unlocked G1... can anyone please confirm Cupcake - G1 General

Hi,
I have just bought and unlocked my G1 onto the UK O2 network, all working fine.
I haven't gone for root access (concerned about bricking the phone, plus I understand that paid for apps on the Market won't work).
Can anyone confirm whether I will be able to receive the forthcoming Cupcake update:
a) automatically pushed by Google servers
b) through the Market
or
c) by manually downloading (will I need to have root access?)
d) I'm stuffed
Any help will be appreciated.
Jim

Uh....with the latest jf rom(1.5 aka cupcake) paid apps do work...but I'm not sure how otas work since I never got one but you should be able to get the ota when it is pushed in your area and I don't think that there is a direct download link for the tmobile cupcake update.....yet.

Okay, to answer my own question!
I saw this over on another forum:
1. Updates are pushed out from google not from t-mobile.
2. Over The Air (OTA) updated will also work in non t-mobile networks, such as Vodaphone, O2, etc. In all countrys where G1 is official available
3. You don't need root at all to manually update:
3a. If the update file is available, rename it to update.zip
3b. save update.zip to root of sd card
3c. turn off phone
3d. restart phone by pressing On/off button and home button until yellow triangle appears
3e.press ALT+S
3f. wait....
3g. ready

So.. I'm just going to wait and see.

UnRooting the G1 for the Rogers update.

I have seen some great write ups on rooting the G1 and it worked perfectly on mine. With this new Rogers update for the 911 GPS flaw I have temporarily reenabled my data from Rogers with the "Network refresh" but I know it's only a matter of time before it dies again.
This is my work phone and I can't have loss of data so I need to do this update.
I understand you need to unroot the phone to stock for this update.
Can you point me to a successful comprehensive set of instructions to do this?
I would sincerely appreciate it as I don't want to brick the phone reverting to stock. The backup I created when I originally rooted the G1 was on my USB key which a co worker lost
Any support is appreciated!
Running Cyano 4.2.12.2
1.6 Firmware
Build DRC83
Download a 1.5 rom from Android spin or here... Install it.. same way you would do a 1.6.
Make sure your on Vista / Xp and install the HTC synch software from the rogers website and downlaod the ruu update also while your there.
Once your 1.5 rom is up and running you dont have to sign in or antyhing just synch the phone with the pc.. Run the RUU update from rogers it will wipe your phone and install 1.5 factory you lose root and your 1.6 24 hours later your data will be back
I'm looking for more details, step by step because I don't want to brick the phone... the rooting steps were finite and detailed, I know I cant just reverse the steps so I'm looking for some guidance.
What I did was that I ran the RUU wizard, then grabbed the rom.nbh file from the temp directory and put it on the root of my SD card. Then reboot in HBOOT and it applied the rogers crippled piece of **** rom.
Now I'm trying to get back to rooting it and putting Cyanogen back on. no luck so far
No one else unrooting to do the update? I thought there would be more.
I still have data but I can see it going away after another sweep by Rogers...
Don't do it.
Don't.
It's not worth it. it's just as much of a piece of **** that came with the phone. Slow and incomplete. Stick to what you have, just call those morons and convince them that you have a better rom that is not affected by the bug.
turn on your GPS and call 911 just to try it, then call rogers and tell them it works.
If you install the Rogers update there's no way out as of yet. You're stuck with it.
Think about that long and hard before you get stupid like me and apply their update. Threaten to sue them, threaten to hold back payment, but don't cave in. I did and I've been up for 2 nights trying to root it again.
So what choice do we have? Help!
I called Rogers support to have my data turned back on but they told me their system is 100% automated and will only re-enable the data when they see the right build being reported.
I don't want to get stuck with this new crappy ROM from Rogers but I don't know what else to do? I don't want to be stuck without root. Do any of the admins or uber-pros have any advice?
Please take pity on us poor Canucks with Rogers nooses tied around our necks!!
call and tell them you've had it (have the pdf from rogers update page in front of you) and say if this isn't restored you're holding back payment.
They haven't killed my data since I asked for the network refresh on Monday.
I know it will happen again though.
I just want some clear instructions to unroot is all.
If u really and badly want the rogers update do as it is below, i recomend jst wait for a few daysour devs will find out something for this issue, i did the upgarde and i lost my root, and same old PoS, without a soft keyboard
Follow The steps

[Q] Still no 2.1

I didn't receive my OTA update yet.
I live in the Netherlands and my phone was bought in Belgium (Orange)
The ROM version is 2.73.66.5
Does anyone now why I still didn't receive the OTA for 2.1?
Try changing the date forward.
Already tried that
I think there is an anycut shortcut that forces a check for update.
EDIT: or try *#*#checkin#*#* (type that in on the keypad in the phone app)
I'm assuming your version is a typo - it's probably 2.73.61.5. If so, you will need to download and apply another update from your local Orange website - version 2.73.61.66, assuming it's the same as the UK. You will (well, I did) lose everything off your phone when you flash this version, so back everything up. As soon as it finishes rebooting after the flash, it will advise you of the 'part 1' update, and following that, the full 2.1 update. Hope this helps.

"Network unavailable" on manual System update attempt

Just got my Axon 7, shipped from DE to UK, thought I'd try manual software update.
Current version listed as ZTE A2017GV1.0.0B06
It times out with Network Unavailable despite the fact it is connected to WiFi and Chrome works fine as well as everything else needing internet connections.
I am on Three UK, haven't tried updating without a SIM ... is that worth trying? I did see at initial setup I was prompted to accept some sort of 3UK profile though I assumed this is just APN/MMS stuff.
Anyone else having similar problem trying to update?
I see talk of updating to B08 etc, from 2017G --- is 2017G same as 2017GV1... wouldn't want to assume anything this early on in my game
TIA for any tips/advice.
Am really liking this phone though, might be nice to get latest update for security mainly, not sure if many features are added?
Same issue here as it happens, though I'm currently trying to update WITHOUT a sim (didn't appreciate it was nano so new one on order!).
I was thinking it maybe needed one to be present to update, but clearly that's not the case.

Can't speak to the EU version, but I was surprised when my A2017U would not complete initial setup (& update) without the SIM, although wifi was strong. All completed quickly as soon as I popped in the SIM.
Hi,
I have the same issue here.
I've just bought A2017G from Italy (Amazon) and I live in France. Can't have the upade to B08. There is always this message "No network" after a minute of searching. I tried with 4G and Wifi and there is the same issue!
Also can't connect
Same issue here. I am already on B.08 and have wifi/Sim in place.
Mysterious problem
I have tried many solutions but I wasn't able to update :
- used three different sim cards from 3 operators
- removed sim card and worked only on wifi
- used VPN
- tried to update via SD card form the update page and from recovery
... Unsuccessful !
Anyone have idea?
I'm also having the same problem. I live in Sweden and I just got the phone today. Would be nice if I could update sometime soon.
A2017g b06
Greenland here, I also have problems with the connectivity
Maybe ZTE is updating its servers so that the updates can finally deploy at the same time, the same version, for everyone.
Or, maybe... they are silently getting rid of Adups and moving to another kind of upload process, before **** hits the proverbial fan.
Also, Global Axon 7 here, brought via Amazon.es, sent from Germany and now used across Portugal/Spain. Running 0B08.

I can understand that, but even if we put the B08 update file downloaded from ZTE support in SD card, the update can't be processed.
Hello, I had the same problem, I reinitialized the Axon 7, and I copied the file update.zip B09 on the phone, it recognized and installed the file (I was on the b08 before)
Hallo, i have the same problem with update, I have B06, somebody can give me a link to download the latest firmware and how to install it.

Solution found!
I’ve already found the solution for the manual upadate from SD card and it’s easy to do.
Theses instructions are not mine and I’m not responsible of what you do with your phone. I found them inside the update file that I Downloaded then I unzipped.
You will find a PDF document called “ZTE A2017G Upgrade Guide (through an SD Card).pdf”. You can use it to do the upgrade step by step.
Till now, all was OKEY: backup is very quickly with Zte app. The update take about 5 minutes, than the phone restarts automatically.
If you cannot find the B08 update file, try to download it from here: http://www.ztedevice.com/support/detail?id=98CEB24F9FFD433EA99EC424163149A6
Here are the steps (exactly as mentioned in ZTE Upgrade Guide)
ZTE V7 Upgrade Guide (Through an SD Card)
1. Backing Up the Data
1) Download the upgrade package.
Open http://www.ztedevice.com.cn/support and download the upgrade package (update.zip) that matches your phone model. If the downloaded package is not update.zip, unzip the package to obtain update.zip.
Ensure that your micro SD card is at least 3GB.
2) Remove the SIM card before the upgrade. Back up the data and APPs in your phone by using the built-in Backup function. To enable the built-in Backup function of your phone (an SD card must be inserted), select
Backup and Restore from the main menu。
3) Perform data backup.
Note:
You should not remove the SD card during the backup process. To avoid data lost, it is not recommended to cancel the backup process.
4) Verify that the update.zip file in the root directory of the SD card
matches the model of the phone. Do not modify the file name and extension name of the files in the upgrade package.
5) Verify that your phone has enough (at least 30%) power. Charge the phone if required. To avoid data lost or upgrade failure, it is not recommended to upgrade your phone through an SD card when the phone is being charged.
Note:
You should not perform any other operation on the phone during the upgrade process. To avoid upgrade failure, do not forcibly remove the battery.
A normal upgrade should be completed in 2-3 minutes. If the phone does not reboot or show any response in three minutes, you should perform the upgrade process again. If the phone cannot be started, perform a forced upgrade. If the forced upgrade does not work, you should contact an after-sale service agent for support.
2. Upgrade Description
There are two upgrade methods: normal upgrade and forced upgrade.
If the phone cannot be started properly, for example, the phone cannot be started, or the phone does not enter stand-by state, perform a forced upgrade. If the phone can be started properly and the Settings menu can be selected, perform a normal upgrade.
3. Upgrade Steps
A. Normal upgrade (the primary upgrade method)
1) Download the upgrade package that matches the phone model from ZTE official website (http://www.ztedevice.com.cn/support/), extract update.zip from the package, and copy update.zip to the root directory of the SD card (the file name must be update.zip
2) Select System Manager > File Manager> SD Card from the main menu, and verify that the update.zip file in the root directory of the SD card is proper.
3) Tap the main screen is displayed. Tap and select SETTINGS >All setting > Updates>,
4) Click INSTALL, The phone automatically powers off and reboots. the SD
card upgrade screen is displayed,
After the phone is upgraded, it is rebooted again. After the phone starts properly, it is recommended to manually restore the phone to its original factory default settings. The phone is upgraded properly and can be used.
B. Forced upgrade (for the phones that cannot be started or the phones that cannot enter standby state)
1) For a powered-off phone, press and hold both the volume key + and power
key to enter into Recovery mode.
2) Press the volume key - to select apply update from sdcard, and press the power key to confirm it.
3) Press the volume key - to select the update.zip file, and press the power key to confirm it. The phone completes the upgrade process in about three minutes.
4) On the Upgrade Complete screen, select reboot system now and press the power key to confirm it.
4. (Optional) Restoring the Data
If you have backed up data before upgrading your phone, restore the data.
1) Backup and Restore important user information.
2) Perform data restoration.
Note:
Do not remove the SD card during the restoration process. To avoid data lost, it is not recommended to cancel the restoration process.

The file is on ztedevice (link in thread) but i think (as some of other users) that this patch is only for Spain - don't know that for 100% but most ppl that can upadate it with OTA are located in Spain. Also I still get "network unavailable" when I trying to check update (location Poland, phone from UK). But you should can update from B06 to B08 as I can without any doubts via OTA.

AT&T in Australia

Hi all,
Was recently in the 'States and broke my S8 - it's now the third mobile screen I've busted since Samsung brought in curved edges, never had any issues with the S2 or S5 - who ever thought tempering glass and curving it would be a good idea??
Anyway I had the opportunity to pickup a brand new Samsung Galaxy S8 Active and did a quick bit of research. I found the most compatible version with my carriers back home in AUS was the SM-G892A from AT&T. Picked up a brand new unlocked model, stupid me didn't connect it up to AT&T while I was there. I turned it on and played around with it on Wifi for the last few days of our trip and returned home to Melbourne.
Basically I now understand AT&T are a bunch of ***** and do not allow updates to be pushed even for unlocked devices overseas. Considering a lot of the updates are for security I'm very surprised by this.
Anyway so I've notcied a few tiny bugs here and there with apps/OS and figured updating my device/OS is the way to go and might resolve the issues. I guess the easiest way to get the info I need is to put the questions I have individually, as my mind tends to jump all over the place when I'm working a problem:
1. Is there any way to get my phone updated without rooting/flashing the phone?
2. If not, what is the best option for a S8 Active? Are there any firmware versions that will enable OTA updates so I don't need to keep flashing everytime new firmware is released? I have seen some posts about T-Mobile being able to be flashed over an AT&T model or even the G892U or maybe a custom firmware that allows this?
3. Will rooting/flashing interfere with any of the carrier settings etc? Don't want to upgrade it only to find it disables an LTE band or something?
4. I am an absolute noob at flashing, have never done it but am pretty tech savvy so if there is a step-by-step procedure I wil have no dramas following it. Saying that, I would rather not make the device worse than it is so I only want to follow tried & tested procedures if that makes sense, I don't want my device to be a lab-rat.
5. If there is no way to enable OTA internationally as per Question #2 when new firmware updates become available on XDA will flashing a new update delete personalisation/settings/files etc? Or will it retain them and update like a stock model performing a firmware upgrade would? If not, that would be a pain in the ass and time consuming to have to re-apply settings and reinstall apps every time and almost makes the idea of flashing unattractive.
6. I have baseband G892AUCU1AQG4 - taking into account Question #2 what is the best way to move forward? Considering Android 8.0 is available for the S8 Active and has been available for my model from AT&T since March 1st, 2018 apparently I'm hoping there might be some way to move towards that.
Hope someone might be able to help,
Thanks in advance
UPDATE 05/05/2019
Got some answers to my original questions...
1. Rooting/Flashing are different things - rooting allows custom firmware, flashing is the procedure to install custom or OEM firmware onto the device.
2. The best option for me I think is to just update to newer AT&T firmware so I get the updates and new software features as I'm not interested in custom firmware. I still do not know if it is possible to get OTA updates for this device directly from Samsung/Google.
3. As long as you are flashing from the same model firmware as in SM-G892A to SM-G892A should be no issues, however using SM-G892U might cause issues.
4. Once I wrapped my head around how baseband versions of firmware work and what is needed to get between bootloader versions flashing from SD Card or Odin (as I suspected) was very straightforward thanks to some of the guides out there. To make this easier for anyone facing the same issue I have written how I did this below.
5. Yes, flashing for AT&T will delete everything, it's an absolute PIA and that's why I will keep searching for a way to get OTA updates enabled if at all possible. However I believe Samsung SmartSwitch is pretty good for backing up and restoring so that might be a simple way forward.
6. See my latest post, I was 12 updates behind but able to skip 7 of them using my method.
I'm considering importing an S8 Active AT&T and have the same questions. How did you go?

Sorry for the slow reply I've only just had the time to dive into this. Yes I have figured it out.
There are two ways, incrementally update by applying OTA updates via the SD card. However trying to find all of these can be a pain.
The other way you may have read about is to use Samsung's own 'Odin' flashing software.
Because I had the very first baseband version G892AUCU1AQG4 I was way behind. The fifth-last digit designates the bootloader version, you cannot jump from v1 to v3 for example. So what you can do is use a few OTA updates to jump you from v1 to the first v2, you can then use Odin to jump you all the way up and use another OTA to get you to the next bootloader version. Hope that makes sense?
So I was able to use x2 OTA updates to get from 1AQG4 to 1AQJ2, then I was able to do one more OTA to get from 1AQJ2-to-2AQK3. Now if I was to continue using the OTA method with the SD card, I would need to run the process x8 times. This presents 3 issues:
1. Time consuming, trying to find all the correct OTA updates.
2. Even when you do get all the correct OTA updates you then have to copy each on to the SD card waiting for the phone to update and then repeat the process.
3. Even if you can find a link for a required OTA update a lot of the links are dead.
However using Odin and the flash files I was able to skip these and go directly from 2AQK3 to 2BRF2, use one OTA update and then I was onto Bootloader v3 (which is the latest version). Here is how I compressed 12 updates do into 5, good luck..
1. 1AQG4-to-1AQJ2 OTA (SD CARD): dropbox.com/s/ikor71zt1ec0nyn/SS-G892AUCU1AQG4-to-S1AQJ2.zip?dl=0
2. 1AQJ2-to-2AQK3 OTA (SD CARD): dropbox.com/s/ott9fs9qunkvf9x/SS-G892AUCS1AQJ2-to-U2AQK3.zip?dl=0
3. 2AQK3-to-2BRF2 Odin Flash : androidfilehost.com/?fid=1322778262904016415
4. 2BRF2-to-3BRG1 OTA (SD CARD): androidfilehost.com/?fid=1322778262904016441
5. 3BRG1-to-3BRL1 Odin Flash: mega.nz/#!7M42VCAJ!-FKnhzwTZG0He1kb9FzHHaPX4Aanlnj4fpn0M61DzR4
Have the s8 active outside of America and desperately want to update it
Hey ,
I'm sorry to bring up this old thread but I didn't really understand the method you used sorry I'm really new to this thing, I have the s8 active Sm-g892A ( the att) model it's on the baseband version G892AUCS2ARB1 . If you could help me out a bit with this I would be really grateful, having Android 7.0 really makes me concerned as I've heard the security patches also won't update.

So you are on Bootloader v2 (5th character from the right). So you can skip straight to Step 3. Be warned all instructions below will result in all data on your device being wiped!
Using Odin to upgrade as directed on Step 3 & 5 or future upgrades (there is now v4 software appearing):
You need to download Odin (you don't need a modified/Comsy version).
You need to enable Developer Options on your Galaxy.
Once you have developer options you need to enable 'USB Debugging'.
You need to shutdown your Galaxy.
Connect your USB cabble to your PC.
Boot into Download mode by using the Power+Bixby+Volume Down combo. OR if that doesn't work Use the Power+Bixby+Volume Up and use the menu to get into Download Mode.
Open Odin on your PC, it should say 'Added' if it detects your Galaxy correctly. If it doesn't you may need to install some USB drivers (you can Google how to do this).
Once it says 'Added' you can add the files from Step 3 and flash but be warned it will wipe everything on your device.
For Step 4 OTA:
Very simply download the ZIP file and place the complete ZIP file on an SD Card (it should not be extracted must be complete ZIP archive). Place the SD Card in the Galaxy, power off and boot into Recovery Mode Power+Bixby+Volume Up. Then simply use the Volume Up/Down and Power keys to navigate through, 'Apply Update from SD Card', find your SD card and the ZIP file and allow the update to run.

Downgrade question - possible upgrade upon restart?

Hey all,
I am very much willing to wipe my phone to do a downgrade.
I have the OP8 Pro, unrooted (never rooted/never unlocked bootloader).
The scenario I see is - I downgrade my phone to 10.15.13 (I have the INAA modell). I'm sure at some point the phone will check for an OTA.
My question - Is it all possible for the phone to upgrade itself if it restarts?
Meaning, is there a time limit that the update is sitting in the queue waiting for the user to press reboot to install? Or can I just somehow figure out a way to silence the system notification of an update pending?
Not sure if that makes sense but my hope is to just go back to 10 and enjoy certain things that just worked out better for me unrooted vs 11 unrooted until some things are ironed out.
Thanks for your time.
No you would need to initialise the upgrade, unless you have automatic updates on.
You would have seen the initial installation begin.
Least that's my experience of it. The update is stored on the phone so you may also be able to delete it.
Turn off automatically download updates.
I downgraded using the special firmware I found (couldn't find official to do it ) and then installed the official EU/UK firmware straight after with no problem
