Attached Google.
This is freeware

thx for reply. But isn't this the same that came pre-installed with the HD.
I tried Google Maps but that uses the data connection. I heard on google navigation you can save maps on storage and the use it "offline", so no need of data-connection, only GPS reciever.

Sorry, I should have read your thread properly, been a long day.
Google Navigator attached
I haven't used this application to be honest, but just installed it and a data connection appears to be required. I'll play with it and let you know if this can be disabled.

I have also downloaded the trial from http://www.pdafun.net/
and first time I started it I saw it downloded dato. I then used HD tweak to stop all data connection, and went in to Google navigator and changed som settings.
I can still start the prorgam wihtout any problems and activated GPS. It find my postition(still noe data connection used, yet). But don't know how to get a map. I only see a "world" map.
SO would be nice to know how we can download offlien maps so we can use with GPS and not need to use dataconnection, since it says it's possible

Without sounding flipant, the CAB is 1.73Mbs so I would expect it does not contain map data, bearing in mind that TomTom Maps are in the region of 1Gbs.
Maybe you have to download from somewhere else though.

<double post>

The map are downloaded using Data connection, they are download on demand by the software.

Google Navigator
the meaning of offline Navigation in this Software is that you can specify an interested area and tell the program to download the related topo, road maps, etc to the device over a data connection at a a given Zoom level. (wifi or gsm)
once the download is complete you can switch off the data connection or remove the sim and use the application to locate/Navigate your self in the downloaded area. The purpose is to enable you to use the phone to navigate yourself in a area without network coverage and/or to cutdown on the data download cost over GSM.
FYI
Google Navigator works fine on the HD except for the 3D view. it creates some areas of the map to disappear. I wrote to the developers on this bug and they said they will correct that error in their 4.9V but till the latest version the problem is still there.

is it just me or is the trial version of this completely useless? what is the point in disabling the only features that actually make this different to google maps? surely a time-limited version rather than feature-limitedwould make more sense?
I for one will certainly not be shelling out for this unless I know it works (and on my phone too).
this is most unlike google, who's software (until now)I have always been most impressed with. google maps is simply phenomenal, but does lack the turn-by-turn voice commands necessary to operate it whilst driving.
the data, for me (and many who own this type of device - why on earth would you have a device this capable without some data included?!) is not an issue. but i need to see it in action before I can abandon Tomtom properly...
is this software actually from google or just based on google maps? I still can't work out why I have to pay for this when everything else google is free (and this looks decidedly shoddier)?!
kindregards
dr_nick

Apparently Google Navigator has nothing to do with Google. The developers are just using the name "Google" because it taps into the Maps database. Caveat emptor.

Google Navigator is one of the worst PDA Apps I've ever seen.
Not only do they #1 -- Use the FREE google maps service, and charge you for their crappy front end, but #2 -- Put the name "Google" in the title of their product, so you think it's actually from a reputable source.
Google really needs to put a stop to this company because they are basically ripping people off.

Navizon - gps/cell tower/WiFI navigation

This program is awesome.
It is a navigation progam the uses cell towers, wifi AP's, or GPS.
Maps load faster than google maps in my opinion.
BUT the coolest thing is that they will pay you to collect data for them. As your driving around it searches for AP's and cell towers and stores that info along with the GPS locations. Then you send that info to their servers and they give you points. 2 per wifi AP and 10 per cell tower. When you get 10,000 points they give you $20. I know 10,000 sounds like a lot, but I've used this a few hours while driving around town to the store and stuff like that and I already have over 2000 points.
Check it out, it's free

Then again, this capability is built into Google Maps locator feature, at least to some degree, without having to download, sign up, etc., etc. Maybe Navizon has improved since last I tried it, but I have found Google Maps' feature useful for a "quick fix" to do a local search. If I need a better fix for actual navigation, well the Athena does have built-in GPS, yeah? What am I missing?

The fact that you have GPS is why this program in usefull. While you are driving about you can have this program running and it will search for cell towers and wifi ap's, then it will upload that info along with the GPS location of all of these items. You get points for each and can get money. I've used it for 3 days and just got $20. it really doesn't take that long to earn enough points, and thats with regular driving around. It wouldn't make sense to go drive around for this purpose along, but hey, if your going somewhere anyway, why not.
How to turn on GPS?

Hi. Forgive me for being un-hightech (brain a bit fried today). But I hope u can enlighten me:
1) How do u turn on GPS function on the phone? Just go to mobile provider to activate service and it will be on 4ever??
2) So for navison to detect the towers etc, all I have to do is just start the program and it will do the rest right?
3) I managed to get some points whilst I was running the navizon programme. But I am unsure whether it was through the update of my gps position... or edge or 3g...
Well i just tried installing navizon from the ppc msi install file on their web site and i get an error when starting the program and it wants to debug, and then the program crashs. I installed it to the microdrive....ill try the phones memory this time and see how it works....if it works at all
well i tried reinstalling navizon to the phones internal memory with the same problem, installs fine, go to start program and i get "a native exception occurred:
Exception code: 0x80000002
Exception address:0x00ec8328
ok to terminate
cancel to debug
any help?
Has anyone sucessfully installed navizon on an advantage? Just curious if my error is due to something specific on my phone, or if its all advantages. If anyone can shed some light on my error message that would be great....im totally clueless
had same error
on my ameo
Cameraware (from Modaco) has this built in - not actuelly tried it yetr as have just installed WM6.1 so am trying apps gradually
I'd really like to get this Navizon program working....anyone else want to try it on their advantage? I'm talking with their support team on their forums and supposebly they had it working on an advantage before

Here's what I want in GPS software

Is there anything out there that will do all of the following, and do it well on my xv6800 MR1 phone?
Turn by turn voice prompts
Speech recognition data input & instructions
3-D turn views/maps
map data that can be downloaded
local search, movies, etc.
locate outlook contacts on map
Price... free would be nice but not realistic
Is there anything like that?
Thanks,
Tim
Don't think you will find all that with voice Nav for free.
Check out AmAzeGPS, it's free, does I believe everything except maybe the local searches for movies. Windows Live Search does the movies/weather/gas prices/and locates contacts, but doesn't have true turn by turn, but it does route and dings when it's time to turn.

Like I said, it's not realistic to think that it would be free.
My real question is: is there anything available that does all the things listed?
I don't know of any that has all of those features. TomTom has most but doesn't have the voice command input but does text to voice for turn by turn. The searches would be with the pay for maps and they do have some online data services but that is a pay for subscription as well. I personally use TomTom and Live Search to get everything you listed for an GPS application.

Thanks, BTC. I have dowloaded and tried amazeGps.
It's not bad. In fact, it would be pretty nice except for one thing: every 30 to 90 seconds it stops with an error message that says, "Communication Problem" and then the ONLY thing you can do is exit the program.
That's a showstopper for me. I looked at their support forum and there was some mention of having to enter or modify settings that seemed pretty complex to me.
Thanks,
Tim
Hmm, I have only used it for short drives, but have never seen the error you described. Are you on a 1X or EVDO network?
I'm on 1X, so the original maps coming up are slow, but it had no problem keeping up with the data stream while driving.
Unfortunately there are no satellite maps for my town so I can't get the cool 3d view, but for a free tool, I couldn't complain to much.
BTC
Thanks BTC. I will try it on a longer drive today and see what happens. I'm on EVDO here (San Diego County).

I agree with the other post on the TomTom 7 (tt7). I use it at home and heavily on business travel...it does all you asked...
It do not do speech to text but does speak on turn but turn as you approach turns or intersections...again just not the street name. I have the updated maps but tt7 does allow you to download maps for other users for corrections or things they missed until the next update. I can do local searches (as well as out of town) not for movies but POI (point of Interest) items...I can look for general POI for theaters, pawn shops, or direct stores like Wal-Mart, Best Buy...etc... Best part I like since I use Outlook in tt7 I can select a contact within tt7 and boom tt7 navigates me there...
For movies show times and other items like that I have to use google maps or Microsoft Live Search... tt7 is great for my usage...

Offline GPS navigation

I'm willing to get a Hero, I never use 3G and I'm not willing, besides I think it won't be supported in my country.
Well, I want to know which decent app allows you to have just the maps you need on memory to use the GPS in offline mode. I don't need voice navigation, just a dot which tells you exactly where you are. I used to do this very easily on a Nokia phone and with just 100MB for maps stored, yes just a few cities but enough.
And yes... I want Android but this is the main buy or not buy feature I'm looking for.
Is there such app? What about Android 2? Any chance on a Google maps mod?
CoPilot is a (pay) app and the only way for offline GPS.
Smartphone without internet access is useless, imho. Get a dumbphone and a proper GPS, and you'll be much happier until they implement mobile internet access in your neck of the woods ;-)
I know what you mean
i am with you on this one, i have ported over from Windows Mobile where i used Memory Map which was FanBloodyTastic........but unfortunatly its not on android, i have asked them by email and they say not yet....but i am sure something will come out soon for this as a lot of people are asking for this type of app.
I downloaded Maverick from the market and it works fabulously well. Google mpas, Bing maps, and others, and all will be stored on the SD car, but you obviously need first to download the pieces that you need with WiFi.
RMaps works well too but doesnt store maps on SD card, only uses a cache of 4MB.
If i were you i would check out this maverick thing, coz thats what im about to do!

RMaps does not store maps but you can download the maps using Trekking Buddy and use them with RMaps. I use RMaps to view Google Maps offline and it works great. The only problem is, of course, you can't search for an address.

Offline GPS seems to be the only way to get GPS abroad for me. Data roaming is just too expensive.
I use NDrive and it is absolutely fantastic... you should check it out
CoPilot is cheap, easy to use, and fast.
NDrive is very similar to TomTom (there's no TomTom GPS apps for Androids btw) in that it requires you to go through lots of sub-menus just to do a simple task. Its slow, buggy, and not worth the extra money.
Offline GPS is far superior to any online version (doesn't require nearby cellphone towers), just a clear line of sight of the sky. The whole GoogleNavigator is very gimmicky. While its nice that you can see a picture of the actual destination, its nav software is far from accurate.
Here's a list of the Offline GPS software available (that I know of):
Co-Pilot Live 8
NDRIVE SatNav
Motonav - iGO
Papago X5
Sygic Mobile Map 9
I use IGO 8 and love it better than tom tom or google maps
PM me for links to IGO 8 with world maps best navigation app with latest maps
Mapdroyd will let you download and store maps. It then gives you your position on the map. No navigation though.....
Sent from my X10i using XDA App

Best Nav software?

Any opinions on the best navigation software for our phones (that DOESN'T) require a monthly subscription? I looked at the TomTom software but they apparently don't have any maps available for the United States that I can find. I have Bing and Google Maps but those both require a data connection. They also don't provide turn by turn voice guidance or follow along with you very well or dynamically reroute you.
shouldnt all turn-by-turn apps have data usage since it needs to track u...
otherwise from that, garmin is really nice. turn by turn, though i notice it does lag behind a LITTLE bit, but it still works quite nicely.

No, not all turn-by-turn apps have data usage, for example Tomtom does not use data.
Have you considered CoPilot 8?
There are plenty of different software packages you can use; just to mention TomTom, iGO8 etc.
CoPilot 8 is a very good package, especially given its low cost. It includes all maps for North America, and doesn't require a data connection while running (but can use one if you choose the Live services add-on to get traffic/gas price updates).
Data usage is used in two ways.
To update the maps as you move along (google etc), or to give live info (traffic reports etc)
MOST of the purchased gps software will include the full maps to the location you buy it, and will only need data if you want live traffic etc.
Some of the more common gps apps are, TomTom, Garmin, iGo8, CoPilot 8
i personally use iGo8 in europe and love it.
Copilot is great
I have used copilot before on both Windows Mobile and Android. Right now its only $20 on their site and that includes the maps so you don't have to have a data connection. I have tried a bunch of nav solutions and this one is probably the best for overall functionality and price.
I recommend TOMTOM. I used CoPilot 8 for a few months and it works well but sometimes the directions it gives are weird specially when I traveled to another state I was getting confused with the directions it was giving me compared to TOMTOM which are faster and more direct.
I'm happy with Copilot, routing is fast and accurate.
However voice warnings are terrible. They are slow, and usually late. I miss Garmin on that front.
I like just google maps............. however i also have tom tom installed............. install this, then during install you will be automaticly promted to download your 1 free city during the install...... yeah, i cant find anything online from them either. Well, I couldn't attach it here, guess it was too big. It's on here somewhere the file name is... QM_TomTom_Navigator_7.916.9189.1_VGA

Thanks.
To clarify, I don't mind if it uses data, I have unlimited data, I just don't want data to be REQUIRED for it to work. Actually, I wouldn't even care so much about that, AT&T's data coverage is okay if you will accept EDGE. I just want the voice turn by turn directions.
One other caveat, it has to be able to run from my existing microSD card. I don't care if I have to hack it or whatever, I just need it to run from my existing card with my music, etc on it. I looked at the Garmin, but you had to use only their card apparently. :-/
i use google maps for finding places and stuff. but it still doesnt have turn by turn. if it did i would probably use that. but for that i use garmin. been using it for quite some time. its the best looking and probably the most user friendly of the nav software. the gas prices feature is fantastic. but if you dont have the money you could go for something like copiolot. i havent used it though.
I have tried TomTom, Copilot and iGo in the past and have landed on iGo as my firm favorite
I am a Garmin fan. I have used various garmin devices on my motorcycles for many years. For my PDA, years ago I got a bundle with a bluetooth GPS and TomTom. Hated it. Recently, I got achance to try the Garmin XT software. Didn't care for it either.
I would like a chance to try out the iGo software. It can't be any worse, and can be found fairly cheap.
For now I use Google or Bing most of the time. I don't need the voice prompts.
Does anyone here have the navipanel from the leo?
For the life of me, I can't understand all the love for CoPilot. I bought it on Christmas day for $19. I feel swindled.
1. The primary function of navigation software is 'navigation'. This is pretty much impossible when you're working with anchient maps. I live in a city of 2+ million and my neighborhood is 7-8 years old. My neighborhood is not in CoPilot's maps...
2. The app is buggy. If I do an online update through the app, I get an error that tells me that the POI database does not match the online database. THey have POI's that don't have corresponding streets. If you tell it to create a route between to streetless POI's it draws a straight line, which is laughable...
3. The Copilot central app is extremely buggy and the gui is terrible. First, it doesn't support netbook resolution of 1024x600. Second, the application update function doesn't work. I know there is a more current version of the app out there (I have 8.0.0.346), but CoPilot central will not show me the update. Third, the map update dated Dec 29 hangs the app upon launch. All of this is from a stock t-mo rom after hard reset and format of SD card.
4. SUpport from ALK is somthing that you would expect from a company 7-8 years ago. there is no forum or searchable knowledgebase. You can submit trouble tickets, but I have yet to receive an acknowledgment of my map update request. Apparently they will add my address in 45 days, but I have serious doubts this will happen because of all of the missing roads in my neighborhood.
5. Features advertised on ALK's website are not present in my version of the app.
I could go on an on. To sum up... CoPilot is a POS, and I encourage everyone to stay away!!!
Copilot Live
I have recently switched to copilot live 8 from OCN 8.3. I find that the maps on Copilot 8 are current in my area (roads finished last year are included). I can confirm that the Copilot central software does not work on a netbook but is fine on other machines.
I have not run into the bugs mentioned above but I will update if I do. As far as the features go the software is a couple of months old. I consider it a bonus that I can purchase for $20 and upgrade only thoes features I care about.
When it comes down to it my switch was for 2 reasons. I can use my own SD card and I can get live traffic updates. OCN does not support traffic in the US and is limited to an 8 gb card.
tomtom is the simplest and the easiest to use.. there are maps for the usa.... i am currently using one that is the usa and canada together.. tomtom pics some crazy routes sometimes... but its easy to pick another..
garmin is ok... but not very customizable... hope you like the way it looks, cuz youre pretty much stuck with it... the way you add the maps is cool... you pick the states you want... so you dont have to fill up your card with stuff you dont want... im not inpressed with the way you have to enter address in this one..
igo in my opinion is the best... if you get tts voices for it, it will say the street names.. it shows the buildings if youre in a big enough city... and the 3d effect is pretty nice... it also lets you know what lane to be in on the highway and it shows you the signs you will see on the road.. the biggest drawback for this one for me is the load time...
i have never tried copilot so i cannot rank that one... hope that helps

Maps on Tilt2

Installed Google maps and it worked fine - for a while. Now, not so much - every time I launch it it tells me I need a data connection (which I have).
I've uninstalled and reinstalled on the storage card and in main memory but it will not load any maps.
So I installed Bing maps - same problem. It locates "me" fine (using GPS) but can not return any search results and will not display any maps.
Internet works fine, as do all other programs that access the web - Weatherbug, pcAnywhere, MyPhone, etc.
Help?
search for Navicomputer, free and great.
Is your data working properly in other applications? I've only ever had that problem when data is completely down wherever I am. The GPS is completely independant of the data. If you have a lot of problems you can always pick up one of the pay GPS apps that load the maps onto a SIM card so you don't have to use any data connection.
oddly enough - absolutely everything else is working. Try as I might, I can not find another application that uses the internet that is not working.
I've downloaded both Google Maps and Bing, and neither will display maps nor can they perform a search. Yet the preloaded AT&T Maps works fine (although it is seriously inferior to either Bing or Google) And I really do not want the monthly fee for the Navigator.
Totally perplexed.

ding ding ding.... I remember reading a long while ago that ATT Maps disables other map software like google and bing. Try uninstaling that or disabling it and see if google/bing works
Just an idea
thanks - I will give that a try and let you know how it works out
well I can't uninstall ATT maps nor can I figure out how to disable it. I may try the dreaded hard reset and see if that works - it did for someone on another forum with gmaps on a tilt2
I'm presuming you're using a stock AT$T rom, have you tried crudscraper to blow AT& T maps?
actually that's just one point in favor of my being a real newb! I could not crud scrape to function....It allows me to select the programs, but then quits when it goes to remove the programs - I have a post in the crud scraper thread...
but - I updated to the new AT&T ROM last night and reinstalled gmaps and now it is fully functional. Odd. My next attempt will be with crud scraper and the new ROM.
