Hi Guys,
Just a really quick question here. I have my telus HTC Touch still... I recently moved down to the states and now how the HTC FUZE. My Touch is still in great shape and I was wondering what your ideas were on how I could go about making it into a PDA with GPS running Tomtom or something like that.
I already have tomtom and what not installed on there (I used it tons when I was up in Canada) I just dont need the phone features really! So if someone could give me some direction on how to permantly shut off the phone features that would be great. Like I said. I like the thing as a toy still so to have it still be usefull instead of sitting in a drawer would be ideal. Maybe leaving it in the car as a GPS unit or something.
Thanks!
Aaron
edit.. and yes I realize that this is a Vogue but I rarely used the CDMA versions forum to discuss the phone
Well even if you haven't CID unlocked your Vogue, you can go into Comm Manager and just select the 'Phone' option, and leave it permanently in Airplane mode, and tada. No more CDMA antenna wasting precious battery life.
Then, just disable TF2D, to speed it up, and place a link to TomTom on your today screen, that about covers it doesn't it?
I'm thinking more along the lines of having even the buttons remapped so that the phone pad wont pop up. So when you press the call button tom tom is launched or if you press the hang up button another gps program is launched.. that way in order to actually GET to the dial pad I would have to open it up through the programs or something.
Is this even possible? Does anyone know how I would go about doing that?
I've discovered that my touch wont start up the GPS antenna. I left it sitting on the dash of my car as I was driving around. The service with telus is long since done and there was originally a hack on the phone that got it to get a gps signal in about 5 seconds from a cold start. It dialed into some server and bang.. worked perfect.
Now that I have no actual phone service on the phone it CANT dial into that service and there for it wont get a GPS lock. It's weird that the GPS antenna is tied directly to the cell antenna though. Kind of a downer cause now I literally do have a paper weight.
I DO have an external bluetooth antenna I could use but its a serious pain when compared to just being able to start up the phone and have GPS work.
I just replaced my Touch (P3050 Telus CDMA) with the Touch Dual (P3510). I'm currently using my old Touch as a GPS device. I have TomTom and AstroGPSLauncher loaded. GPS lock speed is about the same as before. Sometimes it was slow to lock or couldn't lock at all, but I also tried my Touch Dual and it had the same difficulties so it could have been my location, buildings, etc.
But in general, it still locks relatively quickly (between 5 seconds to 30 seconds). But I also found that if I disabled the phone, it goes into airplane mode and that mode also disables the GPS chip. It'd be nice to disable the phone, but keep the GPS chip/signal active.
Without AstroGPSLauncher, the GPS rarely locks.
Hope this helps.

Okay so I think I know at least A solution but I'm hoping that someone here will be able to suggest something besides a hard reset.
I've got a Cingular 8125 a couple of weeks ago. Flashed it to the latest imate rom. I kept it from installing the custom imate stuff but did install some of the Cingular cabs.
Now I'm having a few problems with the phone. It's quite a list.
A) I can't enable wifi at all. At one point I could but the phone locked up on me while I was trying to resetup my connection. I had no choice but to soft reset it. Now I can't enable wifi at all. If I click on it in the comm manager to turn it on it will sit there with the spinning wheel like it's enabling then go back to the same icon with the x on it. I've tried turning flight mode on and off, etc but nothing seems to help it.
B) the phone HAS been locking up. It will just sort of freeze and stop responding. Sometimes I'm able to get to the memory settings in control panel and still have available memory (it's usually been around 16 MB of program memory when this has occured) but even so closing everything will often not help. Even if it unfreezes then it will usually do so not much later and often it just won't unfreeze.
C) sometimes I can't close out the phone application. This seems to happen when Magic Button is running. I click to close it and it goes from the phone to my call history. Closing that goes back to the phone again. I can't get to the Today screen. Pressing the red hangup button would sometimes fix it but usually not.
D) voice command is REALLY wonky using my BT headset (Scala 500). Okay, I know it doesn't officially work with BT headsets and I could live with that. But why does it have to be so damned random?
1) Sometimes pressing the button once will get me the chime. Usually it just gets me a lower pitched tone. If the first press doesn't get it then typically a second within a short time will. Sometimes it takes three though.
2) At one point the phone would usually play my selected ringtone and announce the incoming call over the headset. Other times I would only get the default incoming call sound on the headset and the phone and voice command announcement are over the phone speakers instead. In the last couple of days I've ONLY been getting them from the phone.
3) While typically when I'm using the headset with voice command the feedback DOES come over the headset, sometimes it gives me the confirmations from the phone instead
I think there were a few other flaky issues too but this is the majority of them. Also many of them were present before the rom upgrade so I don't think it's responsible for most of it.
edit: oh, one other thing is that after the ROM upgrade I can't get the default input to stay on anything but keyboard. Even if I change it, I turn around and it's back to keyboard again. I'm thinking, though, that there's a reghack for this?
*bump*

I have the same problem with you. Can anybody help?
any solutions i have the same problem
Try this: back up your PIM, then flash phone back to OEM ROM (cingular, t-mobile, whatever it is for your model). Then unlock it again (if needed), and flash the ROM again. If it's still garbage, try reading the thread for the ROM you loaded (chances are you're not the first to experience this problem, and the other testers of that ROM may offer solutions). If it's still garbage after all that, consider using a different ROM altogether. CRacing's CR86 Touch HD and SVI's ANGEL are both quite nice, and VERY reliable for functionality.
Ok,
I was on eXpansys some while back, and read on the HP 6915's page that you could change profiles on the today screen to change wireless protocols.
For example you could setup the following.
Home - Wifi On, BT off, GPS off, GSM on.
Car - Wifi Off, BT on, GPS on, GSM on.
Work power - Wifi on, BT on, GPS off, GSM on.
Work no power - Wifi off, BT off, GPS off, GSM on.
Would make my life a lot easier that's for sure.
Is that something that HP came up with themselves ?? Is it a download somewhere?? Anyone HELP!!
Not a built-in/free solution, but PocketZenPhone is pretty good for this:
www.pocketzenphone.net
Cheap too, EUR$8/USD$10...
Yes that's sort of what I'm after, but I really want something I can setup and just leave on the today screen, with the option for GPS aswell (I don't think that has it).
Phonealarm is what you need. Haven't not tried it on my Trinity but was pretty erractic on my P800W(Artemis).

I don't think you need to worry about GPS, it comes on when you launch a program that needs it and turns itself off when the program closes.

PocketZenPhone installs an icon that sits at the bottom of the today screen - either tap on it or or use the scroll wheel/button to change profile. It also has a today plugin, but it takes up a lot of real-estate... You can also use Voice Command to change profile by fiddling with the shortcuts.
You are right about GPS - it doesn't handle that, but since the GPS doesn't actually transmit anything there is very little to be gained by switching it off - not even sure if the various GPS ROMs for Trinity have this option.
Sometimes I notice that my device is on already when I take it out of my pouch.
I left it on my desk once to monitor its behavior... and sure enough, sometimes it will turn itself on as if it is receiving a call, but no call rings. Then the screen dims (as it should) and sits like that for a while.
Has anyone else noticed this?
What causes my phone to come out of sleep by itself?
I'm using the Sprint Mogul version with WM6.
yes, i've noticed usually that happens when i loses reception... don't know how to fix that hopefully someone out there is smart enough to figure it out
My Q did the same thing... it lights up for no reason, then times out like it should. If I don't lock my phone I end up opening a program or calling someone also it has to affect battery life. I have not been able to find out why the phone does this but I would sure love to know how to make it stop.
Do you have any emails setup that are pushed or checked on a schedule?
I find this happens when I am in fringe areas. I think it comes up when you lose service/switch to roaming/etc. I have slide 2 unlock so its really not a big deal.
ppc wakes up to password screen
I know I have read this somewhere but can't remember where I read it but lately I have had this happen. I reach for my mogul to find it awaken and with a screen asking for a password. I never have set a password and leaving password blank doesn't work. I have to soft reset to get out of it. Don't know if this is a mogul bug, wm6 bug, or 3rd party app bug. I have slide2unlock 1.19 installed as well as the Grumps iPhone theme, and HTC Touch Today plugin. Other significant apps installed includes Voice Command 1.6, smartskey, and Live Search 2.0
Anybody know the cause?
Edit: oops, meant to start new thread.
My 6800 randomly turns on and the screen for the voice dialing comes up. I have no clue why this happens but it is annoying and drains the battery faster.

Could it be that you have a BT headset that is trying to connect to it? I know mine reacts like that- as it should, since the BT should trigger a voice command.

yeah that's happening to me too, and my bluetooth is off. it's driving me nuts, i'm almost tempted to just lock the lock on my phone
I have a problem with my Touch HD in the way that everytime the screen shuts down the GPS seems to shut down. Regardless if I Push the power button or if I let it shut down by itself.
For example if I'm recording a track it will make a straight line from the point where the screen shuts down to the point where I turn it on.
I'm using Garmin Mobile XT and Kartex (a software from the Swedish lantmäteriet).
Have been using both softwares on my old E-ten Glofiish X800 and it worked fine.

I think the problem is that its not the screen that turns off, but your device is going into suspend mode.
You will need an application which prevents the suspend mode and turns just the display off.
Is there a way to keep the GPS on in suspend mode?
Is there a way to change the registry so the GPS would not shut down in suspend mode? If not, what application would you recommend to use to only turn of display but not put the device in the suspend mode?

Install MobileMagic from here,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=449654
On the options tab, choose GPS while power off.
I was just about to suggest the same thing. Mobile Magic allow for GPS to work while in suspended mode. There is even a feature that automatically calls upon what ever GPS app you have to start automatically when GPS signals are detected. Pretty cool not to mention a slue of other features this nifty app has.
Thanks gadgetuk437 and band27! Great app although a little bit too "robust" as I don't need the screen rotation & all other features. I guess I will only start it when I need to use GPS.
PoGa
I am in the same boat using GPS Watch which provides a track which can be outputted to Google Earth
Is there a registry hack that will allow the GPS to continue to be operated when powered off?
Thanks
Thank you gadgetuk437 and band27 for your advice but I don´t seem to get MobileMagic to work.
I have installed it and I have choosen autostart, start hidden and GPS power when power off. Have done nothing else.
MobileMagic autostarts hidden but doesn't prevent the GPS from turning off.
I have been using screenoff but that app doesn't really work either.
I raised the question at HTC as well and got the answer that this is something that is done by design in order to reduce the battery consumption.
I just don't understand why, If I didn't want to waste power I would of course close the GPS app before i turning of the screen.
Yeah, same here. After some testing I realized Mobilemagic's function doesn't really work. Even thought I also have the function to keep the GPS on selected my Garmin Mobile XT still looses the GPS fix as soon as the device goes into standby

I'm away to do the same...
I have Garmin Mobile XT with the Snowranger map sets for tracking my snowboarding runs. I also want to leave the phone in my pocket all day and track where I've been!
I tried it a couple of weeks ago with my Diamond whilst running. I had the music player running and Garmin tracking me - and it kept my log file (which I imported to google earth) over my whole 45min run.
Hi,
When i had my prophet before i could run GPS Tuner (or other GPS Softwares) and turn off the screen (button on top i mean) without having any difficulties. Now with the Iolite i have the problem, that when i turn off the screen the GPS gets turned off as well (as if the thing goes into standby)..
Is there any way just to make it run the software and the GPS no matter if the screen is on or off?
Just go to task manager and add it as exclusive. However it trade off with high battery consumption rate
Or you can use attached registry change. However, I am not sure if it is working as I didn't checked it yet. Maybe you can try it and inform us, if it is working.

there are 2 ways which might be helpful to your problem, but i am not quite sure.
1. some nav software will provide such options that will keep screen on or turn on screen whenever instruction is comeing.
2. before you start to use nav software, go /start menu/setup/system/background light/, uncheck device off and check screen off after xx minutes.
just try, good luck!

What exactly does this file do? Does it keep the GPS running even if your phone is on StandBy (screen and buttons turned off)?
I'm in search of the same solution. I want to keep my GPS program running, but I want to turn the screen and buttons of, when I put it in my pocket.
Or is there a separate program which can simulate a standby?
