Do I need a T Mobile Sim? - G1 General

I have searched and read the wiki but I couldn't find an answer which I'm sure has been asked before:
If I get an unlocked G1, do I need a T Mobile (UK) sim? I appreciate sim unlocking it means it should accept any sim but are there any features that only require the T Mobile network connection. I presume it won't update any more if I leave it on Vodafone for example?

No, you don't.
Any SIM with data plan will work just fine, only you'll need to add APN manually and you will not be able to use OTA updates.
I've bought about week ago G1 in sealed T-Mobile box, but it was unlocked and i put my O2 SIM and during activation entered data for O2 APN and got i work without any problems.

Actually you will still get the OTA updates even if you arent on tmobile. Google sends out the updates so all you need is some form of data connection, wifi or via your provider.

Hello,
Today I bought a HTC Hero and I am really happy with this device. However I can't make connection with internet. I have send a message to my provider for internet configuration and it is saying that my device doesn't support my provider. I have Vodafone. The mobile is sim lock free!
I hope you guys can help. Otherwise i have to sell it
Greats,

Google for APN settings, enter manually. DO NOT PANIC
Country? If not america, then it will work, Voda are just trying to get you to buy a new contract.

Either that or you need an updated Sim card. My Mother has an old o2 Sim which doesn't support MMS or mobile internet, had to get a replacement sim to be able to do it.
Should be ok though, the settings are generic and will work with any phone
Thank you guys! You saved my phone...haha!
Ok.. Now i have to do a lot of reading!
Next thing is rooting !

Do you mean it will not work in America? I asked here a question http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4618065&postcount=6
Phone is unlocked but i cant even set it up to work. Do i really have to purchase expensive internet plan to make it work?
Thanks in advance.
baisically an unlocked htc hero cant support american 3g banding because it doesnt support the specific frequencies or something
you should still be able to get 2g internet in the US
in the rest of the world you should be able to get 3g if your carrier supports it

I'm not saying it does not support 3G! I have t-mobile unlocked phone, it has correct frequences for t-mobile usa, the thing is that i just can't connect to ANY internet and device won't start unless i sign in =(((

The OP is on Vodafone, which, last time I checked, was not operating on the American market.
So, yeah, it will not work

Not sure what you mean here? If you are not saying it does not support 3G, presumably you are saying that it does support 3G. This is not true for any US network at present - the best you will get is EDGE.

I'm pretty certain that you get the option to skip the sign in process when you first switch on, and the FAQ says that this is the case ( ).
You should be able to skip the sign in, and then you should be able to manually setup the APN for T-Mobile access, or connect to a wireless access point via WiFi. Once this is done, you can re-run the registration process to sign into a google account.

Tmo tab on uk network?

So i am currently in the uk (northern ireland to be exact) when i try to select a network (O2, Vodafone, tmobile) it wont register, it sees the network but it wont connect to it. Besically i am using the tab with my tmobile sim not a local sim, and the tab is still network locked to tmobile. Any ideas on how i can get it to register to a local network? I am not looking to unlock the tab (not right now at least) and run it with a local sim just trying to connect to a network just in case i need to make a call.

Do you have "WorldClass International Roaming" enabled on your plan?
Regards,
Dave
Well i am not sure,i actually checked my account and all i see is somethibg called world class international service, my wife has this option on her line but her phones does not connect either so i not sure thats not the only thing that needs to be activated. There is no way for me to select that service on my line. I also have an old phone wich was unlocked and using a prepaid sim card and it does not connect either. Could it be the sim that is not allowing to connect?

You can add that above mentioned roaming service for the time you are away. I think you can do it through the att.com website. But get ready for a shock - it's a buttload of cash for data and cell.
You're at a pc, right? If it's windows 7 and you have your cable, why not unlock it and buy a local sim? That's my solution when I'm out of the US.
As metioned on my previous post my wife has that service on her line and she still cant get it to register on the local network. Might be the sim we have, tmo, its not letting us connect. Ill have to call them when i get back to the us and find out why. I am waiting to contact tmo to get my unlock code for the tab, i am not confortable using adb.

You can follow the cut-paste steps from Roto to unlock tab without adb. Just get a terminal emulator from the market, and open it, then do the copy-paste in the emulator. It's cool!
Did you check your network settings to enable roaming?
I have also noticed that the GPS was not working either, I was driving and had GPS test running for over 5minutes and it never locked the most I got was 4 satellites but didn't lock on any of them. Mind you I was driving out in the country and clear skies no idea why GPS would not lock in northern Ireland.

When I can't get a lock, like right after flashing a new rom/kernal, I go into recovery (power +volume up), and clear the cache partition (don't factory reset!), then I use a market app called Here I Am 2 to get the first position lock in a new region or country.

Ok it seem to have worked by doing what u suggested but how can i make sure it is unlocked since i dont have a non tmo sim?
I did have roaming enabled and still nothing, i will call tmo to ask and see what they say.

The only way to know if you are unlocked is by using another carrier's sim. Just borrow one from a friendly local, or buy a prepaid sim to use for local calls.

Guess ill have to stop by an att store but with att buying tmob it will not matter soon.

So i seemed to have unlocked the tab using rotos method, i went out and got a att sim to try and see if it actually worked but i can not get the tab to run on the att sim. I did use the sim to unlock my tmo vibrant and it worked with no issues, so what am i doing wrong? Do i need a new modem for the sim to work? I also tried using the apn settings from the vibrant running the att sim and nothing, tried apn settings from google and nothing, what gives? Any advise? Thanks.

[Q] Rooted OK but how....

...do I unlock the phone now that Android is installed?
Should I have done a SuperCID on it when Windows was still installed, or is there a way to do it now, too?
if you mean sim/network unlock, its completely unconnected to roms/flashing/hspl or any of that.
there is no free unlock, you can only get it unlocked to other networks by getting a code off your provider, or paying for one from teh many companies that offer the service.
So, what happens when you stick, say, a Vodaphone SIM in a T-Mobile HD2?

The phone asks for a code if it's sim locked. If it's unlocked, then it will detect the sim card and connect to Vodaphone's service. The only thing that doesn't always work is 3g data, if the new network doesn't use the same frequency bands as the carrier the phone was made for. Like if you put an AT&T sim in an unlocked TMOUS HD2, you can make calls and use 2g data, but 3g won't work.

G1 unlocked but no service

Hi I recently unlocked my G1 with a code, I had service. after I had to activate the phone but my sim card wasn't provisionned for data.so I turned off.Now when I put sim card the phone don't see any network,it don't ask me unlock code.I have no ideas please help me.
do you have tmobile sim? you shouldn't need a code.. but if you dont have a data plan it shouldn't matter anyway bcuz you cant do anything with the sim... basically can only use wifi and if your device is rooted you dont need a sim, sorry if i mis understood the question
Once you unlock your G1 from T-Mobile, it stay unlock. You can use any SIM from any network, but you might have to setup the APN for your vendor. (IE: AT&T, Sprint, etc...)
As stated by ldrifta if you don't have data service from your vendor, you can only get internet (online) using wifi.
So, in order for you to get provision you will have to get with your vendor to pay for the service.
I have good apn settings for my vendor mcc, mnc, apn and so but I still don't have service. I'm anxious for that, or I need to activate first using wifi before having service?
Since you have already unlock your G1, my suggestion is to get the data service. So you can start using it.
I tried a friend sim card provided with data service but it sill don't see any network,no service.Do you have any idea about it.Thanks
Go to Setting >> Wireless & Network >> Mobile Networks >> Network Operators
And select your vendor network you supposed to be on. That should registered your phone on your vendor network.
ok I will try

[Q] Using Verizon Galaxy Note 3 International

Can someone Please help me figure out why I cannot get service on my Verizon Galaxy Note 3 when I'm traveling or specifically in India. I thought Verizon Note 3 is world unlocked out of the box!!! Am I wrong?
BACKGROUND:
I have successfully flashed my Verizon Note 3 to Boost Mobile so that means I used a Samsung Galaxy Prevail as my donor phone which means I changed the MEID # of my Note3. I have also successfully rooted the phone and have also installed Beanstown106 leaked version of KK 4.4.2 on the Phone with the latest Safestrap and it works fine as far as I can tell. I used the instructions from the following thread to flash my phone to Boost; just FYI:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2060085
QUESTION:
I try to insert the GSM SIM card for Vodafone carrier and it's unable to connect to network even though I added the correct APN settings. So does this have anything to do with me changing the MEID# on my Note 3, is this why it's not connecting to a network?
I kept getting the error message that "This SIM card is from an unknown source" So I disable the setup wizard 1.0 using nobloat app and it got rid of that message. I'm still unable to connect to a network?
Can someone please tell me what I need to do to fix it or can tell me what the problem is?
Or if there's anyone that has used the Verizon Note 3 overseas successfully that can tell me what I'm doing wrong?
purchase a local SIM from Airtel with a 1GB 3G package and 200 minutes of talktime for about 700 rupees ($10 or so)!!
When adding the new SIM you will see message "Non-Verizon SIM detected" but apart from that voice should work just great. Go into the APN settings the + now active and add in the new APN settings for Airtel. After you do this the internet will start working and you will be able to get H/H+ speeds there.
So yes, Verizon 4G LTE phones are truly unlocked for oversees use and you can just pop in a foreign SIM and go no worries...

Yes it may very well have to do with a IMEI change. I didnt think it was possible to change the imei.

So why would the Airtel SIM work and Vodafone will not? I don't get it they are both GSM carriers so why would one work and other one wont? Even though I fixed the APN settings for the Vodafone SIM.

My mistake, I meant I changed the MEID# not the IMEI.
But apparently you can change the IMEI# of the device as well, allegedly according to the following thread. I never done it myself.

That could easily cause you issues if your carrier can't understand the identification information your phone is providing the tower.
To be safe keep a log of what you have changed that way if it is worse you can know how to go back or what you have played with otherwise as with myself once time passes I completely forget all the details.
