GPS out of the country?

Hello!
I'm just back from a trip from london. I brought with me my P4000 thinking that I would be able to use it's great GPS abroad.
It never worked once.
I thought this thing had an aGPS chip, meaning it was a true GPS that could be assisted by cell towers to find a fix faster. So, my understanding was that it should have worked abroad, albeit slower to find a fix then here.
As soon as I got back home, it started working again.
Any ideas?

If you were roaming overseas, then you won't be inside Verizon's firewall, therefore you won't have connectivity to the PDE server. The standalone GPS should have still worked, though it probably would take a lot longer to fix due to the fact you moved a great deal since the last fix. Did you try to use QuickGPS to download the ephemeris data? That probably would have sped up your fix a little.

I'm using tomtom, so, I don't need access to verizon. Anyway, I'm with Telus.
I've let it stand by the window for hours and it never got a lock. I didn't try QuickGPS.
Should I have switched something in the registry to have it work in standalone mode instead of assisted?

Well, i'm living in Republic Of Moldova. WE have no aGPS here at all, but i still can use GPS function on Titan. I have to wait about 1-3 minutes for lock.
I have installed DCD 3.2.6 rom and 3.42.50 Radio. Use SeaSGEE to download ephemeris data and Navitel Navigator. But Tom Tom and any other programs work fine too.

If you do that right, i'm pretty sure it won't even attempt to connect to a PDE server (when u change GPSMode), so you should be able to get a *slightly* quicker lock, as it won't waste time looking for that server.
I do also suggest using some other tool like QuickGPS to retrieve the ephemeris data before trying to get a lock; it *should* speed it up, but I don't know how true that really holds.

I was able to get GPS locks all over Europe no problem this past July.

I'm using tomtom, so, I don't need access to verizon. Anyway, I'm with Telus.

Well it doesn't matter whether you have Verizon or Telus when it comes to aGPS. I was referring to aGPS. If you aren't inside your carriers internal network, then you won't access the PDE.
The GPS should still work regardless, just in standalone mode, which is why I asked if you tried QuickGPS to try and speed up the lock times.

I was under the impression that there is a registry setting for the global "zone" for our GPSr to look for and that it was set to US.
From the posts I reviewed few if any folks have been able to lock overseas unless they got locks while traveling
GC, have you found any settings in the registry for this?
In QuickGPS I think the setting is as follows:
[HKLM] - Software\HTC\QuickGPS\region
Its set for US for me here in TN and I think someone from Holland posted on PPCGeeks a long time ago NL worked for him to get a lock once he found and got it via trial and error...

I think you guys are really onto something here. I have had the most frustrating time with my titan because of this very issue. I travel outside of the USA frequently and in all my travels have only managed to get a lock once! All through Australia and Thailand with no phone signal I was unable to get a lock with either flight mode on or phone mode on. Even in Taiwan where VZW has some modicum of representation (i.e the phone function worked but zero data) I go no lock.
gc was right about the agps thing. Outside of Verizon network you will not get assisted gps (although strangely when in "extended area" roaming inside USA it still seems to work).
in the end i tried a hundred things to get a lock including leaving the phone out in the full view of the sky for 6 hours. Nothing worked except the gps mode that scrawnyb talked about. I finally got a (very slow) lock after what seemed like hours.
I really believe that osteo's answer about the zone (i.e. "US" here in USA) is also part of the answer. I can only assume that the ephemeris data has to be relative to where you are on the earths surface, so the phone having some idea of where you are surely would help (especially without cell tower help from agps).
Targitai, if you visit this thread again can you please check the setting in your phone to see what zone setting you have that assists with locking. You need to look in [HKLM] - Software\HTC\QuickGPS\region and check that you are not set to "US" or similar.
I wont be traveling OS for a few months now, so I cannot confirm any of the above. I hope others who are traveling see this thread and can report back.
Thanks for the helpful info on this thread. This problem has been bugging me for months. Strange this is that my bluetooth gps never takes more than about 2-3 minutes to get a lock, even after crossing to the other side of the earth, over 9000 miles to Australia.

How long did you wait, and do you have a clear view of the sky?
After traveling a long distance it can take some time to download the full catalog info on the satellites.

I waited a few hours in clear sight of the sky.
My old hp hw 6515 with a old stand-alone GPS chips can find a lock fine...

I have had my gps lock over the ocean in an airplane. I dont have navigation software installed other than google maps so I just used Visual GPS to verify I had lat/lon fix and a gps speedometer app to tell me I was going at the same speed the captain had said. No wireless data connection at all.

Hi, I have a similar problem, but when I'm in a no service area, the GPS locks in 2 minutes. When the phone gets a cell phone tower, never gets a lock unless I let him overnight catching sats. I'm from Venezuela, may be the cell phone towers or the network, I don't know, induce some kind of conflict in the position calculation of the GPS. In the flight mode the problem persist.

HTC Touch Vogue and GPS

Hello, just need something things cleared up, I have unlocked my phone by cooking custom rom and enabling GPS capabilities for this phone. I have spent a week or so learning how to mod different things like SPB, S2U2, icontacts, etc.... I traveled to Montreal from Toronto using the GPS pay services, $8 a month, which is reasonable, but I was wondering if it possible to use the GPS capabilities for free. I know when you go buy a GPS unit, you dont have to pay for the service, only if you want to update your maps. Is there some registry hack or software that will enable this for free. Please let me know and point me in the right direction if possible, thanks everyone.

Original poster was asking whether it was free to acquire GPS through satellite rather than through a data connection.
I have an Elf so I don't know the answer, but the Vogue has a GPS chip in it so I'm assuming it can communicate with satellites. If you have the newer ROMs then it should have GPS enabled in the operating system.

did you know that your phone doesnt communicate with satellite gps but its making a triangular equation with his cellular satellite. I'm working on getting a gps lock without having any contract. And getting a free internet connection at the same time if youre able to get a gps lock you have internet acces because they came from the same source.

Hey guys thanks alot for your replies, I think I have a better grasp on what you all are saying. So, I have enabled the GPS capabilities on my phone through the ROM. Now I have a icon in programs menu that says GPSNav. When I go to that application it gives me 2 options, 3.50 a day and 8.00 a month. From what I understand GPS on these phones are done through a data connection meaning the internet, not through locking onto an actual satellite like those dedicated GPS devices. I do have an unlimited data plan right now. So, is it because I'm running this particular program that I have to pay? Or is there another program I can either use through one time purchase or I can find on the net somewhere that I can install and get GPS for free through using my unlimited data plan (triangulation). If there is an app out there, whats the name? Thank again!

Hmm... I thought the GPS capability of these newer phones was equivalent to the functionality of using separate Bluetooth GPS receiver. Thus no need to buy the receiver anymore.
Correct me if I am wrong, because this was one of my reasons for wanting to buy a Touch Diamond or the Touch 3G.

i dont know for the touch diamond or the touch 3g because the telus interface is cdma not gsm. but if you want to get an gps connection without being charged for it. its shure that if you have to open an app that charged you for using the gps its because first- that you've not flash a custom rom or simply with the new htc rom wm6.1 you can just modify your Qpst and with a little registry hack you can get a fully free of charged gps using. but you will need to install a gps sorftware that already have all the map in it. or if you have and unlimited data plan get google map and youll never be charged for using the gps chipset enabled.
For now I've almost get a gps lock with my HTC libra without any plan at all, its seeking for satellite but not able to lock on 1. im trying to get a pass trough the cellular tower to get a data unlimited to for free with cloning and some little other hack. ill see if its working.

all of this working because off all the time i've put on this. reading and trying modification in registry, modification in the epst with ##778 and the getspc, changing values in qpst for enabling the gps chipset and dont forgot to change your spc if you dont want telus to get in and see what you have done in it. the key to get all off this working will stay secret for a week minimum because ill see if after a week everything will stay alive maybe ill tell somebody who will pay for it. but after making the impossible-possible the secret key to that is.....lol

I'm not fully understanding what you're saying. But... to help others out you are making them pay for it? On this site?
My initial point about the GPS chip was not to imply CDMA or GSM. It should have nothing to do with either. I'm talking about direct satellite tracking (like with a bluetooth receiver) not tracking through cellular network. Maybe someone else can enlighten us on this.

im not telling to ask other to pay for my help but for the key to acces the network without any data plan and get full free access to gps. about your idea to get an outside gps connect with your device, for me its an crazy idea because youre gona pay for a gps device that is already in your htc device and that you can get full use of it without being charged for it.
the way i've found to connect to the network is pretty easy after all but that take me so much hours to found this hack that im not gona give it to a nobody(french term)

when youre talking about direct satellite its your choice but about me im not working on that because ive no interest in that.
Now next step is to get a free access to the cellular tower and get access to make phone call without having a plan with a company

My Elfin doesn't have a GPS device built in. that is why I have to use Bluetooth to connect to my separate GPS receiver. That is what most people do.

2nd day off free internet access
day 2, the internet connection still alive.
-I think that yesterday about 3hrs after i got access they try to deconnect me . Because i've been deconnected and they send me and msg that ive not permission to acces the network. but after soft-reset everything get back on and nothing else apen after that everything going good.
-Now can somebody now if its possible to make a roundup connections with cell tower. is it possible to activate the option of making the request activation after the connection begin like the 10 min registry hack activation delay for the btpan in dcd rom

I have an Elfin myself, so I don't know how the Vogue works...
But from what I've read, the Vogue has a built-in GPS chip. This is not to be confused with aGPS (Assisted GPS), which uses the cell towers to triangulate your position; it's not as accurate as true GPS but it gives you a good idea. I'm not sure if aGPS costs you money, I would assume it does as it needs to use the internet (Google maps uses an aGPS style positioning).
Where as true GPS uses a chip to pick up on the 24 GPS satellites or so, orbiting the earth right now. The chip is designed to get a satellite lock, and the satellites help triangulate your position to a more accurate position. Well, more satellites/cell towers = better accuracy. Therfore consider 24 satellites, or 3 or 4 cell towers. Obviously true GPS works better.
So from what I understand, you just unlock the GPS (which I believe is true GPS), then I would download Garmin XT for windows mobile and use that. You will have to download or buy the map sets, load those onto an SD card in your phone. Then you can use Garmin XT (with pre-installed maps), combined with the internal GPS chip - it should work just fine, and will not use the internet.
I have been using Garmin XT on my Elfin, with a bluetooth GPS and it works great. I have never used a data plan either.
Now, I just wonder what chip the Vogue is using for it's GPS - it must be some kind of SiRF chip... Maybe someone can tell us, then we will know the exact type of GPS it uses.
Try out Garmin XT and let us know.

Sadly Rogers touch Elf does not have GPS capabilities. The Vogue is the one with GPS. See Bell CDMA Touch otherwise known as the Vogue.

hi i do have software ,is call imobium,i dont know how to send it to u ,but it is such a gps on htc touch elf GSM from rogers. i bought one of those phones and i'm using imobium.
replay if u have another channel where i can send u the specs of the program and the posibility of sending u the program it self.

If agps uses gprs not sat then would you incur heavy data use charges? I don't have any type of data plan (they are rediculous in price) besides, where I live, there is pretty much an open wifi hotspot anywhere I go so I have just been using the WIFI whenever I need to. I am interested in learning more. I did some googling and my understanding was that AGPS still required GPS. IF AGPS can work using GPRS Only, what can you do with that? Can you still use navigation software on the device and have turn by turn directions etc..., Can you use it to tell your speed altitude etc.. while driving? If you drive through a zone with no coverage, then AGPS would not work? There are several of these "Dead Zones" in my area in the North of Ontario Canada. (Dead zones for all cell phones no matter who your carrier is)
From what I have read there are a lot of phones that have AGPS however, most have it completely locked up so that there is no way to use it though. (Providers use it for their own purposes I guess - TO SPY ON US) I don't know about the Elf though. Haven't done that much research on it yet. Since there is no official WM 6.1 Rom release (For the Elf) to release the AGPS capabilities, maybe one of the custom roms from this site can do it. If it can be opened up for use with a ROM that is.

Funnily enough, A-GPS did actually come out as a data based gps solution back when EDGE came to the scene.
But suddenly phones started coming out with their own GPS units installed. UH OH, the carriers said. This imense source of data revenue, is now going to go away.
What to do? What to do?
I GOT IT! We redefine what A-GPS is. Instead of being simply data capable phone tracking system, we take phones with existing, and fully functioning GPS units, convince people that we are actually "helping" the performance of the GPS units with our networks and VOILA, we make even more money than before.
FYI, A-GPS was actually basically the same technology that Google Maps now uses for their "My Location" which is to normalize or coordinate, your location from several cell towers, and have a pretty good approximation of where you are.
All that was required was software (ie MAPS) that could take advantage of this technology that existed from when cell phones came into being.
That is why if you were one of the early adopters of set technology (originally came out with CDMA 2000) companies, you would have noticed that your so called "A-GPS" was as good as your reception was.
So really the more modern A-GPS, should be called GPS-A-CellCOMPANIESmakeMONEY.
But my suggested name did not fly so they decided to stick with A-GPS.

HTC Snap, GPS not detecting satellites

I can't get a satellite lock on my HTC Snap.
I have enable "use GPS" in google maps. google maps will search for satellites and after sometime come back saying weak signal & some recomendations to look for clear view of the sky.
Garmin XT also can't search GPS satellites. I install GPS Test, it seems that there's a GPS hardware but somehow the signal reception is super weak.
I have sent my Snaps to HTC service center and the best thing they can do is change the mainboard. This also show no result.
Anybody, please help. i'm starting to get frustrated with this GPS issue...

Bing GPS
I use the Bing app and have similar issues establishing GPS signal. This is my first GPS device so I'm not sure if this is normal, or if the phone is crap for GPS, or if I'm doing it wrong. I try to keep the QuickGPS updated, but that doesn't seem to help. I thought AGPS was supposed to be fast, but faster compared to what? Maybe this is 'fast' for GPS. I have seen friend's full on GPS devices and they seem to pickup pretty quick. So... who knows?

One thing to definitely try is make sure quickgps is up to date and automatically downloading. garmin could NOT find my location without that up to date and it would show one red bar signal strength. once i loaded up quickgps, updated it, and ran garmin again, full green signal.

It's The GPS Hardware ...
I've tried it all with my Dash 3G -- and concluded that it's the GPS in the phone that is garbage. I've since switched back to my trusty OnCourse Bluetooth GPS and I get a lock in Google Maps in less than 30 seconds and in Garmin XT in less than 10. IMHO, the GPS is certainly a weakness on this phone.
It finally sunk in for me when I lost signal 9 times while walking a few miles down Beacon Street in Boston. Holding the phone in my hand it kept dropping the signal over and over again. So I gave up. Built in GPS is handy in a pinch (when you have 30 minutes to wait for it to find a signal) but for serious navigating I use my Bluetooth GPS exclusively now.

I completely agree. Simply because something is not working like it should for these others does not mean that the GPS is not good. I use garmin xt with my ozone and its is extremely fast at updating my position as i'm driving along.

Problem solved
Let say that i'm in a really bad luck. this is my first GPS device and its not working. After the 2nd time come out from the service center (2nd concecutive mainboard), then the GPS is functioning, normaly....
my maple can get lock on GPS signal quite fast. with AGPS updated, it can get signal lock within seconds (given you have a clear sky view). i found that it could takes some time for Garmin XT to get GPS signal, so I use GPS Test to speed up the process then start the Garmin XT.
so for those who can't get GPS signal. it's definitely your hardware. I also found that the online customer service officer at HTC is just a mere lips service / useless. they keep telling me to be patient and patient without real action.

There's a free GPS testing tool for Windows Mobile called GPS Test. Once that set up, you can find out which serial port is used by the GPS receiver in your Windows Mobile, and set Google Maps GPS setting accordingly. Once it's set up, Google Maps can easily find multiple satellites if you're on open space. Once it's using GPS, your location on Google Maps will be a pin point, rather than a large circle denoting your approximate location.
PS: Found out with GPS Test that my GPS receiver in my Snap is using COM4 port at 9600 bps

WIND Mobile HTC Maple users not getting GPS working PLEASE READ!
I went through four HTC Maples (two accounts each 1st phone was a warranty exchange for another non-related problem). Each of the four Maples could not lock in single GPS satellite. WIND tech support had no clue after many calls and tests run at their tech support offices in Toronto. WIND recommended that I get in contact with HTC directly to see if they might have a solution.
One call to HTC started the ball rolling and setup a trouble ticket. Within 3 days and about seven call backs to trouble shoot, HTC had the solution and both of our Maples now have fully functioning GPS with Google Maps.
The problem was in the ROMs that had an old version of Google Maps (both their WM 6.1 and WM 6.5 HTC Maple ROM for WIND accounts).
Solution: using the Maple's browser go to m.google.com/maps and install the latest version. Problem solved!
HTC customer service in North America ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!
Will I buy another HTC product? HELL YA!!!

Here's a gem!
My Snap used to take 30-40 seconds on a cold start to get a location lock (with aGPS turned on).
I installed the attached CAB (which just adds some registry keys, also found here: Here), which makes the phone use Google's aGPS server, and got a cold start GPS lock in 7 seconds... indoors!

Thanks for updating the link.
I have tried both of the CABs for the non Nokia and both make no difference if you
can't get a GPS lock. AGPS simply does not work using the latest Google maps CAB
available.
The "FF Ultimate aGPS Tweak_supl.google_Generic.cab" actually makes Google Maps
take forever to just start up after being installed and still no location is updated
indoors. Also, the phone will not snyc now with the desktop and this is after three
soft resets.
Even worse is the fact the phone now runs slow as hell. Everything takes forever
to open and is VERY sluggish.
Installed the other CAB "FF Google aGPS Settings Generic.cab" and still the same
problems. What could be the problem?
Finally got fed up with the POS CAB and uninstalled it. So far I've notice that the
phone has recovered its speed opening items and the right ones not like before
with that POS CAB which would cause all kinds of problems. Snyc now works
and so this looks like I'm back in business minus the fact I still can't get the aGPS
to work.
Oh well, you can't win them all...

Ok... let's asume you're not trolling here, altho this kind of question is sorts of "I don't have gas in my kitchen, will the electric stove work and how"... and I'm kinda bored, so I'll do the explaining.
GPS or Global Positioning System works via more than 30 satellites in the orbit of the earth and devices with GPS have a chip, that can recieve the electromagnetic radio signal sent by the satellite, once the chip aquires signal from at least 3 of the satellites it's able to pinpoint your location via a method where it finds the point where all 3 of the satellite signals collide (your location)... Imagine drawing 3 circles and all 3 of them touch each other.. the point where they touch is the point you're at, and the more satellites you're connected to, the better is accuracy of the location.
WIFI and mobile network (edgem 3g or LTE) aren't really able to give you accurate location, altho, if they are available, both could be used to give you aproximate location (same technique as GPS - 3 radio towers and you can tell where aproximatelly in between them you are), to help the GPS find your location faster. There should be at least 8 visiable (reachable by GPS) satellites in any given time anywhere on the earth.
EDIT: as I could asume from your post, you don't know what WIFI and LTE are, so I'll do quick explaining to you
WIFI is just a standard, being used, to wirelessly transmit data fast, but in short range (ex. you router at home, transmiting data from your modem, or even your phone as a hotspot, transmiting data it's recieves and sends to the radio tower of the mobile operator)
So we get to LTE, which is also a standard being used for the 4th generation of mobile data transmiting, which works via radio transmiters by mobile operator.. those are placed on the ground and you can pretty much spot them everywhere (big towers with antennas)...
So conclusion: a GPS device does NOT need LTE or WIFI to operate, but it can use them for quicker GPS operation, if the GPS device supports aGPS standard ( more info: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assisted_GPS )
