I apologise if this is a stupid question, but I can't seem to make sense of it.
Looking at the features between different builds (as demonstrated nicely in this table http://www.simonwalkerphotos.com/android/android_build_information.asp I notice that the official T-Mobile and other builds seems to support AIM, MSN and Yahoo!
I'm using JFV1.51 CRB43 EU (1541), which seems to support MSN/AIM.
I can add MSN/AIM/Yahoo details to my contacts, but how do I then chat over it?
I get the feeling its got to come down to third party app support, but if it does, then why would some releases support it when others dont.
Could someone enlighten me, please
The ROMS that support IM built in use the T-Mobile IM app. To enable a chat from your contacts, (within cupcake) simply click on "chat using AIM/MSN etc." From there it should take you to the IM app and have you sign in or take you to a message window.
Hope that helps
Thanks for the swift reply.
OK, so:
I create a new contact, give them a name and enter a phone number.
I hit enter Chat Address and I get dropdown options for AIM, Windows Live, Yahoo, Skype, QQ, GoogleTalk, ICQ and Jabber.
I enter known GoogleTalk, AIM, MSN and ICQ Addresses. Hit done.
I now go and find my contact (mr aaaTest) and I have 6 options.
Call/Text
Chat using: Google Talk / AIM / Windows Live / ICQ
Chat using google talk promps me to invite the address set for the contact.
Slightly annoying as I already have that contact in gTalk, just under a different name, but it seems to be working.
Clicking on Chat Using AIM/Windows Live / ICQ does nothing.
Well, it responds to the button press, but nothing happens on the device.
If I have a look using logcat then on teh button press I'm told:
I/ActivityManager( 63): Starting activity: Intent { action=android.intent.action.SENDTO data=imto://msn/[email protected] }
E/ViewContact( 130): No activity found for intent: Intent { action=android.intent.action.SENDTO data=imto://msn/[email protected] }
So, as I am running JFV1.51 CRB43 EU, should I expect this to work?
The only thing I can think is that its a US only feature. -Can anyone advise please.
It may only be a US feature. I know it is featured to work with the IM application that comes on the T-Mobile US builds.
I'm not sure about the EU versions, as I have never used them. You could try pushing the IM app and other files needed from the JF US version and see if that works, assuming the IM app will work on the EU build.
I believe this is a feature made available in the US by the use of a SMS->IM gateway, which most other operators in the UK/EU don't do. Mainly because it's a horrid way to do things

what he said - but if you do want it working, this may work:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=519980
Thanks for all the replies.
Using a SMS gateway is abhorent and well worth avoiding.
Thank you Joinc for the warning and afflaq for telling me how to do it. I probably won't bother setting it up, but it could be amusing to try.
I suppose if I want to be using these protocalls then I'm going to have to download third party apps for each. I wonder if a) they work nicely and b) tie in nicely to contacts.
gTalk in the browser chaims that I can contact people with AIM accounts -I might have a play with this and see if it will work on the phone.
Thanks to all for your help -as a long term lurker, I'm really impressed by the friendly and helpful replies to my first post

Does it include Yahoo! Messenger? Also, does it take all your Yahoo! friends and add them to your phone's contacts? What does it include?
As you can tell, I tried 2.0 a while ago -- and it took me 3 days after uninstallation to get my phone back to the original state. LOL....
Just to let you know Version 3 is still in BETA.
Ok... Just spent an hour toying with it and uninstalled after it crashed multiple times while pulling up emails, and then later, traffic. Too bad, cuz it looks like Yahoo! is making gains on a service that Microsoft has dominated for a while now (Live and Live Search). To answer my earlier questions for anyone who's interested, no, it doesn't pull in all your friends into your phone's contacts... and it has everything it shows on the Yahoo! Go website -- which of course does NOT include messenger or GPS-aided maps/turn-by-turn directions.
I do see some nice improvements from v2.0 in the user interface -- real nice animated carousel for selecting which widget you want to use. If you have multiple Yahoo! accounts, though, you will have to uninstall and reinstall anytime you want to change IDs. That sucked. Also, as I stated before, the maps and directions function cannot utilize GPS. Email doesn't show HTML/pictures. And again, there is NO messenger built in (HUGE bummer -- I'll keep using free Slick Messenger).
So, for those who must use Yahoo! for whatever reason, this will be a nice step in the right direction. Otherwise, folks like myself will most likely continue using Microsoft Live and Live Search (gotta luv that speech recognition!)

Contact sync removed
It appears that Yahoo! Go 3 beta no longer includes a contact sync feature. That was one feature that came in handy with v2. Bummer.

Not true! I had no trouble logging into my flckr account.
Hi,
I have installed Skype 2.2 for Windows Mobile Professional (Pocket PC) on my Telus Diamond.
I don't use Skype for VoIP, I use it for the messaging. My gripe with this Skype is it puts a tag line that says something on how I'm using Skype without a PC and on a mobile with a "Learn More" link. I don't like that tagline. I can't even seem to change it. For example, my Skype is logged in at my work PC, and I want to log in from my phone as well.
I want the tagline to show as the one that's on my PC's Skype.
The other issue with this is, it doesn't go away on idle or anything like that. And as you can see, the Skype provided to Mobile users is very stripped down to a basic IM client.
No auto away on idle of 5 mins, no chat window being opened or sound or vibe or any notification when IM'd (The only way you know you got messages is when you open your Skype client, you'll see your tab "Chats" highlighted, the stupid tag line.
Hence, I'm looking for an alternative client that might be available for WinMo6.1 that allows all of what I'm looking for.
Any help would be appreciated.

Does it provide IM for Skype you think?
I'll give it a try.
Installed it, tested it, removed it.
It plasters the tagline, and every message sent on Skype also has a signature. Agh!
Thanks for pointing me to it though, appreciate it.
Hi !
I won't go into too much details, but the thing is that gtalk is a xmpp service, so you can connect using "PSI" and after login you can use "service discovery" and add an IM transport from another server to your rooster (good list of servers here: http://www.jabberes.org/servers/) and then the contacts from that transport appear in gtalk. The status updates are not instant, but it's ok - less trafiic and less battery consumption. But the messages come in instantly, just the status is less often updated.
Please do this with a test account first, and DON'T DELETE CONTACTS BEFORE DELETING THE TRANSPORT FROM ROOSTER.
PS: i never got disconnected since i did this, unlike the im apps in market.
Good luck !
I'm bumping this, because i have the impression people don't get it: you can chat with yahoo, aim, msn, etc... with the built in chat client - uses data, not sms, and it's the most reliable (never crashes or gets disconnected), uses little data and has no impact on performance. WIN - WIN.
The problem with this in my experience is reliability, even with my own jabber server the transports didn't seem 100% stable :/
How exactly do you add in the information to perform this?
i'll have to say google for more details, but this is the procedure:
Those are the steps:
1. connect to gtalk with psi (this you need to google first, then if it doesn't work use another port - 443 i think worked for me)
2. open http://www.jabberes.org/servers/ in a browser to have it handy
3. in psi menu use service discovery and enter a server from the page above (choose a free server)
4. double click a transport in the window that appears, and enter username & pasword for the corresponding im network (this is called registering)
5. in psi accept all friends requests
6. rename the contacts you see in psi - they will show up on the phone renamed
again: do this with a test account (not a google test account, a yahoo/msn/etc test account) first, and don't delete yahoo/msn/etc friends before deleting the transport - i did it and had to add my yahoo contacts again.
@nurre: i didn't have any problems yet... except when a transport went down, and i chose another server with another transport - going smooth for about a week
I'd be interested in trying this out, but I don't have enough time in the day to google around about PSI and figure out how to set it up. I'd love an actual step-by-step, though. Not that you're in any way obligated, of course; I'm just saying that I'd be much obliged.

Then you don't need this badly enough. The step by step is right there FFS (you want it click by click ?)
for step 1: http://psi-im.org/wiki/Google_Talk_HowTo_for_Psi_0.12 if it doesn't work, use port 443
If you might explain what you are talking about exactly, so that I decide whether I have to struggle even more to find relevant info ?
( and I could not access the link http://www.jabberes.org/servers/ )
As far as I could find out, PSI is a im client (jabber and others) ? On the PC ?
So is your solution to have it running on a PC, so that it relays msn and others to Gtalk ? That means it only works if it is up and running on the PC ?

the title says what you can acomplish, and the first two posts present the advantages of doing this.
the http://www.jabberes.org/servers/ seems to be down, check it again later. meanwhile you can see free servers here: http://xmpp.org/services/
PSI is only used to add other im networks to your gtalk account. it's used for configuration and rename purposes only. It doesn't have to run to have this working.
And another advantage: if you're near a pc and you sense a long chat coming, you can connect to your gmail account using PSI (or use the online client at www.meebo.com) and you're logged in in two places at once (PC and G1). you receive messages in both places, but reply from the PC.
And another one: log in at gmail and you have all your conversations saved (including yahoo/msn/aim/etc)
Trust me, it's worth it ! No other chat client is as reliable as the built in one. My status is "Mobile 24/7 on android".

I edited the title to reflect the msn issue. I have no idea how this could be fixed. Maybe add a transport for jabber (if such thing exists) and that would have a msn transport - like another layer in the middle. I don't know if this is possible, i'm just saying (someone who knows better might call bulls&^t).
A new issue is opened..

When I register my AIM screenname, it doesn't shows system messages...
Solution?
Ok, got it to work for adding conztacts.
All my contacts appear in PSI, but not in GTalk.
I added 2 accounts to PSI.
#1: The GTalk-account
#2: An account of a server with icqtransport (like aim) (there registered with it and registered the icq transport)
Please help!
when I try to discover the service with manually typing jaim.at in the place where gmail.com is (e.g. jaim.at) withouth adding this server and gtalk (so only gtalk) it displays the ICQ Transport at jaim.at , when I register it says succesful, but none of my contacts appear.
Does anyone know of a free app that will do exchange corporate directory lookup? If these phones ever hope to gain ground in the corporate world they really need to have this functionality out of the box and built into the exchange app on the phone (i.e. being able to do a "check name" against the GAL). I've searched the marketplace but can't find one for 1.5. There is an app for the DROID that does this but it is either specifically written for the motorola phone, or only supports android 2.0 (doesn't show up as a search result unless it is done using the DROID). This is my biggest beef with this phone and i'm thinking of sending it back and just waiting for them to be released with 2.0 already loaded.
I know there are some paid programs out there that claim to offer this functionality but of course i'd prefer to explore the free route first. Thanks!
There is a beta program from Seven (also known as Good Messaging) that does what you are asking for at no cost (aside from testing new features).
http://www.seven.com
I've been using it off and on for a couple of years now. It perpetually has bugs (it's their beta build), but it works.
It supports direct connect from your phone via Exchange OWA, or you can install a connector on your PC at work which integrates with outlook to sync over the air with your phone (useful if your company only exposes exchange internally or via vpn).
How can I use this app from Seven? The link to Sprint links to other phones and not any of the newer smartphones...
*update*
Nevermind, I got it. Have to sign up for their forums and beta program. Installing now. Looks very professional. Let's hope it works well.
Finally I can answer a question for someone else. The Sprint Hero has a GAL built it. Unfortunately you have to be in an email to run it, but you can do a GAL from there. Let me know if you need help. No need to get an app, its already there.
When in an email, in the to box, type the name and a drop down will be there and select Company Directory
What about on the HTC Eris from Verizon? It does not have this drop down for corporate directory option.... Maybe I'll try that seven program.

I feel like a moron here, but I am not seeing this, I can start to type a name and I only get my list of contacts in the phone. This is not a GAL list. Would be OOBER cool if I can get this working, and figure out how to delete and email ONLY off the phone not the server too.

If i get you, you want something like whatsapp...
As far as i know, you will need different things:
A backend Server to manage and store users and manage files sended.
A client side with is the chat. If you doing it in Android, Java the process could be like this:
client get a list of friends, then stores in local files. To send a message, firstly can use push messages like GCM to send a message, if receiver is online with the conversation openned, it tries to stablish a socket connection to send messages each other. If no, then it uses the push GCM.
More or less like that....of course there are much more things to do and take care of.
hope i helped you a little with this info!

the point where i am stuck is that
How to connect the app to server ??
and how to give a user his personal pin or username so he can share with others to chat ??
