So I see the Qualcomm Chipset is the same as the G1 phone, do you reckon we'll see a rom for this?
Hands down, I know nothing about rom making.
But one thing is for sure;
There will be Android on many of the HTC handsets out there, and Touch HD probebly going to one of the first phones with a fully ported version of Android.
Kaiser is the one who probebly be the first the rom makers will make a fully working Android phone, since most people who owns the phone is very skilled in rom making and they have already come a long way. You can run Android on a Kaiser today, even if the G1 hasnt been released yet.
Since Android is based on a linux kernel, it is quite easy to play around with it and do whatever you want with it. It's possibly plausible to port it to a laptop with enough work (if you would want that).
Wait and see, there will probebly be android on the Touch Pro, Diamond and the Touch HD sooner or later. Just a matter of time, and depending on how many developers who will work on it.
The developer scene just need a little kick in the but, they need to move forward. And one thing that the scene needs right now is a rawdump of the android os.
Android (or even iPhone, though I accept it is impossible) on HTC HD is my ultimate wish...
Best hardware with potential OS... also for a Gmail user...
I will go for HTC HD once this issue have been responded.
The words "iPhone" and "potential OS" are absolutely contradictory... there's probably no other mobile OS that lacks so many important features and is so limited.
Same for Android. At least, Android has the potential to improve, iPhone doesn't.
One potential issue with Android on the Blackstone is the lack of hardware input on the Blackstone. At the moment, Android doesn't contain a SIP, or a SIP framework.
Other than that, it should be possible to rebuild the Android source for the subtly different hardware.
The Android bootloader will need to be edited and flashed onto the Blackstone, and that may conflict with WM/WMs bootloader.
This is not quite truth.
HTC Vogue has actually been the first mobile to run android almost fully (see thread below for more.)
Kaiser at the moment can run only 0.8 version of the SDK and with serious impediments, like not making a reliable data connection, call only on 3g, among others.
We are still to complete a proper compilation of the latest released code. But that will come fortunately.

I also see that on other android sites that now people are doing those IME and SIP so I dont worry.
well, though u may say iPhone OS is not potential and limited, but it is true that it brings lots of new concept. Even though people now in this forum tailor made a lots of iPhone like software for their WM devices like slide2play etc... this is because they found these iPhone components are more enjoyable.
Of course, I already have given up my wm devices and change to iPhone as it supports a Gmail user like me fully with better interface and fonts, I have discontinued using MS outlook after 10 years with Yahoo mail. So I do not need WM devices anymore.
However, I must admit that HTC HD is a great great hardware so I really hope this can be put android inside.
To me, and we can see that, WM is really limiting after years, not much and could not improve further.... the fonts, application (browser, video player n quality etc) and its ergonomics.
For iPhone, it does well for Gmail, either by Mail application or web (same format as web- stack)
I use free www.nuevasync.com services to push contacts and calendar events with phone and web.
I believe it works better in Android the self environment...look forward seeing it soon

I totally disagree with the no room for improvement, I would say reconsider on how much your iphone can improve.. How much can it be customized? Close to ZERO... I dont have an iPhone but i have an iPod Touch, which is exactly the same as the iphone without the phone (and the camera). I know how it works, what can be done how much customizable it is.
I also have a WM6.1 Pro device (Samsung Omnia). Really, it kills the iphone, wipes it out totally...
I would say wait and be a little patient until Windows Mobile 7 comes out, I think microsoft already "got the message" about the interface, few screenshots I looked for Windows Mobile 7 looked very promising and have the potential of becoming even better than the iPhone interface.
Rumors and buzz say WM7 will be available 1st quarter of 2009
I am pretty sure, that when MS releases WM7 the developers will go nuts cooking up a new roms for all the HTC devices and the Touch HD ofc.
Again WM7, very promising interface/usability-wise!
check out the rumors:

Android on Blackstone
Does anyone know if any official or non-official working on android on this device?
I'm looking for this...
aren't we all!!
if someone gets android running well on this, this would be an absolute killer!!!
BUT is it actually possible at all?
****edit**** just saw the other thread for this....
the latest reports say that WM7 will not be out until late next year and then each phone company will have to do all their own tests etc on it so we are unlikely to see it until 2010........this is from what i have read.......

Even so, I think WM7 looks very promising, worth the wait
A first look on Android, at least for me is not so exciting, sure it has cool features sleek look and interface but still, is too new, it can hardly pass WM with loads of apps, software and customizations out there.
http://androidcommunity.com/android-coming-to-the-htc-touch-hd-20081007/
YES BUT IT WILL BE AT LEAST 12MONTHS UNTIL wm7 IS RELEASED AND THEN ANOTHER (oops caps- sorry) several months before all the bugs are out of it..... until then what are we to do? I reckopn android will be ported to HD by some enterprising person within a few months at the latest.....
Agree...No offense but WM always under-estimate their launch dates...
I really go for android this time
any android team member aware this!!?? time to do implantation!!
There was already a thread about this... I'll merge the two.
Don't forget that the android doesn't have a soft keyboard.
And the hd doesn't have a physical keyboard!

I have written a couple of small applications already to the Android Emulator, just to test the potential, and I can just say: There is no problem implementing a soft keyboard into the default GUI. You can access and change almost everything directly in the user interface. You have access to change the behavior of any default application! Build a soft keyboard to Android, written in Java, to work on any device that does not have a keyboard, can not be a hard task.
If I have time to fiddle with Android when I arrive at home I will start the task of implement an java-application that can do this. I really hope I have the time since lack of time is my biggest problem right now.

Android 0.8
since a few days Android 0.8 is working on the Diamond/Raphael:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=RaphaelLinux
I thought, since the hardware of the HD is not very different, it might also work on the HD.
I tried this file:
http://netripper.babyburner.dk/raphael/raph_20081105-01_android_v0.8_touchscreen_fix.exe
But my HD seems to get stuck in the Linux booting process :-(
Anybody got an idea how we can make this work?
Hey Guys,
It is quite good that nowadays there are heaps of reviews/comments for everything specially Handheld devices. but it make decision so hard! Once you decide to buy something you will find some Cons for your selected device!
I was going to buy HTC Touch HD, I really like its big screen and so called iPhone killer features (hahah...) but then I get familiar with HTC Hero which comes with Open Source OS (I m crazy about Open source things! once you try it you really feel freedom!). so I changed my mind!
Although Android and HTC Hero have quite long way to go, but I think it is worthy to try, since Open source application develop very fast and once a bug happen (like lag problem in HTC) a big community programmers can get together to fix it. I dont wanna talk about open source capabilities cuz a lot to say. just have look at how ubuntu and other Open source OSs have been developed and today software vendors make a copy of them in their new applications (like MacBooks fancy effect copied from Compiz package in Linux)
So I just feel that I will go with HTC Hero and my main motivation is open source OS. and the simplicity of programming in this new platform (it integrate with Eclipse my favourite IDE. I tried to code for WinMo but honestly it was quite hard for me to deal with .NET things! )
I didnt choose Touch HD (or iphone) just because of their restrictions and less flexibility compare with Open sources softwares.
Hope some folks find my lines interesting and motivator
I have both and since getting my Hero the HD barely gets used (Both on seperate contracts).
I prefer it because of the screen, the way it is handled and displayed and generally the OS runs so much smoother than Windows Mobile.
If (or should I say when) Android gets ported to the HD I will try it on that and see how that goes!
But I am happy with my Hero .
mmm... I never think of that, so you mean it is possible to port Andriod for other devices? does it available for other HTC models as actual OS not simulated run on top of WinMo?

It's actually not that simple. There is an Android project ongoing for the Diamond and Raphael (Touch Pro) but it more experimental than anything. I've tried it on my Diamond and some parts of it did work but as it is now you could not use it every day.
The HD running Android and the HTC Sense UI would be awesome though
Edit: Android loads on the Diamond by running a program called Haret which loads some initial bits and then the phone reboots into Android. Next time you soft reset it goes back to WinMo.
So Android is being ported to WM handsets... is the opposite possible?
I really dig my Hero, and Android is nice, but hands down, I will take HTC Sense 2.5 on WM6.5, 10 times out of 10.
Arent the guts of the Hero and the TP2 very similar... this should not be that hard for the XDA fam, right?
Sorry to burst your bubble, but nobody here really wants it bad enough to put forth the time and effort to port it. Many of us see WM 6.5 as the inferior platform that it is (compared to Android), and it doesn't seem worth it to a lot of people. Another thing is, WM isn't open source like Android, so it would probably be even harder to get working. Sorry mang

Most likely NO, why? time to port all the different drivers , UIs etc. and another reason...is WHY?? WinMo is a piece of sh#@ that is why we are using Android based phones
I love some of the apps on WM 6.5, but it's SO dead to me. I don't ever want to see it ever again, as long as I live.
To answer your question, I doubt it will EVER happen. Ever. The reason being is that drivers would have to be written from scratch on lots of the hardware. There would have to be a bootloader modification too in order to actually load the WM image, which I'm not sure how that could be accomplished without a tremendous amount of work either.
Usually when the guts are similar (as you're right in TP2 and Hero) but the screen is definitely different, there's a trackball, what do you do with the hardware keys, etc. Lots of "behind the scenes" differences IMO.
You never know though, I always try not to say "never."
That would be going backwards, and tje 6.5 ui is aweful ugly with the ugly menu buttons on the bottom. Ohhh dont forget about the lag issues
No, but you should be able to pick up a WM 6.5 phone coming soon to a dollar store near you.
I gotta say I made the switch to android because I was able to boot android on my Touch but going from android to winmo is simply insane...
Why dont you buy a TP2 and use the android build thats out, my friend got it up an running and is now saving for a hero or supersonic. I used to swear by winmo even when the gayphone came out but Android ****s on Winmo 6.5 EVERYDAY
People are replacing WM6.5 with Android for a reason.
Only a fool would go the other way.
This may just be the craziest thing that I have ever read.
I think its safe to say most us here came from winmo, I also think its safe to say after about a day or less we said,"im never goin back to winmo." Im pretty sure everyone meant it too. the winmo guys are still sayin
That their waiting to switch because android is still new and not polished enough lol I was sayin it too lol but I was wrong as hell hence why im here
It would be an interesting endeavor, but as others have said you would probably have trouble finding someone with the technical knowledge who cares to do so. Most android users have experienced WM, but most WM users haven't experienced android. I think what will be interesting is when WP7S comes out, then you might see people trying to get that on our phones.
But really why should anyone want to port WM6.5 on to android phones? For the same reason many hacking projects start: just to see if we can
There's a major reason Android can run almost anywhere whereas WinMo is basically trapped on the devices it was originally developed for:
Source code
The marketplace is finally beginning to understand the power of that distinction.
I understand the questioning since they are porting Android to WinMo phones.. but did you ever stop to think that the reason they're doing that is to get rid of WinMo? Why in the world would you want to put WinMo in place of Android?

they are not doing it to get rid of winmo, its just one of those things thats cool to have, just like any other app.if us winmo users wanted android, we would buy android, i mean why would you go with just android when you could go winmo and have both? it not perfect yet but it is getting better. and standard android is so ugly to me, it just looks so simple{as does standard winmo} without sense ui.but sense on winmo just looks alot better than android sense. just my 2 cents.....

If source code had anything to do with it, BlackBerry and the iPhone wouldn't be so popular.
Android is overtaking WM because it's a better, more consumer-friendly OS with more, better apps.

Truer words have not been spoken regarding why we all left winmo
i think if a dev wanted to he could port wm to the hero or any android phone. but as others i came from webos & winmo and android is by far the best os ive ever used. i also think wm7 will be a huge fail as android is close to dominating the market share right now. i know what im sticking with!
android is close to beating apple, winmo and palm. it has them all running scared right now, that's why apple is suing htc.
hello.
i was wondering, since i'm going to get an htc Tattoo these days, and i saw some clips on YouTube: hd2 running android, hd mini running android, etc. is it posible to put WM on some android powered device...??
i know, iknow, android i so much better than the WM, but i would like to see WM running on, soon to be mine, HTC Tattoo...
Doubt it since the file system for Android is based of Linux.
then y not just buy a WM phone? y buy an android to have windows mobile?
i know where hes coming from i got hd2 and it runs android fine but i still want to keep WinMo but i want to run WinMo as a 2nd OS
WM!!!
That´s the wonder of WM
It is wonderful to be able to switch between OS!!
If in some moment I just thought about moving to Android with this dual boot I´m staying in WM all the way!!

It is actually pretty good and stable. Battery, without very heavy usage, can last you about a day (and I am sure that there are things that can be done to make it last longer). The other device(s) that run Android smoothly are the Vogue, the Kaiser, and the Polaris. Everything works, great battery life, and best of all... very cheap devices (you can get a Vogue for ~$80 on Market Place or eBay)
Now If only I didn't break my Kaiser by standing on it I would have installed android.

it might be wonderful...but not with WM...definitely
and about the wonder of WM...the only wonder is that it can mysteriously and magically crash or get stuck and cause trouble and pain in the ass to the user hehe.
sorry orb but this is getting personal...you and me....we have to argue about this all the way hehe
cheers mate
@fino1: you won't miss anything without WM...trust me..i've been using it since wm 2002 and the android was a relief....although WM is far better, superior and more versatile than java os (mostly used os for mobile telephones) or symbian ,IMO
WM is pure function ...no user experience....in fact user experience is terrible and far outdated, and experience is what does or does not frustrate you
android is more about experience right now,but function isn't far behind,it is slowly catching outdated WM and getting some lead in that race...
first ive heard of this haha
Well.. tbh I second this request.. I believe in porting mutliple OS to 1 Device it just gains more functionality.. I believe it would be quite comfortable to use e.g. Android for browsing & websurfing.. and on the other hand use some neat WinMo Apps for dunno.. maybe some office work or something like that..?
will a custom ROM have android instead of WM6.5 ?? i mean it will direct boot to android or we still have to open android from WM6.5 ??
at the moment you run android as an application in windows mobile.
other way is to flash andoid to nand like we now flash our windows mobile roms.
as far as i know there is not enough room to flash both OSes to nand. <- pls correct me if im wrong
oh ok when it will be 100% functional with everything working it could be flashed to nand without the WM ?
why did u buy a winmo phone when u want android?

i think thats wrong. android is NOT an app running in windows mobile. this would mean android is runnning as some kind of emulation. as far as i know, winmo is still needed in order to initialize the hardware. by starting haret.exe, the wince-kernel is shut down and a linux bootloader is started.
hopefully we'll be able to flash an android rom to nand and have a device which can hold either OS equally. I personally like the fact that the HD2 can become versatile. I agree - that if someone wants to run android only, he should buy an Android device. I wanted to have a taste of android with the ability to run WM as i have for the past 4 years.

I bought the device with the intent on running android. I am not help bent on completely removing it
There hasnt been a device until the evo 4g that had the same screen size. And since i dont hop carriers I cant use the evo.
The my touch 3g slide screen is too small
The my touch screen is too small
The samsung galaxy screen is too small
The g1 screen is too small.
The samsung behold 2 sucked !
THe cliq sucked
The nexus 1 screen is too small
So people do have reasons to have the hd2.
Plus a lot of people I have met with the hd2 didnt realize what they were buying. Most people hate the phone. They then see mine with android and fall in love.

Can some one answer this question. What windows mobile 6.5 do, that android can't do? This is my first WM phone and I tho it was alright. I would of got the Evo but I can't switch carriers until the end of the year. Since now we got android, I'm staying with t-mo. I pay full price for this phone ($560.00 in NYC) I first regretted and since android I don't. Anyways I found that android do much more for me than WM. So if I'm wrong please some one tell me. Ps: excuse my english.

For me, I would consider the NAND flash for Android ROM the 100% fully functional since that is of primary importance to me here.
I bought my HD2 even though I knew it had WM. And at the time I didn't want Android at all, just my WM, but with some configurations & such.
But now that I have Android running on it instead, I never want to go back.
And just like someone else said, there ain't an Android phone around that have the same hardware specs as the HD2. Except the EVO, but I've had my phone a long time before they released the EVO. And from what I know it's only available in the US. Maybe I could import one and configure it to run on Swedish networks, but wth..
The wife and I got this phone and she didn't realize it was Windows Mobile. This was my first experience with Sense UI and thought it was awesome.
I loved the phone for what it could do and actually "Used" it to it's potential. She "HATES" it. Then again, I don't blame her. Sense fails hard when it comes to texting and load lag
She can't wait till I can flash Android to her phone. Me, i'll stick with my options.

I don't think people who HATE WinMo buy this phone with the sole intent of putting another OS on it. I think most people bought it for the screen & the media capabilities. For me, I saw a lot of potential in the hardware specs and bought mine cause it's the last real WM phone(I'm sappy like that) and because it's a GSM phone that I can unlock & use for years to come. It was like buying a barebones PC that I could run whatever I want on & have multi-boot systems.
I decided to run Android on it initially out of sheer curiosity, and so I can learn the next OS I'm gonna be using. When WM dies out(it's GOING to happen, so we may as well face it), Android will be what I will move on to partly because its Linux & open source, and partly because there's no way in pus-spewing, blood-gutted hell that I would ever use an iPhone or Blackberry(WP7 has NEVER been an option). I must say, Android runs VERY well on this phone even in its current stage of development, I can't wait to see how awesome it'll be as a fully flashable rom. I'm already almost to the point of not even missing WM anymore. I've been running it for a week now & I'm getting to know how everything works & I love it. Very versatile & powerful, and quite stable. I don't think I quite realized just how many lockups and crashes I was really having with WM until I started using Android as my main OS. The first time I used Android I HATED it because I had a bad build & an underpowered phone(One of the first leaked Froyo builds on a Sprint Hero) and it ran like crap. But with the combo I've got now, it's simply awesome. Everything is so integrated & all the programs mesh together so beautifully. It really does 'just work', and it's hackable & customizable at the same time. Best of both worlds. If & when a NAND version of Android for the HD2 comes out, you can count me in.
Don't get me wrong, I will ALWAYS love WinMo. I think it's the best mobile OS there ever was, and it's incredibly sad that it's dying. It would still be going strong if Microsoft had just marketed it better & hadn't copped out with WP7. But I'm not gonna stay with a stagnant platform that nobody develops for anymore(I'd have stayed with Palm OS otherwise), and I was honestly starting to get bored with it. I had pushed WM to it's limits & did everything I could possibly do with it, and it's just time to move on. I believe Android is the wave of the future, and will eventually overtake the iPhone in popularity.
Plus I love robots, so anything named 'Android' is automatically cool in my book
I agree with you wholeheartedly. Friendly robots are a plus in my book.
