i've formatted my stock sd card to 700mb on ext2 and the rest on fat32. and i've tried using haykuros instructions to move my apps to sd and used the apps-to-sd app. but im not sure if my apps are on my sd? how would i know if they are.. and how would i check?
Pretty easy! Go into settings and chek up on the sd storage amount left, now notice the phones memory, and see how much room is left on that one! If its 65+ im pretty sure you transfered your data!
Then if your into terminal and this kind of os, you could verify by going to /system/sd/ and see the folders, go into them and verify that there are in fact applications in these folders, should prob be more than just one folder btw!
Just install a big app, and see if there's any changes in ur phone storage.
I was interested in seeing this but in terminal I keep getting permission denied. What exactly are you typing?? Thanks

Well! Using the command su before trying to go to sd usually fixes that issue
cd /data
ls -l
and if it says "app -> /system/sd/app" then it worked. It should also say "app-private -> /system/sd/app-private"
take out ur sd card, and go to an app, ur phone should freeze, then u gotta take out the battery to reboot it

There shouldn't be a '$', it should be a '#'. Make sure you're running what he said as root(before what he said type "su" and press enter)
ha i figured it out. I thought it said "is" and "-|" but it's actually " Ls" and "-L" (lowercase)
how embarassing

is that bad? how do i fix that?
i used haykuros symlinks setup :/
nevermind i fixed it.. hopefully its working
one question.. what if i flash a theme onto my phone... is that bad?
UPDATE: ok so it says app-private -> blah blah
and it says app -> blah blah
and when i run an app and take out sd card phone freezes..
why is my internal memory still going down? its 48 now
did you move the caches over to sd card also? maps, market, browser etc... if not then maybe thats y
ok i moved the dalvik-cache too but not the data folder.. everything is good now thanks for everything guys.. but i have one more question..
will it be alright if i flash a theme on it? the aero theme?
I was using JF v1.5 ADP and flashed the Aero theme and it worked fine, don't know if your using Haykuro's. I would do a nandroid backup.

Im using the unionfs method and when I issue those commands into the terminal it doesn't say what you guys said it should say, is this due to it not using symlinks?
I know they've been installing on the SD card, however I've upgraded my ROM a few times since I did unionfs without wiping, the apps are still storing on my SD correct?
I flashed Evil Eris 3.0 couple days ago and could out get the A2SD function to working so I decided that I want to go back to a previous version where A2SD works. When I reboot into recovery menu, I found that everything else works fine with the trackball except the downward direction. That really pissed me off because no matter how hard I try to scroll it down, it does not work. Now the recovery menu does not work for me anymore except the reboot function. It seems that it is the problem with trackball itself because when I reboot it into the system the downward direction still does not work. Anyway, I am thinking about flashing the ROM with terminal commands. Anyone who can help me with this? I'm using recovery image 1.6.2. Whats the command line for wiping the four things(I am not even sure if there is four or five because I cannot get into it! aaahhh) under the wipe function? For partitioning SD card? For upgrading from ext 2 to ext 3(if i remember this function right)? And finally whats the command line for flashing a ROM from SD card? Thanks!!!! Now I really wish that I had the Droid cuz theres a physical D-pad on it!
This will solve your issue:

Don't forget that when Amon_RA recovery is booted up, "adbd" is running on the phone.
That means that you can get your restore operations done by using ADB on the PC, and the
/sbin/nandroid-mobile.sh
script in Amon_RA to perform all the operations that you would have with the menu system.
do a /sbin/nandroid-mobile.sh --help
with Amon_RA recovery booted, and have a look at the
--listbackup
--subname
--restore
options for more information.
Obviously, this won't fix your trackball. But it does give you access to restore and backup operations in the meantime.

I am a newbie with terminal and command lines, so I hope you don't mind if I ask some questions here. I checked the help list of nandroid-mobile script, but I think all the functions are to do with nandroid backup file? it is either to back up or to restore a backup file? I have successfully backed up though. But how do I wipe my dalvik cache and other misc. stuff in the recovery menu? How do I partition my sdcard using the script? and flash an img?
My trackball went out on me the other night when I was working on it. Or so I thought. Just before I called Verizon to send me a replacement, I tried one last ditch effort. I used my tshirt to wipe whatever was on the ball and pressed it kind of hard when moving the trackball around and what do you know, it fixed it. I only use my trackball for when flashing, which is a lot. So hopefully this might help you.

That script only does a couple things in addition to nandroid backup and restores - it is not a replacement for the Amon_RA menu.
Your original post indicated that you were trying to restore a previously saved ROM backup, so that I why I suggested it.
Obviously, it would be better if you got your trackball fixed.
As far as wipes go, here is what happens during a wipe:
Code:
mount /system
cd /system
rm -rf /system/* >>/dev/null 2>&1
cd /
umount /system
mount /data
cd /data
rm -rf /data/* >>/dev/null 2>&1
cd /
umount /data
Since - as you said - you are a newcomer to command lines, you probably shouldn't be doing the above. In particular, the "rm" commands above are extremely dangerous if you don't know what you are doing (although I tried to minimize the danger with the superfluous-looking "cd" commands.
If you would like to learn more about using the command line, or scripting, just pull that file to your PC
adb pull /sbin/nandroid-mobile.sh nandroid-mobile.sh
and study it intently (shell scripts are plain text files). You will learn a lot about what goes on "under the hood" that way.
cheers

I'm in the same boat as the original poster. Just need the code to push a stock or closer to stock ROM so I can return to Verizon.

thanks so much! I think I will replace my trackball just for safety. I don't want to temper with the command line that I have no idea of yet! I will certainly look into the shell script later. Also, if I want to learn more basic stuff with the terminal language, what should I do? is there any wikis or websites or even books teaching the language? I am intrigued by all these custom ROMs available for android system and I would love to learn how to build one on my own!
WOW, that is awesome! I never thought that I would be able to do that but this looks so simple!
I tried to push it really hard but nothing changed. I start to wonder if this is a common problem seen in Eris owners? I just couldn't imagine why the trackball will be senseless. Thanks for your tip though!
I had my Epic in my pocket with the display asleep, and I wanted to check the time. When I pulled out the phone I noticed that the bottom row of buttons was lit for some reason, and the power button didn't appear to be doing anything. After waiting for a few seconds to see if anything would happen I finally gave up and pulled the battery.
The phone rebooted fine, but after reboot it started telling me that the internal memory was low. Since then I've deleted some applications, cleared my text history, etc....but it still gives me the warning. It claims that I now have 16 megs free....but I don't know how that's possible as I don't have that many apps installed (I'm guessing around 100-150megs).
Do the Sprint built in apps really use that much space? Is there a way for me to see the physical files that are on that chip rather than just a list of installed applications? I'm thinking it might be an app writing a bunch to internal memory...but I don't know how to determine that (new to Android).
Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. I'd be fine if it just wasn't letting me install anything (like the Pre used to)....but the fact that it's rejecting my text messages is a major issue.
I uninstalled Google Earth for now and it's now at 36 megs free...but it's still complaining that the memory is low and rejecting text messages saying the text message memory is full.
How big are these text messages anyway?
Do you have any games installed? Asphalt 5 is 100M (the first time you run it, it warns about that.) Another potential offender is email, especially is you have emails with attachments.
Thanks for the reply!
I do have Asphalt 5 on here (came with the phone I believe)...but I don't see it in the application list. Where/how can I remove it if it's not there?
If I remember right the evo got over 100 mb's free with sprint software removed. You can always try one of the sd card lag fixes and use the sd card as your storage. I think this is the best method since there is not enough internal storage.
The thing that's really driving me nuts now is that its showing nearly 50 megs free at this point....yet it keeps warning me and rejecting text messages. I've tried rebooting after I deleted a bunch of apps but that didn't do any good. Does anyone know what the threshold is for free space before it will operate normally again?
I'm also confused how I can have Asphalt 5 installed...but it isn't showing up in my application list. Is there a secondary application list that I'm not seeing?
If I am not mistaken, Asphaly 5 does not use that much space on the internal memory since on the first launch it downloads a 100mb of data to the SD card not the internal memory,
I deleted a few more apps in the interest of getting the phone operational as a phone again before I contine using it as a toy.
I'm now showing 55.33 megs free and things seem to be working again...so for future reference I'm guessing the threshold is 50 megs before it starts throwing a fit (I was at about 47 megs free before). I finally got the text messages that it's been rejecting for the past 2 hours...so that's good at least.
I'm still not sure what's using all the space though....is there anyway I can look at the actual files stored in internal storage?

Yes but I think it only works with root but I not sure. Let me see if i can find the commands to list internal storage apps for you.
Edit: you do need root to do this
su
mount -t rfs -o remount,rw /dev/block/stl9 /system (mount system)
cd /system (change to system dir)
cd /system/app (change to app dir)
ls (list all apps in the dir)
adb pull /system/app/filename.apk (save the file)
adb pull /system/app/filename.odex (save the file)
adb shell
cd /system/app
rm filename.apk (remove the file)
rm filename.odex (remove the file)
Example
su
mount -t rfs -o remount,rw /dev/block/stl9 /system
cd /system
cd /system/app
rm Sprint_App_Updater.apk
rm Sprint_NASCAR.apk
rm Sprint_Navigation.apk
rm Sprint_NFL.apk
rm Sprint_Promotion.apk
rm Sprint_Qik.apk
rm Sprint_TV.apk
rm Sprint_VVM.apk
rm SprintTVWidget.apk

That explains the missing apps...it was set to only show downloaded. Once I do that I'm able to see Asphalt 5 and a few others that were missing before. Asphalt 5 is only showing as 2.06mb fwiw.

It takes time to get use to android. I was a long time wm user and cook and I am still trying to learn cooking for android and i have been working with it for over a year. I am sure someone will make a update.zip that will remove sprint software for you. Its a lot easier then using adb. If you do want to try to use adb before someone makes a app or update.zip to do it for you use the commands I posted and it should work. Here is some info on adb commands. If you do try to use adb to remove apps this may be useful.
basic ADB commands
adb push - sends a file to the phone over ADB thru USB - adb push c:\test.apk /sdcard/test.apk
adb pull - receives a file from the phone over ADB thru USB - adb pull /system/app/Test.apk c:\Test.apk
adb shell - starts a shell connection with the phone
adb reboot - restarts the phone
adb reboot recovery - restarts the phone into recovery
adb reboot bootloader - restarts the phone into the bootloader (white screen)
adb remount - remounts the file system
adb install - installs an application - adb install c:\swype.apk
basic Linux commands to run through ADB shell
cd - changes directories - works through stock android toolbox - cd /system/app
ls - lists all files in the directory - works through stock android toolbox - ls /system/app/
cat - copies files - works through stock android toolbox - cat /system/app/Test.apk > /sdcard/Test.apk
rm - removes files - works through stock android toolbox - rm /system/app/Test.apk
mv - moves files from one location to another - works through stock android toolbox - mv /system/app/Test.apk /sdcard/Test.apk
cp - copies files - functions similar to cat - uses busybox installed by the EVO-recovery.zip into recovery mode - cp /system/app/Test.apk /sdcard/Test.apk
mount - loads the file system (usually auto loaded except sometimes in recovery) - mount /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system
unmount - unloads the file system - umount /system
So the disc space issue kept creeping up even after removing all of the Sprint crap, and I kept uninstalling other apps to compensate for it...until yesterday when I basically ran out of apps to uninstall and gave up.
I did a full wipe back to the stock image, installed the Andromeda rom, and restored all of my apps from Titanium...and now I'm showing 350megs free (with all of the same apps installed plus some extras that I've reinstalled after removing them for space before).
So basically there was either something majorly wrong with the space calculations before, or there was some program in the background using up a ton of space and not reporting it to the app manager. It seems like this first started to happen after I did the one click root when it first came out...not sure if it could be related or not though.
Just thought I would mention this in case anyone else is having the same issues.
I had this same problem with the Epic 4g's internal memory. But it also caused a myriad of other issues beside just the notification:
- Android Market wouldn't download any new apps, just stuck on Starting Download....
- I couldn't receive any text messages, I got the error message Couldn't receive the text message because there is no memory space (or something like that...)
- General laggy slowness
I've been on the fence with flashing the phone with a custom ROM but after reading Gipionocheiyort's post that doing so might solve my issues I attempted to do so. However, I couldn't because I couldn't download the update for Titanium Backup so I could back up my apps. I uninstalled some of Sprint's bloatware and it still didn't help. My free "memory" (I'm almost positive it's talking about storage and not RAM) was at about 24mg which seemed fine to me but apparently that's not enough to fit the 1kb of a 140 character SMS.
Anyway, I just bit the bullet and uninstalled a bunch of apps, got my free storage up to 64mg, rebooted and bam! My download queue started up instantly and I got all my day's text messages in a flood.
If Gipionocheiyort was having problems with 50mg free, maybe around 65mg free is the sweet spot? There must be a gross miscalculation of storage space for the storage, or maybe the OS just needs a lot of space to stretch it's legs? I have no idea...
Just wanted to put this up to help people if they are having this problem as well.
I woulda wiped the cache and the dalvik if i were you guys and experienced this problem though i never have. But you did have some calculation error and wiping the cache prolly woulda fixed it easily. these phones are suppose to use a lot of the ram. it helps it to be faster as the stuff you access the most is sitting in ram and it can recall on it very quickly.
you might also check your facebook sync if you have it...ive fixed several phones that had like 150 megs worth of data in Contacts, which im guessing was a result of like 15k friends, it downloaded all their pictures and stuff and took up all that space. you might look out for that as well.
Hi all,
Love my HTC Desire so much i bought a Witstech A81E Android 2.2 Tablet. Which is pretty buggy to say the least though on the whole works well.
The one thing that is driving me crazy is a number of apps dont install with the logcat error:
"packagename.apk requires unavailable shared library com.google.android.maps"
Now from what i have read apparently this device does not come with Google Maps API so my question is how do i add it?
Can it be done? Do i need to modify a ROM to do it? can i push it via adb or apk?
A little help would be greatly appreciated.
It would need to have google apps installed to be able to access the libraries. Best bet is to find out if it has been rooted yet and try to install the proprietary applications they can't ship the device with.
appreciate the help mate. i've rooted the device though where can i find google maps api?
the unit already has google maps 5.0 installed but apparently doesnt have the API's.
Any idea what im looking for? will it be an APK or just some files i need to put in a system folder?
i think im over my head
additionally i have searched for any com.google.android.maps related data on my desire and have found the following:
/system/framework/com.google.android.maps.jar
/system/etc/permissions/com.google.android.maps.xml
/etc/permissions/com.google.android.maps.xml
/data/dalvik-cache/[email protected]@[email protected]
could it be as easy as copying this over to my tablet?
Ill try it out tonight.
If the application is installed correctly it should work because the api is stored in the data. Is the application on the tablet installed to the /system/ or /data/ partition. It might be looking for the data in /system/
not sure what you mean about where the application resides? you mean the app i am trying to install? The app i am trying to install is Tasker.
i have been doing some googling and saw someone else have the same problem and he managed to fix it:
When trying to install some apps, I would see this error message in logcat:
requires unavailable shared library com.google.android.maps
I had the Google Maps app installed and working, but that didn’t fix the issue. It turns out, I had to add two other files and restart the phone. I found those files in the google zip from Cyanogenmod. It took a little fiddling, but I was able to use these instructions to remount /system in write mode. First step was to take the following two files from the google apps zip (gapps-hdpi-20101114-signed.zip) and put them onto my sd card.
/system/etc/permissions/com.google.android.maps.xml
/system/framework/com.google.android.maps.jar
Then to load them onto the phone, I opened the terminal emulator and ran:
su
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
cp /mnt/sdcard/com.google.android.maps.xml /system/etc/permissions/
cp /mnt/sdcard/com.google.android.maps.jar /system/framework/
Then after I rebooted the phone, I was able to install apps that depend on Google Maps. I can now check bus and train times, and do all kinds of other cool stuff with maps!

oh well back to random googling for me.
Well did you try using terminal emulator? And do what he did? B/c that looks like a remount to system to me easy as pie just do what he did you can find the files with root explorer or do it on your pc doesnt really matter. You can Not achieve what he did just using root explorer you need terminal emulator!

now i am confused. can i use root explorer or not? i used root explorer and then reset the correct permissions on the files though its still not working.
I take it i can get a terminal emulator that runs on the device itself yeah?
Ill try that next.
If that fails i am going to try my first attempt at cooking a ROM
Appreciate all the help!
no more love for Sage?

I did try to cook the original ROM though unyaffs couldnt extract the img.
looks like i might have to boot up a Virtual nix box.. damn this is so much harder than it should be.
Or visa-versa.
I can never seem to get this to work. I back up angry birds with TB, but if I make the backup while running a AOSP rom and then try to restore it after switching to a sense rom, then angry birds FC's or refuses to run or other such nonsense. The reverse is also true, backups from sense rom's don't work on AOSP rom's.
Anyone else experience this? Is there a work around?
Never had that problem. Always works fine for me. Perhaps go into the preferences for TB and verify that the setting for migrating apps across different roms is checked.
Will check that out. Didn't gnow that setting existed.

I found making a backup myself was best. If you copy and paste to your SD Card the following directories...
/data/data/com.rovio.angrybirds/
/data/data/com.rovio.angrybirdsrio/
/data/data/com.rovio.angrybirdsseasons/
You can paste them back later and get all your scores back.
NOTE: I strongly suggest making a new backup of these directories AFTER doing any upgrades to Angry Birds versions because I am sure the data has changed after the upgrade.
You must be rooted to make changes to those directories so if your not, I think there just might be some instructions here somewhere on how to root your device..
Last note: After pasting the directories back (Performing a RESTORE), you must modify the file permissions so Angry Birds can write do that DB file. Otherwise, as I learned the hard way, none of your new scores will get saved..
I am running Virtuous 3.2.0 but I do not think this effects where these folders are being stored.. (I think....)
Grrr. I'm having trouble with this too. I tried to do an adb pull on the data/data/com.rovio.angrybirds directory but it only pulled two files, and didn't preserve the folder structure.
I tried adb shell, and then
copy -r /data/data/com.rovio.angrybirds/* /sdcard/
but it says "can't create symlink..." ??? I don't know what this means
Any help copying these files/folders to my HDD or to the SD would be appreciated.
Yeah I'm rooted, and I did adb remount before trying the stuff above....
I used Root Explorer to copy the folders from /data/data to my SDCard/Angry Birds Backup. (I manually created that folder on my SDCard)
Beware that for some reason, Root Explorer kept building an extra sub folder when copying the files back (overwrite) to data/data/com.rovio.angrybirds... I ended up just copying the single file data/data/com.rovio.angrybirds/files/highscores.lua (for instance) over and that worked for me...
As to the symlink issue, I believe that is a permissions issue. Possibly that you do not either have permission to copy FROM the com.rovio.angrybirds directory or to your SDCard... (make sure you mounted your SDCard correctly) Not intended as a flame or derogatory remark about your skills..
(from searching xda-developers.com)
I KNOW you stated you did the adb remount but was it similar to this:??
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /data
when done, do
mount -o ro,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /data
I am close to the limit of my "experstease" here so I dont want to send you down the wrong path or make something worse happen.
I hope this helps.
THANK YOU!
Finally got it working. Ended up buying root explorer and copying over just the highscores file and it works! This has removed my one major frustration with rooting and flashing rom's.
Thanks again for the help!

False alarm, didn't work. I have all my previouse scores and can play the game, but completing a level with a new high score causes it to crash. :-( almost like it can't write to the highscores file properly or something.

False alarm, didn't work. I have all my previouse scores and can play the game, but completing a level with a new high score causes it to crash. :-( almost like it can't write to the highscores file properly or something.
