You can access the SD-card on WM-side when Vista is running through a network share. (Or a shared folder on your HD)
However, SD access is ONLY available when the X86 side of the shift is running.
Check out this thread for details.

Swap out microdrive?

Is it possible to crack open the Athena and replace the crap-tacular microdrive with, say, a 16GB compact flash card? I know that flash only has so many write/re-writes, but I'd fancy having a large storage space to keep music that won't change much.
What d'ya think?

Not a great start to your xda-devs life. Rather than starting a new thread try the button marked search (or you could even google xda-devs) and you might have come across this 5 page long discussion: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=306239
While you're at it, please also read this: READ THIS BEFORE POSTING (the give-away is in the title).
Excuse me, not a n00b here. I did in fact search first. Why would I go out of my way to type a question that someone may or may not have an answer to if I could find the answer with a search?
When I ran a search, it didn't bring up the thread you linked to, but nevertheless thanks for all your good-natured help.

New to everything regarding PDA and XDA (looking for noob friends ;) )

Hi all,
Yeeeah, so the Leo was finally announced at the major/best 3G network in Denmark, the worldwide operator "3". And thats awesome, so of course I hit my wallet and cashed out and got the phone yesterday. Brilliant.
Got the phone in my hand, my god, its beautiful and all, its my first PDA phone so I'm very noobish and overwhelmed by everything, but I'm lovin' it so far! Okay, well I started looking around on the big www and came across this fantastic site and now I'm thinking, I wanna get involved with this shizzle and start cooking - or at least start looking at the menu!!
But I realize that I don't know anything about how to do all this, so started looking around in the Leo Wiki, Tips and Tricks sticky and so on but I feel that its all very comprehensive and I simply don't know where to start, and I don't think the (otherwise awesome) guides are as extensive as could, at least not for my understanding. I haven't come across a newb forum/thread where all the very, very basics are introduced/discussed, so I'm thinking: any noobs out there? or post-noobs? who wanna share some of their mighty wisdom and experience with me? (yeah, I want some Leo-friends)
Okay, so I found a few things I wanna try:
From Leo hints and tricks sticky:
7. Get the old Task Manager Back
To be able to really close programs using the X instead of just 'minimizing' the program and leaving it in memory,
install Duttys HTC Task Manager (attached below), restart and the X is back. Also in Settings you can configure its function.
8. Add Task Manager to Home Screen Quick Links
Copy the hidden TaskMgr.exe file from your Windows folder to your Start Menu/Programs folder. Now it's possible to place a shortcut on your Manila today and you can open/close running programs with ease.
So how do I install this dutty cab? I mean I downloaded it, but where do I unpack it, and how do I run it on my phone?
Okay, next thing:
The location on "my today" is wrong, I saw in the tips and tricks that a lot of users had issues with this, but how can that be? There isn't any way to fix it, cause mine is showing that i'm about 15 clicks away from where I really am, but the navigator works fine? :S
3rd thing:
My network only provided me with a 2gb sdhc card, so if I want to tuck in a 16gb baby how will it work because the OS is stored on the sdhc card, or is it only in the ROM?
Another thing, I see the ROM upgrade from the danish HTC website is newer than the one installed on my phone, but do you think that I should upgrade to the 1.6 which is leaked here, or should I start with the HTC official rom from the website?
WARNING: some danish might appear when clicking here (this is the danish HTC ROM link, look at bottom of page)
I have about a zillion other questions, but my mind is empty right now. I really hope that I'm not out of line when posting this topic, and I hope to hear from some friendly HTC lovers Please let me know if this topic is not appropriate and I'll edit/delete it. (yes I did read the RULES)

Welcome and Hello
I`ll take 5 minutes to write a reply seeing as no one else can be bothered.....
Welcome to the forum, you`ll find all you need here, My advise would be to READ READ READ , and if you have any questions SEARCH SEARCH SEARCH, you`ll get flamed if you post something thats been posted before, even though if you do post, it moves from the first 2 pages so fast hence no answers......
16gb sd card will work fine,
Read carefully the goldcard method for updating ROMS and only if you feel confident enough would i recomend it...I`ve flashed 1.61 no issues....

same as i am......i am currently waiting for my beast and been reading and reading and reading this forum all this while........but the problem is.....i am a really3 noobie person on IT....some topic that were discuss here i can understand but some of have no idea at alll...hehehheh hopefully can get some knowledge from u guys.......[please forgive my english...heheheh]
Hi WildL,
I understand the noob feelings. Although this site has a wealth of information, it's not the noob friendliest place.
.cab files are like .exe files for your pc. You don't unpack it anywhere, simply copy/download to your device and run (click on it through file manager) it from where ever you saved it. It will unpack itself and install. Your only option generally is to install directly onto your device or onto your SD card.
Not sure on the location thing as I haven't experienced it.
For your SD card, there is nothing on there you have to worry about. The ROM is stored on the device and the card is simply additional storage. Feel free to shove a new one in there.
As for changing ROMs. As a noob, stick to stock updates for now. You're on the newest device with all the newest features so custom roms won't offer much except little tweaks (but the phone is fast enough already) and additional apps you can just install yourself. Some MAY be more stable but current it's not worth the risk of bricking your device. Read read read and when you feel comfortable and think your ready, then start looking into cooked roms.
Good luck!

I'd recommend you use this instead...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=584415
It means you have the X which you can configure to close apps or minimize them (you can open settings for it by tapping it on the sense ui and going to the wrench). You can also list open apps from the sense ui by clicking it and simply switch to or close anything in the list. Have a play - it's the best all-round solution.

At least your location works! lol
It uses your provider's network to get your location - not GPS. It's always going to be within a mile or 2. Since it's only meant for general info, it doesn't really matter much. I doubt the weather 2 miles down the road is much different than it is where you are

The SD card is purely for storage. You can take it out and the phone will still function properly. This obviously changes if you install software on the card. Unfortunately, the HD2 has a pitiful amount of internal storage memory, so I'd actually recommend using the card to install stuff on. With this in mind, I got myself a 16GB SD card and use that, treating it as if I'll never remove it. I'd obviously recommend this, cos it's what I do

If your phone is pretty new and you've not done much setting up, it's probably the best time to make sure you've got the most up-to-date ROM. If you got the phone from a provider then you can officially only upgrade using ROMs that they supply. If you got it completely SIM free, then you can use the HTC ones that are out there. The current new one (1.61) is actually an official HTC one, so it will be as risk free as flashing a ROM can ever be. It's just not officially released yet. (I believe HTC "leak" their ROMs so that this community can beta test for them, before they release to the general public, but that's just my belief )
Since the phone is still so new though, I don't really think that it makes much difference. The ROM upgrades seem to be doing so little at the minute that you may well not notice any benefits.
Either way, if it's official, you've at least got some comeback if it bricks your new phone!
Basically, this is just a preference. Do what you think feels right. Just bear in mind that a ROM flash means a hard reset, which means setting EVERYTHING up again, from scratch.

23mb free of 181mb

Well first off it sucks that I only have 23 mb left after owning the phone for about 30 hours T_T but how come it says theres only 181mb left? is it just because windows can't see some of the files (like the windows folder)? because Im supposed to have 512mb right? :/
The rest is used by the system (ROM). You can only access those 181MB.
Yes, it really sucks that there's so little storage left, especially with the Album, Youtube and browser cache growing so fast that they eat the whole storage withing just a few days. The Marketplace, that only installs to the internal memory, enforces the problem even more. This is a HUGE problem for non-powerusers, who get their applications from there and don't know how to delete the caches.
- delete the Opera executables (\Windows\Opera9.exe and OperaL.exe)
- delete the Youtube cache (located in \Windows\Youtube\),
- search the forum about how to relocate the Album cache
- install all your programs to the storage card, when possible.
I have a feeling that this is "design" faulty. HTC should not provide 512MB ROM. The ROM "image" is taken 300MB already.
If HD2 taken so much of "Total Storage", why in the first place HTC decided 512MB ROM? Might as well give it 8GB right away.
There's something not right with HD2 initial first batch. Camera, SMS, storage, ghost-screen, hyper-sensitive touch, etc. Too many problems....
They should have at least provided enough so that non-powerusers would not run into problems.
And Microsoft should finally make the Marketplace install programs to the storage card.
It doesn't make sense to sell a phone that has an application store but not enough memory to buy applications from it.
Other than that, I don't have any of the problems you mentioned. It's a pity that there have been so many issues, but on the other hand, I can't think of any smartphone that was flawless from the day it was released. It shouldn't be like that, but unfortunately it is, it's a sad truth and HTC is no exception.
But at least we didn't have to wait any longer for the phone... I personally prefer some small issues to having to wait forever...
with so many models HTC has established, this is the "wierdest" model they have ever made..."design" failure issue...I would certainly advice potential buyers to wait for next batch (any idea when) to come out or wait for their super-android model(s) (Nexus One...?)
The next batch won't have more memory and the rest of the issues is software, so waiting doesn't make much sense.
pray hard so that the next batch will have less "image" ROM. 300MB is too high for 512MB ROM. So the next batch "will" be shipped with fresh new stock ROM having much more stable system.
As of now, we have to play around with current situation.
There's nothing wrong with the design, per se. There's just a lot of bloatware and the pagepool setting (normally high for stock ROM) that take up the majority of the memory.
Talk about PagePool, what's the default PP for HD2? 8PP?

I think ClearTemp should help you delete some ofthe cache and temp files...
Thanks everyone, annoying though that its not just me, that its the problem with all the HD2
When a hardspl comes out Im sure if I flash my device with a cooked rom, it will be alot better as they wont have so much crap on... am I right?
...Till then, use sk tools 4. something something .15 (better HD2 compatability) AutoClean clears youtube and album cache. If you don.t use copilot delete the folder located in program files, it saves aprox 18mb of storage.
Why is there a thread on this? all the info here can be found in the wiki.
1: Internal memory of the phone is used for the rom
2: why does it matter when the price of memory is insanely cheap
3: there is a thread like this in EVERY device forum
on top of this why are you all moaning about the internal memory of the HD2? personally, i would never install ANYTHING to internal memory as this is the "dedicated space" for your cooked rom when they become available and they will get bloated and all of it will be needed!
just because you get a cooked rom it doesnt mean that "there will be less crap on it" it just means that the rom chef has put the crap they want into it.
you can get a 1-32Gb storage card from ebay for about £6.99, buy one and put it in, install everything (other than system installs eg manila files & stuff that needs to be in the windows dir) to the SD card!
this is the most advanced handset on the market yet people are moaning about it for every/any reason under the sun!!

The "average consumer" soes not know about cooked ROMs and has no idea how to buz applications from outside the Marketplace, which always installs to the internal memory.
This means the low internal memory is a HUGE problem. Not for us, but for most HD2 users, who are not powerusers.
You're right, it is the most advanced handset on the market and all the moaning is annoying, but this really IS a huge issue (and actually it is the ONLY real issue). They are advertising this device to consumers but fail to make it useable for the average consumer, who has no idea about deleting caches, flashing ROMs and installing to the storage card.

Adding an SD card is not a power user addition to the device! HTC even provide one of roughly 2Gb size in the HD2 box...put it in the device. this is not poweruser, any chimp can do that.

ok, firstly, take a look at your HD2, if you dont know anything about these devices or at least are not prepared to read, why do you have it?
Second, i have been using these devices for 6-7 years, NEVER deleted cache in my life!!
Thirdly, if a user installs an app, gets the options: "Install to Device" or "Install to Storage Card" and then does not know what this is, then they probably also cannot tie their shoe laces.
A lot of people (stupid ones unfortunately) have got HD2's in the last few weeks and the XDA-Dev forum has been flooded with retarded posts like this asking stupid questions which are answered in the wiki or elsewhere in the forum.
XDA-Dev is THE HOME FOR POWERUSERS of HTC devices SO naturally I would assume that people are here because they know, or are looking to learn, and below i have quoted the forum rules:

No, Marketplace only installs to internal memory.
Which makes all the rest of your post obsolete. Sorry but you missed the point completely.
And I'm not talking about forum members, I'm talking about average consumers who buy the HD2 but never had a WM device before. They have no clue how to get applications from outside the marketplace. Thus, they buy everything from there, install it to internal memory and wonder why it's full after installing only a few things and watching a few youtube videos. They don't know how to install something to the SD card and they don't know how to delete youtube and other caches to free internal memory. Those are the people who then return their HD2 and buy an iPhone, because they think they can't install more than a feww applications - and this is a HUGE problem. If HTC wants to sell a consumer device, they need to make it useable for average consumers, who have no clue about gettimg applications from outside the market and freeing internal memory.
It's not a problem for me and not a problem for most of the users here, but we are only a minority among the people who buy the HD2.
Hi
Not trying to hijack the thread but.....
I have virtually no ROM mem left, and was trying to install some more games and apps, i was given coice of device or card so selected card, however the apps / games would not install saying not enough mem on device, for some reason even tho i was selecting mem card, it would try to default to the device mem.... any words of wisdom or ideas, is there there any way i can force the install on to a memory card??
Thanks in advance
Well I dont have a problem, and I have **** loads install on my phone, maybe its because im not a chip as said above, fitting an sd card is simple
Yes you're not a chip. Most users of the forum aren't. But there are users you don't have a clue and if HTC wants to sell the device to regular consumers, who in general don't have a clue, they need to make it idiot-proof. That's why the iPhone sells so well: It's a crappy device but it's idiot proof.
The HD2 is already very easy to use but the storage thing is a huge problem for people who don't have a clue - and that's the majority.

The majority of people who get this phone get it because they know the brand and know windows mobile. YES, there are lots of people that don't fit into those categories (as you can see by the influx of new people on this forum), but they are simply a louder voice because the people who are in the majority don't need to keep asking simple questions.
Anyone who doesn't think that an expansion slot is a way to extend the overall capable size of their phone should buy a simpler phone, with less capabilities, OR spend the time and effort to learn how to use it correctly, without spitting their dummy every time it does something that they do not understand (or doesn't do something that their iPhone or Nokia did previously).
This forum is to help people, and to share knowledge, not for wingeing and moaning.

Not an expert, but it sounds like other descriptions of the symptoms caused by incompatible SD cards I have read in other threads. You did search before posting, right? If not, try having a look at the SD card compatibility thread.
Either way, post a little more information on your card type and size and you might find someone who can help.

If you go to the WP7 Stickies Thread at the top of the forum (second sticky thread down) there is a bunch of useful links, but one towards the top of the second block is 'Confirmed Working SD Cards'. Should be a good start point and worth investing if you don't have anything handy, by the sound of it.
