Not really. These all are panels that aren't very useful because it is faster to just start the program from the shortcut menu. What I expected from Sony would be one panel for one of their multimedia devices. One panel should emulate a really good walkman multimedia player, one should be a really good cybershot photo panel and one has to be a playstation gaming panel. Maybe they could do a paper and news panel for the morning coffee.
I find myself to just use the SE-panel, the navigation panel and sometimes the multimedia panel (I'm better off with s2p for music) because I consider all the other panels useless (e.g. why install the SPB weather as panel when it takes less time to start it as a program and close it as well?

i only use one panel and thats the sony 1 panel. i just create shortcuts to my mostly used programs on se panel. i think panels are basically just another skin of the today screen.

The thing is that sony has had no panel which aimed the basic function like writing SMS, flip through people and so on. Things like the tf3D panel, which I use. I really hope that pointui change this fault. SE1 and SE2 panel is not usable because it has no dynamic in it. Its only like a starter. Dynamic is generell a problem of the X1 because you can't change the mediapanel without shutting down the running music and so on.
Best wishes

Interesting, how opinions differ.
For me, the SE panel is the only useful one, because it has all the information and all shortcuts I need on just one page. There is no need for flipping around the pages or scrolling through lists. The TF3D looks nice, I agree, but it's not usable in my opinion. I tried TF3D and quickly returned to the SE panel which satisfies me totally. No *bling bling* for me, please!
Here are some PREVIEWS:
gtrab: I did a search before my post and couldn't find any reference to the upcoming panels, so I assumed that it was a yet undiscussed topic over here. Sorry if you or anyone else did a similar post before me

Exactly the same here. Instead of scrolling&paging almost all I need on ONE page! I almost never see any other menus!

Thx.

There are actually more than one
You can this with WAD ( & WA2 ). And with these you can make your own graphics...
And then the martian over at Marsware suddenly emerged from oblivion, and release a today-analog-clock-beta, you'd have to register to the wiki over at Marsware.... ( this is btw skinable too )
And then there's the old SPB Time....also skinable, but a program you'd have to execute to see the time...
I use ( and prefer ) the WAD/WA2-sollution, but the new beta from Marsware seems promising...
Good hunting...
It's not available yet, but I made one a while back. Have to package this up at some point.

Battery Pack
Battery Pack Pro has a small analog clock option that displays in the Today plug in.

I have to correct you in this Vijay, it is available, it's a beta, but available...
Flipside: sure, if you're me! I write so many "prototype" apps, many just get forgotten! I like VJEphemeris, but it's likely that VJSihaya, if it ever sees the light of day, will entirely replace the Today screen (at least mine!) with an emulated and improved Today function.
It will certainly have a floating clock on the "desktop", I like those, so it's likely VJEphemeris will just fall off the edge of my world
However, I use my Magician more than my Universal, so it's worth me continuing it for that device... so yeah, tis available to a very limited circle!

Interesting. Have you guys ever tried Today+?
Requires some considerable hackery, and is resource heavy, but will produce analog clocks and a gazillion more things as well. Very powerful. Hard work.
V
VJ, is it possible to have your beta plugin for the analog clock on today's screen?
Not really GiGi. I haven't updated it for a long time, I've got no time because I'm full time on all of my old stuff first. And the version I use is unfortunately specific to my device (ie no config for launch items etc).
One day I'll try to put it into its own plugin, but I'm sure there will be other solutions before then.
Apologies once again.

Does anyone know of a program that allows you to skin the Taskbar? I have tried using Wisbar, but it uses too much memory and bogs down my system.
It would be great if there was a quicker program that used less memory. And I don't care about the other features Wisbar has, I just want to skin the Taskbar and the Start menu button.
I guess not!

But it is the skinning that uses the memory and slows down the device.
None of the other features of Wisbar Advance 2 are memory-intensive at all.
Any application that skins your device will be a memory hog, period.
By taskbar, you mean the top bar right?
One kinda solution that isn't cpu intensive is to use my VJToggleToday II app (in alpha release right now though) to replace the start bar.

Dude, that looks ****ing sweet; I have been waiting with great anticipation for it ever since I first heard about it!
Is it skinnable?
VJToggleToday merely shifts the Today Screen, allowing you to show your today plugins through - so I'm using my PhoneAlarm skin at the top of the screen to adjunct the start bar.
I haven't worked on VJEphemeris or VJSihaya (the more 'evolved' version of the idea) for months - I wrote them both as a proof of concept idea, but since then I've decided to put off further development until I feel competent to tackle all of the things I want to put into it. Both are evidently (overly) skinnable.
I've been working on a new app for a while, it's completely innocent, just a simple text editor, but it's a testbed for features that I'm going to be using in my new apps (ie a new skinning engine and GUI). That's (realistically) coming soon.
V
vijay555... what other apps do you use on your today screen? The bottom half looks like you havea last call and last email displaying on your today, correct?
itesla: that's an old plugin I wrote once, but it's not been released yet. It's called VJEphemeris. I'm taking a break from it while I learn some new stuff, so that I can add the new features I want to it.
It does show missed calls and previews received SMSs etc. There are many hidden popup menus etc, but as I said, that'll all change in the final version, if and when I get around to finishing it!

Hey Vijay, I have been using your ToggleToday program in conjunction with PhoneAlarm. I really like it, but there are a couple things that I miss: the clock, and the OK button.
I was wondering, would it be possible for me to use one of those third-party button programs like MagicButton or vBar, and then move over the signal status?
For the clock, I wasn't sure if there was any possible solution, unless PhoneAlarm has a feature that allows you to display it.
I believe PhoneAlarm has a clock feature built in now, you can certainly edit the skin to include one.
I never use the ok button in the corner, I use VJOkButt 100% of the time, and that's compatible with 3rd party task managers that use the ok button.
I don't quite understand about "move over the signal status". How do you mean?
Something to consider, which I have't tried but should work, is to use a phonealarm skin with transparency - if you leave a gap in your phone alarm skin, where the original clock is - you might be able to allow the original "start bar" to shine through the gap...
But anyway, PhoneAlarm does have a clock feature, I believe.

Over in the Elf forum we love the htc cube. this is an application that has sides and a face. one side has general apps, one has multimedia apps, and one contacts and phone.
it is very useful but cannot be fully modified.
We all love the cube and want to reconfigure it but cannot quite get it right...transformation issues, and some icons that cannot change, etc.
I wonder if someone could do a similar app that was more configurable? if the animation was too hard what about movement like Tene's Contact Manager or a dissolve transformation ???
Sadly I am no longer a coder but would be happy to donate for such an app...
just thinking out load,
Sam.

This is a small test of a work-in-progress.:
http://rapidshare.com/files/43755638/FlashBox.zip.html
the "oficial" site is actually a portuguese forum:
http://www.pocketpt.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=16424
i am really contemplating on the same ideas as well.. but having ideas without any knowledge in programming really sucks for me..
i stumbled this very nice transition animation thingies which are said written in dotNET framework 2..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOMrPz56OVo
link to the developer can be found here
the project is made only for smartphones but i think the transitions switches and its idea can be used in a revolutionary PPC launcher of some sort..
i quite don't like having a launcher that eats the whole screen (just like the touchflo cube), hiding the top and bottom bars, giving the user an illusion of having a "new" and "exciting" interface - but then after you select something, you'll be pulled back to the same windows mobile interface..
maybe it's better to just stick to what Windows mobile looks like, but yet, giving it something flashy and worth seeing instead.. just like cool transitions..
maybe the swipe gesture can be used to flip the contents of the screen instead (including the top and bottom bars) rather than rotating a full screen cube.. i think it'll definitely load and feel faster than summoning a full screen application and redrawing the default interface and the launched program afterwards..
just a thought though..
That is pretty cool...hopefully it can be applied to touch screens as well.
Some excellent additional thoughts and ideas. For me a fullscreen app works best as it allows the touch interface to look much better than wm6 and gives me more 'elbow' room when using my fingers to control the application.
The flash solution looks good but I would prefer to minimise memory demands by loading as little additional software as possible.
Mind you I am no longer a coder and if it works and avoids devouring all my memory I will be VERY happy indeed.
All the best,
Sam.
Orb Interface Concept
Hello
I thought of a new interface idea that would be finger friendly and everything. Read about it on my XDA post here:
I think it would be a great interface, but I need some programers to make it happen. Get the word out about this project, and maybe something will happen.
Thanks,
Andrew
I lack the prgramming skill to make this happen, but this idea is way to revolutionary to WM imo.
If someone could look into making this happen i would be more then grateful. It goes like this - A multiple homescreen switcher,
scrollable by flicking horizontally on the screen. Like touch cube or something totally different?,
customizable anims, etc. etc. Different plugins allowed on each homescreen.
Programmers join!
Could we live without his ??!
Any ideas welcome !!
something sismilar can be achieved with wisbar desktop, also a software likt that one you suggesting will eat a lot of resources in switching the today screens and to support a lot of today plugins...
it is not impossible, but it is hard to achieve
As you mentioned "homescreen", I would presume that you are using a smartphone rather than PDA-phone (i.e. with touch screen). There is a software out there that supports multiple Today screen (not freeware though). However, I heard from many that the software isn't that well written or just the fact that WM5/6+HTC stuff aren't powerful enough to run too many Today plugins.
rlToday and MortScripts
Actually you can do what you are asking using rlToday and MortScripts, By Creating MortScripts that Change Which Today PlugIns are enabled per "Page" and even which rlToday Skin is used. One Example of how to do this can be found here.
You can always look Here
V2R Multidesk is very neat piece of software, but it is a lil heavy
idea is as old as WAD is.
and it is BEST idea - since author made WAD standalone - without WA2, which is just ridiculous hog.

,
WAD "todays" are not prefetched, so memory requirements are LOW(i said LOW).
of course, there's always POCKETAGE, which is best freeware thing i ever seen(and i've seen MANY things).
it takes more mem(preloading of today plugs and icons), but on other hand it uses png's with transparency for icons, WAD uses tga's which are 4x bigger.
if you are able to beat these, you are god.
any good links to Pocketage in english?
I was thinking of the cube always set to active, to act as your today screen. With your wallpaper on it,
with different icons/anims and ability to change size of icons and placement on the today screen .

Keep the requests coming!

How bout some XPANEL shots, and the nifty looking media browser/player thingy. Thx
tjex,
could you post a photo of the X1 sitting on a table, with the keyboard open? Does it topple over? I'd like to see how much the screen comes up due to the curved slider.
Also, they say the devices comes in silver or black. Do you know if htat would be just a cover that could easily be exchanged?
Finally, I'd like to second master athlon's request for xpanel shots...
Thanks,
N.
No problem, here you go. Pics of the keyboard out.
My phone is silver. Not sure how easy it would be to put a cover on it. The great thing is, it's VERY well built. All metal, the keyboard slides out very smoothly. It's a really great phone.
You can type on it while it's open on the desk.
If the pics are too small, let me know and I'll re-export them.
I'll get you guys some pics of the xpanel but they wont be different than the ones that are already on the web and to be honest the version on the released phone will have many more panel options. For example, I don't have the one for video playing.
tjex,
great screen shots.
Does the X1 playback VGA video? Can you post details of anything that you have tried and how well it is played back?
Also, can it record video 640*480 mpeg4 (NOT 3GP)
And how does the keyboard feel? Is it comfortable?
Thanx
well nevermind about the Panel shots then. Can you do some shots of the sides, for things like the USB port, etc. Thanks
More shots of other 3rd party applications?
And ya, how are the keys?
hi tjex , have you tried if tomtom7 run ? Thnx !
Here's some more screenshots:
..and som more..
Panel overview:
Thanks for the Panel and music shots. Music player looks very nice and easy to use.
So for most apps, was the screen stretched (to fit the bigger resolution), or did it just fill it up something else?
Thank you nelshh,
OH my God. Are these actual Xperia screens????
How smooth and fast is Opera 9.5 in Xperia compared to others WM?
Apparently something to try for those with the test sets now
when did you kids get the Sony X1 ??
i want it too! and i dont wanna freaking wait either!
how about a screenshot of Remote Desktop running in 800x480 resolutions?
"when did you kids get the Sony X1 ??"
prerelease models send out for review and tesing...
Can tjex and nelshh give some opinions here?
Hey nelshh, what build of opera is that? And is that flash player 7, or is flash lite 3 possibly comming with the x1?
