Rosie On A non-Hero ROM - G1 General

Is it possible to put rosie on a rom that isn't hero (like one of jf's roms).

I was thinking the same thing. What I did was updated to the hero rom and then backed up rosie.apk. Then went to the ion rom and tried to install rosie.apk through astro and it said that the apk cannot be installed on this phone. Could be some version check or something but I didnt bother to try any further.

There would be alot of HTC framework you would need to implement to a point where it would be pretty much hero to get it to work from my understanding.

From what I've read, Rosie (and few other HTC apps require a modified android core, so to get Rosie on a JF release, you'd use a rom that contained a majorty of the Hero code.

By the time you're done getting all the files for Rosie and it's associated widgets to run on a Google core you'd be running Hero. What's the point? Are we done asking this question now?

No. There will be at least 6 more threads about this very topic.

Hi,
I actually tried on 5.02h.
It says that it cannot be installed.
So yes the answer is no.

have you tried it on Rogers? i ask b/c u list it in your sig.
since that is HTC based (to my understanding at least)...this might be a possibility.
still though...i don't see much point

Technically, yes it can, since in reality, all rosie is is rosie on a non-hero rom (it's still very much android at the core). If you're talking about a simple file swap, it is possible, but by the time you're done swapping files, you'll have the htc modified framework again. However, rosie is still also very much the same Launcher apk from google, it's got a few tweaks here an there, and i think that with some heavy modification of the source it can be made to work similarly on a stock android framework. That's just for the desktop elements. The widgets are a different story, if you want binary compatibility with the rosie widgets, then, again, you have to import the HTC library, or reverse engineer it and implement your own.
It is possible, after all, Android is in many ways a community OS, so you can modify it as you please, but a simple patch up work and file swap? then no, it's not that easy.

::sigh:: quit asking these questions, think of it this way:
Have you tried running a .NET app, without having the .NET framework installed.
It's gonna say missing framework.
Hero is basically Android + a bunch of HTC written frameworks. And that framework is written under the assumption that there is 512MB ROM/256 RAM. (on their unreleased phone)
Hence the slowdowns on our lovely G1 with only 256MB ROM and 192RAM
Other Thoughts:
T-Mobile always does this crap though, give us the crappiest hardware (bare minimum, so they save money.)
Remember the MDA and then the WING, whilst at the same time AT&T's Pocket PC specs were far superior.

I've given it some preliminary tries from an informational standpoint but that means going back to a plain Jane Rogers build. The really ****ty thing about the Hero build with Rosie is that Rosie and it's associated widgets are all interlaced with each other. You pull a few and that whole house of cards comes crashing down. The Hero Music widget for example requires the htc.framework. Before htc.framework and associated libraries releases permissions to the Music widget it references a series of DRM library files. I stopped after that but I can almost guarantee that the DRM libraries have some other off the wall dependencies only found on that specific build. HTC did this for a reason and it's obvious that they consider their Home replacement and widgets as a single package. Even if you managed to retain the HTC framework and replace all the dependencies it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if some of these outer lying files made references to specific bit of code only found in the HTC core. HTC has done it before and it's name is TouchFlo3D.
Unless someone really wants to break down Rosie line by line it really ought be considered an all or nothing venture here at XDA. We really need to drop the mentality that HTC builds are drag and drop like theming was pre-cramfs. And even then, cramfs are just identifiers anyway. HTC is a tricky bastard. Always has been, always will be. In my honest opinion, if you want Rosie on a non Rosie build you best brush up on your mimicry skills.

Maybe it's just me...but aside from the HTC widgets, what exactly do you all love about the rosie UI so much? the little wheel that you can scroll between your desktops? How many people use that much desktop space? in all honesty, it's not *THAT* much more functional. For me the important portions of the Hero build are more behind the scenes..solid twitter app, lockscreen tied to music, notifications, and calendar events..the nice black notifications window...most importantly, without losing performance. /shrug - my version of the hero build is screenshotted here..works for me, even though I don't have the 'rosie' UI i get all of the important things that matter to me.

What build is that? Or is it custom?

Question: Does the lockscreen actually have the slide unlock? If so, you may have just sold me on your Hero mod. That's the ONE thing that I'm still utterly and completely in love with, and there are a LOT of bugs in the current Hero build, though w/o widgets it does run at least tolerably. I'm still hating the lack of landscape mode and led notifications.

It's the hero build from haykuro..with a lot of work done to it to make it perform the way that I'm after. I'm out of town next week but I'm hoping to get a list of all of the changes that I've made compiled and make it usable if anyone wants it.

I would be one. You've done exactly what I want out my Rogers build and the only reason I'm on it is for Exchange. I've started to learn how to do all this myself for that very reason.

Yep - lockscreen works fine and also includes the music/notification functionality...attached a screenshot of that just now.
no LED notifications still - which is a pain in the ass I agree. The build I'm using is running Launcher.apk - not Rosie - and does autorotate.

Thanks for the heads up. I thought running the Launcher.apk might remove the awesome lock screen. I'm a bit more happy about running this build, if only we could get some working notifications!

yea uh, you'll have to push Mail.apk and libHtcMail_jni.so back -- but it should work. my corporate exchange servers here suck **** apparently and only work with moxier for anything. I've never been able to get the Mail client or anything but Moxier to work with my corporate account.

i don't know about anyone els but the one and only problem i have with hero is incoming call response time, zenulator and others have worked hard on speed. and right now i'm using the latest vogue hero.sqfs bundle. and it is pretty fast. i just need to be able to receive calls a little faster instead of one ring before vm.
i'm asking anyone that codes or knows how to code to look into what can be done to improve this.
i know that having phone not vibrate on calls, using ogg ringtones help a little, the renicer script aswell. but is there anything else we can do?

Speaking of that, whats this all about on the Vogue-Hero google page? I've downloaded it to keep a copy on hand but what improvements will we see with that file?
i was using the latest hero build with the basefiles from 9/08 and everything was pretty smooth. then i updated this morning to basefiles from 9/15 and everything is slower. takes longer to switch pages and respond to anything i do.

Here is my problem. I keep trying the latest donuts and sqsh based systems and even with fresh data files, I always get the dreaded Blank home screen with no icons. It takes around a minute to repaint them. The version I keep going back to is the cupcake-based hero themed system. It is distinguished by only having one arrow on the left side of the app drawer handle. It works great and hardly ever does the slow down thing. I just hope that when we get BT all sorted out that either the image will work with this system or the sqsh based systems are up to the same level of performance that this one is.
Cheers.

I don't have any of these problems with my builds so you might be missing a step or using the wrong files. Granted the xrom and cyanogen builds at vogue-hero are experimental/beta quality and hence why they stay there and don't go to the main vogue-android page. The latest xrom is using cupcake/donut built from the android master branch and is as fast as any build out there with the right setup and you can't use it with an existing data.img because it has a different code base. And sqsh has nothing to do with the level of performance of any build infact it should be faster than cramfs. It's the code that the system image is based off of and what extra apps and libraries and frameworks are included that determines how fast it's going to be.
Zen since you seem to be up and responding I have a quick question that I am not looking for too in depth of a response, just a brief overview...
What exactly is the user.conf responsible for? If I am running just the basic ION version is there any reason to keep the rogers or hero based files? Are they ever called upon when running the regular ION build?
Thank you!

you don't need them if your running ion. the user.conf files are just for people to tweak their own settings for each build. so you have the ability to turn compcache/swap on/off things like that. ion doesn't really need it but it does help it out it you run a lot of programs and widgets.
I've got a vogue and a diamond on sprint that I switch back and fourth between pretty often.
I thought maybe I could get a vzw htc vogue off of ebay, and get it working on my sprint plan, and put android on it.
If I did that, would GPS be crippled on it in android?
The main reason I wanted to do it was I like the white case and the vzw screens are all nice, I have a sprint vogue with a bad screen.
I'm excited that Zen said he was repackaging the nkhero release as it is essentially the latest-stable Ion build. The experimental builds are nice and essential to advancing development but alot of users are looking for everyday stable usage (and the added Hero theme is always sweet eye-candy)!

I use the latest hero-vogue build. go to m.opera.com/next on your android browser and click download to pc. download the jar. it will run with java and is awesome. it runs smoother and has more eye candy than any browser i ever tried. and i really like the keyboard that comes with it!

OK, this is the first non-mssmison build I've tried in a while. I'm trying xrom 1.5. New data, and fresh files all around. Seems to be pretty good, but still the browser chokes a bit more than the non-sqsh build. Is there a way to limit app processes anymore? I looked for dev tools but it is not included.
hey zen, is it normal for me to be getting these fsck000.REC fsk0001.REC ect..
files on my storage card? if not, do you know what they are? the number just keeps goin up after every reboot and just keeps adding files.
Also, has anyone got a driver to work with Vista?

Squashfs has nothing to do with the browser. If your compairing the1.5 xrom to the 1.4 then the differences are due to different browser builds aand the fact that the 1.5 build has some donut parts that 1.4 didn't have.

You can delete them.
Probably something to do with the basefiles, but I haven't tracked the cause yet.
They're the result of the automatic filesystem check on the sdcard fat partition on boot.

Sprint Hero- Mods & Themes (3rd clock 10-17-09)

Sprint Hero system files

This could be used as thee thread for the tweaking of the Hero from Sprint. I made a request and it was accomplished by "Chocmatic" at PPCGeeks. Thanks to him we have this now for our tweaking, modding, theme making creativity.
To those Mods, let me know if you need anything I'll be glad to assist creating themes/icons for our phones..
You can also add the apk files (applications) into your current rom.. just follow instructions below.. now we got Footprint, Sprint TV, Sprint Nav, Sprint Visual VM, etc..
To install APK applications on your Android Phone do the following:
1. Copy the APK file you want to install to your phones memory card and insert the card into your Android phone.
2. Go to Android Market and search for the Apps Installer application.
3. Open it and click on the Install Button.
4. After it is installed, just open it. It will show you all the APK files stored directly in the root directory of your memory card.
5. Just click on the application you want to install and it will be installed.

I might as well ask this hear as I'm highly considering getting a Hero, but does anyone think that with the current state of the Vogue-Hero project that still getting a Sprint Hero is worth it? Certain hardware features like the capacitative screen, acceleromter, and larger higher resolution screen seem to be the selling point for me.

If anyone with GSM is working on it, let me know. I've about given up porting it for the time being. Audio is distorted probably because there are constant (as fast as logcat can update) errors about CDMA/GSM issues. I can't make a phone call because it's too choppy-- robot speak. I've got ATT but I hear CDMA users can use it pretty well. That's making it hard for me to try to commit time to taking it further but help might get things going again

It's /framework/libgps.so among others. I didn't put that over along with the camera and audio because it would crash relentlessly. It's early, pretty and full of features so I'd like/need help especially GSM support since I can't use it right now

[Android] Android Media Update Package

With apologies to mssmison, I've removed the updated build I posted--an update package would've been a better solution, but in the excitement with all of the changes, I didn't consider it.
With the changes made thanks to vilord, it is extremely simple for users to update their own builds with whatever customizations they please. Rather than provide updates to others builds, I'm going to start a new project, with the focus (firstly) to provide a compendium of Android system audio. This will include ringtones, notifications, alarms, and UI audio.
Many of these sounds are the same from device to device, but some devices do come with customized audio, so my objective is to provide as many different devices worth of dynamic audio, so if you please, you can have a wide array of audio choices to use on your phone with this update package.
I'm working on the first update package now, and I'll update this thread once finished.
how about making an androidupdate.tar for those that have already installed and make use of that nice new menu option.

+1 for that
Advantage #2 of doing that, when mssmison releases a new version, you can still apply your update over it without starting over (as long as there aren't any file clashes)
After flashing the 320 nbh file and trying to load the installer (Vol UP), I am getting the following error:
Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception in interrupt.
What is causing this?

I searched all the directories for that file (com.htc.rosieutility) and its nowhere to be found.
I actually searched for *rosie* and all it came up with was:
/sdcard/rosie_scroll
/sdcard/download/Rosie_Icons.zip
Jesus ive searched the phone high and low. I am so ****ing lost. I dont know wtf is going on here.
was your search global? it seems you only searched your sd card...
why not just leave rosie and use helix? seems to me itd be the most stable.
The rom without rosie is very stable.. The only issue you will have is when you boot up, youll have 1 force close. After that the only time it comes up is if you are downloading something from the market. Which it doesnt even always come up.
For the most part the force close doesnt even mean much. I just got used to it being there. I never cared to look into it. But i will now.
Edit: also comes up when uninstalling something. but i dont do that much
Have you tried deleting
HtcAddProgramWidget.apk
hey fyi ic3 is completely aosp, and has fixed the utility issue. check his thread out, ppl seem satisfied.
Im pretty sure i figured it out
delete these
HtcAddProgramWidget.apk <-- If you havent already
com.android.launcher2.apk <-- I think this is what did it
I read the ice rom thread and all he did was use an older version of Launcher, so I just deleted it and rebooted without getting a force close (first time its worked)
I think that did it!
Sweet!
Yeah, I was getting the one FC at boot, and sometimes in the market, but I was also getting it while in the browser, sometimes in People, other times just at random.
I am using Helix.
So far so good.
Thank you!!!

I tried ic3....
I'm just not a fan of completely AOSP. I like the touch of HTC apps here and there.
I'm slowly getting FreshToast exactly how I want it.
Its super fast, and getting more and more stable even with JIT.
The only other thing I'm trying to narrow down is this memory leak type issue.
Sometimes with NO active running services or apps, the available RAM will drop as low as 55MB, then withing a few minutes I'll check it and it'll go back up to 70-80MB. Doesn't seem to affect performance too much, and I'm COMPLETELY taking a stab in the dark here but maybe has something to do with JIT?
I dunno. I'm going to try and disable JIT and see if the available RAM stays in the 60-70 range.
I just removed the HTC Mms.apk with the AOSP Mms.apk to try and cut back on keyboard lag.
I tried going with the AOSP/standard keyboard... I think ive just been typing on the HTC_IME keyboard for way too long that my muscle memory has been trained to it. I keep screwing up with the vanialla keyboard. Also the spell correct doesn't seem to work as well as it does the HTC keyboard. I have no vibration or sound, as well as no key preview to try and cut back on lag.
It seems that the actual spell correction is what is lagging the keyboard down so bad. If I turn off all spell correct/auto complete it seems to be much snappier.

it sounds like compcache is working
So is the memory increase a result of compcache compressing the data to the ramz swap space? Or the opposite? Ive been reading on google code about compcache and of course, I cant wrap my redneck head around it.
I seem to def. like this better than autokiller. ROMs with autokiller seem to kill active running apps too much, especially with the browser if there were a few flash ads on the site. It would just randomly close.
The only thing I'm doing now is going through the com.htc.resources.apk and changing the green to blue. I'm hoping its easy enough of just editing the pngs to blue. Im sure though, somewhere Im going to have to edit some xml files somewhere that have a color hex associated with it. Im just not a fan of green, and am getting sick of it hah. I like blue
is there any way you can compile a signed update that i can flash, that is exactly what you have, Fresh Toast 1.1 with no Sense and JIT enabled..?
I'd be more than happy to, if I knew how to!
I assume it would just be an update script, but i've never done that before.

Just make a nandroid of your rom.. Dont include the ext partition. And maybe delete some personal stuff. lol
You could make a nandroid.. Then boot up again, delete all personal stuff and sign out of everything. Make another nandroid (the one you can send to people). And then flash back to your nandroid of all your personal stuff back on it.
I think it would be easier to just make a tutorial as I didn't really do anything that hard. Just removed some files here, replaced some there, and re-configure some stuff.
As a matter of fact it may be easier to just zip a bunch of files, and make a batch file to do it, as pretty much everything was done through ADB.
I don't like the idea of nandroid, wouldn't want to accidents include some paid app, or risk personal data getting in there.
Actually I'm going to read up on making update zips. Sent from my HERO200 using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk

[ROMs] Captivate Touch (no phone) v3.1 - Update 12/28 WORKING

******NEW THREAD*******
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2347220
If you want to take up this or a similar project on your own, I will provide you with instrucations on what to modify. HOWEVER, you must get permission first from each Rom Chef, as these are their works and we are simply modifying for our own use.
Captivate Touch:
GB via CM7 is working very well. Camera is functional and I am testing the GPS. See notes below. If you are going to install GAPPS, make sure you remove the setup wizard apk from the zip file.
I am running Launcher7 on mine so that my toddler can easily see her books and games on the launcher screen. Will post screens later.
Changelog:
3.1: CM7 based Touch. Working.
3.0: GB Fail, could not get camera working on any GB rom.
2.0: Fixed GPS, removed mms, added dialer back for secret code access.
1.1: Removed modem lib (broke GPS)
1.0: Removed no signal notification
I take no responsibility... yada yada yada. What you do to your phone is your business, don't blame me.
First off, these ROMs are not my creation they belong to the chefs that cooked them or the devs that built them. All I did was modify them to suit my needs. If you like these ROMs, please buy them a beer and support future development. They have endorsed this project and for that I thank them. The camera apk in the froyo version is GizmoDroid's modded camera as the stock and hacked camera from SGS Tools did not function properly.
The goal of this project was to a Captivate Rom completely devoid of any cell phone functions. Why? Well, my job required me to switch to another OS, but I had grown dependent on my Android apps. As such I have modified these ROMs to give us a "Touch-like" device, devoid of any cell phone functions, and with amazing battery life.
Yes, I know that you can just put the phone in Airplane mode, remove them sim card, disable the data network etc, but phone functions still remain and its a not a complete nor elegant experience.
What works:
Testing, but so far everything but the phone
What doesn't:
Some lock screens display (no service)
Install Instructions:
I have provided links to each ROM's original thread. Please follow the instructions there.
So here you go:
Captivate Touch v2.0, Cognition Edition - KB1 2.2 by DesignGears
Based on Cognition 4.4.6
Original Rom Thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=964583

Captivate Touch v3.1, Cyanogen Edition by CyanogenMod
Based on Cyanogen 7.1
Original Rom Thread: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Captivate:_Full_Update_Guide
Download: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=438L2MQU
If you want to install GAPPS, I recommend removing the setup wizard APK from the .zip as it was giving me problems.
Confirmed working.

Awesome. I've thought about getting a second Captivate just for this exact purpose. I like the idea of the iTouch but I'm not a big Apple fan. I like being able to expand my storage and replace a failed battery.

Yep, although Cognition uses Voodoo lagfix and I always play it safe by flashing back to stock before installing a new custom rom.
Cool!! Definitely trying this out!
I don't know if you can add it in but on some roms, ie cm7, there is the previous, play/pause, and next for the media controls on the lock screen which would be probably the 2nd best feature of the touch Rom other than the no phone part

Maybe you can try DAGr8's rom, it has 9 lockscreens with media controls, also if i am not wrong, all the 3 roms here have media contols in lockscreen
oh wow. this is a great idea! props!
I'm all for what you are trying to accomplish but I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around this, what does it matter if you still have the phone (that still has the phones functionality) because of your company unless it was a company phone, but if thats the case then why are you modding it to only work as a smaller tablet. This makes me assume that you were issued a company phone other than your cappy? I also assume 2 other things here, you still need it to work wifi and possibly still need a data signal or is this what you need gone al together. to remove the signal bar at the top look in the theme thread about modding the notification bar, I accidently did this one time, I would have to poke around but I manage I could do it again.
But for whatever reason you want to do this have you tried porting a galaxy tab rom to this by chance, is it even possible, I wouldn't know why it wouldn't be possible.

Yes, I had to purchase a non-android device for work and do not want to pay for multiple lines and data plans. The goal was to continue to use the many apps I purchased, improve battery life, and create a more complete expereince. Simply removing the SIM card leave the cell radio software components intact, giving you the emergency call option notification, the missing sim notification, etc. By removing all of the components associated with the phone (except the lost signal notification - sigh) the experience feels "complete" and intentional, rather than hacked together.
If you can figure out how to remove the notification bar that would be great. I am not a developer, coder etc, just a tinkerer who isn't afraid of bricking his phone. As for the Galazy Tab rom, I would not know where to begin.
The ultimate goal will be to port the ROMs from the Galaxy S WIFI 4 and 5, but in the meantime, I will settle for their native apps missing from the captivate.

Interesting..
I see where you are going with this. Two questions; Does removing all phone functions render wifi useless? Does doing this save significant battery life over airplane mode/no sim?
Thanks!

I have not tested battery life compared to airplane mode, but Standby on the Cognition variant seems to be 5-7 days.
Wifi, BT, and GPS all work perfectly.
For now as a "hack" to get the look your going for you could possibly edit the stat_sys_signal_null.png to a blank image maybe that will work for you, it will most likely be in SystemUI.apk in /system/app if I had time I would do it myself but issues at home will prevent me from playing with this tonight
EDIT: Sorry for some reason I thought you were on a 2.3 rom, Personally I would suggest you try this with DAGr8 symply galaxy, I just removed SystemUI.apk from it reboot and now have no notification bar at all, but everything seems to be functioniong correctly.
With your 2.2 ROM you will most likely find the null signal png in /framework/framework-res.apk in the res/drawable-hdpi may have v4 on there too.

I was going to suggest the same - simply replace the signal bar images with blank/100% transparent images.
After playing around with it today thats gonna be your best option. Yoi really dont want to remove your bar altogether this hinders your ability to mount to pc or to use debugger

If u plan on buying an entirely new phone why not just buy a galaxy player if it's out. Its essentially an itouch
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA Premium App
I love this idea. A well developed platform used as a simple media device. It'll blow the doors off anything available designed for that purpose!
Insert GB for bonus points.
I think this would work so much better with ginger and ginger would work so much better as this

I guess he can unlock the second captivate, use it as pmp. And use it as phone when travelling abroad by going back to the favorite rom. Well, this cannot be achieved on itouch or on Samsung Galaxy pmp.
