LCD problem? - G1 General

Hello,
I've just got my replacement phone (the previous one had mechanical problems) and the display seems a bit strange with this new device.
There are visible banding effects in color gradients, (web pages, pictures) I know the Lcd has only 65K colors, but I don't remember those bands being so strong on my previous device.
Could you fellow G1 owners check this on your device please? I am in Hungary, Europe and I don't know any other G1 owners here (you know it's not available here, actually mine is an ADP1).
It's easy to check, the effect is very visible on http://www.google.com/news (Google international news mobile site) in the Android browser. It's slightly visible in the dark blue title bar, more in the light blue bar below and very strongly in the "Sections" bar far below.
Please check it and tell me what you have found...
Thanks,
Peter

I see the same issues with google/news. I think it has to do with google's site and/or the g1's browser. Here's a few high quality jpeg gradients Black-White, RainBow and Blue-Red. Unfortunately google compresses them and they look like junk online. So, here's a .zip of the three gradients your can download right to your phone and view with Astro, or extract to pc etc. They should look fairly smooth on the g1, better on pc tho..
use there gradients for w/e you choose.

Hello sonikamd,
Thanks for your help! Interestingly your test pictures look better (smoother) in the standard picture viewer app than in Astro's viewer. Can you confirm that?
Also how old is your device? It looks like that mine (the replacement device) is very old, it's serial number is lower than what I have sent back (purchased in december).
Thanks,
Peter

Just one last quick question: on the incoming call screen there are strange lines appear, do anyone see those on the G1 or it is just me?
Click on the picture to see what I mean.

No, I am not crazy - I am a graphics artist and really sensitive to things like that.
Thanks,

Hi lilithpro,
Thanks for the image, however you won't see the effect on a screencapture (like you attached). I made the pic in Photoshop (from a captured emulator screen) to show the effect - I exaggerated the effect in the pic a little.
You should check your device's lcd during an incoming call to see it. I think it is something to do with the lcd panel. Today I managed to check an other G1 and it showed that effect, too.
So it seems it is not my ADP1's problem.

Purple spot is chromatic abbrevation (look here for issue & fix)

EDIT TITLE: Not only chromatic abbrevation!
Hi. I did some 'shooting' today with my HD2 and saw the purple tint in ex green colors vs blue sky. You can also see the purple tint on grey surfaces too, aso..
_Some_ of the purple colors is simply not going to be fixed, because its something called chromatic abbreviation and thats an optic issue. But im also thinking its an software issue that HTC have not seen yet. Manual whitebalancing is often or always better than the auto-setting in HD2. And one other thing.. If your picture is underexposed, you have even more pink tinting.
As mentioned. If you try set the whitebalance yourself, you may get by the pink issue in almost every picture. 2 out of 10 pics is now 'normal' and i have minor/none editing in photoshop. Maybe every picture is good when picture are prop whitebalanced and not underexposed.
Excuse my english, im norwegian..
I also think some of the tweaks here are responsible for the pink tint. Earlier photos from before tweaking have no pink tint. Someone running a ''clean'' rom here to confirm? Ive only applied some tweaks from '[REF] *Leo Hints, Tips and Registry Tweaks* - Updated 14th May 2010.' and 'Boost performance tips (All ROMS) -NEW updates 11/2/10'.
Maybe turning camera tweaks back to default is going to fix this..?.. I have no time for hard-reset, so if anyone schedule a hard-reset and having the tint problem.. Please take before/after photos.
for what it's worth, I had the pink stain practically on every past rom that I used.
The current rom I use, based on 2.13 (and I just reinstall everything system related through sashimi, so it's actually the same config with different rom) doesn't show this problem, being the camera settings the same... and I'm not at all displeased
im getting awful purple/pink coulouring on my photo's too, stock virgin mobile rom ( piggyback off t-mobile) with few mods installed
it was broad daylight and its made the pic look awful is there a fix or not?
edit: pics look perfect on the phone but once uploaded to facebook they gain the tint :/
so theres no fixes for this?
here are some examples to try and get some feedback from someone.......anyone?
first 3 are the widescreen option and the last 4 are non-widescreen
widescreen mode 5mp

Any way to fix wallpaper gradients??

It seems that any wallpaper with a gradient or any shading or glowing is displayed like in 8-bit style. What I mean by that is this.

Its really making alot of wallpapers look hideous and would like to know what I can do to make it look the way it should. Thanks in advance.
Seems like a little help and a little research does wonders these days.
Just so this can be used as a reference, i'm gonna go a little in dept here.

might try adding some noise to the pic. just a little bit. I used to have to do this on my touch pro 1+2 on some walls
let us know how they turn out

These methods work in getting rid of the banding lines but what I figured out was to keep the quality, you need to do alot of tweaking and messing around. What I found out was adding a gaussian blur on a new layer thats slightly transparent and adding a little noise on a overlay layer thats slightly transparent is the trick.
This took me 2 mins to do. (Its 6:22am on fourth of July, I'll put up better examples later)

What got me thinking was some of my camera pictures and other pictures in the gallery look stunning but anything I transfer via pc had horrible banding. Didnt make any sense at all. I'm no expert but adding a little blur and noise almost tricks the evo's screen.
great idea! thanks, now i can finally get some good wallpapers onto my evo.
How about sharing the exact settings you used? Or even better would be to post a PSD template that only requires people to paste their wallpaper (or possibly copy a layer style)
Download wallpaper set and save from the market. It fixes this problem.

New Nexus S owner - quality issues

Hi everyone,
I'm a former N1 owner and just bought a new NS i9020a from Negri Electronics and I'm finding a few funky things that I'd like to run by you guys. I'm suspecting that the phone might be defective, especially 1 and 2 below. Anyone else have these issues, or perhaps they are really non-issues?
1) My screen has pretty bad horizontal banding. It's most obvious in the notification pulldown, but is also noticeable with certain wallpapers, dead pixel test apps, etc. Please see screenshots below. Has anyone else had this, and do they fade away over time?
2) The galaxy live wallpaper has a layer of static "stars" or something above the actual spiraling galaxy. This layer kinda looks like stars, but some are splotchy/smeary. The galaxy itself also has a pink border/box around it too. I've factory reset twice and the same thing happens. Maybe my wallpaper is defective? See screenshots.
3) The screen in general has pretty yellow whites, especially in low brightness settings. I am not wowed as I thought I would have been with the SAMOLED screen.
4) When in the camera app, the picture doesnt actually take up the entire window. There are a few columns/rows of black pixels surrounding the picture. It's not centered either. See screenshot.
5) my volume rocker has a middle click, so there's up, middle, and down.
Banding:

i'm on an ns4g, and i have the exact same problems. its not big enough to bug me though. btw, the samoled is more known for their deep blacks than their whites.
I would get that exchanged asap but since you bought it from Negri you will hard time.
i have a i9023 and got exactly same black line in camera app, it just doesn't take up the entire windowi believe it's a "feature"
i think "middle" button in volume rocker is normal, cause every android device i owned it was present, sometimes when you press it, your system gets lagged for a while, like 5 secs, i believe it's something related to debug setting, also you can use it to disable power button in cw recovery (don't know why)
the rest of your problem i can't actually help, since my screen is not the same!
edit: when you change from photo to video in camera app, don't these lines/rows change at all?!
Camera looks normal, just like mine.
Banding looks bad though. Possibly defective display. If you have warranty, you should exchange.

[FIX] Yellow/Green/Red White Balance fix without Root. Yellowish tint , Yellow tint

Hello all, after getting my LG G4 yesterday I have noticed the screen on my unit exhibits a yellowish tint, especially whites look too yellow for my liking. Now, because of Boot-gate I don't want to root it this early just in case ( although I have a 607 serial number so chances of that happening are significantly smaller.)
So I researched some fixes, tested some apps and came to the conclusion that https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=co.uk.quickdoc.screenbalance app is the best solution if you are not rooted.
Because, unlike all other apps, it is not an overlay but rather uses the built-in accessibility service baked into android, it is much more accurate, is system wide ( so yes, the virtual buttons as well!) and is more energy efficient.
Now the problem is that functionality is pretty limited if you are not on the pro version. By any means , use ''your way'' to get the app because I love to support devs but asking 3 euros is just too much for a very simple app. Please support the developer however because without him we would not have had this amazing solution
My settings are as follows: (Please note that the screenshots are not INDICATIVE of the real thing, in real life it is much less blue.)

Before and After
Feel free to post your configuration as this is still not perfect, I would love to see them and try them out to come to that perfectly calibrated white balance
Tips and tricks: Use the LG G4's feature to pin the app, this way the app will stay even when you clear all
... ( add suggestions I will add them)
Hello Xdekker I got same problem too. Thanks for ur conclusion. I have SN 607 too and bought from Europe. Maybe our G4 production in same batch.
Then I downloaded the app, pin and block the notification. Its look much better now. I hope LG update the system to add white control in the developer option just like Nexus 5X.
Sorry for my bad English...

[Q] Green glow at top of screen

Green glow, only shows on black or dark screens. Tested with a burn check app for this picture. I toggled all screen options on and off in various configurations, including all the adpative stuff and Soli. No changes. When I press the screen, a normal press anywhere, the glow will change slightly. I'm approved for an RMA, but I'm wondering if anyone else can see this before I do that.
I used night sight for the picture, so the green glow is more pronounced than with the naked eye.
Have not noticed this on mine.
Where did your purchase it from? Hopefully the exchange is smooth!

Purchased from Google. Already approved for an RMA, just don't want to do that if it's widespread, or if it's not a real issue (is not consistently glowing, sometimes it's there, sometimes not).

Yeah send it back.
The one and only place I've seen anything remotely close is the YouTube music app. Screenshot brightened to enhance glow....
That's intended, though. To show you when the radar is looking for gestures.

Right, at first I thought that's what my glow was, Soli being active. It's in the same exact location, which would make suspicious it has something to do with the Soli light. Thanks for the help all

Just disable motion sense, launch spotify or youtube music and check if the glow still shows on top of the screen. If not, then it's for sure the indication of soli radar checking for movement. However it should not be green...
