Faulty Power Button. Phone can't turn off. (Resolved). - Touch HD General

My phone all of a sudden wont turn off. It all works fine just the power button does not work anymore. I can't turn off the screen by pressing the button once and I can't turn off the phone by holding the button down. If I take the battery out and then put it in the phone automatically boots up so it sounds like the button is stuck in the "on" position.
So now I have to leave the phone in gsm mode with, screen brightness low and auto screen turn off set to off because if the screen goes off i can't turn it on again. What a pain.
I did notice a droplet of water by the speaker when i removed the back cover but God knows how it got in there.
Anything I can do? Bought the phone second hand. Will HTC repair it?

you can use this so that all of your buttons will work to wake up your phone: http://www.fuzemobility.com/wake-up-your-fuze-without-the-power-key/
That fixes half of your problem
The other possibility is testing what a long press does- if you do a long press of power does it prompt you with a warning that it is going to turn off? If so you can remap a long press of the power button to an app that will turn off the screen.
PM me if you need help as I may not see your response here.

Thank you so much! I could kiss you

If the screen goes off removing the sylus brings it back to life if thats any help

i was just about to say, removing the stylus turns the screen on, well it does on my dads and soon to be (tomorrow) mine.

Yes I now remove the stylus to turn on my phone. Now I need another way to turn off the screen with out of course using the power button. Any ideas. At the moment I am using a long process of the action screen, shutdown, then turn of screen prcedure. There must be a quicker way or a single button press.

Can't remember if AE Button Plus has an option to assign any key to turn phone to standby/screen off.

I have a similar prob, the light on my power switch stopped working, and another weird thing is that remove the stylus doesn't perform wakeup. Any ideas?

Roadrunner100, HD comes with 2 styli. Did U try the second one?

tboy2000, try blowing over the power switch crevices with blower of a vacuum cleaner or a air compressor (in case of compressor U should be sure that it does not spit out any oil drops).

Thanks,
Actually tried both styli, what worked was the advice you gave tboy2000, blowing over the orifice, amazing how much pocket fluff got in there...

I tried blowing and using a hairdryer. No luck so far. Will try vacum cleaner next.
Maybe I need to take it apart and take out the button and replace it after cleaning around it. Is this advisable? Is there a manual of how to take it apart?

If you are still having difficulties using power button you can always use the following little app TouchOff
Copy the english files to location you saved app. i.e. if you saved app to storage card (recommended) copy files within folder to Storage Card > Program Files > Touch Off > Skins > DefaultVGA and replace files in that folder

That's just too weak for it. Need a powerful jet of air.. It has to go through those small crevices. Also hold your HD firmly and over a soft surface to avoid damage due to an accidental fall.

If U don't mind voiding warranty you can use the manual to open it. I don't know a way of removing those 'void' tabs non destructively.. For the usual tamper proof stickers hairdryer does a good job to remove it intact easily.

Well I tried a vacum cleaner to no joy. It still does not want to turn off. Permantly stuck on ON position so it does work but not properly.
I use AE Button manager to map the volume button to turn on and off the screen. Will look at manual and see if it is something I want to consider.
Thanks for all the info and help. I have contributed two wiki entries for the Blackstone so it is nice to get some help back.
Any more ideas always welcome to fix this power button.

tboy2000 Is it the button or the lever over the button that is stuck?

See the pic. You can separate the lever from the underlying button if lever is moving. Then this will solve your problem. If not then the button is stuck. You can try using the corner of a firm then plastic sheet to try free it. lastly opening is your only option.
BTW did U try blowing after the lever is lifted (be gentle with lifting it ).

From retentions I got a pretty good deal,
I had to pay £150 up front but then I was given £150 call credit...
£15/mnth contract.
I'm happy.

crajee: bless you for really trying to help me. Greatly appreciated! Really.
I tried lifting the button up. I did. Blew under it. Still no joy.
Occaisonally after say 30 seconds of holding the power button down, I do get the notification window (do you want to turn off your device). But it does not happen after 3 seconds as it should. Even though that occaisonally happens, it still does not turn the screen off. I am now starting to think the droplet of water under the cover near the speaker has something to do with it. God knows how it got under the cover if the cover was on.

I don't know what happened but tonight my power button suddenly works fine now. Happened all by itself. Must be when I lifted up the button and blew earlier today. So thanks Crajee, if it weren't for you I would never know you could lift up the button as shown in the photo above. Thanks! Thanks! Thanks!

tboy2000, Really glad to know your HD is back in full speed
BTW you can add resolved tag to the title of the thread as it can help others looking for similar problem.

Easy way to turn off the phone?

Is there an easy way to turn off the phone? Only way I figured out so far, is by tapping on the GSM icon on the top, and then selecting flight mode. This is really cumbersome compared to a regular phone where you just press the power button. There has to be an easier way..?
Hold the power button down? That will turn off the whole device. As for turning off just the GSM radio... I think the way you mentioned is the only way.
thx.. that was easy.. coming from regular phones, a lot of things work differently now -- slowly getting a grip on them.

It does seem a bit silly that the Communications Manager doesn't let you control the GSM radio as well as WiFi/Bluetooth/Audio.
If you have voice command, simply press your designated button and say "flight mode on"
I guess when holding the power button 5 secs to turn it off completely, alarms and reminders also won't work (haven't tried that yet, though)? So what I would actually want to do over the night is just turn off the gsm phone, but leave the pda part running.. So the easiest way to use flight mode is the best...
I hit the button on my Bluetooth Headset and said "flight mode on", but now when I hit the button on my headset I don't get the voice command prompt.....

The QTEK 9100 Comm Manager does have a button to turn on/off the GSM radio and is what I use all the time. I don't know why the K-JAM has a worthless volume on/off option when all you have to do is hold down the Comm Manager button to toggle this function. Maybe someone can figure out a way to get the 9100 Comm Manager on the K-JAM.
No, the Qtek comm manager doesnt. From top to bottom it has:
Wifi
Bluetooth
Sound/vibrate
Activesync
That is all.

Try out pocketzenphone.
It is very cheap and works on every platform, wm5.0 included. If you use the tray version and assign it to a HW butto you can turn your phone off simply pushing that button.

Hurry up downloading the beta release as it is time limited to october 30th and the developer is releasing it, so the beta will be removed.

Dang, the preproduction QTEK 9100 I have does have it in the Comm Manager. I just got the production 9100 I ordered and it has the Comm Manager like the K-JAM.
What does someone here need to hack this and get the preproduction Comm Manager working on the 9100 and K-JAM for us?
Probably nothing more than the .exe file from the pre-production unit! Upload to the forums!

Hello Robinton,
How could you use Voice Command from your BT Headset ?
For me, it doesn't work ! I always need to press button on the device.
I used BeyondTheTech's instructions for installing voice command on the K-Jam (Don't forget to do the registry change, that's what let's you use the headset button) Instructions are near the bottom of his blog, but don't forget to read the rest as this guy has some great advice and has done an excelent job of rounding up the 'must know' stuff.

Note that for the voicecommand to work your device has to be in the 'on' state (At least that has been my experience )
Guys.... a screen shot of the Comm manager on the Jasjar.... I knew I'd seen it some where recently....

Vibrate when in pocket

The vibrator in HD2 is so strong, that i prefer to not use it. HTC has this neat setting, to increase the ringing volume when the phone is in pocket/bag mode. But it would be great if it also turned on the vibrator when in this mode?
I don't know, I'm not a developer, but to me it does seem like a usefull function, and it might not be to hard to tweak?

You can configure under sound and notifications to:
1. Vibrate and ring
2. Vibrate then ring
So not sure what tweak you are looking for.

The thing i'm wondering about, is the ability that the phone only vibrates when in pocket mode, not when its on a table

But you can just turn on and off the vibration. Make a kind of shortcut for this.

sure but since there's a setting to make ringones louder when in a pocket, it would be nice with vibr. as well. really jest need vibr. when the phone is in my pocket annyway
I also think that vibrate in pocket mode would be a nice feature...
I agree that the function is needed - the only time I want it to vibrate is when its in my pocket. Would also be good to have other pocket mode functions such as buttons being disabled.

Good suggestion - i've used s2u2 for the last year on my TyTN II and think it's a great program. Still doesn't get round the issue of pocket mode vibration.
guys my Leo DOES vibrate when in pocket mode! It did from day 1 thats what pocket mode is supposed to do.. loud ringtone + vibration..
i've noticed though that sometimes it doesnt always detect the "pocket mode" for me, i know when its ringing in pocket mode, because it doesnt quiet the ringtone upon movement (which is also right coz if it did while u were walking then u might never know about that call u just recieved)
You're absolutely right! It does vibrate in pocket mode - HTC have thought about it all!! Does the screen have to be facing you to activate pocket mode? I presume it's the proximity sensor that detects it..maybe with a mix of ambient light sensor?

i thought the same but if that was the case shouldnt it detect pocket mode when inside htc's leather pouch?? coz mine doesnt! it only detects pocket mode when its actually in a pocket although its pouch in a way creates the same environment... i know the phone cant be THAT clever! so i pressume that sometimes even if the slightest of light is captured by the light sensor makes the phone go off the pocket mode...
Hmm, after some testing, yes i't does vibrate, it didnt before, but i've updated to the official 1.48 ROM.
On my phone it vibrates when the gsensor detects movements before it rings, so it doesn't have anything to do with lightning (on my phone)
now, if i only could use the HD2 to send SMS messages (witch is often stuck in the outbox) i could put away my Nokia phone, and only use HD2
I haven't updated the ROM - I'm on 1.43 and pocket mode vibrates. I've also found that if I cover the light/proximity sensor when the phone is called it will activate pocket mode even when the phone is still.
Surely there must be some documentation on how this thing works!

yea i think there been lots of times that it ringed when it was in my pocket while sitting (still) or when in its pouch (still)
but like lukedom said, if u dont have any documentation saying exactly how it works and what triggers the behavior, u can only assume stuff...
I've been trying myself to understand how pocket mode works.
I have 1.48 ROM ITA. On pocket mode it usually rings and vibrate, but sometimes it does not.
I think it detects the pocket with the proximity sensor, because covering it with a finger does the job.
G-sensor also plays a role: if I put the phone in a still bag it gets louder but does not vibrate, but if I put it in the pocket of my jeans it vibrates and gets louder.
Not sure if the light sensor has a role because the lightning of the display should influence it.
Note that if you put the phone on silent mode, it just vibrates when in the jeans and does nothing in a still bag...
Pocket Mode SMS Vibrate
Is there any way to set the phone so that it will Vibrate & Play a Tone when receiving a Text Message in Pocket Mode BUT when not in a pocket, will only Play the Incomming SMS Message Tone and NOT Vibrate?

[Temporary] fix for the nexus one power button that's difficult to press.

Note:
this fix is meant for units with a working power button however is difficult to press. this will not make a non-working power button come back to life.
this involves cutting a rectangular piece of paper and sandwiching it inside the phone -- between the gap made by the power button and the nexus one case. my hunch is this helps the button move in the "correct" path and trigger the button switch below.
the solution is shown in three pictures. just replace the x in httx with p. the images are hosted in my picasa web.
step 1:

1. cut a rectangular piece of paper with one dimension a little small than the length of the power button.
2. remove the back cover of the nexus one
3. slip in the paper into the rear gap between the power button and the case. you can see this we'll in the photos
4. make sure the paper is big enough so that a part of it protrudes over the exposed part of the power button.
5. the paper should slip in nicely.
6. but the cover back.
you'll see it better in the picture.
Nice photos.

Warranty Replacement!
thanks for noting the photos.
I wish i can get a my phone replaced -- or even repaired by HTC but sadly i live in a country where the nexus one isn't officially released.

Dont hold your breath izmar. Not much of a solution I am afraid. My N1 is a warranty repaired unit, due to a malfunctioning power button 3 months back. Two months down the track the power button on the repaired phone is playing up and in need of warranty replacement again Once 12 months is up for me next March I am up sh1tters ditch
Whats the go with warranty, when the same problem recurs. Any chance of a refund? (I doubt it). I really love my N1 but I dread the thought of the power button stuffing up every two or three months when out of warranty and never being totally fixable.
I dont want to root to get wake on trackball. I reckon Google should consider releasing a stock froyo build, with wake on trackball capability for the N1, to give users a way forward when warranties expire.

I'm glad you brought that up, because that reminds me, I asked the HTC rep the same question. I basically said, "Hey, what if this same problem happens AGAIN for a second time, and my warranty is expired?" He told me that I "sound like a pretty articulate person" and that I could probably argue my case if it were to happen again, and if they didn't replace it, they might cut me a deal on repair costs.
The first rep I spoke with a few days earlier told me that the chances of getting a new nexus (with an alleged foam piece now being inserted in the manufacturing process to prevent the power button problem) are very high.
I've had my Nexus for a few days now and the power button is great. Though I do sense a little more of a purple tint than my last phone.
My phone was also rooted and they didn't ask me whether or not I had unlocked it. I've seen several testimonies on here explaining they will replace an item if it's an obvious hardware failure (in my case a VERY obvious one).
And to Bossjerix -- Are you sure Google wont replace your nexus even if it's under warranty? Maybe you can pay some extra shipping costs?

Indeed is does provide wake on trackball without root. Wow Thats nice to know. Did not think it possible without root til now.
But I would prefer to stick to the stock interface. So would be great if someone could come up with a utility to do as lockgo does & wake on trackball with a stock froyo rom. But definately dont want all the rest of the interface. Just the one feature. I could then live happily without the power button.

Ah so I see. There are indeed several lock screen tools that add this. Have WidgetLocker installed now in fact. Trouble is they are really lock/homescreen/interface replacements. None of which I actually need. Further I need to be able to lock the screen and turn it off again preferably by some hard button sequence as a substitute for the power button. Widget Locker and Lockgo seem to only do trackball wake and not the reverse. Lock Screen Widget will allow me lock the screen with a icon tap but it interferes with the other utilities.
I'd love something that simply gave trackball wake and the reverse being sleep/screen off with long trackball press.
I use LockEnabler to sleep the screen, CMs trackball wake (built in ROM), and Quick Boot to reboot, access recovery, etc...
Figure this thing is gonna give out one day, so I may as well be prepared!

Good one. Thanks for that. I also found lock now free which does the same as lock screen widget with few added bells and whistles. Lets you place it in the notification bar so you can switch off from anywhere.
Nolock disengages the lock screen altogether. Any key will wake. But as far as lockgo, is it that hard to click the ball and slide. Your finger to the menu key?

I'm using Lock screen widget to power off screen and Trackball Wake to power on. The less I use my power button the better!

You need root for Trackball wake though, don't you?
Another worthy tool for those of us who have a dodgy power button AND fly a lot is "Airplane Mode Widget".
I have been getting about a 80% strike rate with WidgetLocker successfully waking my non-rooted N1 via trackball. Other 20% I have to revert to using the power button. There seems to be no obvious reason why it will wake on one occasion via trackball and not the next. Any one else get find trackball waking does not always work?
Yes, you need root, sorry...
Regarding trackball wake, there is a 6 second lag between going to sleep and being able to be woken. Maybe that's what you're seeing?

Nah I dont think it is the 5 sec rule or whatever they call it. Because I can let the N1 screen timeout, then pick it up, seconds minutes or hours later and I have the same problem. No trackball wake. But them on the next occasion all it fine. Weird.
Yeah, sounds weird... hope the trackball isn't next to start bugging out...

Random Vibrations

My Exynos unit vibrates seemingly at random when I pick it up after it's been on the desk a short while. Anyone else experiencing this? I'm guessing it could be the phone signalling it's coming out of Doze mode, or is that just wishful thinking and there is something wrong with my phone?
This is a feature of the phone. If you have a notification, the phone will vibrate when you pick it up to let you know that you have a message. I believe it can be turned off in the settings, but I'm not sure. Of course if it's vibrating without any notifications, then there could be a problem. Btw, I have the snapdragon not the exynos but I think it's the same.
The phone has a setting in which it vibrates when you pick it up if there are unattended notifications. You probably have that enabled (not sure where I saw it in settings, but I did).
This is a feature called smart alert. It will vibrate as you're picking it up if you have missed calls or messages.
You can turn it off in Settings > Advanced features > Smart Alert

Thanks. Hmm, not sure if I like this feature. Will leave it on for now though. I like to experience my phone as the OEM intended for the first couple of weeks.
Ahhh, so that's why! That's always bugged me, thinking that something had crashed when I picked it up and a sensor was busted or something.
For me it was under settings > motions and gestures.

Try notification reminder under settings
Not sure about you guys, but mine does this when there are zero notifications. Sometimes it'll do it multiple times in a row. I've tried everything, but still it happens. My buddy has the S7 and it does the same. If it's the Motion Gesture option, then it's faulty.

No Notification Vibration
I'm having a problem where my S7 vibrates for no reason at all. I will be browsing the web, texting, checking email, etc. and the phone will vibrate like I received a notification. However, when I check, there are no notifications at all. This happens a few times a day.
It's not the notification reminder nor motion gesture as I have both of those turned off. Any ideas?
I have the same problem, my phone vibrates all the damn time like 10 times an hour while I'm holding it for long periods of time I turned of smart alert there's nothing wrong with the battery charge or the wifi there are no notifications I cannot figure it out and it's really really annoying
My phone vibrates when the screen is off and I flip it upside down. Then it makes the google now sound when I flip it back but doesn't do anything.
i found what it is,
settings -> accessibility -> Notification Reminder... somehow this was turned on by an app or something i dunno.
Turning this off solved the annoying "notification reminder"
It is listed under the notification reminder. Go to settings > search > look up "notification reminder." Under "Notification Settings", turn off vibrate.
For s8 to stop f#**ing buzzing
Tried turning off smart alert... Tried messing with google now because of its notifications... Tried turning off vibration... Tried turning off notifications all together and it still buzzed. It was getting me pissed. Couldnt figure it out. Then I turned off dual audio mode and the phantom vibrations stopped. Settings>bluetooth>3 dots on top right>dual audio>off. I think it has to do with the Bluetooth searching and dropping signals which gives the phantom buzz. Also murderous on the battery in my experience. But that worked for me. Dual audio is a cool feature, but I guess not one that can be left on.

Same problem here with my S8+. Unfortunately turning dual audio off did not fix the problem for me. https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8+/help/random-notification-sounds-vibration-t3605007

Ok so I actually did something else too and didn't notice it when i originally posted. I did go to settings>accessibility>notification reminders. I've set it to off since but when I originally posted on this thread I had set up the applications I wanted reminders from individually so i didn't notice immediately that the buzz was still there until I got a notification from one of the apps I selected for this function and it did it again. This setting seems to not affect notifications in general, but it gives reminders of notifications at preselected intervals. So you get the initial alert, but with this setting set to be on, you get reminder alerts of your notifications as well in the form of that dreaded buzz. I think it could be helpful for those who want to make sure they can respond to every notification, but for the average user it is just annoying. I've set notification reminders to off and the buzzing is no more. As far as the dual audio, I was also experiencing a crazy power drain from that when I had it activated. I'm assuming that it is because of all the crap I have thats Bluetooth in my house trying to pick up my phone. When I changed this setting to off the power drain stopped so for users of this function I'd recommend only activating it when you are using it or bringing an extra charging method with you.

Disable Vibration at Power Off?

Hello,
how can I disable the vibration when the tablet shuts down?
Its always irritating for me at night getting scared by this buzzing sound.
I've muted the tablet already but the vibration is still there. I Could not find a hint in the manual
and the samsung forum mods did not answer.
Which tablet so you have? This sub forum is for Tab S5e & Tab S5e doesn't have vibrate.

I reread the original post. That doesn't turn vibration off for shutdown. As far as I know there is no way to turn off vibration at shutdown. You can only turn off vibration when it is on.
Sorry.

Just saw your answers. Thank you very much for your research and efforts.
Yes , I own Galaxy Tab S5e LTE. If I've known this before I had not purchased the LTE version.
What is the use off an extreme loud vibration at power off?
Unfortunately there seems to exist no hack to keep the tablet silent.
Maybe I can convince amazon to exchange the tablet for the WiFi Version.
Here is another vibration victim from last year:

Before you do that. I want to clarify something.
When you say, "shut down." Do you mean powering off or going into standby mode?
I think you may be confusing terms.
When powering the device on or off it will vibrate briefly and you cannot turn off the vibration. Even for the WiFi only variant.
If you are talking about standby mode, where the display turns off, then yes you can turn off vibrate like I originally said so it won't vibrate everytime you get a message or notified.

I mean "Power Off" in the sense of completely shut down not standby.
And I've disabled every single notification and vibe I've found in the settings.
So this is obviously a feature though senseless in my view. Especially in quiet situations like lying in bed which is my preferred tablet use.
So I'll keep my LTE version and hope to get used to it one day.
Maybe there will be a hack sometime.
As a workaround like you've written - if standby works without vibration - I'll will try standby instead of Power Off..

Ok. I just wanted to make sure we were both talking about the same thing. My Note 10+ vibrates at power on and off as well. But not when it goes into standby/sleep mode.
I usually keep mine turned on with sound and vibration off. When I close the lid, it goes into standby/sleep mode and doesn't vibrate or make a sound. I put it on the charger at night so I don't have to worry about the battery.
I think I'll tolerate the buzzing partially because maybe in the long run the battery will get worse sooner if always on "standby". Closing the lid works the same with my tab.
