi,
does anyone knows a good gps program, that doesnt need to connect to the enternet ?
i forgot to mention its windows mobile 6.5.

ohad
I use
Garmin
Ozi
Gps Tuner
There is a program that with it, you can easily download maps and satellite view from Google and use it in garmin....
I use Garmin when I want to go to a place and need navigation help while I am driving...but for other uses I use OZI because I downloaded all of maps I need from google...
Good luck!
