Touch HD in Canada - Touch HD General

HI Guys,
Looking to buy a Touch HD to run on the Rogers network in Canada.
Keen to hear from others who are already using the phone in Canada to hear of their experiences of the device running on Rogers?
Also seen that the 850 3G band device is now available in Australia so was thinking this might give me 3G in Canada. Anybody imported one into N. America and had any luck with this?
Thanks,
P

I have one on Fido/Rogers near Toronto, works great besides no 3G. Such a solid device and edge is fast enough for web surfing and email on devices like this due to bottlenecks in hardware. Wifi, Bluetooth and GPS are also strong on the Touch HD too.
The Telestra model may work on 850, mine is 900/2100 though

Thanks for the info. Has anybody actually got the Telestra model working on 3g in north america?

I agree with Zero...everything except 3G works well here (Vancouver). I've even got Caller Name Display going, which is great.

I am also using one here in Toronto. As with all above, everything works well except 3g.

Toronto here too. Works great. I use WIFI mostly and it works great. Won't pay the ridiculous monthly fees that Rogers charges for data. I bought mine from pdaplaza.ca in Quebec.

i think all of us got it early before the Telsa one came out so none of us will be using 3G here.

I just flashed the Telsa rom.....still no 3G.......suck....

Yes I would get the Telstra HD as well. Even if it's slightly more money. The 3G is worth it.

Those of you having one working, could you tell me what rom you have...
i have trouble registering into network and when i do...signal is ther but cannot make calls or receive them.
thanks

I have the T8285 (Telstra version) in Montreal. Works great on 3G network (Rogers). I have a solid and fast HSDPA when browsing the Internet.
It was working with original ROM, but flashed a Dutty 6.1 ROM the first day. I flashed few Dutty's 6.1 updates, and now I run Dutty 6.5 R8 without any issue. Those last ROMs are "shipped" with Radio 1.14, but I reverted to Radio 1.10 because the sound level was to low for my taste with Radio 1.14 (but was still working).
I have also tested a few 6.5 Miri ROM (working well).
So, I did not experienced any issue with any ROM...

Touch HD with Fido
Hello, I am using touch hd from sweden and now I am using with fido in Kitchener Ontario, but I can not get good signals and hardly can call any one and can't recieve calls, however if I am outside then I can get better signals and can call or recieve. I have a feeling it is because of 900 frequency. Is any one have idea what I can do? Thanks

touch HD T8282 working very well in Toronto except 3G. I have stock 1.56 rom WWE radio 1.13.25.24 very clear and strong signal even indoors

You need T8285 hardware. no matter you do (flashing radio and rom). It won't change the UMTS signal to 850. It is hardware related.

Anyone can dump their Telstra rom here to share, that would be great for people who are in Canada using Touch HD, Thanks.
I just tried...
"Even Flashed the Telstra rom, still cant get the 850 3G!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" but
the display of model have changed from T8282 to T8285
You can get it from the htc website..

Really? I am running this rom and it has telstra all over it... pretty restrictive to be honest
that's because you have to put your devices serial number and it picks the best ROM suited to the device. I have "RUU_BlackStone_Telstra_WWE_1.21.841.1_Radio_52.57.25.30_1.10.25.25_Ship.exe" version if your interested? I'll provide a download link when I get home from work...
Excuse my ignorance...but why would you want a telstra ROM in Canada?

People are hoping that the Telstra model will work with North American 3G, and that there's some way to extract that functionality via software.
I have yet to hear a consensus on whether it's possible or not, though. One poster will say that without a doubt it's impossible, that lack of 3G is 100% hardware based, and another will say that is most definitely is a software/radio ROM issue.
I can't wait for some sort of verdict.
i know what u mean if it aint the t8285 model it won't work with 850 umts...
heres a link to the rom anyway guys... http://dutch7.com/blackstone
850 on hd t8282
I'm not sure how or waht the difference is between 8282 and 8285. However, I have a 8282 bought in Australia from, I believe, a reputable firm. While it didn't come with the Telstra Rom it was advertised as being NextG compatable. I get full download speed (compared to my Diamond) and the H symbol is showing most of the time. I had always thought that the 850 compatability was more to do with Radio's than hardware. Especially when this phone has been sold in both markets for a while now. But maybe I'm just imagining the speed. The HD is not yet as good as the Diamond indoors out on the fringes of Melbourne where I live. But it is as good as most Nokias.
well i guess testing it wont hurt. i would want to give it a try too.

Yours originally is T8285 but they flashed the T8282 rom, thats why it shows that is T8282.
My phone is T8282 after i flashed the Telstra rom it become T8285.....but still not compatible of the NextG
The "H" is HSDPA and isnt 850 dependant. Just means that it goes to 7.2/2.0 which again isnt 850 dependant. NextG, like North America is 850mhz. You can have HSDPA on any 3G network (Optus, 3, Voda etc) which use 1800/2100 if im not mistaken?
8285 is the NextG/850 version. Nearly all Telstra-sold phones are 850 versions. Have to be very careful as they have different Radio Hardware

Does the Telstra Touch HD (T8285) Support Vodafone 3G

Hi,
I've found lots of conflicting info regarding the Telstra Touch HD and its support for frequencies other than NextG.
I'd like to know if anyone in Australia has a Vodafone usim in the Telstra Touch HD, and if they can connect with UMTS/HSDPA.
Cheers!
I have the T8285 model and it supports 850 & 2100, and I believe Vodfone operates its 3G network on 2100Mhz UMTS.
Cheers for the info, much appreciated. Its a pity this thing is a Telstra exclusive at the moment, as I don't really want to grab an imported one, warranty etc.
Now I think I gotta go to the bank. I've got a stupid $800 limit on EFTPOS....
Just do the same as the rest of us, buy the Telstra phone and flash the ROM with USPL and one of Dutty's ROMS (or one of your choice)
You will end up with the phone you are looking for and you can flash it back to the Telstra ROM by downloading it from HTC if you need to take the phone back.
that's exactly what i've done. yet i can't seem to get any of dutty's ROMs past version 2.6 to work on the T8285.
what about the optus network, will it work on that ..

Diamond2 3G US - Coming Soon?

Hello all, I am hoping to get my hands on a Diamond2 that supports the 850 3G freq, and have found a couple of places that have it on a "pre-order" right now, but no dates listed.
Has anyone had any information as to when the unbranded Diamond2 might drop with this US 3G support for AT&T use? I realize AT&T has their own version of the unit, but it is not exactly a Diamond2 and it looks slightly fugly in my opinion.
Anyone with any sources on this, or estimates on the US 3G variety? I realize it is possible to have an Australian version that would have the 850 support too...

The AT&T is EXACTLY the TD2 but no front facing camera and a Different housing.
Never heard of this version. Just get the AT&T one or live with edge as I do.
Hmmm, well there should definitely be a Telstra branded Diamond2 at the very least, and that would give us the 3G here in the US.

HTC HD2, Telstra and Australia! [RELEASE DATES!]

Hi guys,
I received word late yesterday from my contacts that Telstra will be supplying the HD2 exclusively for at least 2-3 months on the NextG network.
No word on pricing yet but I have got a loose release date! For us Aussies the wait isn't too great which is a bit of a surprise for me, I thought we'd wind up being last! So without further ado:
Just wanted to let you know we finally have an idea on the Touch HD2;
Touch HD 2 – Due for release mid - late January. Exclusive to Telstra for 2 - 3 months. Launching with Windows Mobile 6.5

I guess anyone not on Telstra can just use an imported one... Blue Fly Mobile are selling them for $900 at the moment.
Do you know if the "official" Australian version will have anything special that a UK one, for example, doesn't have?

A NextG compatible version is what I am after so I am holding out for it.
Basically Telstra bloatware will be the only special thing on it haha. Which I'll remove with cooking my own ROM. And of course NextG compatibility.
Hopefully the main difference will be that it will have the 850 3G band, like the Touch HD did, which will make it useable on most of AT&T's 3G network in the US.

Yea, a sweet US 3G radio.
it seems a telstra rom already leaked (841 is telstra rom code)
ftp://rom:[email protected]/Leo_HD2/Official/Leo_1.49.841.1_21869_WWE_OS.NB.rar
btw, what does it mean that the phone is only exclusive for 2-3 months? So for those 2-3mos, you can only get it through telstra (no e-retailers)? Can you get it sim-free during this time or after that time?

it simply means that in Australia, the Australian mobile phone networks like Vodaphone, Telstra, Optus, T-mobile,etc will have to wait a few months before they can have the option of selling it on their networks.
you can still get the device anywhere else in the world unlocked and as long as the device has the right network frequencies for your SIM card then you'll be fine. there are slightly different HD2's made for the world markets, because not all countries use the same network frequencies (USA being the odd-man-out of the world)
i bought my HD2 from the UK (Handtech) delivered for Au $840. the frequencies are a match for my 3mobile SIM card and the device is "unlocked" so i don't have any bull**** about vendor locking and software bloat.
Telstra/AT&T
Please post here when it is available through on online retailer with the 850Mhz Band so that US buyers on AT&T can rejoice and spend some dough...
Thanks
Am I reading this correct that the HD2 will not work on NextG? Is there a fix for this?

I highly doubt a Telstra released 3G mobile wouldn't work on their NextG network, kinda defeats the point.

Because the HD2 runs on UMTS 900/2100MHz. You have to wait for HTC to release another model that's NextG compatible (runs 850/2100MHz UMTS) in early 2010.

use it as a $800 coaster.
or sell it.
I'm using the HD2 imported from overseas 2 weeks ago through one of those dodgy Australian online retailers (electronicbazaar.com.au) and I'm happily using my nextG simcard without problems.
The phone was shipped from HK.
I have no problems browsing or coverage but technically I shouldn't be getting access to the network.
I guess the question remains as to whether I'm accessing the nextG network or not. The carrier name is "3G 3Telstra" on the dialer and I get the "H" symbol come up on the phone. That looks good enough for me.
This information, plus p3ngwin's use of the phone on 3Mobile suggests it's not accurate to say that we can't use an unbranded Leo in Australia...
@tchoklat - have you tried using the phone yet with your NextG SIM?
Yes it fails to log on and I only see the odd 'G' or 'E' come up suggesting sporadic connection to the 3G network, not NextG. I understand that the 'H' means HSPDA or NextG

In a way you have access to Telstra 3G but not NextG. Read this http://www.austech.info/137073-post16.html
Telstra 3G = UMTS 2100 which provides 60% population coverage
Telstra NextG = UMTS 850 which provides 99% population coverage
I have a NextG sim when I was using my TP2 (the sim is my Leo now) and on my Leo I only get the EDGE network and no NextG.
Just what I have found as we have no or limited Edge where I live so the phone is basically useless. I have listed it on Ebay for anyone interested.
Ebay item number 110471705953
thanks all.
Tony
I'll tell you what, I have the unlocked import of the HD2 in the USA on at&t and the edge data on this phone seems as good as my last 3g phone. I think the speed of the phone is making up for it. Now of coarse, WITH the 3G coverage is another story but the edge is acceptable to me on this device.

Anyone Used a TMOUS HD2 in Asia or Europe with 3g?

I understand the bands. The confusion is that TMOUS uses 2100 up and 1700 down (or vice versa) for 3g, so some think that it can't handle the Euro and Asian 2100 up and down. There's no clear specs that I can see where 2100 is a standalone for up and down for 3g data.
I've read threads here from supposedly knowledgeable people saying that it can and can't work. That is why I'd like someone who has actually tried it rather than guesses and speculation.
I hope you're right and thanks for the info.

I'm with you and I agree the labeling is somewhat inconsistent.
However, the consistency I've seen in any official docs, including the manual and FCC is if they list 1700 in the official specs, it's FDD-IV AWS (1700+2100), and if they list 2100, it's FDD-I (1900+2100).
In fact, there has never been any official docs that explicitly list what the up/down frequencies are so you can definitely take it as Band-I and Band IV.
Band-I can be used with most Asia/Euro carriers
I hope you guy's are right. I'll feel much better when someone actually uses a TMOUS HD2 in Europe or Asia with 3G an reports back.

remember that the G1 works in europe fine with the 3g. us g1 has been used in europe so i don't see the HD2 being any different. if not call htc and tell them you will be traveling abroad with your HD2 and will it work in europe with 3g.

True, but I think the HD2 uses a different radio that is part of the Snapdragon chipset, I may be totaly wrong, but that's why I'm so dubious.
Good idea, I never thought of calling HTC. Although, I think I recall a post by someone doing that before the phone came out and the HTC rep just recited the supported bands instead of giving a definitive yes or no to 3g working in Asia/Europe. Nothing like real world use from someone actually doing it I suppose. Some of the reps at these companies know less than we do about their own products, lol. Either way a call to HTC can't hurt, thanks for the suggestion.

Thank you. I'll be looking forward to hearing your response.
I called HTC customer support and the rep told me that Asia, Europe, and the US are on different "networks", so we will not receive 3g outside the US. I'm pretty sure the rep has no clue. To be honest, if the rep told me it would work I would still not feel relieved, they seem to not know the most basic of things about their products.
We'll just have to wait till someone here reports back.
Since US HD2 has band 1 and 4 UMTS, it'll surely work in Europe and Asia (except in band 8 area).

Do you get 3G service?
I sent an email to HTC regarding 3G and this is what I got:
"Thank you for contacting HTC.
With reference to your query, normally HTC HD2 does support 3G network. However, since this is an US local customize phone, we would suggest you to contact with HTC US for double check. You can select the country for US to drop them an email to check that.
Thank you for your continuous support of our products and services. Should you require further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us again. "
