hey guys. i just wanted to know on average, how long does your battery last with either 3g or edge on 24/7. from what i been experience, after a full charge with edge on, i make one phone call and my battery drops to 90%. after that, from morning till night time, it drops to around 30% at around 6pm with minor activities. so i just want to know how long does your battery last for all you internet users.
My battery lasts about 72hours if only bluetooth is activated and EDGE/3G is used and I use it "normally"(read a few emails and a few phonecalls).
I don't believe EDGE is ever always on...
I use WiFi almost the entire day while I'm in my apartment doing work and constantly getting important emails. My battery could probably go 48 hours but I charge it every night.

ur right its not always on. however, i have few programs that is set it to connect every 20 mintues, so lets say i do get disconnected, it will reconnect and refresh.
Yea I understand. I'd say if your battery isn't lasting all day with minor usage, something's up.
something between 24 and 48 hours, depending on how many phone calls i make and if WiFi is on or not.
usually i talk a bit on the phone, 24/7 Internet through Edge/3G and Push Email enabled i get 40 hours.
my battery life
my battery lasts for 14 hours i hear mp3s on bluetooth headset ,i use 3g couple of times check my inbox or so... wireless s used for 30 mins and 2 hours phone calls and some snapshots using the cam
When browsing ALOT through the day less than 24 hours.
Using often Opera Mini 4.2.
With Opera Mobile 9.5 even less (much more data).
I never keep my internet connection open constantly, always turn off after using.
I've been using CSD to browse the net for the past 4 hours. the screen barely ever turned off during this time. I'm down to the last bar of battery. does that sound reasonable?

seems reasonable enough. when im at work, screen barely goes off since im always using palringo to chat with my buddies hehe
but yea, after a few hours of usage straight, im usually down to about 40%
The phone only draws power when sending or receiving, more so when sending. Just having the 3G/3.5G connected on idle does not use a lot of power.

Doesn't it eat up the battery if 3G is constantly on, since it is trying to receive a signal to keep alive the connection? Similar to the regular phone connection?
My data channel had been on for 43 hours when I checked this morning. That is GPRS though, not HSDPA/3G. The phone was still showing 20% after almost 2 days.
Battery use with HSDPA though is much shorter, like 12 hours or so.

how do you check how logn our connected? mine doesnt show. i remember back then when i had my tytn 2, it shows the time.
Tap the signal strength icon and it should tell you how long your data channel has been connected. In my case, right now it says:
mobile web (GPRS, 3G) 06:05:10

Question
I have an iphone, and I only use it for email, because I can leave wifi enabled, and it will connect and check every so often, the wifi goes off when its "sleeping" but will switch itself on to check for email.
My question is, with my xperia, if I leave my wifi enabled and put it to sleep, will it still disconnect/connect if/when it needs to and still give a decent battery life?
So far I keep it off and don't even use it for email, but if i can get similar behaviour and battery life to my iphone (giving me almost a week with wifi left on, not being used for anything else) then i can ditch the iphone and just use my xperia.
My only other option was to take out a data plan add-on, i like having my emails checked regularly for me and being notified, but when i tried it on my second day of owning my xperia, it killed hte battery in under 3-4 hours.
Any suggestions, comments, etc?
Thanks.

Use Advanced Config to get this option enabled
I am connected to internet 24/7 with HSDPA
Loading web pages here and there around the day, syncing email evey 30 mins, BT 24/7 with MBW-100 watch and my car, WiFi occasional to move files around my work network and home, GPS 1 or 2 times a day, and heavy, heavy phone usage with some videocalls
I even share the SEX1's internet to my desktop computer because it's faster than ADSL
At the end of the day I still have 30-10%
I would say 36 hours of battery life
When I used the Diamond I had to recharge at lunch, TyTn lasted until 3-5 pm
BETTER phone I've ever had, by far
PS: battery drains very fast when sharing HSDPA internet to the desktop PC with WMWiFiRouter, so I prefer USB sharing when at office
always on doesn't mean anything if there's no active data transfer. It's the data transfer that's consuming power, not the fact that your 3G or GSM network is turned on.
For e.g. my phone is connected to internet 24/7 due to my pushmail setup, I do get mails pushed to me, but when it comes to night, since it's off-peak period it's pushed to me on hourly basis. Battery consumption will be around 10-20% over night, but could be less than 10% if I turn off pushmail.
If I were to continuously stream video off from my ISP provider's online TV channel, I would get about 5-6 hours of playback time (I think, since it was awhile since I last do that, can't last full day for sure)
I'm not sure if anyone else knows this, but I read somewhere that if you change the wifi sleep policy to never, it actually SAVES battery.
I thought this was insane, but if you think about it it actually makes sense. It stops your phone from the constant switch to Edge and 3G... which in return saves your battery.
Usually I can lose up to 5% in 30 minutes by not even using my phone.
Now that I have a constant wifi connection I have only lost 2% in an hour and a half.
Assuming you're connected to a wifi network, yes.
Otherwise, no.

I'm not sure how that works when you're not connected to a network and the phone goes into sleep...
I use Y5 which uses cell towers to remember where I am able to receive wifi. If I leave a remembered spot it will turn off the radio for me. When I come back it will automatically turn it back on and reconnect.

Hmmmm
Wouldn't the phone continue to have it's cellular Edge/3g connection going while you have the WiFi on?
Whenever I have WiFi on in addition to 3g I always see, under battery usage, wifi at about 2-3% and Cellular signal at 5-6%
Seem's like when you have WiFi on as well as Data that both are draining the battery...
The phone turns off 3g radio when you have a data connection.

UMTS is just the 3g network, that doesnt mean data. the 3G network is used for voice calls too.
so yes, when the phone is connected to wifi, the cellular data connection is terminated. always been like this.
and yes i've seen a huge battery increase with wifi set to NEVER sleep policy.
It will stop hop between 2G/3G even if you're not using the data. You'd have to force it to 2G only and then enable wifi to take advantage of this the most.
I second those findings. When at home, use no sleep policy, and going out - turn off wifi manually. Works very well.
My "always on while sleep" doesn't work.. it opt's out anyway..
Edit: Installed an app called Wifi Fixer. And my connection hold up now while sleeping. nice....!!!
Where do I find this sleep-setting?
Not looking for a flame because I'm still learning.
if you have juicedender and keep the wifi setting on what it is when your phone sleeps the phone will turn off wifi and juicedefender will turn of 2g/3g correct? If this is true then you can save double the battery by installing defender (free); right?

Go into Wi-Fi settings.. Hit Options (the capacitive button you know...)
Ha! I've had my N1 for two months now and didn't realize there was more Wifi options if you click on the options button to the left of the home button. I wish they would add some sort of indicator that there's more to do if you click on that button. I've run into this soooo many times. It's kind of nice, though, because I keep finding goodies even months after buying the phone lol.
Yes it's often a mystery - it would be cool if it was possible for the capacitive menu button be lit only when there are additional options.

I tried that on a hottie standing in line for coffee. I got slapped.
I've tried setting the wifi sleep policy on my phone (T-Mobile MyTouch Slide) to "never sleep," but I'm not sure it's helping. When I turn on wifi for a little while (say, an hour or two) and then look at the battery usage screen I see that wifi uses a pretty significant chunk of the battery, maybe 10% or so, higher if I leave it on for longer. This is even if I'm not using the connection much, sometimes I'll turn it on to do a little light browsing and then put the phone away for an hour and then check to see how much power the wifi connection ate. Today I turned on wifi for maybe 10 minutes to download a couple app updates and turned it off right afterward. The phone has been only off the charger for 3 hours, but wifi accounts for 8% of the battery drain (the rest is idle: 16%, standby: 31%, and display: 45%).
On the other hand if I stick to 3G data I don't feel like I see as much of a hit on the battery (though it's harder to tell how much of "standby" is going to 3G data).
I understand in theory that connecting to a wifi access point within the building should require less power than connecting to a cell tower a mile away, but I also disable "always-on mobile data" so hopefully I'm not maintaining a 3G data connection all the time either.
Those of you who leave the wifi connection on all the time and are reporting better battery life than with 3G data, how much of your battery do you see going to wifi in the battery usage screen?
Well for me when I leave WiFi set to never, I lost 11% in 12 hours. On 3g I lose way more in that same period.
So when push email is enabled (for my exchange work email only) my battery drains 10% every hour, even if i don't touch the phone it drains 10% Is this normal?
Overnight i lost 60% of the battery. It was 100% when i went to bed and 60% when i work up about 7 hours later. 8 emails were received during this time.
Looking at my screen, the 3G icon in the notification bar is constanlty changing between a 3G and H and the arrows are lighting up all the time. Advanced task killer shows no other active apps as well.
I have recently flashed to JM5 and have only had that problem since comming to JM5. I have tried the different tricks for restting the battery stats and calabrating the battery, turing on plane mode, but nothing really works. I'm in Australia, will probably flash back to the stock firmware if i can't fix this soon. I can't get a full day out of the phone at the moment.
Any thoughts?
Does anyone else using push have the same issue?
i have my email sync ever 1 hour
have all features turned on
GPS, BT, WiFi, 3G, etc
each battery pack last me long enough to only swap 1 battery every AM, and every PM
so i need to battery pack a day minimum
but i have 4 packs to cover me
1 on the phone, 1 in my jeans pocket, 1 charging at home, 1 ready to be swapped, as usually the 1 inside the phone is nearly depleted by the time AM/PM comes and goes
so basically i carry 2 batteries in my jeans all the time
only because i want to use it until the very last drop of juice is out of the battery.
it makes your battery last longer (training your battery)
else with just 3 battery pack is more than enough to cover a full day 24hr
Hey mate, I have a feeling this is a JM5 related issue.
I'm using JM2 with push enabled for both my work and personal email, and when I stay at my girlfriend's place I don't get to charge my phone, however battery life only goes down about 5% overnight.
One thing I would suggest is that when you go to sleep you switch over to 2G mode (in mobile network settings, change from GSM/WCDMA to GSM Only,) as that is the only thing I do which I think would be saving a little battery life. If that doesn't help you, then I'd suggest maybe changing from JM5 to JM2? Out of all the firmware I've tried JM2 has been the most stable for me.
if i go into conservative mode
no wifi, no 3g, no bt, no gps
then a single battery last very very very long i can stretch it to 2 full days, if i only turn on the feature i need when i need it, then turn it off right away when i don't need it.
but it's a drag... i rather swap battery packs
and have 3G + WiFi + GPS + push messages/calendar/contacts sync + Fring 24/7 without having to worry

Where did you buy extra batteries?
I have the same problem after I installed a new app or an update and I just can't figure out what is causing it. My phone is dead if I don't charge it overnight. Android OS used 43% of the battery last night. I too noticed the H flashing on and off a lot so I think my phone is not going to sleep properly. I have a ton of widgets installed so this makes it harder to single out the culprit.
I'll just deal with it till froyo comes around.

the very first day the phone was released
i knew it was necessary ahead of time as i'm a heavy user, even for when i was using my HTC phone
I have both GMail push and Exchang push in the working hours. And at the end of the day, I typically have about 60% battery left including two hours of pod cast playback during commute.
If your phone is in a weak signal area a lot, it will use more battery as it tried very hard to maintain a connection.

uncheck the green button on the APN settings screen
you have to configure another profile that doesn't use the same address that the 3G uses
What is push email and how do I disable it?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Well i have sorted out my issues. Turns out i had my APN configured wrong.
I had MMS and Internet setup in the same APN. I setup two seperate APNs, one for Internet and one for MMS and the battery life went back to normal. I also was not use PAP authentication when i should have been.

Hi,
I just got the focus couple days ago and have a question:
when you use the WIFI connection (at my house for example), does the phone turn off the 3G? does it use both? how does it work?
3G still remains on/connected providing your carrier and phone support 3G. when wifi is on and connected, it takes over 3G connection for data till you disconnect wifi again.

Yes and no.
There's a bit of a design flaw in WP7 that is catching many users by surprise.
What you're saying is correct when you're using the phone. WiFi takes precedence over 3G for data.
But, and this is the surprise, when the phone goes to sleep (mine's set to the maximum of 5 min), it turns the WiFi off, meaning 3G takes over.
Many people learn this the hard way, because they'll start some large download and leave the phone alone. At some point, the phone goes to sleep (the display turns off, basically), which turns off the WiFi, and now your download is switched to complete via 3G. Many people are wondering on the various forums why they leave their phone (say overnight) thinking it's on WiFi, and wake up to a surprise data usage number on 3G.
If your wireless router has a status screen to monitor live connections (I use DD-WRT, which does), you can see this behavior for yourself.
It gets better! If you're a "normal" user who plugs in your WP7 to charge up the battery overnight, you'll notice you can't turn the phone off. So, without taking any specific action, you have absolutely positively no choice but to burn 3G usage during the time period that the phone's plugged in, but not in actual use.
The workaround, if you're really tight on data usage, is to turn off your cell/3G manually, or switch to Airplane Mode, or stick your phone in a lead-lined box (okay, maybe not lead, but you get the point).
Brad.
I am frustrated with this too. I wish there was a simple toggle switch, application , that would simply turn one of them on and the other off without going into settings everytime.
This is very interesting (and a little worrying). How can I check my data usage from the phone?
Data usage
Dial *3282# and hit call
A text will come in with usage.
I make a habit of turning 3G off unless I need it, just to avoid 3G being used over WiFi or apps auto updating.

Thanks for that clarification. I spent a bit of time yesterday monitoring my WiFi connections and it appears as though you're quite correct, WiFi does stay on the phone's when plugged in. That's a tolerable workaround.
Pity none of this is actually documented, and we're all forced to figure this out for ourselves.

I read about this in the documentation for the wifi sync somewhere. Can't remember if was M$ documentation, though.
This is very annoying, I have spent the whole morning trying to find a solution for this issue. The battery runs out already fast as it is, and now the phone is not
Battery drained about 20% at night by itself. Currently draining about 1-2% per 5 minutes when idle. What do I do? I have looked on various different threads for a solution, but did not find anything to fix this issue.
How do I fix this?
Thanks, in advance.
Also some details.
I had my phone at home, I prefer the phone to use WiFi networks when syncing and updating, but to have phone turn them automatically off when not using them, that is when the phone is locked and not syncing and updating anything. But apparently it doesn't do that, it has WiFi on at all times for some reason. And I don't know if its related to WiFi, it doesn't appear to go to "deep sleep"

For me, it was the last Google Maps update. Try to disable "Reporting Location" and "Location History" under Location settings on Google Settings app(the one with the green icon). I had around 25% drain over night and half of it came from this.
Try it and see if this can help you.
:fingers-crossed:
Like above say, disable location, especially if you keep wifi on.
Leaving wifi on while sleeping itself is not good for our health anyway, so if you have data switch to 2G, its at least enough to keep internet messages coming while saving battery. And if its wifi wise, apply pm.sleep_mode=1 in your build.prop. AND, scroll up a little, wifi_supplicant_can_interval(something like that, from its SHOULD BE 15 change to 300-600).
Disable unused apps and use greenify.

Thank you for the answer, but sadly it didn't seem to do it. My WiFi is still always on, even though I have it set to turn off when phone is sleeping at WiFi advanced settings.
Although the phone entered deep sleep mode when I manually turned WiFi off, but I'm not sure if that was the case.

I understand, but I forgot to do so, I actually have an app that turns on air plane mode at certain time. But that still doesn't fix the issue that the phone doesn't enter sleep mode with WiFi on and doesn't turn it off, even though it's set to do so.
Also I did not quite understand what you were telling me there, as I got the phone last week and it's my first android phone. The app you suggested could cut it, but that means that whenever there will be an auto check for news sequence I will be downloading it with mobile data? Is there an app that could cause this?
I was about to update on this, but I just got notification about 4.3 update.
I will update this post, if this problem still exists.
UPDATE : Of course, still the problem persists, Phone goes to sleep when I have Wi-Fi turned off. But when on, even though I have it set to turn off during sleep mode, it keeps the phone wake and drains the battery.

Unfortunately this is normal, the battery life is not the best feature of nexus 4. How many screen on time hours do you get averagely?
This fixed the Wifi always on issue for me.
Turn WiFi on: Settings, WiFi, Menu (3 dots upper right hand corner), advanced, uncheck scanning always on.
Hope this helps.
