I have been staring at the WiKi pages etc.. trying to understand it all.
I have a Vario 2 and would like to change the menu layout, especially the front sceen e.g having shortcuts on it.
Can someone tell me is it a case of just changing the ROM to a different make i.e HTC or O2.
Sorry if this seems a silly question, but I don't wanna brick my device doing the wrong thing
Thanks
In order to change the layout of your today screen, you need various 3rd party apps and today plugins (what you need depends on what you want to do) ...
YOU DO NOT NEED TO CHANGE YOUR ROM TO DO IT
Thanks for the quick reply, I am not sure if you are familiar with the T-mobile layout, but I would like shortcuts to frequently used applications as icons on the desktop, I have looked into the setting of the Vario2 but all you can do is change the launch buttons in the start menu, also other things for example wireless strength etc..
Looks like TMo Vario II is the TyTN/Hermes .. You can use SPB Pocket Plus or iLauncher to put shortcuts to apps on your today screen ..

You should take a look at spb pocket plus. Good for making shortcuts on your today screen.
I have a Vario II and got rid of the t-mobile today plug-in, that's just annoying.

Dear Blobstrom
You can do all kinds of weird and wonderful things with your today screen to make it better for you to use.
I can recommend 2 main applications spb pocket plus, and sbsh ilauncher.
they are quite similar in many ways, and both have things to recommend them.
both offer free trials so you can see which one you get on best with, both offer support forums, so if you get stuck you can get help both from other users and from their software teams.
I'm sure there are other apps out there too, but I have used both of these and think they are both really good.
Thanks for ya help folks
Bob
Might need more though,
I had a quick go with SPB pocket plus and Wisbar.
But!
Iwant something to get rid of the other parts of the desktop, that is
Date
Owner
Tasks
etc..
I would like a kind off blank canvas or at least just icons instead of all the writing,
Thats why I think I may have to go the route of changing the ROM

If you wish to disable the other plug-ins:
Start> Settings> Personal> Today> Items> deselect the items that you do not wish to appear on the today screen.
Oh for crying out loud
Pillock of the century here
OK with that gone and SPB I maybe sorted
** Update 3 **
There's another beta coming out soon, with lots of exciting new features.:
* The promised 'folder widget' - display the contents of a folder on your device in a virtual screen. I use this as my 'podcast folder' (inside a dock) so I can select one to listen to.
* Directly select a folder/executable on your device whilst in the designer. Obviously you have to have your device plugged in via USB for this to work.
* A QVGA example desk (previous versions only had VGA)
* Lots of bugfixes.
** Update 2 **
Still working hard to get a preview release to you guys. A lot of the current work is in making the PC-based designer as intuitive as possible - an important factor I believe - don't want any complaints about crashing, etc (I hate that the most - you put hours into something, and it explodes).
Anyway - Some of you have expressed concern that you won't be able to get to your today bar icons (the icons down the bottom of the today screen) - while HotDesk is running. The current solution to this is a context menu bound the the desktop click action - that allows you to clip the window to a certain (configurable) height, whilst simultaneously minimizing all other windows - allowing you to see the today bar behind.
This screenshot demonstrates:
Shot
I hope to have a preview release (that won't have all the features that the final release will have, but will still have lots of cool stuff) - to you by the end of next week. Features expected in the preview release:
* Desktop designer, allowing drag'n'drop drawing of all desktop widgets (of course)
* Background widget - set your background, per virtual screen, to an image of any format that PocketPC can read (png, gif, jpg, bmp)
* Picture widget - place a picture at any location on your virtual screens. Handy for non-active element theme customisation.
* Button widget - Define up/down state images, and an action for your buttons (Actions such as 'go to next/previous/specific vscreen', 'start program', 'show/hide dock window' etc)
* Today item Widget - place any today item installed on your system onto any vscreen
* Gauge widget - Text/Graphical gauges linked to system properties (battery,disk/mem free etc). Graphical gauges have customisable background images, and gauge-bar size/image/location.
* Directory widget - place an icon box of any directory on your PocketPC inside a Virtual Screen or Dock - I use this inside a dock, so I can click an icon saying 'My Podcasts' - and up pops a dock sub-window inside my HotDesk with an iconbox with an icon for each of my podcasts. Think of it as a mini-filemanager in a Dock.
More features to come in the final version - but I just want to get this out there for now so you guys can get the creative juices flowing.
More news soon.
** UPDATE **
Got some screenshots of HotDesk running on my JasJar.
A bit of explanation:
Shot 1: The main screen of the demo desktop I'm working on. Here you see 4 application launchers, 2 text gauges (time/date), and a graphical gauge (battery). The Gauge designer can be seen in the designer screenshot at the bottom of this post.
Shot 2: A 'dock' demo. Clicking the 'folder' icon triggers a 'visibility toggle' action on the dock window. The dock window is a Virtual Screen like any other - it just happens to be nested inside another Vscreen.
Shot 3: A demonstration of nesting Today Plugins inside HotDesk. This is more difficult to code than it sounds: essentially you have to reimplement all the message calls/events that the Today screen does. Surprisingly, this was one of the hardest things to code in HotDesk so far. As you can see, I haven't done background transparency for Today plugins yet, but that is coming soon.

Hi All,
I'm creating a new desktop design tool for WM devices. Its aim is to be both friendly to designers, and also to be powerful enough that it's a useful replacement for the today screen et al.
I won't beat around the bush: I *hate* the today screen. I won't launch into a religious argument about that here - I'm just here to show you the work I've been doing.
Announcing: HotDesk.
Hotdesk contains two components: A program that runs on your WM device, that loads '.desk' files - files which contain all the art, logic etc - of your custom designed desktop. The other component is hotdesk designer - an early screenshot of which I've attached to this post.
The designer will be familiar to anyone that has used any kind of vector graphics tool. You simply drag/drop/move - your components on the 'virtual screens' of your desktop.
HotDesk is based around the concept of 'vscreens' - a desktop contains one or more VScreens - that are tied to an orientation (landscape or portrait). Based on the current orientation of your device, the desktops you design for that orientation are displayed - and the user moves between them using buttons that are tied to the 'change vscreen' action.
I'm sure most of you have seen offerings such as 'Wisbar Advance Desktop', and others. Don't get me wrong - Chris does a great job with Wisbar/Desktop - but HotDesk aims to go far beyond products such as these - by creating a rich set of embeddable components that can be customised to your needs. On my PPC, I often find myself jumping between a thousand separate tiny little applications that perform a certain task, or display a certain device statistic - HotDesk aims to allow you to tie almost any action to a button - or connect any device statistic to a custom graphical gauge (as can be seen in the screenshot)
Current features:
Custom button launchers. Definable graphics for up/down states
Completely customisable gauges (gauge image, cursor image, data source)
Multiple virtual screens, and programmable screen change logic
Different screens for portait/landscape views
File list control - e.g. display files in a folder for easy selection (I use this as a popup from my 'podcast folder')
Embed today plugins - In my opinion, today plugins are generally memory hogs - but if you must, you must
Tab widget - have a tabbed dialog within a vscreen
This application is not yet complete, but I must admit I'm excited by what it does so far. I'll be releasing a beta soon - so watch this space. If you have any feature suggestions (e.g. something you've been aching for, not found in other desktop-type apps) - now is the time to speak up.
Oh yeah, here's the screenshot (sorry for the size):
Designer Screenshot
Alex.
You app sounds like it will take customizing the today screen to a new level!
Looks very promising. Will I have the ability to turn my today screen into a dial pad?
kewl!
shud support QVGA / VGA & Square Screens..that's a plus..!
and abillity to change phone dial skin if possible..
Looks COOL!
If I read that right, it'll allow you to have more than one Today screen? Like a virtual desktop?
If so, is there a way to make the inactive one truely inactive so it doesn't use much RAM? That's probably asking waaaay too much, but would be awfully cool!
Either way, I'll be (not so) patiently watching....

Already done this - there are two 'memory modes' - light and heavy. Light mode dynamically loads each screen (including today plugins). If you don't go to the screen with the plugin, it doesn't load it.
Of course, the trade off is screen load time.
Heavy mode loads all screens at once - heavier on RAM, but faster.

As for the QVGA/VGA - each vscreen has a preconfigured size - the device-side application chooses the correct default vscreen based on the res/orientation. You specify the default starting vscreens in the designer.
so... when is the beta release??
Thanks
Greetings,
Hope to see your product soon,
and yes do make it compatible with omap 850 processor coz its little slower than
others.
And also if you could add minimizing windows like we have in desktop it would be great.
Hope you'll giv it for free cuz i dont have any credit card or any other card to pay. I'll love to have your application.

Testing
I would like to be part of the beta testing when avalible. GreggSymington(@)Sbcglobal.net . Looks great so far.
I would also love the opportunity to be in your beta group.
Would it be possible to lock one or more of your Today screens separately?
Also, will there be a toggle for accessing the main (or user defined) Today screen, similar to VJTodayButton?
Both of these functions would be really convenient.
Cool
Greetings,
Yes i will be participating in beta ver.
Is there a testing version yet?
Hi LordChaos
Been playing around with theme development and would love the opportunity to beta test your product

Any news?
WoW, nice way of creating virtual desktops. It reminds me to the Wisbar Advanced Desktop plugin for Wisbar Advance 2 but even better since you are also developing a proper tool for PC!!!!!
Congratulations!!!

Great Work
This looks fantastic. Would love to be in the beta test of this. Keep us posted.
Hey!
I've built a small today plugin that someone may find useful as well...
Well, since its my first Today plugin, its not perfect... However...
Anyway, it requires a hardware keyboard to be useful.
The attached ZIP archive contains both the CAB and user's manual.
t9 works, gstupidinput works. have not tested button assigned sips..
nice!
Dude, this rocks! I've been wanting someone to develop something like Launchy (http://www.launchy.net/) for Windows Mobile, this is a really nice first step.
I'm guessing it would be much more difficult to have the application also search and suggest documents, files, bookmarked web pages, and settings screens based on the text entry right?
What about making this a stand alone app that could be triggered without navigating to the today screen? For example, if I could launch this app by mapping it to a hardware button and then begin typing to launch any app, setting, document, web page, etc on my device it would be pretty awesome.
I like the looks of this. Can't wait to try it out.
Yay, its good that someone likes it
Yes, I've been thinking about converting it to a stand-alone app.
Yes, I've been thinking about adding support for documents, bookmarks, etc.
Maybe in next release (actually I will have to rebuild it almost completely )...
Thank you for feedback, anyway
This app sounds totally awesome, will the next rev have touchscreen support??? Very interested.
fantastic app!
thank you!
It HAS a touchscreen supported, but since:
1) using SIP (software input panel) is not too effective
- and -
2) there is no SIP button on the Today screen
hardware keyboard is required.
"2) there is no SIP button on the Today screen
hardware keyboard is required."
look at this:
http://dalelane.co.uk/blog/?p=287&cpage=1
"# SIP support
This was asked for a lot. The Today screen doesn’t include the button to show/hide the on-screen stylus/finger keyboard. So if your mobile doesn’t have a keyboard, TwitToday wasn’t much use.
I’ve added a setting now that lets you programmatically show the SIP keyboard when you tap on the text box. "

Yeah, Launchy is awesome. This app could be quite similar to what the Pre does when you start typing ...
I can't wait for SIP support.
That's really great I was wondering why no one developed Launchy for PPC. Afterall, it's one of the best launchers out there
Unfortunately I have Manilla on my today.
_TB_TB_, you should definately develop it into a stand alone app
Thanks man! Great plugin for my Universal
Well, this is absolutely awesome! It somehow reminds me a bit of the search function in the vista start menu (one of the things I actually like about vista). It just speeds up starting apps
I've put it through some test yesterday and today and have found a few bugs:
1. The biggest problem I found is that it will crash if the screen is rotated or the resolution is changed. This is a potential showstopper for a lot of phones (all those phones where the hardware keyboard slides out to the side and the screen is rotated for input - like on my wing). What happens is that the plugin will not be painted any more after the screen is rotated and clicking on it just leads to an error sound. What is scary is that if you soft reset the phone after the plugin crashes, sometimes it won't restart correctly (that is the whole screen will look completely garbled) and will need a second reset.
2. It slightly changed the order of the today plugins on my today screen and for some reason I can't bring them back to the right order anymore now. When I try to change that now, the today screen will shortly hide some items, then an error sound is played and the order is reset to the wrong one.
3. The font size of the plugin is different to the standard font size of the other today plugins (in my case, the font size is 11px and I believe that's the standard size). I believe there should be a registry setting somewhere where you can read out the right size.
4. It will only find what's in the "Programs" folder and subfolders but it won't find all the shortcuts that are right in the start menu or in folders in the start menu. For example, I have put the Office Mobile folder right into the start menu and therefore can't launch the Office apps through this plugin.

To be honest, I tried the touch flo 3d, the home 2, but the only thing I like is the normal, clean windows mobile today screen i like it, its neat , organized, and the xperia wallpaper gives it an elegant look. I alos modified the left menu key to initiate a new sms
what do u think?
I like it's neat clean look, but I prefer using the SE Today Panel.

Same here, a big fan of Winmo Today screen. When I jumped ship from Palm OS to Winmo, the Today screen really makes me forget I ever had a Palm OS device... Although the fond memories of rock hard stability creeps out now and then.
Currently Using itje's incredible Touch-IT v4.5 ROM. The Touchflo is nice, but more of a gimmick then anything else... Give me plain old Today screen anytime.
It just seems easier on the Today screen, that's why I have a lite rom installed, along with TF3d and panels.
I tend to always end up back at the default today screen. Something just nice about it.
Yeah I use it all the time now as it seems to be the most customisable without being fiddley and does all I want it too... I would like a today that is a combination of several of the panels but so far have found nothing that I like more than the normal today...
i use the today screen as my default screen when at work as i like to be in control of how many appointments are displayed, reminders, etc. it's nice to be able to switch to another panel for the weekends though ...
i'm a bit concerned about some of the screenshots for wm 6.5. does the today screen still exist ?
The standard Today just works. Give you access to what a PDA is for, PIM. There is a plugin called TodayAgenda which makes it perfect though.
glad you guys think the same way
btw, any idea how to make a shortcut for the start button? I downloaded a program, H button, that enables me to long press a key and a program comes up... but i want to access the start menu that way

Are you trying to assign a hardware key to Start Menu? If so, go to Start>Settings>Buttons
All this talk is making me want to use the Today panel more! I just tweaked it a little bit and I'm going to give it a try next week.
Does anybody know of a way to get more programs on it? Skype is on the list, and I think TomTom is, but I'd like a couple others.
I need to use the today screen to see the G-Alarm plugin, how much Internet traffic I had this month (SPB Wireless). Also I find it very convenient to use Elecont Dialer (a scrollable row of contacts to call or sms) and Elecont Launcher (a scrollable row of apps).
So I usually end up using it, even if SPB Shell is more touch-friendly. It just doesn't display all the information I need in one screen.
I always seem to go back to the spb panel as my default. its simple and looks clean i think compared with tf3d and point ui. im hopeing that when the new 3.0 shell comes out that it wont replace the spb x1 panel (although i know it will).
I've tried all the panels, shells etc. You name them, I've tried them. As said before, the Touch-IT v4.5 ROM is nice, but gimmicky. I admit I've installed it, but only to get GPS tagging of photos. I untick it in Start -> Settings -> Today -> Items immediately after it's installed.
I appreciate all the work that's gone into developing it, but its way too busy for me
My preferred interface is iFonz 2. The interface can be as simple or as 'busy' as you like. I prefer to have just a few icons of the programs I use regularly on screen as well as icons for the frequently called contacts. Also its very finger friendly.
For the programs that I use infrequently, it's no hassle to find them in Start -> Programs, and contacts are easy to find in iContacts

Hey friends, I'm with you. I think the today screen is one of the best inventions of Microsoft and is really underrated. It just makes sense to have active plugins share the most precious place on a mobile - the information screen after switching the device on. I think the iPhone is ridiculous in this regardö - just showing icons of the programs that can be launched is lame. Also, there are really powerful plugins available for Windows Mobile. I'm personally using the built in date/time and messages plugin together with PocketBreeze for all the organizer stuff and PocketPlus for system status (battery, memory), finger friendly app launcher and additional plugins as tab (spb weather actuall). Then I use the system tray as quicklaunch and for showing the currently selected phone profile from PhoneWeaver and my softkeys start Contacts and WM5NewMenu, with which I can very quickly place a new appointment, SMS, Email, Note and so on. With this setup, I can really use the device, not only play. Everything is just one or two clicks/actions away and I always have a good overview of what's going on.
I really don't understand why so many people want a better iPhone instead of a good Windows Mobile device. Windows Mobile has drawbacks but also strong points, of which the today screen is one of the strongest I think.
I am also a big fan of the Windows today page. I think it's the only one that can be entirely adapted to everyone's need, all other software are nice graphically, but not as effective as a well prepared today page.
Hey guys,
XDA developers obviously has some of the best mobile phone developers, so I thought I'd give suggestions for any bored coders on ideas I have for panels on the new 6.5 interface.
The WMP panel is pretty useful apart from the fact it only applies to WMP, there's a S2P alternative which I think is a good move but wouldn't it be better to create a program that lets you pick the player of your choice (e.g. S2P) from a list and then it will display the information and controls for that player. This means would mean less single players panels and a more all-in-one solution.
To this day I do NOT understand why tasks are such a pain in WinMo, on my old N95 tasks it displayed tasks on the today screen or atleast the amount I had stored. I think there's already something of this nature on the forum so ignore this one.
A quick lauch would be great considering the old 6.1 start menu was like that, but I'm not too sure if many people will want this feature back.
That's all of the ones I can think of, but if I get more I'll update this thread. Please state any thoughts or opinions you have .
150+ views and not one opinion! Geez.
I don't know if anyone has used the i8910 HD but the today screen work/looks really good and the fact there's a lock button on the today screen I think is a good move, maybe a lock panel on 6.5 would be a good step forward.

There are already QuickLaunch plugins for Titanium.
The music plugin would be a great idea, but unfortunately, I think it would take up too much space and too much developing time. I think we should develop the ones we have first.
There's one thing I wish Microsoft added to 6.5, unfortunately, I don't think there's much we can do about it on XDA. I think if we added the ability to hide the Titanium panel and easily open it again. Maybe if they took like the Hide/Show Desktop button from Windows 7 (the rectangular one) and added it to the left side of the home screen. So you hold it and slide it out, and the Titanium Menu unfolds... I'll have to work on mock ups of the idea in Photoshop.
I think an RSS plugin would be awesome

about showhide desktop button
if you have used manila 2d there was 1 such app(manila control) for which would hide manila and return to normal today screen and vice versa
maybe someone can do it with titanium
or maybe second today(the name of app is "second today") will work
Good to hear people's ideas.
The launcher does it use MortScript I was looking for something more stand alone.
For what it's worth, i would really like to see an Overclocking utility plug in for wm6.5 I use homescreen but i hate not to be able to see the cpu speeds and temperature in the plug in, i cant even tell if homescreen is working when its unchecked and the default titanium plug in is enabled.

CLauncher uses Mortscript to set up but can be changed and be set up directly in the registry.
GLauncher from gullum does use an own Editor and supports more pages, moreover you can set one program to start from the panel, displayed on the left icon (pictures in the registry) and another set on the left softkey and displayed on the icon top right (icon in the registry).
