UnRoot - where to find RC30 - G1 General

When I bought my phone it had RC30 on it. I suspect that if I have to return my phone they will expect at least RC30, I 'd prefer not to have to count on or wait for an OTA. So,.. I do know how to go to 29, but 30 can I D/L it somewhere...
I have seen the 30 to 33 upgrade but that is of not help sine obviously you have to be at 30 to use it.
I am currently rooted but would like to know the whole way out. Just in case.
Thanks.

you would have to go back to RC29 and use Any Cut to create a shortcut; activity/device info.. and the do OTA using the created shorcut
EDIT, not sure that shortcut will have the "update" key to OTA
EDIT; I found this, is the PLAT RC33 from RC30 update: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=3300937

I follow you.
So lets see, use anycut to create a shortcut to update. Drop the keys for 29 and 29 back to the G1. Reboot use the anycut shortcut to execute the update/check and If all goes well an update occurs.... Good thinking, I like it buy I always deal in worst case scenarios...
What if THEY decide to stop issuing RC30 to prevent us rooters from coming back... I'd really like to find a D/L copy if possible.

Thanks ... I just saw your edit... that is for 30 to 33, well maybe, it is an unconfirmed full update hopefully it is what I am looking for... but if it is not my search continues.

they really dont care about the rc version as long isn't "JF"
EDIT; I also thing you can still returned with RC29, dont see why not

Yeah, I guess I just don't want any problems, since I bought my phone and it came with 30 on it I figure they might notice if I sent it back with 29...hehe maybe not. Anyway this is just me doing the worst case thing, just in case.
However, it might not make a difference now but it might later on down the road... when everyone is sitting at 33+++ and suddeny someone sends back a 29 phone...then again maybe not...

So no other guesses foe RC 30...hmmmm

So in my travels I have found the thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=463779&highlight=rc29+nbh&page=1 which looks like it contains a link to the stock RC30 image..am I correct????
I was initially looking for a stock RC30 image since that is what my G1 came with...in case it had to go back and assuming I could flash it.
So an I correct in assuming that this is a valid way to return to the land of "stockdome"?

Well, this was WAY to easy to modify this and get root access to. Being a experienced linux guru it was a peice of cake, hardly any linux commands are needed to mod this phone. VERY easy to do with a factory rc30 phone. Just downgrade, than upgrade w/ modded firmware from jesus freak 1.4 btw adds a LOT of features (auto tilt browser, multitouch browser, few other goodies). If anyone has any questions.... READ THE TUTORIAL AGAIN. Its about the easiest thing you can do on a computer next to syncing your own phone.... the drivers for you people with xp are.... EASY. its a normal installation of the driver that you need to browse the phones SD card anyways and should be installed regardless of modding or not. Transfering a file to the phone and just running the recovery mode update? Cant get any easier for us.
you r so smrt
*Smacks Head*
I should have had a V8.
I will come here to this thread for further updates.

im glad it was easy for you, most of it is pretty much basic computer skills, and following instructions nothing really to master, i particular glad because some people were complaining about rooting recently bought phone and i though google/tmobile figured something out...
nah i hadnt an issue, not sure about future phones though. Came factory rc30 and only took a few hours to get it back to rc29 and right back to jf's rc30. Not really a whole lot to do with it right now. Just the beginning of the "android revolution". We just jumped on the bandwagon early

While an alleged "linux guru", you, sir, are clearly not a "spelling guru" or "grammar guru".
You also seem to be preaching to the choir. Do you also plan to break into the Snuggie factory and explain to everyone working on the floor that it's a blanket you can wear?

Switching from RC30 to RC08

Hi there, this is my first post here so apologies if i lack any detail.
Just to be clear - I have searched the entire forum and found nothing with the instructions i require.
I changed my G1 build from RC08 (uk) to RC30 when i unlocked my phone for root privileges, but i now have an app running called MyFaves-
I have read about this app and it doesn't look good, as i don't want thousands of sms' sent to a server costing me a fortune...
So i am really asking that because i live in the uk, and now have rc30, does this mean my phone sends sms' to the US server (i am on t-mobile uk), and if so, then i would rather loose the root privileges to save my wallet.
So then if it is costing me (i cannot check my credit for some odd reason, so will not know if it is costing me until march) then how do i revert back to RC08 (uk) like it was before i did this?
Thanks very much.

I dont really know much about what your asking but just to check if its costing you, you could phone tmobile free on 150 or send a text "ba" or "al" to check your balance and allowance, respectively, or log on through the tmobile site and you can check. Sorry if you have tried these and it hasnt helped, just a tip if its useful.

you could, alternatively, flash the APD firmware which doesn't have the MyFaves app. I was running RC30 on my phone and when my bill came through it charged me £4 extra. I have no idea if this was because of myfaves or because i simply went over my allowance (more likely, i do text alot ).
If you want to revert back to RC8 you can simply rename this file to update.zip and reflash it.
(don't forget to wipe first )

this should be in a sticky with all of the other stock rom versions in here to flash to origninall.... i had a horrible time finding the rc 30 stock rom lol Can Some please do this?
ok, i found out today that it isn't costing me, but i have about 50 sms' sent in 4 days because of this... but because it's to a t-mobile server theres no problems as its free.
Meltus - does your method allow me to maintain root access?
(i only ask because this RC30 is american and slightly different to the RC08, and has features with i dont like - eg puts random lines in telephone numbers... which in the UK we dont have, so is annoying)
cheers
Yes the file linked above maintains root. It is JesusFreke's modified RC8.
what do you mean by - dont forget to wipe first?
do you mean wipe my current JF RC30? if so, how?
Ok, so i switched to the rc08, which i prefer, and i now dont have myfaves! Brilliant.
cheers Meltus (the link you posted doesn't work... but got me to the right website)

Unlocked, non-Tmobile G1 where to go from here

First - I've searched, searched and searched for my particular circumstances, so if this is the wrong place for my questions I apologize in advance. (I've seen all the warnings, in so many posts - honestly! It's kept me searching and not posting for weeks.)
I bought a G1 off eBay (no tmobile in my area); it wasn't unlocked so I bought an unlock code. So far, so good. But it took forever researching how to get my particular obscure carrier settings into the APN (Iowa Wireless) and I couldn't bypass and use wifi because it wouldn't reboot (no root workaround). So then, I flashed to the 29 rom. I had lots of problems with adb but finally found a Windows XP machine that it would work on and managed to get my phone working. I had to enter some command line intent commands (that I don't have here at work) but it's been a long complicated road. I'm not even sure I could duplicate any of it.
So now I have a G1 phone that can't get paid apps, which stinks (and yes, I installed the Market Enabler app). It isn't a developer phone. The details:
Firmware 1.0
Baseband version: 62.33.20.08H_1.22.12.29
Kernel: 2.6.25-01843-gfea26b0 [email protected] #6
Build Number: kila-user 1.0 TC4-RC29 115247 ota-rel-keys.release-keys
I desperately need ebook reading capability, so without paid apps I'm up a creek. The web browser won't even open local files that I can tell and when I click on an html file it opens in a viewer that never displays my files, which tend to have lots of javascript and css. And we won't even talk about chm files and pdb/prc compiled ebooks. Is there a rom that will get me access to the Market so I can buy a couple of readers?
When I got the G1, I was thinking that an HTC phone would be the successor to the hackable Motorola phones (I used to have an A780). But in a way, this forum is too much of a good thing. There are so many roms, bootloaders and some kind of radio thing that I'm kinda scared to mess with. So, that's my next question - is there some kind of table where I can see comparisons on which roms do what and what files go together? I'm piecing things from posts and I keep getting lost.
And for my next question - if I do get up enough nerve to get install a non-standard rom, will my unlock code still work if everything gets wiped?
Lastly, and I know this is sensitive because it is an Android community - I found a few tantalizing posts while researching all my issues that hinted that maybe someone might be working on a non-Android solution. I don't know if was OpenMoko or something like that but seriously, I would jump at the opportunity to have an accessible Linux system.
As awesome as the G1 is (and the bar code thing was my killer app) it's a lot of hassle for a working mother and grandmother. I have 7 and 9 year old kids to hang out with instead of muttering "Frak this" after the tenth or twentieth rewording of the google search terms.
Thanks for letting me get this out of my system. I'm reading deprived and starting to reevaluate my old Shadow sitting on the shelf.
Terry in Iowa
Being the nice guy I am, this is a database listed under the Developer's section under INFORMATIVE THREADS (lots of goodies under there): http://www.simonwalkerphotos.com/android/android_build_information.asp
it lists the features of each ROM in the forums all neatly organized. =)
For your other question: the unlock code works perfectly fine after several wipes, its permanent. I unlocked my phone (from T-Mobile) and have gone through at least 8 ROMs and the unlock still works. With these new ROMs, you get developer capabilities and should be able to download that reader you're after.
Just take your time and don't rush things and you'll be fine. A piece of cake really.
Thanks. Your link is exactly what I needed. I know I missed it, whether it's because it's 11th on the list and my eyes were so glazed over, or I was hung up on getting root (the main thread for root on that page didn't work for me - the mount commands) or that I kinda expected it to be down in the actual ROM section.
I know this isn't about the ROM list but it's so frustrating to have threads marked but not work, and the solutions are often way down in the comment thread. That makes it so hard to get anywhere. I hope I don't sound too ungrateful, especially since I wanted the G1 because of the community support. It's just been way more work than I expected from previous experiences with other phones and pdas.
Well, I looked through the spreadsheet and I think I'm going to try out CyanogenMod v3.4.6 (Stable). Now I just need to set aside some time to gather everything together. (I'm learning...)
Thanks again,
Terry
No worries, we all gotta start somewhere. Once you have root, its pretty much just a straight ROM flash from there, depending on whether the ROM you've chosen needs the new Haykuro SPL or just HardSPL. With Haykuro SPL, there's really only 2 extra steps and you can just straight flash ROMs from there. Just be careful if you're flashing the Haykuro SPL because if you do it incorrectly, you'll brick you're phone. But don't be too scared, if you did everything correctly, there shouldn't be any reason why it won't work.
I had no trouble with the HardSPL, the radio update, the pimped out recovery image but the actual CyanogenMod almost gave me a heart attack. I applied the update.zip and rebooted, and it hung on a cool animated android screen (after the G1 splash). I took the battery out, wiped the phone (which I forgot to do the first time) and tried it again. Same results. I took the battery out again and applied the update.zip and the 3rd time it actually booted.
My previously installed programs were still there, so I'm not quite sure what happened but I'm not going to question it any further. ;-)
Thanks again for the little bit of hand holding.
Terry (proud owner of 8 paid apps and still looking...)
Good luck. If you use Apps2SD, after you re-apps2sd after a flash/wipe, it will take a very long time to boot and you might think that it has frozen, but in reality, its just loading all the apps over again so it could take up to 10min. But glad you got it working regardless. Have fun.

IT WORKED! I (with help from Moscow) UNBRICKED MY A500!

MOSCOW DESIRE IS THE HERO OF ALL MANKIND!
Or at least my hero for helping me to salvage my bricked A500. Here's my story and the fix he gave me. I am a total NOOBIE, so I'll give it to you in noobie terms.
Background
Wanted to try a tablet for the first time and not invest a lot of money in case I hated it. So, I went to Craigslist and bought a used Acer Icononia A500 for $100 U.S. It worked great for about 90 days and I fell in love with it. Then, one day.... ACER LOGO only! It would only boot to the Acer Logo.
I tried to hard reset pin hole, I tried the Power Volume+ slide the orientation switch to reset - and I got NOTHING!
So, I went on Google - asked the question and ended up on this forum. (Which is probably HOW you ended up here also!)
Getting some help
When I first started reading about the fixes - I got all kinds of techno-babble. Words like "ECCUID" and others that I had no clue what they were talking about. So, I was totally confused and just asked in desperation "Can't I just pay someone to fix this thing?" That's when Moscow Desire came to my rescue.
He basically told me to "chill out" (very politely) and talked be through the two major possibilities - which I am describing in NOOBIE language with no promises that this really what he said - but it sounded like : A) Software glitch, causing motherboard to not fully launch the operating software or B) motherboard hard failure.
In the event, it was just software - he gave me the following "fix" to try. SO HERE IT IS!
The Fix!!
Here is what Moscow told me to ....
"For starters, lets do some simple stuff first. Following is a link to some ICS update files. There are 4 of them. I have already de-crypted them. Now, download each to a individual folder on your PC. You will see they are numbered. This is to keep them separate so you know which is which.
Now, choose one of them (really doesn't matter which one, but maybe start with the highest number first). Rename it to "update.zip" (make sure it is not "update.zip.zip" as this is a common mistake. If your PC doesn't show the .zip extension, just rename it to update)
Now, copy it to your external SD card. Power on your tablet holding Vol+ (or minus) and PWR. Continue pressing until you see text about installing the update in the upper left corner, then release. We'll see if it installs all the way. If after 15 minutes it doesn't (it may stop at about 25%), then PWR off, and rename and copy the next update file, and try that one. Might have to try all 4, so make sure your tab is fully charged.
If none of these install all the way, then life becomes a little more difficult......
Links to my server (large files 300+mb) (Note: these were live links - but because I don't have enough posts to post links, I replaced the "http" with SWV. You'll need to replace the SWV with http)
http://d-h.st/Zf8
http://d-h.st/2cm
http://d-h.st/gw8
http://d-h.st/KXI
Try that."
BUT WAIT - LET ME FILL YOU IN ON WHAT I DID - THAT MADE IT WORK FOR ME!
Do it this way!
1. When you go to the download sites - watch out - there are some "paid" spam downloaders there that want you to install a bunch of crap! Look for the plain, gray colored, download button. Don't click on any of the green or colored ones or you are screwed!
2. Once you do the downloads - you can expect to probably have to try each one - I did and it was the third one down (in the Windows File Explorer naming sequence). I can't tell you the name of which one, because I had to rename them as directed. I should have made a screen shot, but I didn't think of it.
3. RENAME THEM ON YOUR COMPUTER FIRST. This is what caused me so much initial trouble as I couldn't get the files to copy over to the SD card correctly. Now, you'll have to rename one, and if it doesn't work in a few moments, you'll have to rename it back to something else, and then try another one.
4. Format your SD card each time. I didn't want to risk having some residual files on my SD card - so I re-formatted it "quick format" each time BEFORE I copied the file over.
5. Copy the renamed file to your SD card and insert it in the A500 SD card slot.
6. Hold down the power button and the volume rocker (left or right side) - until you see wording start to appear on the top left side of the screen. Let go then and watch and see what happens.
7. The words told me it was erasing all data. Then it told me it was going to load the recovery icon.
8. It then loaded the green android robot! Note: Twice before it got to the robot and then the robot was on its side, layng down with an "i" icon on its belly. In other words, that recovery did NOT work. So, I started the process all over.
9. When it works - you will know it! The robot stays up and you can see a progress bar going across the bottom! Mine did not hang up, once it started to reload. Moscow did say it COULD hang up. So, read his instructions above.
AND THAT IS IT!
My tablet appears to be working fine now - I'll go start playing with it and downloading apps - but I think I am there!
Also, I am going to donate to Moscow Desire - because I would have PAID for this fix. You should do the same if it fixes yours.
My name is Steve Vance and I am thrilled to have been able to do this WITHOUT a ton of knowledge. The toughest thing you'll have to do is the "renaming" thing.
I hope it fixes your bricked A500 the way it fixed mine.

Now, last but not least. Get your CUID number and write it down in a safe place. You can find procedures (pretty simple) in the "Sticky Thread" in the Dev section near the top. You might need it one day.....

Thank you thank you thank you Moscow. I can not believe this but my tablet works. I gave up a couple months ago after trying everything under the sun (obviously not quite). But every direction I read meant I needed working drivers and I tried everything and so many different computers trying to get a driver to work. I gave up before I snapped it in half from pure frustration. That was a few months ago. Today I read this post and I also thank the original poster for posting these easy directions. Everyone who is struggling with the same thing I was needs to try this first, not last.
I am quite skint at the moment but when my cheque comes I will try to set aside a bit for you. I was willing to pay someone too, but no one could fix it, so I didn't have to pay anything. Thank you so very much.

GOOD LUCK ALL AND THANKS MOSCOW DESIRE!

recovery verified failed no cpuid, 4 zip not work

You are most certainly welcome and big Thanks! Am glad it worked. Sometimes the easy way works, before pulling out the "big guns"
Now, last but not least. Get your CUID number and write it down in a safe place. You can find procedures (pretty simple) in the "Sticky Thread" in the Dev section near the top. You might need it one day.....

Moscow. I have been reading so many threads and trying things out im going cu-cu.. but I tried the four zip files with no luck, and I have no cpuid. Just bought tablet yesterday for my boy, he was so happy. Just closed the internet by hitting home key, and bammm, just froze up. Waited and no responce so powered it off than on . Now just ACER LOGO, and a few times it went to the ANDROID LOGO. I know the a500 was rooted because of an app that checks it that I opened, and it said "rooted". Besides that I dont know anything else. But I tried the volume and power, seems like theres no recovery on this thing. Jus says, " Booting recovery kernal image. In red it says, Recovery verified failed. The magic words we all are familar with. without the cpuid and not being able to work with any of the 4 zip files, am I in the creek without a paddle. Can you resurrect this with a magic trick you have up your sleeve. If anyone can, I thought it would be you, rather pay someone on here than ACER.
Once more a bump of thanks
Well, it's been four years and my ACER 500 bit the dust again. So I dug through this old thread and found my original notes. Printed them off and re-staged my ACER 500 and it is up and running once more.
Again - another thank you to Moscow Desire

For Those That Have Not Unlocked Their Bootloaders (XT926)...

...wouldn't this be an option (people more in the know, please correct me if I am wrong):
- Use one of the utilities to revert your system back down to ICS (4.0.4)
- Unlock the bootloader / root / do whatever you want to do that you can't when on the latest software...
- Re-take all of the updates to get you back up to 4.1.2 (or use the utility to get back to 4.1.2)
Easy-peasy, pending the updates that block the unlock exploit are reverted as well when the software is reverted.
I do understand that one would lose all their precious info (contacts, pics, vids, apps, etc.), but making a hard copy list of that stuff (or a backup of some sort - Backup Assistant Plus, DropBox, and Titanium Backup to Cloud storage come to mind) may be worth it to get the bootloader unlocked. To save pics, vids, etc. one could also just drop all of that stuff on to their computer before reverting as well.
Just thinking of a way to help those that cannot unlock but want to... maybe it'll help rid the forum of the "new unlock method needed please" threads as well
From what i've gathered, downgrading the phone from current firmware will not undo their patch that blocks unlocking/rooting.

along with the many "new unlock method needed please" post, there are many post just like yours, to which in every case we "in the know" state "cant be done/will not work"
as previously stated, the files that need to be modified to unlock can not be reverted.
Yeah, like Bwen said, it's not going to happen. The ability to downgrade was locked up on the update that also patched the unlock. Many have tried, many have failed, and a few have bricked.
1) I apologize if it came off as offensive about the stopping all the "new unlock method needed please" posts. It wasn't meant to be. Was simply thinking that new posts like that wouldn't develop, and the older ones would naturally die off, thus letting us all happily and jointly move on to newer topics or issues and solve them when they arrive. I have seen lotsa posts from people needing a new method to unlock, I haven't seen any along the thought process of trying the method I (apparently unoriginally) suggested.
2) Of course I did not expect this to be a new idea, but hadn't seen it posted so I thought I'd give it a whirl and perhaps help others out if it hadn't been thought of... A shot in the dark of an idea.
3) To receiving the knowledge that it cannot be done this way - ah nuts. Oh well, tried to help.
4) I'm glad I went and did the unlock when I did, prior to the corrective action taken by Motorola.
5) Anyone know what caused Motorola to make the fix? Since the XT925 is able to be unlocked, I'm thinking they don't personally care whether people unlock or not... I'm guessing that VeeZeeDub may have forced their hand to make the correction since VeeZeeDub doesn't want the phones unlocked? (disclaimer: I apologize up front if this is not a new topic)
I would blame it on VZW, more than anything else. Moto is somewhat trying to push towards being more dev friendly, but VZW is far from it.
I agree that it must be Verizon. Sorry for the duplicated thanks in the post above.

No worries man. I know I can be abrasive and it only gets amplified through the internet, and I apologize if my post came off that way.

it really doesn't matter that this was posted again, you could post it 10 more times and i guarantee within a couple days someone will ask again.
the problem is, there is an ever increasing group of people who want answers spoon fed to them because they are too lazy to read for 5 minutes to find it them self. that may sound harsh, but if you have been around the forums for at least a few years helping people its easy to see it progressing.
i have provided help on various forums through the past few years and the majority of the time when i dont have an answer, i throw some key words into a search engine and come up with the answer within minutes.
its not that im much more knowledgeable than most, its that i would rather read a few minutes and learn how to do something rather than have someone feed it to me. thats why you very rarely see me ask any questions or ask for help. 99% of the answers are out there some where, all you have to do is look...
:semi rant concluded: just my opinion, take it as you will...
I know that we can't load prior software as it won't over write the exploit fix but, here's what I don't understand. When a phone gets sent back for repair, I would think there's a way that they wipe the phone out completely removing any trace of it's previous owner. Including the traces of a new update, boot loader...etc. Then install a completely fresh copy.
Why can't that technique been done to reinstall the previous software that allows boot loader unlocking? Wouldn't a cell phone repair shop have this capability? If you put a new board in the phone, can it be flashed with any software?
Or even in the refurbish process, not everything gets wiped?

I'm sure moto or verizon can do it, but they have access to the software that contains the encrypted key that is necessary.
But, in any event, they probably would just update it to the latest software if that hasn't happened already.
I got lucky. When I had to replace my RAZR MAXX, they "upgraded" me (for free) to a RAZR MAXX HD. I was lucky enough to have it come in with the 9.16 version, which meant I was able to unlock it, which I did immediately.
The main thing to understand is, if you don't unlock at the 9.14/9.16 version BEFORE applying any other updates, there is NO way to unlock the bootloader. It was an exploit that wasn't meant to be there. Said exploit has now been patched, and if you didn't take advantage of it when it was there, then you have no one to blame, not even Verizon or Moto since it was a security issue that they didn't know existed.
