Hi,
When I wants to use wifi I have to turn on WIFI in comm manager, go to setting, go to connection, go to advanced and select network: work network. If I wants to go back to HSDPA I have to go with the same route to set things back.
Are there any apps to make this easier, by means only two icons to set WIFI or HSDPA without performing the steps discribed above?
Thank you

Is it possible to setup the 8525 so that it only connects to internet through Wi-Fi and not any of the other options? Based on some threads, it looked like Cingular has disabled this option, but I am not quite sure. Thanks.
The only way I was able to do it was to call Cingular Tech and have them disable the GPRS on their end, now if I go to PIE and the WiFi is off, the GPRS/EDGE Connection pop-up opens, then I get an error message saying the network could not be found and a dismiss icon....
The only way it will connect to IE is through WiFi now.

if you go to settings then connection and delete the connection settings for gprs it will not connect and you can use wifi only
however i seem to keep getting gprs not connected error if i do so?
I'm having the same problem. I'm totally green to the high tech world. Heck this is my first attempt at anything greater than using my calculator function in a phone So if someone could walk me through what I need to do to set my phone up so I can connet through wifi i would reaaaally appreciate it.
I had Cingular put me on the no data plan (not even pay per use). In case that makes a difference.
Thanks in advance for the help.
All I did was go in to the connection settings and change the User name and Password. I do not get any error messages stating the network cannot be found. I get a login screen with User/Pass and Domain. I just click cancel and it drops back to IE.
Now I do not have to worry about accidentally connecting to their service.
well,we can very much achieve it -- In the internet settings in connections, select both of them to My ISP,edit it to nowap.cingular.com
Make sure setting is set to Internet, not work!
I did it and I use only wifi all the time!!
The previous solutions are not really workable for me since I don't want to delete my cellular data connection, I just want to be able to turn it on and off as I choose. With Windows Live, I can have a Wifi connection and turn off cellular data in the comm manager screen and it will just open the cellular connection again.
A hack to turn off the "auto connect" for the cellular data would be great. Make it like the BT or WIFI, where I have to go to the comm screen and turn it on. That choice would be great.
Anyhow, I am thinking of making the Work connection as the default, then deleting all work connections. Then when I actually want a cellular data connection, I could manually select it and say connect. I'm not sure if the applications will close it and try the work connection again or not. I will try it and post again, probably tomorrow.

This works wonders:

ETA: This is what I have been using to deal with gprs autoconnect on my 8525 and it's perfect for my uses. You just start the program and toggle on or off the data connections.
Gprs Disable
It really works thanks for your research

Kayzee,
This is caused by your Internet settings.
1. Go to Programs/settings/all settings ( choose it from the menu on the bottom right corner ).
2. Tap Connections, within that tap once more Connections
3. Tap Advanced, than Select Networks
4. Under "Programs that automatically connect..", select My work Network instead of the mobile connection and tap OK.
From now on, it will never start data connection when trying to go to Internet, but you can always start it manually from the Comm manager.
I hope it helps, good luck !
If you search the forum, you'll find quite a few of solutions. But what works for me are:
1) BsB Tweaks - use it to disable the "data connection" (3G)
2) WiFi Toggle - use it to toggle the WiFi on & off
In "data services" turn everything to manual update, e.g tweeter, stocks, ...
Keeping the wifi on constantly doesn't actually consume much battery life and it's only the 3G really sucks the battery juice.

This doesn't work. Every time I check the Internet connection by loading a random webpage via the sense UI it still has an Internet connection, even if I doublechecked before to see if the Internet connection setting were off. This is frustrating

just uncheck the "auto download " option in weather tab in tf3d
This is not about HOW TO DISABLE the data connection: I know there are plenty of ways and apps to do that, even automatically.
As regards me I have two manual options to do that on my phone:
1. In the Comm manager, under Wireless Controls, I have 3G on/off option, which I can use to switch between 3G and 2G network
2. ModaCo NoData, which I can use to ENABLE/DISABLE my "H3G Internet" data connection
My questions are:
a] do I have to use both?
b] if either one is enough, which one is the best (or: what is the difference between the two)?
Thanks
I believe if you are on the 2G network, you can still connect to the internet via GPRS?

This does what it says, switches your phone from 3G/2G networks to 2G only. But in both cases your phone can place a data connection, only it will be slower when on 2G (GPRS/EDGE).
To disable the connection, you need to use nodata. The other option does nothing in this regard.
So in the end your question still actually was about how to disable
Fine understood
New question then: considering that I have automatic wetaher/location/facebook.pushmail active, if I disable data connection at night and in the office, would this save battery life?
Most likely a little, yes. But data connection barely uses anything when idle, so you save the little amount of traffic that takes place from the updates. And the phone will still wake up at the update intervals to try and connect, which drains pretty much the same as the connection itself.
Hi,
I am trying to figure out the different options in:
Settings => connections => advanced => select network.
What i want to do is keep wifi and data both on, so that when i open the phone from standby wifi would work in my house for data and when i head out 3G would take over the data, also when my phone is in standby mode and i have scheduled it to download my email, it should do it in standby mode via 3G or wifi without me manually tweaking the settings or manually downloading the email.
Right now, the upper option in set to T-mobile data and the lower option is set to "My work network".
please let me know,
i am sure alot of you already know the answer but i am not sure of the options.
Thanks alot in advance
Here is the way to set Sprint Galaxy Tab to wi-fi only. This works with both rooted and unrooted tabs but rooted is way better because of titanium backup. Batch backup everything with titanium backup. Then go to SETTINGS/PRIVACY and erase all data. Follow all prompts and reset device. When device resets and comes to first screen about keyboard, skip this step and when you get to Sprint and Wi-Fi : Wi-Fi only set to Wi-Fi only!!! (Very Important Step). Continue through setup of phone if desired. If you use titanium backup, (Important Step) restore missing apps and data but NOT ANY SYSTEM DATA!!! Reconfigure apps and good to go. Remember, Pick Wi-Fi only and NOT Wi-Fi and 3g.. Also remember if using titanium backup to NOT RESTORE ANY SYSTEM DATA, only missing apps and data. Tested and works great.I use Mobile Hotspot from Evo to power Galaxy Tab and $30 dollars for Hotspot unlimited on 4G AND 3G makes capped 3G on Tab useless. I hope this helps...

Why not just set it to Airplane mode first, then go to menu, settings, wireless and networks and just turn on only WiFI???

I set to airplane mode, then went to menu, settings, wireless and networks and checked wi-fi. Problem was, when you left the range of your router, it would automatically switch to 3g so that you can have continous connection and that was the function that I wanted to disable. This was something I noticed and it all started with the initial device setup which gave you the option of totally disabling 3g on the device. That way, it either runs on my router at home or from my Evo as a hotspot and not the 2gb capped Sprint service included.

I found the setting to turn on or off 3g. Settings/Wireless and networks/mobile networks/ and uncheck use packet data. Thanks for the information. Really helpful.
Long press the power button and deactivate data. Then turn on airplane mode. Then turn on wifi. Voila - no extra costs and better battery!
a ton of apps out there to do this too. apn on-off looks like a nice widget to give you one touch quick control.
this is not the same thing - editing the apn does not turn off the radio, only stops it from finding any network to connect to
airplane mode will literally switch the radio off, saving you battery and removing the cell signal notifier from the taskbar
