I realize that I'm likely to get instantly bashed for asking about this, but please let me preface my post with saying that I have done about 6 hours of research, here and elsewhere, but have not found a definitive answer to my question(s).
I recently purchased an xperia x1a. To my vast disappointment, the speeds i'm getting online are incredibly low (~200k). I know it has nothing to do with my service because if I pop my SIM into another phone, i get ~1000k generally.
My phone came "unlocked" and unbranded. I am in the US on ATT, and I can connect to HSPDA without a problem (isp.cingular as my AP).
I would like to try installing another radio on my phone to see if it might resolve my problems, but from all of my research, it sounds as though doing this requires security unlocking (CID) the phone.
First off, is there any chance my phone, brand new, came "security unlocked"? If so, is there any way to tell?
If I must security unlock my phone, it sounds like the code to do so is floating around, but since it's for sale places, no one is willing to give it away for free (or is it somehow linked to your IMEI?). I'm not altogether unwilling to pay to unlock my phone, although if there is any other route for upgrading to a better radio without having to pay, obviously that would be ideal.
I've got the radio I want, I've hex edited it so that it should work on my phone, but I'm very leery about bricking it by installing a radio that won't work. As I said, I have done a HUGE amount of research on this topic (flashing a new radio) and haven't found much that's definitive. On my last phone, a Diamond, I had no such issues (I purchased it retail, also unlocked and unbranded).
If anyone can shed some light on some of these questions, I would really appreciate it. I've been over to htccode and it sounds like they have a solution (at least for the X1, not sure about the X1A), but I would really like to understand this entire issue better.
Also, my current radio is 1.06.25.29. Can I simply cleanly upgrade to one of the newer radios found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=477801 without having to worry about unlocking? are the radios for the X1 and X1A the same?
I promise, I've searched.
YUP 200 Kb only ???
My provider is TIGO and, same as you I assume, I use a "security locked" X1a under the HSDPA 850MHz band
If you are not getting better speeds with your current radio, I guess a Radio upgrade wouldn't help because I've been gettin' up to 3,500 Kbps downloads without any worries or special tweaks, and yes I started with Radio 1.06.xx.xx
Some possibilities:
1- Try checking your advanced network config (under start->settings->connections) to check if HSDPA is enabled
2- It could be an operator-config dependant issue; check your parameters in your otehr phone against the parameters auto-configured in the XPERIA
3- Check if your phone is REALLY X1a: remove the battery and the white label must say "X1a", not just "X1"
Finally, ALL RADIOS and EVERYTHING posted here @ xda-devs work for ALL X1, it doesn't matter if it is X1a or X1i
PS: The "security unlock" is ONLY required to flash Radios from OTHER HTC devices (but we have already managed to make them compatible by hex-editiing them )
hope this helps
I've tried everything i can think of and I'm banging my head against the wall. The phone's next. Actually, I think that I'm going to go ahead and get a new SIM from AT&T and see if that helps any, since I'm now having some issues with my blackjack all of a sudden....

Not to give away too much specific information, but I've got a new TMO MDA and the building I am in actually has TMO repeaters. Other TMO phones get perfect reception, and I can even put this new sim into my old unlocked HTC Typhoon and get perfect reception, yet my new TMO MDA won't get any signal.
I'm attempting to scour the registry to find some bit of info or a bit to flip or something of that sort to diagnose the issue. Our TMO rep apparently has RF engineers working on the issue, but if I can fix it sooner than they can I'd be happy.
So, basically, only these new MDAs (other new MDA owners are experiencing the same issue, as well as SDA owners) fail to authenticate to the repeaters in this building. I doubt the repeaters have a list of phones that allow authentication, since the Typhoon was never released by TMO and that can authenticate fine. So I'm thinking there is some bit on the MDAs that is sticking to one band frequency or another, or something to that effect.
Any idea where I could look for info, whether it be a web source or maybe a registry key I could tweak or something of the sort? I got the engineer mode to work (after another registry tweak to turn it on), and it isn't showing any information since the phone isn't connecting to any tower/repeater.
when you go to select networks to use, does the phone give you a list of possible cell networks?
Sorry if i sound obvious....but:
1. Have you compared the Roms on the phones? Maybe the new phone has a different rom which is causing the problem.
2. Have you tried the phone anywhere else outside your building...
3. The engineering mode will still work even without a SIM installed, so if your getting blank information then I think you have an old Rom
Hope this helps
Answers to questions in the thread:
1. If I go to select my networks manually, and it searches for networks, all it finds is the Cingular network, which I can not connect to. It won't find the TMO network at all. But I know it exists because other TMO phones work fine with full reception, and even my old Typhoon works with my new TMO sim in it.
2. The roms on all the MDAs shipped from TMO USA 1.8.10.2 and GSM rom 01.09.10.
3. Phone works entirely fine outside of the building. The building is shielded, but there are repeaters in the building for current TMO users. I know they work since other TMO phones other than the new MDA and SDAs work fine.
4. As for engineering mode... interestingly enough, now that I do have reception (I'm at home right now), I also get blanks. I thought that because I didn't get any reception, I wasn't getting anything from the engineering mode. But interestingly enough, I still don't even though I have reception.
Methinks I do need just the GSM rom. Someone mentioned it in another thread in the Wizard Upgrade forum. Where might I get just that ROM, maybe I'll give it a shot and see if it fixes before doing a full ROM upgrade (which I'd like to do for performance reasons, but I haven't gotten a definitive answer whether I can revert back to bone stone TMO roms with extended roms and everything yet).
I woould suggest getting hold of one of the phones that works, back up the registry, and restore it to the phone that doesn't work. That would tell you if its a registry setting, or a phone/rom problem

Well, there are no phones that work.
The phones that do work are your run of the mill non-smartphone phones, not a WM5 phone.
Actually, that's not true since my Typhoon is running Windows Mobile 5, but it is entirely different than the MDA.
Only all the stock MDAs shipped from TMO are failing to authenticate to these repeaters. Makes me think that updated the radio rom would help, or something on the repeaters is blocking just these two phones (the Wizard and the Tornado).
Try updating the wizard with one of these roms:
ftp://xda:[email protected]/Wizard/Roms/Tmobile/
Well, I updated the radio rom to 01.12.10...
And still wont connect to these repeaters. The phone seemed snappier to connect when I stepped outside of the building, though. So there is a plus. However, there has to be some reason the repeaters in this building are not allowing my phone to auth.
My reception is poor on the phone. If I stick a piece of wire into the antenna port, it improves. I have flashed to the Windows Mobile 6.5 ROM which I believe has an upgraded radio version and am still having problems. Does anybody have any suggestions?
Welcome to forums
Enter to the Universal Wiki and go to the fttp site, then you can download several radios.
The best way is to test the more you can till you get the one with best reception.
What version do you have?
Most recommended are 1.15, 1.17 and 1.18
Good luck,
Most ROMs don't have the radio included, you need to flash it separately. So, no, don't think your ROM came with upgraded radio included. Speaking opf upgraded radio - sometimes upgraded, as in higher in number/date of issue is not necessarily the best for your particular location/ROM combination, so my advice would be to test a few different versions and see which one performs the best in your location.
Thank you kindly for the assistance. It was this issue that led me to put my Universal away and get an Advantage, but once I found this website I decided to see if I could get some help in fixing the Uni. I was missing it
whelp I put the Radio 1.18 on and it did no good at all. I attempted to put the Radio 1.15 on, but the flash utility is showing a picture of a device that is not a uni and it is not working when I try it. I have downloaded the file from a couple of different places on here and it is labeled as Universal_radio-1.15.00
any assistance will be greatly appreciated up to and including my willingness to bear your child. As I am a male, this would be no easy feat so it should show the depth of my gratitude
I have 4 years with my Uni and tested a lot of ROM´s and radios and still have the bad reception problem.
Is something I can live with..., but in some areas reception is so bad.
Some are better than other. I discovered on my personal case that radio 1.08 and 1.18 are the ones that give me better signal and are not a battery eaters.
This must be also something to do with cell provider, on my case, Telcel sucks in terms of reception, and prices and, and....
problem is that it does not work at all in my office. maybe i can rig up an antenna that is on the inside of the phone

Yes, some ROM upgrade utility apps will show Magician. If you downloaded a file labelled as Universal_radio - go ahead, it's all good and it is for your device, don't worry about the picture, however, follow the reset instructions for Uni, not the ones shown. Should work, don't see any reason not to. What is the message you are getting?
Rigging up an antenna should be the last resort. As far as reception is concerned, I can have only 1 bar showing or none at all, but that means I still have the reception, it's when I don't see 3G or the data connection attempts to connect and fails, I know there is a problem.
Interesting thing: we have a large mall and part of it has no reception whatsoever for my Uni, yet has some on other cellphones I use, but barely. So when I enter that area my GPRS and 3G connection disappears completely and restarts when I leave, I know exactly the location of the 'communications black hole'.
Can it be that your office blocks the GPRS? Can it be that your internal antenna is malfunctioning? What are the exact symptoms?
As for bearing children for me, I think it's the job better left to the professionals (women)
Forgot to mention, I don't have reception in my very own garage of all places! Drives me nuts!
that probably for the best since I wasnt sure where to begin. I went home and googled it and surprise surprise it's supposed to be darned near impossible (edit: me giving birth, that is)
my whole building is a blackout zone for my phone. other phones are weaker, but my uni is the only one I have seen that has no reception whatsoever. I got the radio 1.15 working and still no go.
I got the uni because I really need a phone that I can realistically work with Word and Excel on to save me the hassle of carrying around a laptop. I don't think anything will work besides a 'custom' internal antenna or maybe I just stick with the Advantage until the new rumored HTC clamshell comes out (assuming I can afford it)

don't get your hopes up. It's all a part of the rumors swirling around about the Leo and the Thoth since it looks like the Thoth will no longer be of the Advantage line
Thanks for that
Hopefully they really launch something similar to Uni!!
Alright, as a very last suggestion - try factory ROM, it comes bundled with Radio and Ext Rom, see what happens.
it's all a no go
looks like I am going to have to go to work on it.
Now all I need is a plasma torch, 50 feet of nylon rope, a hydraulic press, 17 ferrets, and a bible
I accidentally posted this in the wrong forum, this one seems more appropriate.
First of all, this forum has been very helpful. I almost find that there is too much information available here, boggles the mind.
In any case I have just upgraded to a Touch HD from a Touch Cruise (the first edition). The Touch Cruise was a Great Phone, still is – I was just looking for an upgrade (upgraditis). The model I supposedly obtained (EBay Auction for $161) is the T8285, which is perfect as I am USA bound on the AT&T Network. For all intensive purposes the Phone is working as expected, looks great too!
My first question (I know asked before) is that the phone says it’s a T8282. I realize that any past ROM updates can do this – I do not have a clear history of the device. Looking at the Phone Network selections I have four choices (see below). It does show the UMTS Bands AT&T Operations on, so can I assume that this is an T8285?
• Auto
• GSM(900+1800)+UMTS(900+2100)
• GSM(1900+850)+UMTS(1900+850)
• UMTS(2100+800)
Next: I do not have the Data Plan, nor do I want it. It’s just too pricey and I really do not need it (I have WiFi available at home and work, which appears to be working great). A lot of Forum advice here goes into available Programs to shut off/block the Data from working. Right now I have only two options selected (Turned On) under Connections, the Phone and WiFi. There is a Tab for Data which I left OFF. This seems like a no brainer but as it hasn’t been discussed as an option to the No-Data desires, am I just simply missing something?
I know this is purely taste, but is there a “widely” preferred Screen Saver out there? I have had my Touch Cruise for three years and the Screen is Immaculate due to persistence/diligence on protecting the Screen, but I have noticed that there is differences in quality – LARGE differences! The one I liked the most was the HTC Branded Screen savers. They resisted scratches while not effecting operability. I am now using “Fellowes” Generic savers, which scratch relatively easy.
Of course I have other questions, but I will continue to work them out searching the forums for answers as needed. I know there are people who hate when questions are asked that have been answered before – I did research the above but either found not enough or too much contradicting information.
If you look under the battery, the model number should say BLAC100 or BLAC120. BLAC100=T8282, BLAC120=T8285.
Even if Data Connection is OFF in comm manager, the phone will still connect to the internet as needed. You'll need an app to prevent the data connection from starting, or put an invalid APN in connection settings.
But a large pack of the cheapest screen protectors off ebay and replace them as they get scratched?
Waaaah: It appears I have a T8282, not a T8285 as described in the Ebay Auction. It clearly has the BLAC100 identifier under the battery. However, this may be OK as I never intended to opt for the Data Plan anyway. Other than not being Data accessible for AT&T is there any other differences between the phones - even ever so slight? Like I said I am surfing the WEB via WiFi, making and recieving calls, and accessing the other programs without issue.
I am finding that obtaining a "non-Data-Plan" GPS program for these phones is difficult (obviously my only option now). I like TomTom (had Navigator 6 on my HTC Cruise) but the Nav 6 is not "fully" compatible. The Nav 7 is compatible but does not have available USA Maps. CoPilot Live V8 is out there, but Web reviews leave less-than-desireable reports for the Maps - but the program itself does gets high marks. If TomTom does not give some indication for getting the Maps I will most likely go with CoPilot.
I like the phone and plan on keeping it (I did reply to the EBay seller to see if he can do anything, but do not expect much if any). I see a french site referenced in these forums with a large list of compatible Software but can not current register to his site for the links (others are apparrently having the same issue right now).
If there is any advice/information out there I might find interesting please feel free to feed it back.
Thanks.....
There's no difference between them apart from the addition of different 3G bands, the T8282 came out first in Europe and has the European 3G bands, the T8285 is the 'rest of the world' version with more frequences available.
The T8282 will still work on GSM in the US, but you won't get any 3G, which will only be a problem for voice if you're in 3G-only area. Seems it's been flashed with a T8285 ROM which shows the US 3G frequences, but they won't work on an T8282 as the hardware isn't there to support it.
There's quite a few sat-nav programs available, off the top of my head, there's TomTom, iGo, Route 66, Destinator...
That's what I fugured. However now that you mention it - is AT&T (or will they) be going toward a 3G Only coverage phylosophy. If that is (or will be) their intention this phone will eventually be useless. I find it hard to believe that a changeover like that could take place overnight, but it does make business sense (kind-of). Why maintain multiple systems (in this case Bands) when just your top-of-the-line one will do. They also in turn force the populace to keep upgrading phones pleasing the manufacturers. Kind of a Software thing - only supporting the latest product, forcing upgrades.
So my T-Mobile HD2 is freezing up completely (necessitating battery pull) within a minute or two of turning on and using mobile data. Like the title says, it's happening on both ICS and Gingerbread ROMS.
HSPL 2.08
Radio 2.15.50.14
MAGLDR 1.13
CWM 3.0.0.5
Current ROM: Langthang's HD2 NDT MIUI STABLE VERSION 6.0
(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1010498)
Previous ROM: NexusHD2-ICS-CM9-HWA_V2.0
(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1434860)
Both ROMS run well (esp. the current one) except for the mobile data.
I've had the phone for about 16 months. When I first got it in the USA, I didn't trust myself to flash it to Android for the first time, so I had someone else knowledgeable put a Froyo ROM on it. So I can't tell you what version of HSPL he used to flash 2.08 to it. The phone worked fine (except for occasional overheating--it's an HD2, right?), including mobile data. This was in the USA.
Then I moved to Thailand where I didn't use mobile data at all for a long time. Last month I flashed over the old Froyo with the two ROMS (clean install) listed above and have started using mobile data for the first time in Thailand and am now noticing this problem.
More info:
1. Turning mobile data on and not actually using it actively (i.e. just letting whatever few Google things auto-sync in the background) will have it freezing within half an hour. Using it actively will have it freezing in 1-2 minutes.
2. Using a CPU governor (No-frills CPU control) set to the most extreme (“powersave”) keeps it from freezing up the phone for only a little bit longer than having it set to “performance,” so I don’t see the point in using that as a workaround.
I can guess what most people are going to say at this point: dude, you got one of the HD2′s with a hardware overheating problem; sorry, buy a new phone. Well, can’t afford to for a couple months so I’ve been trying to solve it in other ways. And anyway, I’ve stress-tested it with everything but mobile data (heavy use of camera, playing music, videos, and wifi) and no problems. Sure, it sometimes gets warm and might crash very occasionally...but no problems I can't live with.
So why in the name of all that is holy does using mobile data ALWAYS freeze it?
1. Would flashing a different radio conceivably help? Maybe because a different radio would work better with my carrier here in Thailand? (I know, you have to be careful that your radio is compatible with your ROM, else you brick phone. Also, I don't want to flash radio unless I absolutely have to because it's dangerous-ish).
2. Is HSPL version an issue?
3. Could it be my APN settings? Entering the info (minus the DNS stuff; don't know where that goes) from the following site (http://www.flexispy.com/globalapn.htm) stops mobile data from working at all. My carrier is AIS in Thailand.
Anyone who can help me, it's much appreciated. Thanks in advance!
HSPL fine & radio should be ok but was not best for me in asia but not due to overheating of device ...
Do the fridge test, keep it in fridge for 1hr in plastic bag to protect from moisture then activate data & see how it performs, keep it in fridge as much as possible or cool as possible with aircon, fan or ice bed ...
If you get lot longer times before freezing you can be 100% sure it related to heat & mainboard bga failure under heat.
Thailand is very hot and running temps of phones & notebooks are a lot higher here so a weakness is more easily reached ...
As you say you already have experienced overheating I would assume your mainboard is a bit more sensative to heat than most, we have over 20 HD2s in company use & in over 2yrs only 1 handset has had freezing issues & was mainboard BGA issue & new mainboard fixed it.
I would assume the the functioning of data produces more heat in term of cpu, radio stack & battery in a way that heat soaks the device to failure, I would of thought HQ video playback & heavy wifi use could see same fault so some more stress testing may be an idea too.
you on AIS 3G ?
You could try radio in my signature, I have used it in Thailand & asia pacific with great success so maybe worth a try !
I've done a little fridge testing and it does seem able to function on mobile data without freezing up. So obviously my phone's more sensitive than average to overheating (and also because of Thailand's heat), but I still wonder if using a different radio would work better and maybe not push my phone "over the edge."
One reason I still think there might be something wrong with the radio version is that I can never get 3G (only EDGE), even in places where I absolutely KNOW there's coverage. The other reason that makes me suspect the radio is the stress-testing I was talking about before. I tried really hard to make my phone overheat with a lot of processor-intensive stuff and I couldn't.
I really don't want to beat a dead horse, but does anyone else have any opinions or ideas before I mess with flashing a different radio?
P.S. Thanks for the link to your radio, Mister B.

IMO Mr. B is right about overheating motherboard, but couldn't harm anyone to flash another radio version.
Even I'm reservated on this, I wish you GOOD LUCK!
No 3G: Is 3g enabled in phone settings ?, is 3G enabled on your AIS sim card account ?
Trying another radio will do no harm & may help as might using the least resource hungry ROMs ... Android is a power hungry bulk of an OS & most mainboard faults only appear on Android or are worse on android ...
I have same TMOUS HD2 & 3G works fine here so no issues with phone Radios bands as many worry about ...
Mister B,
After writing that huge long post...I might be an idiot.
3g was enabled in my Android settings, but I didn't know it had to be enabled on the sim card. I'll go to a phone shop tomorrow and ask them about it.
Thanks everyone for their advice.
I not know who the idiot but worth checking as I believe if not buying a sim packaged as 3G you do not get 3G without getting account upgrade .
Confirmation either way will be useful ...
Unfortunately AIS website is a very good example on how to have a huge amount of content & over complex account types but absolutely no easy to find useful clear facts ...
Mister B,
1. Went to a phone shop and explained my problem. The guy there told me that he didn't think my phone was compatible with AIS' 3G band...but you have working 3G in Thailand with a T-Mobile HD2. Is your carrier TOT Mobile? Xda won't let me post outside links yet because I'm new, but I looked up the specs on the T-Mobile HD2 and on Thailand's mobile phone bands and it looks like the only carrier the T-Mobile HD2 can use 3g on is TOT Mobile (only carrier with either a 1700 or 2100 band).
2. Also, when I first got my SIM card here last year, I got a regular one, not a 3G one. The way I signed up for 3G was just by looking up and texting a code to AIS to subscribe to 3G service. I thought that was all I had to do. It seemed to work, except for only being able to get 2G. (I'm in Chiang Mai, and I know AIS has good 3G coverage here; I've experimented using my phone all over the city, but no 3G). So it looks like you're right in your last post about needing a 3G SIM card or an account upgrade.
Thanks again for your all your help. Would you mind confirming that your carrier is actually TOT Mobile? It would help me troubleshoot.
I use TOT for 3G (iKool) & DTAC for 2G Edge.
I thought AIS had license for 2100MHz 3G but if on 900MHz then will not work on AIS until upgrade there network.
Thailands 3G is a bit of a bodge effort until licensing is approved.
I would assume your current sim is not at fault & if you activated 3G via sms code it should be 3G active & just the current band being the limitation ...
How I wish 3 network would come to Thailand, their HK network is superb ...
Hi all, this is my first post or thread, i came here cause i heard from ppl this is best site for asking questions about cell phones, i started reading allot this forum and wow did i enter the other world i really like and wanna participate in.
Srry for little intro and lets get back to topic. So i got my first "normal" android and got trouble with it. I am using Samsung galaxy s5 g900F (european) factory unlocked and T-mobile as carrier with 4.4.2 kitkat. I have a big problem with a data connection that keeps going off every 30sec to 5 min if i use option to search and auttoconnect on LTE/WCDMA/GSM option. I read forum but no1 is mentioning this model as problematic 1 so now i post thread about.
Does any1 know what could be problem and how to solve it. Sometimes my data connection comes back and sometimes it doesnt and i have to switch type of network to get back again online. All other options that don't include LTE auttoconnect work just fine, i tried to get another SIM from carrier but same problem, i tried to get another Phone since i work in hardware firm and still same problem on another device, both were same models.
I still didn't put any ROMs but i really consider doing it maybe l8r on, it is stock version.
Pls be genttle since this is first time i post, maybe i did it on wrong place but i did read rules and everything and i think i did it on right place.
Ty in advance.
I did have a slightly similar problem years ago - when in roaming my phone could not connect to anything. What helped was a change of simcard for a new model - after that all was good.
Since you did try your SIM on a different phone (same 900F?) I would advise you to try: first on a completely different brand and phone model - if you can.
If this does not solve your problem do shake your service provider a bit - they could have supplied you with two faulty SIM cards in a row - that can happen. Otherwise - maybe there is a stupid limitation in your service plan which is causing this. There is no - to my knowledge - ready answer to the problem you have described.
Best of luck and if you do solve it come back and post - it will be very useful to lots of people for sure
Cheers!
Too many variables. You haven't observed enough of a pattern yet or tried enough things to narrow it down a bit. It could just as easily be carrier side issues as a bug in the firmware not negotiating a new connection if the LTE signal is lost.
A number of people were having data disconnect issues and that was addressed in the 4.4.3 /4.4.4 update. So that is one option to consider. And you could open a support ticket with your carrier. That is hit and miss as to results, but sometimes tickets actually resolve issues.
There are also a number of apps that may mitigate or possibly even solve your issue. Have a look at 4G LTE Switch and LTE Discovery.
.
Will try it today. Thanks for the help. Really appreciate it.
