Is there any reason.... - G1 General

OK, so I got a G1 and my plan was to root, etc. right out of the box (being a long time WM user, this sort of thing has become my standard =) ). I have quite a few microSD's laying around so I thought I would just use one of them. After looking i see that the fastest i have is class 4. I see many recommending class 6. My question is this: Is it worth trying to do any of this on a class 4 card or would I be better off just waiting until I have a class 6 card in hand?

I experienced a lot of lag issues when I was using my class 4. Since switching to a class 6 8gb card, it has run as smooth as it did when it came out of the box.

I moved the cache on a class 4 card and I didn't notice a lag so far. But on the other side I don't have a comparison. So, maybe my experience would be far better with a class 6 card.

i moved my apps to my class 4 PNY 4gig sd card and i haven't noticed any lag, i plan on getting a class 6 soon to compare, but on my class 4 the apps moved i have little to no lag. on the other hand when i moved my cache as well there was all kinds of lag, it took the phone 45 seconds to open an email in the gmail app. just saying

That's my worry..I want to move it all there. Right now the phone is quick but I imagine over time, with all that data, it starts to slow (probably sooner rather than later for a heavy user)
Maybe it's just my habit as I always try to run as much as possible from cards (when possible) in order to save the internal for things that really need it while keeping everything working at an optimal rate.

Might as well get a class 6. No reason not to as they are dirt cheap.

Data does not cause slowness. Running processes cause slowness, and this is under the control of the amount of memory available, the garbage collector, and what applications you choose to run.

The Big Deal With SD Class....

So whats the big deal with the Class of SD cards...
I have read here and other places about not being able to use anything below Class 6.
If I understand correctly a Class 2 writes at 2mb/s, Class 3 writes at 3 mb/s, Class 4 writes at 4 mb/s..and so on up to Class 6....
So i understand that everyone is basically saying you need to be able to write at 6 mb/s....why is this and why cant I use my 4GB Class 2 Sdhc card to store caches and/or apps....I paid $7 for my 4GB card but didnt pay attention to the Class because i didnt think it would matter...
Thanks...
From what I understand you should be fine using it to move apps to the card. People say if you move data or cache you will experience a slowdown. Id say try it if you want, at worst you just undo the data/cache.
I tried using a brand new 4g class 2 card, and massive failure. I purchased an 8g class 6 on newegg.com for $17 shipped and the same install worked perfectly. My g1 now has 250+ apps and runs just fine with 40+mb free space on device (I left my data on there)
Apparently a good Class 4 card is good enough, but to be sure you really should go with a Class 6 one, or you might experience a lot of lag.
My class 2 all I did was run the apps off the card everything seemed to go good and then I wasn't able to update themes anymore any theme I tried to update said bad and would abort. And then my phone began to freeze all the time and apps began to force close or not ever launch. It work great for about a week and then all that started to happen. I picked up newegg the 8gb class6 about 2 weeks ago and have since to have a problem!
i have an 8gig class 4 and when i moved apps to the sd card my G1 became really sloooooooooooooow. apps took a while to open, and when i was finished with an app and hit the "back" arrow or the home button it would take 3-4 seconds for the home screen icons to show up. it was quite annoying.
i have gone back to running the apps from the internal memory and i'm back to top speed. i'll probably try again with a class 6 sometime soon.
well thanks...I will make sure to buy a Class 6 than...didnt think it was a big deal and couldnt find any others who did fine with other classes...

One GREAT WAY to speed HD2 PERFORMANCE

I created videos showing the dramatic difference (before vs. after) but then realized this site does not allow me to upload videos (and I am too lazy to set up a utube account).
The 16GB Micro SDHC card that comes with the T-Mobile HTC HD2 is only Class 2 and is a very SLOOOOOWWW card (also class 2 cards are CHEAP, that is why it is INCLUDED FREE). If you watch the Transformer movies installed on that card you will discover there are a few times during the movies where the screen momentarily freezes. Also if you have alot of songs on the card, when you scroll over to the media player you will see it takes forever for the media player tab (about 45 seconds) to display anything. Even a game that comes with the unit repeatedly freezes and is not playable because of the speed of the card - under games, try the game called "Ferrari GT Evolution". It is a great game but it is unplayable on that card.
I purchased a 16GB Class 6 Micro SDHC Card and it came today. I copied everything from the old card to the new card. WOW, WHAT A DIFFERENCE! It is about $60 but is makes a VERY big difference in performance for everything mentioned above. For instance, the Ferrari game mentioned above does not freeze at all (and loads much faster) and also when I scroll over to the media play tab the delay before that tab becomes useable is only about 3 seconds.
If you want a SAFE great way to really improve the performance of your unit, replace the old crappy Class 2 Micro SDHC card with a Class 6 version. WOW.
(BTW, my main reason for getting this card was also that it took too long to take a photo and then to be able to take another one immediately afterwards. Now that is MUCH faster as well. A workaround would be to not use the card for picture storage but I prefer to put them on the card.)
I have been using a 4GB class 6 card I had laying around and I have seen a difference as well. I copied all the data from the 16GB card to my computer then copied it to the 4GB card to start out with. I saw a big improvement in the momentary freezes that occur when navigating the UI, music indexing and video playback. After using that card for a couple weeks I copied everything back to the 16GB card after formatting it and popped it back in to see if it was a placebo effect. Things were noticeably different, it just felt more sluggish at times. The Class 2 card isn't bad and it isn't the whole problem but getting a better card does change things a bit.
I did pick up a couple 8GB class 6 Sandisk cards for about $10 not to long ago for my camera. The 16GB and 32GB cards aren't as economical yet. The improvement is worth $10-$20 dollars to me but not $60.

It'll be printed right on the front of the card...a little number inside of a circle. If you dont see one there, odds are it's a class-2

Class 6 vs 2 Photo... (Micro SDHC Card)
There is no such thing as a Class 10
Look at the photo (CLICK ON THE PHOTO TO ENLARGE IT AND SEE THE DIFFERENCE) FOR THE Speed Class Designation. I guess the standard spec does not say which way is right-side up for printed labels!
Class 6 is the highest speed currently. There are 32GB cards out there (which the unit can support) but they are VERY expensive. The Class 6 card I bought was somehyting like $60 with the shipping from Newegg.com.
Also notice that it is such a damned nightmare to be able to read these ever so tinier labels on everything out there! (Or maybe it's also because of my age.)
It is true, also, that those without the class specification are much older - and slower, I guess they should all be lumped in presumably with class 2

$100...Hope they become cheaper!
thanks for this thread... i totally didn't realize there were speed diffs on microSD cards.
so a few questions then:
1. the new 32GB sandisk microSD is only class 2... i assume no other manufactures are out yet, especially with a class 6 or 10. this is the very end of the SDHC standard. the next upgrade will be all SDXCs.
2. will a class10 be better than a class 6? i always thought that there are spec. limitations to SD card readers itself. does anyone know what the max limit of the HD2 SD card reader is? class 6 or 10? because if it's class 6, then buying a class 10 would be useless.
i remember that older SD card readers can't read the SDHCs.

1. I haven't seen any class 6 32gig cards but there will be some eventually.
2. Technically class 10 is faster than class 6 but unless you run everything off your sdcard and have a ton of music/video I doubt it would be worth it. If you were going to be using a 32gig card then a class 10 would probably be worth it, though I don't know if the HD2 supports that speed.

Thanks for the "usual" lolol...
To be honest I've got the class 10 Panasonic, and a class 6 Kingston, (both 16gb [32gb models are ridiculously expensive]) and when you run them side-by-side in a phone, there really isn't a difference in everyday use that I can tell. Class 6 is plenty fast for a phone. But there's always people like me in the world who aren't afraid to fork over the extra money to see if the latest tech will get me a little extra speed.
For those on the ropes as to what to get: if your just listening to music, Class 2 is good; for video, class 4 is good; if your non-stop music and video all day everyday work and play, and have some extra cash Class 6 rocks.
For all of you nut jobs like me who care about the extra microseconds of speed, lolololol, and have the money to spend...get the Class 10...
~Jasecloud4
the first thing i did for my hd2 was upgrade to a class 6 from previous experience with rooted android handsets (where upgrade to class 6 is always recommended
would a class 10 or a class 6 improve battery life?
Thanks for the thread and the informative posts, I guess I will make sure to get at least a class 6 for my media heavy device.

I would just stick with sandisk or kingston anyway, they're both as reliable as any, and usually priced right along the lesser-known maufacturers.
So for anyone who has used both a class 6 and class 10 card IN THE HD2, is there a speed difference? I have a paypal coupon code that is good for 25% off, and am eyeing some of the class 10 kingston cards on ebay which would come out to about $74 with this coupon code. Not very much more than a class 6, course i could just use the coupon code for a class 6 off ebay too. I would like to go the 32gb route, but seems everything 32gb is class 2 =(

Is a Class2 SD card sufficient for running Android?

Hi all,
I'm going to finally have some spare time this weekend and might even get to have a mess around with Android on my HD2 if I get lucky! My concern is that I have a 16GB Class2 microSD in my Leo and while looking at HD2 stuff on ebay came across this.
The seller states that Android won't run (properly?) on his 16gb Class2 and includes a Class6 8gb card aswell for this purpose.
What's everyone's experience with running Android on a slower card? From looking around I've seen people saying 'there isn't much difference' for most things but a lot of contridictions for others.
Thanks gang!
I have no issues with my Android build currently, and it's on a 4gb Class 2 SD card.
It does help having a faster one, but It's not the end of the world.
Phil
Have been testing out froyostone sense build on a 2gb class 2 card and it's like lightening So yes, would format first though otherwise you will get lag.
Cheers - yep I won't forget to format, been reading the threads while working this week... taken in loads of info, just need to find the time to actually get it rolling
I was wondering the same thing. I installed froyostone 08.07.2010 using miri Rom on stock radio on a friends hd2 and it freezes and comes back to life very often. Would a higher class sdcard solve his problem?
I think they guy on eBay is talking rubbish. I run darkstone's 2.2 perfectly well on a 16GB Class 2. A Class 4 would probably help a little bit, but I'm not that fussed really.
I'd be more concerned about getting dodgy copies of Transformers from them!!

i never had issues with a class 2 before... no SOD or anything... although after switching to class 4, there is noticeable speed. now in class 10, a lot faster. but no real issues in class 2 except a tad slower (but decent speed nonetheless)
I use the 16gb class 2 card and its quick with decent quadrant tests. I think its because android loads into ram (please correct me if I am wrong, ill search for this later). I think there are apps that read or write to folders on the SD card that would gain from speed of a class 6 or 10 card and if I am right about loading to ram the boot up time could receive a benefit.
Personally I am looking to get one just to access media faster and for taking pics and vids as there is a write delay that's typical with all phones. If it helps android in its current state the cool but I'm not in a rush. Development here have made great strides in making android snappy and android is an awesome is as it is for handling background tasks. Much to the credit of Linux but I find android to be a faster evolution then most mobile oses. Much to the credit of being open source and encourage community development. Nothing here is illegal but maybe some grey areas in closed source distributing which cyanogen had an interesting situation that was resolved quickly with Google's assistance.
But I am off topic now. Yes it would help with some things but don't break the piggy bank over it.
Hope my thoughts are helpful. It would be better to get feedback from those that have done it and get before and after boot, quad, and market download responsiveness tests. I may have a class 6 8gb card somewhere I can test later tonight. I would do fresh sdformatter formats with nothing but android on the card to get a somewhat standard benchmark.

You have experience with your G1, the class 6 I use on mine makes definite difference when running apps from your sd card. I've been alternating using my 16 GB Class 2 and my 8 GB Class 6 in my HD2 but I haven't seen any speed difference with android so I believe that it runs on the internal ram.

Touch Screen lag/freezing is a known issue right now and doesn't relate to the SD card.
It's being worked on.

I have a class 2 16GB sandisk drive and score 1578 in quadrant standard, that said i usually get write speeds of around 6MB/sec on my computer
i personally think it helps a bit ( i ws previously running Android off the 16GB class 2 card the HD2 came with) but experienced some lag when scrolling.
That said, it was an early build of Android so it was probably just that.
The thing is, 8GB class6 cards are relatively cheap to buy (i picked up an A-DATA 8GB class 6 for $21 canadian at CanadaComputers)
so..why not upgrade to the class6 card? I'm sure it wouldn't hurt and no matter what you'll experience at least have SOME sort of performance gain in other aspects (music, pictures, file managers, etc)

SD read/write speed causing lag on my HD2 but...

So I downloaded this app call H2testw.exe to test for legit sdcards but it also tells the read/write speed as well. I am testing my 8gb and 1gb cards. I set it to write a 300 mb files to the card and verify it.
Info about Android running on the two cards:
8gb = lags coming out of sleep, touch screen freezes, write~7.5 mb/s, read~12mb/s
1gb = no lags, no touch screen, write~4.3mb, read~13mb/s
I'm confused. The read speed is almost the same yet the 1gb microsd is more responsive running MDJ android compared to the 8gb microsd. Any thought?
UPDATE: Maybe this is what's causing the problem. Stolen from Engadget.
What we've learned from our tipsters and from documents culled from Microsoft, Samsung, and others is that the big issue is random access performance -- a figure that isn't taken into account in a card's class rating. Ironically, Microsoft discovered in its testing that cards with higher class ratings actually performed worse on Windows Phone 7 because the tweaks card manufacturers make to achieve high sequential throughput can actually hurt random access times. There's some rocket science involved here, but basically, it's a tradeoff and a bit of a gamble -- if a manufacturer tunes a card for a high class rating, it takes more time to access the first byte at a new location on the card because it's optimizing access for that area of memory, but once it does that, it can blast sequential bytes at very high speed. If you've got a lot of small reads or writes you need to make to different files at different locations in the card's memory, though, you really start to suffer. Cards with lower class ratings tend to spend less time optimizing sequential access prior to the first read / write operation, so it can move around the card (that is, access it randomly) much faster.

all sd cards are not created equal. all sd cards of the same CLASS are not created equal.
Check out the ongoing drama with win7 phones with SD slots....
class measures throughput, what affects the SOD and related issues is random access speed, not throughput so much.
It's just my 2 cents, but I've tested Class 2, 4, and 6 MicroSDHC cards and found very little noticeable difference once Android is fully booted up and running on the HD2. Moreover, none of the cards create screen freezes or SOD issues or high battery drain problems here. That said, I have noticed that the actual boot time and file transfer speed (from the PC to the card) can be faster on average with quality higher class rated cards of the same size. Also, I've found that the larger the card size, the longer the android boot time, no matter the class. Guess that makes sense, as the system need to read more sectors with larger size cards. Please note that I've only tested Sandisk, Toshiba, TopRam and Samsung cards to date. What's kind of strange is that the Class 2 16 & 32GB Sandisk cards run just as well or slightly better for some reason than some of my higher class rated cards. Go figure...
As far as issues go, I recommend only using quality brand name cards, no ebay fakes or cheap no name brands. Also, I've had great luck formatting all my cards with SD Formatter v2.0 and v3.0, using the quick format mode with the standard 32kb cluster size.
Best to all,

No, not on the sd but radio does effect how the build will run, your phone calls, your battery.
Could this be the reason why class don't matter on hd2 android? I mean even some class 4 & 6 have lag and sod problem. I pulled this bit from engadget. It's an article on wp7 and memory card issues.

[Q] SD Card Class Question

Ok.... So I have a 32gb Class 4 SD Card. When I went from the stock 16 class 6 card I noticed a speed difference... And well.. It has finally got to me... I am looking at going class 10 but I am wondering if anyone has done an upgrade like this and has any input.
I understand the class number is directly related to the speed in mbps but I guess what I am really curious about is will the epic write/read the card at faster speeds (than 6 [which is stock]) reducing my lag spikes in applications, pictures (taking and viewing), and in gallery 3d(While creating thumbnails [I have noticed this has slowed down the MOST])
For anyone who is interested I am looking at getting this SD card (Please note that I have nothing to do with this seller on amazon and am purely asking for opinions)...
amazon /Patriot-Signature-MicroSDHC-Memory-PSF32GMCSDHC10/dp/B004H8FTCU <----- Insert .com
Again I do know the pure fact that a class 10 offers more speed than class 6 and 4 but is the epic capable of using that speed?
Thanks in advance!
I don't know if our hardware will push the speeds of a class 10, that's not saying you cant use it, just saying you likely won't get those speeds out of it. Most of the time you can't get that much out of one even if the hardware will support it. I'd be willing to be 60% of cards out there are over classed or numbers are inflated from actual production chips.
"Stock card" was a Class 6? My launch day Epic came with a Class 2...

My 3 month old Epic also came with a Class 2. LOL - popping it out with the phone running caused my Phone to reboot (Bonsai).

Yes. Our hardware can. I have done tests transferring files from my computer to the USB card via my phone and it is extremely fast. Camra speed has also dramatically increased if you are taking HD photos. Camcorder speed also increased. But I was going from a stock class 2 16gb that came with the phone to a class 10... So coming from a Class 6, I dunno how much of an increase that would be.
