Okay, here's the sad story so far:
I have a (previously) unmodded G1, with normal T-Mobile software. Yesterday morning around 5AM I get the little notice that I can upgrade to Cupcake. Unfortunately, it's 5 in the morning, I couldn't sleep, and I wasn't thinking all that straight... so I decided to root my phone and upgrade it to 1.5 instead.
So I downgraded to RC29, got myself root access, and installed the latest Jesus Freke build. Now the fun starts. As soon as the phone boots into the JF build I get constant android.process.acore force close errors. And I do mean constant, I force close, and it pops up again, force close, pop up again ad infinatum. I reflashed a few more times, varying the order of installing the radio update and misc. stuff like that, but still no luck.
So I decide to go back to the T-Mobile build without root access. I mean, I lived without it before, and not having root is better than not having a functioning phone, right? So I download the official cupcake update from google's dev site and install that. Woohoo, no more force closing, it looks like everything works!
Orrrrr not. I can't get into Settings now. I've tried to open Settings from the home menu, from a shortcut on the desktop, and through the menu button. Every time I try to do so, it will open up a black screen (like it's starting to load the settings menu), stay there for anywhere between 1-4 seconds, then go back to the main desktop screen. Everything else on the phone works, Market, Camcorder, soft keyboard, everything. Most apps I've downloaded also seem to work. However, when I installed the Toggle Settings app and tried to toggle the GPS, it popped into the settings menu with a black screen with the Security and Location text at the top, and then promptly went back to the app without changing the GPS.
I've tried everything I can think of at this point and the almighty Google doesn't seem to have any answers, anyone else able to give me some help? It would be much appreciated.
Update and bump, because I really need some help here:
I flashed the phone back to RC30, and left it overnight. In the morning there was an OTA update to cupcake available, so I installed that. Unfortunately, even with the OTA update the settings menu still won't stay up. Any advice?

Silly question, but did you do an alt-W to wipe the phone?
yep, wiped it many times during my trials and travails.
before or after the issue with the settings menu?
I've actually tried it both ways, wiped or not wiped, the settings issue remains the same.

Hello everyone, I've got an interesting problem that I want the experts here at XDA to help me troubleshoot. Feel free to ask questions as I know there's probably a million variables at this point with stuff installed, uninstalled, gps, root, task killers, etc.
alrighty with that said, I did the e-wrecked gps fix (changing the operation mode and server location+port). That seems to work great in terms of time to lock on my position as well as improved accuracy. Over the next couple of days I noticed some really choppy and lengthy phone start ups after the fix.
Eventually it got to (and currently is at) a point where it kept rebooting the phone, or at least touchwiz. It would load up, scan media, search for the network, do all the start up stuff, then lock up, and turn the screen off. Hitting the lock button/power button does nothing while it resets itself. Then it resets to the lock screen, the screen lights up and it goes into "searching" for the tmo network while doing the storage preparations, and other boot up stuff. It does not restart from cold (with the vibrant, tmo, and galaxy animations, only the lock screen and OS boot process)
Anyone else got any funky restarts going on, for whatever reason? I basically want to start seeing what would trigger this behavior. I started uninstalling stuff one by one trying to figure out why its doing that but sometimes it boots up fine, sometimes it boots but doesn't ever find tmo's network, and sometimes it just does the above.
Observations:
1. It will always boot up fine if the SIM card is out.
2. The last time it did it was today while I was at work, listening to music while the phone was charging. Im noticing that the phone gets pretty hot while charging and really hot if you're using while its charging (getting apps, surfing the web, playing games, etc)
So any thoughts from the tech gurus here? anyone have similar behavior in the past on other phones? is the heat affecting the sim card negatively? I can (and have) put my simcard back in my treo 680 backup phone with no issues whatsoever.
New observation, it consistently does the reset process as soon as the "Adjust Time and Date" as it registers/syncs with the network.
UPDATE: so, i did some research, ended up at the setCPU thread and saw that when set to OnDemand some people's phones experienced similar tendencies. Problem is, mine was already set to auto-detect and "Conservative". I un-checked start at boot, and tried again. Same problem. I uninstalled setCPU completely and my phone appears to be back to normal.
I'll update again if anything changes.
so one of the things that i removed during my troubleshooting was my corporate exchange account. When i added it back. it did its initial sync fine and gave me my calendar and contacts. I then rebooted and the problem came back.
I removed the account and rebooted. it went through two cycles of the restarts and on the third one, it worked. I left it alone after that.
I then was showing my friend some things (browser differences) and had 3 browsers open. It froze as i went to close Dolphin HD. Rebooted and now its back to the cycle.
Mine did this also. Installed several apps, woke up to find a slow phone. Resets galore. A quick reset to defaults and app restore fixed it, sans setcpu of course.
From XDA App on SGS-Vibrant
my phone resets itself also as described above, but not really doing anything in particular. i dont have a whole lot of apps installed. i even was using google maps the other day and after it started up the screen went black and the device was unresponsive until the screen came back and it said searching and the media scanner was running.
well first off thanks for responding lol. i thought i was by myself out here.
secondly, i found that if i leave it alone and let it go through its cycle, it does eventually boot up ok (this is recently, before, it was endless). i havent restarted my phone (im afraid to lol) since it did it on its own yesterday (showing my friend the browsers).
since yesterday, i've used it for navigation (motonav), serveral installs, downloaded podcasts, rss feeds, etc and its been ok (even while charging and wifi on). again, havent actually restarted it since yesterday because its actually functioning for once.
Lastly, i unchecked the auto update time and date from network in the settings just to see if that makes a difference because based on previous expereience that is the point where it freezes and resets. Thanks for chiming in and let me know if there's any other advice you have
I'd suggest a reset as mentioned above.
Been checking out this site for awhile but this is my first time posting, today my phone started to have this problem and it just bootloops touchwiz if i have a simcard in the phone.
It works fine without a simcard but my problem is it will not let me turn of auto update of time and date, i have tried disabling this setting and it just enables itself again. I have also noticed that if I started messing around with time and date settings even without a sim touchwiz reloads once. I guess im gonna give a reset a go.

sorry, noob question (i came from winmo and a touch pro 2), what does "a quick reset to defaults" mean? is that like a factory wipe i.e. phone will be brand new again, gotta root again and reinstall everything, change settings, etc?

Root will stick but settings and apps/app data will be gone. It briefs you on what is and isn't lost when you do a factory reset.
Smae problem, its setcpu!
SetCPU with any settings will do this.
It needs an update, the auto detect some how loses and
will set the cpu to 19mhz max and min.
This is too slow to process. I rebooted and pressed settings and uninstalled it
while I could. Seems to behave once out of touchwiz.
For me it was another app not setcpu I never used it. After i did a reset i restored all my apps with titanium backup and once i restarted my phone it looped again. So i did another restore and left off all the apps that i installed right before the problem started and so far i think for me at least one of these caused it
Google maps update
google translate
the extra language pack for translate
barnacle wifi tether
hero of sparta
these are apps that I installed right before the problem happened and without these my phone works fine I am going to see if i can find that one that caused my problem.
It's not the maps update because my phone works fine with it.
It was hero of sparta a gameloft game from there web market funny thing is its suppose to work on the vibrant while dungeon hunter which works fine would only give nexus as a check out option. Anyway im going to try to get a refund tomorrow.
I get the same touchwiz reboot but for me it has only ever happened while using google maps. I do not use set cpu, but I have applied the gps fix. It is more than a little annoying. I have done a system wipe but the problem persists.

yes, if you have setcpu, uninstall it - its buggy with the galaxys
- sometimes you can't wake your phone (if you set a screen off profile), forcing you to do a battery pull
- constant launcher restarts

and this is why i started the thread, to make sure i wasnt all alone. i have everything you have installed as well, but it was doing it before i picked up hero of sparta (and nova, and asphalt 5, man those guys make some good phone game lol).
anyways i just installed barnacle wifi tether yesterday so thats not it either (at least for me). That leaves the google stuff, out of the apps in your list, all of which were installed when i first got the problem, and are still on there after I've removed setCPU

ok so, contacts, text messages, etc stay? Meaning if i do a factory reset, root stays, and all app stuff can be taken care of by, say, AppBrain since it has a running list of everything installed and knows where to get it to install it again? I apprecicate the advice, but this would still be a last resort sort of thing. my phone has worked fine for the past few days but I also havent restarted it yet either
just a quick update, my phone still does this if i reboot my phone (which is never now that i got my 32gb sd card), but for the first time ever hero of sparta caused it to happen while the phone is on. I uninstalled it so we'll see.
Ok, so my phone will not vibrate at ALL anymore. I don't want to pay the $50 to get a new one, and I don't want to have to revert back to stock and unroot and take it to Verizon to see if they can fix it.
So here's the details of what happened. I don't know if it's fixable, but I thought I'd see if anyone could offer some advice.
I was running DL30 Blackhole, very basic. Had a theme installed over it. Everything was running perfectly fine for a while. And then I was getting on the internet to do something, and connected to wifi. The wifi was through my college, so you had to login on their homepage instead of just entering a password, and the page wasn't coming up, internet was being extremely slow. So I tried turning off mobile data to see if it might force me to login to the page for wifi. Turned of 3G. Nothing happened. Turned off wifi. Turned 3g back on. Then I got a google system force close error and my phone rebooted itself.... Now I have no vibration AT ALL. No hatic feedback, no vibration for notifications. Nothing.
There was nothing even related to vibration that should have happened in this situation, my phone just freaked out. Didn't drop it or hit it on anything at all, it was laying flat on a table. So I don't know if something just fried my phone's vibration or what, but I would love it if someone out there had a suggestion for me.
I'd try just following the steps to update to super clean 2.4. some kernels act up on your version and drop the vibration. It happened to me. 2.4 is running awesome

Yeah I forgot to put that in the first post. I actual did a complete system wipe. Back to stock DL09, flashed the EB01 modem, and SC 2.4 over it. And still no vibration. I did all that this morning.
Also had a weird glitch where after I installed most of my apps I tried to boot into recovery and instead my phone decided to do a data wipe again, but that wasn't a HUGE issue (as long as it doesn't happen again).

Try reverting back to stock again and prior to going back up to eb01 and superclean...wipe a few times.
I had a similar issue

I had a similar issue. I actually flashed my phone all the way back to stock. Still no vibrate. I think there could be an issue with the vibrate motor on the fascinate.
I say that because there was nothing I could do to bring vibrate back. All of sudden, it began working again for one day. After that one day vibrate and haptic working, it stopped working for another couple of days. Then, I dropped the phone on accident. Vibrate came back. Eventually, it stopped working again so I took the phone to verizon and they ordered me a new one.. No charge. I bought my phone in Sept 2010.
Good Luck!
The first couple times I played Madden 11 everything was great. Now when I try to launch it, the splash screen comes up for a second, then an all yellow screen with white footballs, then an all black screen with a white blinking footbal in the lower right, then it goes back to the home screen.
What's going on here? How can I fix it? I've powered off and on, removed the battery, all those simple things. Please don't recommend a root - I'm just not ready for something like that.

Try going to manage applications in settings, and clearing the data for madden
This didn't work. My android market won't launch either.
If I go to check for a system update, it just says checking for update for over 15 minutes.....

I assume you're on Verizon... My system update is doing the same thing as is someone elses in another thread. Seems like its down or something.
Yes, Verizon. I've only had the phone for 1.5 weeks, the system update has never worked. Madden only worked twice and the market only worked for the first day or so. Now nothing is working on this phone. I'm about to see if Verizon will exchange it.

Try clearing data in the market see if that works.
As for Madden I only tried it once, but based on this I tried it again today and it crashed on me twice before i could actually get back and into a game, and it runs slow as crap on the menus and stuff, something seems definitely wrong.
Without a root, is there a Firmware update or something? Perhaps the phone just isn't updated? And since the system update function just hangs, is there another way to push an update if there is one?

Did you try the market data clear?
I doubt there is a firmware update to fix this, the game is just screwed up. But yes my updater just sits there and "searches" for update non stop. Theres no other way to update, not on Verizon anyway.
OK, I cleared the market data, now it opens again.
Madden will not let me clear the app data, that option is greyed out.
I guess I'm just going to have to take it back to Verizon.
After a recent snafu in trying to remove root from my Nexus 7 tablet and installing the 4.3 update I think there are issues with with it's ability to keep a constant wireless connection, Juice Defender be damned as way before root and even during root I was able to maintain a flawless connection although I think the issue may have arisen during my installation of a cracked google play store app.
This was a couple months ago though.
However I decided rooting wasn't worth it and wanted to update to the new 4.3, this is where the snafu occurs, unrooting wasn't a problem at all, nor was flashing stock recovery, but the process of installing 4.3 was since even performing the update in my settings wasn't working, it would download and my tablet would restart and try to apply the update but soon after it would error out and I had to perform a hard shut down.
After that it would boot like normal and there were no issues, other than the update failing to apply.
So I decided to try and apply the update manually and as it turns out, I was attempting to install the update for the mobile version of the tablet instead of the wi-fi only one that I have so it didn't install correctly and simply erased all data on my tablet except luckily for the devices fastboot mode.
Seeing that I installed the correct 4.3 factory image and this is where the wi-fi issues come into play (I wanted to explain in as much detail as I could that might shed light on my current wi-fi situation).
The tablet booted up seemingly normally, taking a bit longer than it should have to me and upon getting to the glowing X before the main screen it suddenly reset it's self and then booted up correctly; so I finished the set up process after linking my wi-fi up but while going through each app that uses wi-fi I started off with games like Happy Street and The Sims Freeplay which worked normally.
Then I got go my Bank of America app and it's the one app (besides the Play Store on occasion), that didn't work at all, instead it just timed out, there's a screenshot so you can verify for yourselves.
You can clearly see I do have an established connection but this is the only app that fails to work after the update, again besides the Play Store but I've removed root and the crack is no longer installed, not that it would work anyway without root access but it doesn't concern me as much since it'll connect after force closing the app and starting it again.
So that's my issue in detail, is there something that I messed up that's preventing the device from maintaining a connection? Or do I simply need to re-install the factory image to restore connections?
Hmm...I've been having some trouble with WiFi as well.
I was running CM10 and then installed the 4.3 factory image over that. That's where the problem started. Since then I've tried the 4.2 factory image, Ubuntu Touch, and I'm now back on CM10, but the issue remains that my WiFi seems to stop working even though the icon in the notification bar says that it's connected.

Well the weird thing is, is that every other app seems to work but that one where it just times out, I'm going to try just re-installing the update and see if that helps things.
Edit: After backing everything up I decided to re-install the 4.3 update and after downloading the Bank of America app it started up instantly, froze for a moment and allowed me to sign in.
I closed out of the app and tried again to check and after 3 attempts to sign in it worked each time, I think the re-installation did the trick.

Was wondering if anyone has run into this problem?
The phone was fine, rooted and everything, for a month give or take. Then all of a sudden, today, it started acting weird.
It was fine in the morning and everything, was able to use wifi, check emails, and stuff.
Then BAM, I tried to make a call, it didn't go through for the first 20 seconds or so. Then connected and a message kept popping up saying Phone is stopped or something during and after the call.
So, I restarted the phone. It restarted fine and everything, got past the 2 Samsung screens. Then hit the T-Mobile screen. and has been stuck on the T-Mobile screen for ~30 minutes now and just keeps vibrating.
It's getting quite hot, both front and back.
Any advice? Stupid Samsung making this a closed system so can't pull out the battery.
Can't even turn the phone off, only able to get to Download screen.
Weird problem.
Is there any way to pull the data and stuff off the phone at this point?
I'm thinking of going the factory reset route and do that to see what happens and see if it will fix the problem. It would probably not retain root am I correct and I would have to re-root again?
I could get into download mode and recovery fine.
I have had this issue on both at&t and t-mobile firmwares, but only while rooted.
Best thing to do is to re-flash the stock firmware again(or go to a different firmware if you'd like) but this is the reason I'm currently avoiding root. It soft bricks about a month in and is an easy fix but its annoying.
Was wondering about that too (flashing the stock firmware). But, will it wipe everything I had on there? Will any of my txt msg's and photo's or summat be lost to the ether?
Stupid question, I know, but had to be asked.
Thinking about flashing stock firmware and rooting agin for the sake of being able to do it again lol.
Well, if you flash stock, it does factory reset. That's why I have backups lol all I have to do is log into my Google account and everything is there.

Hope this helps!
