I ran into some problems the other day installing a theme and after a reboot it was hanging on the Splash Screen T-Mobile G1 Screen. I thought I bricked my phone but I had the ENG SPL and someone suggested to reflash and start over with RC29 and reroot the phone. I did and it booted right up into the home screen like I just bought the phone. Now I was trying to flash the modified recovery partion but I noticed some stuff going wrong. Telnet was not downloading from the market, much less any of the apps. Telnet was neither installing from the browser nor downloading from the market. So i tried forwarding a port from my computer and connecting my G1 to Telnet via ADB from my computer which worked. I then flashed the modified recovery partition and after rebooting twice and going into the recovery utility it reads.

From this I cannot tell whether the modified recovery was flashed or not.
Now every time I try one of these options in the recovery utility, it always spit out another

The only thing that works is Alt+L which toggles the text but still gives me an error despite being the only option that works.
Am i screwed here or is there some way I can get my phone back on track and get it rooted and updated from RC29
NOTE: My phone still works but just in a watered down state where my phone doesn't download any apps at all

Just preform a whipe. I had the same issues last night.
I tried that I forgot to say too.
I can't do it in the recovery utility since it just pits out the same error everytime and when trying it from the phone itself from SD Card & Phone Storage it says something like "No reset performed because the System Clear service is not available.
Any other way from those two options to wipe my phone???

I did the same (reflashed RC29) and got the same error. Thought, "Oh crap, now I've really done it." Turns out, I flashed JF 1.42 RC33 and the error went away. Of course, I was still able to download everything so it's not exactly the same issue. But the error message itself was the same. Have a backup from the outstanding Nandroid utility?
Well I do have some nandroid backups but flashing RC29 also restored the original bootloader so that means I'm not really able to flash those backups. I can't update to anything using the recovery utility so I don't know what my next move is.
Have you tried flashing rc29 again?

I hope you either have appinstaller or Astro installed.
I would recommend using MyBackup, download it onto your sdcard from ur computer from http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?qmyztn0mndz. Use appinstaller/astro to install it from your SD, backup all your goodies. (for astro, the mybackup apk needs to be in backups/apps folder)
*Go back to RC29 (follow the steps here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480)
Get hard SPL as suggested in that thread.
Install RC33/ADP1.1h (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=475381)
Don't forget to upgrade your radio too (links in above thread)
Perform a wipe.
Boot to the home screen and check if everything works to your expectations. (Now is when you install Astro/appinstaller from the market)
Now install the engineering SPL.
Try instaling your nandroid backup.
NOTE: Next time you try a theme and find you are stuck at the splash screen, just reinstall the latest/greatest JF/personal image u were using.
Keep in mind themes for RC33 etc use more space so get rid of the ringtones & notifications from the system folder before installing most themes.

Yes I have tried reflashing RC29 two times to no avail.
And MrBurrito I wish I was able to update my phone with any update.zip. packages but the recovery utility is not able to update with any of the packages. It just spits back out the error

I wish it was that easy to get it working
Any other suggestion for updating my phone without the recovery utility and fastboot?
Is there a partition called CACHE that may be causing the problem?
hey, not sure if this is any help or not but im wondering if you moved your cache to the sdcard so save room on the system memory? if so is your sdcard actually seated properly. I occasionally can't run my apps that i moved onto my sdcard cause the phone is not reading the sdcard. I take out the sdcard and reseat it and that usually does the trick. sometimes i have to reseat it 2 or 3 times before it will read. it's annoying when it happens. Other than that i'm sorry im a minnow in the ocean when it comes to linux stuff.

Well I moved some of my cache's to my sdcard back when I had rooted RC30. Like browser, market, and a few more but I never tried moving my apps to the sdcard.
i moved everything but my cache to my sdcard. im wondering if something in the cache was moved that the phone needs but can't read cause of the sdcard not being seen. just a shot in the dark, but i've been in a place where i couldn't use my old wizard phone cause of a corrupt rom and can understand your frustration. you might try sending a private message to some of the more astute members like jesusfreke. I know he answers private messages as soon as he can and is very patient with newbs like me
I will try doing that but I'm still open to the community's answers.

I am also pretty sure the error given has to do something with the CACHE partition found in /dev/block/mtdblock4.
Every time i try to edit or modify a directory called /cache it tells me its a Read only file system
Well depending on all the signs I think there is something wrong with the cache of my phone. Market apps not downloading, Browser downloads not successfully downloading and the errors about Can't mount CACHE:recovery/log in the recovery utility. It also says says Read only file system whenever trying to do anything with a folder called /cache.
So if somebody has any suggestions on CACHE, I would appreciate it.
My last resort is a cache.img from anybody since mine seems to be corrupt or something since everytime i try to flash it from my NAND backup it keeps tell me there was an error reading the file.
If anybody has a NAND backup of cache.img file or if anybody backed up there /dev/mtd/mtd4 file from either RC29 or RC30. Preferably RC29. Please post. Thank You

id look into flashing the nbh bassiclly treating the phone like a stock RC30, it sounds like your recovery stuff ain't playing well with others and that may reinstall all of the pooched apps and stuff.
I dunno but it don't sound good, but the rooted .nbh that freed the peeps trapped without root, uses the bootloader to re flash everything, im not an android expert but there is a holiday inn express just down the street...

I tried flashing both of the RC29 and RC30 DREAIMG.nbh to no avail either. I have to say it has to do with something the cache partition (mtdblock4). The only thing that does not get flashed when using the DREAIMG.nbh is the cache. That partition is a read only file system on my phone and I dont know how to change it to a read write so that the recovery and everything else can access it. Anybody knows how to???
i dont know what sort of console you have if any but the mount command if you can execute it will list the mounted filesystems and their current states (ro = read only rw = read/write) thats assuming you can type said command though, if you can through the output on here and i may be able to get cache writable

Okay guys i got it fixed. Thanks for all your help, especially DJ_Steve. The thing was having to mount the mtdblock4 partition (cache partition) and restarting in recovery and doing a wipe (which finally worked).

Firstly please forgive me it this seems pretty basic however i seem to have lost the ability to mount the cache partition on my JF1.5 Dev Phone.
The upgrade process went fine, had been using it for a week, then i installed an animated splash screen made for non-cupcake builds and it bricked my phone. i got the black screen of wait in place of an animated load screen. luckily, anticipating such problems, i had just done a full nandroid backup.
now here's the problem. while backing up from nandroid, i was informed that the cache partition does not exist.
looking in the filesystem, there is a /cache folder but nothing in it and i have lost the ability to install apps via the market.
running mount shows:

mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock4 /cache

but I fail to see why you are doing this, care to explain so i can understand?
ok maybe i should explain better. there are 3 major blocks set aside for the use of the filesystem. mtdblock3 is set aside for the /system partition, mtdblock4 is set aside for /cache and mtdblock5 is set aside for /data. cache is important because it caches objects for the dalvic VM, web pages for the browser and most importantly, it stores apks from the market while downloading. now the first two are not so bad because the dalvic vm will run, just a little slower and the browser will browse, ablight will not be able to cache pages and will only have access to what is in ram. but because the market will wait to be able to place a file in /cache before downloading it, this effectively means i will never be able to download/install from the market.
Now what happened was when i created my nandroid backup it backed up system.img, cache.img and data.img
i then bricked the system and wanted to restore from nandroid backups. first i put back the system, then data but the phone wouldnt accept a cache image. fastboot is unable to mount it, jf recovery is unable to mount it, and the android OS is unable to mount it.
also i tried your suggestion but mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock4 /cache returns the same error message:
mount: mounting /dev/block/mtdblock4 on /cache failed: Invalid argument
also, mount -a returns:
mount: mounting /dev/block/mtdblock4 on /cache failed: Invalid argument
mount: mounting /system/modules/modules.cramfs on /system/modules failed: No such file or directory

It would be a roundabout way, but DREAIMG.NBH will restore partitions. Of course you'd have to then do the rooting process all over again.
Wait... but to do nandroid, don't you want to just restore

data.img
boot.img
so the commands would be
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash userdata data.img
fastboot flash boot boot.img
I guess I'm failing to see why cache needs to be restored. won't the OS just clear it out an write over it eventually anyways?
Or am I missing something?

As per title, I had an android noob moment...
I was going to try and copt over the feeds widget with vibrant version (cause it's black from a video i saw), and i figured i could prob copy over apk + odex into system/app and theyd work... but my phone froze and now it wont go past the boot screen...
Is there some way i can delete the system files i copied over from PC (adb?) or update.zip?

I had a similar issue trying to get a wildfire app working on my galaxy. I just used adb to push clockworkrecovery and then once booted into clockwork used adb shell and su to remove the files that I shouldn't have installed and it boots fine

I'd think you need to get the recovery .zip from Koush's site, rename it update.zip, do adb push update.zip /sdcard . Apply the update.zip in the standard recovery to get to ClockworkMod.

After looking at the file system of the X10 and noticing lots of empty space on the /system partition and the fact I wanted more space for apps but didn't want to use my class 2 SD card (that is already pretty full!), I decided to try moving some of my larger apps and pointing to the new location using symlinks (like what apps2sd does). Got over 70mb extra space and no probs no far. New apps will just be installed in /data/app/ as before.
Goes without saying that you do this at your own risk and to make a backup first!
This hack of course requires root! And busybox installed.
First copy the apk file to /system/app2/ say (/system/app/ is already used for some system apps so I decided not to copy their so I could keep them separate.)
Check this is done correctly (I used root explorer) but if the command completed with no errors it should be ok. May need to mount /system as read/write.
Then delete the original file and create a symlink to the new file. (If the first step was done incorrectly this step will remove the app!)
I used an app called Scripter to read QR codes I generated from http://qrcode.kaywa.com/ (use text mode) with the code I wrote on my PC, just scan your comp screen with phone camera and it gives you the option to execute the text. (Or you could spend hours typing it in by hand.) adb didn't work for step 2 when I tried it (access denied).
If step 1 says access denied use root explorer to mount /system as read write and try again or use adb to copy the apps ("adb shell" then use the "busybox cp /data/app/com.rovio.angrybirds.apk /system/app2/com.rovio.angrybirds.apk" command)
Example with angrybirds:
First find the name of the .apk file (I used root explorer and navagated to /data/app/ and ordered by size) in this case "com.rovio.angrybirds.apk"
Copy it:
busybox cp /data/app/com.rovio.angrybirds.apk /system/app2/com.rovio.angrybirds.apk
Delete old file and create symlink:
busybox rm /data/app/com.rovio.angrybirds.apk
busybox ln -s /system/app2/com.rovio.angrybirds.apk /data/app/com.rovio.angrybirds.apk
I used notepad "find and replace" to change "com.rovio.angrybirds.apk" to the name of a different app and repeated.
Here are the names of the apps I moved (to save you typing out the names, all near the top of the list in terms of size).
com.polarbit.krazyracers.apk
com.rovio.angrybirds.apk
com.skype.raider.apk
com.fring.apk
com.qype.radar.apk
com.galcon.igalcon.apk
Hope this helps people who like me want more space for apps without using their SD card. Any probs ask here and hopefully I or someone else can help.

not calling into question what you say but I think in the long run is able to consume more resources (or at least the same) due to the fact that they also use a folder within the system...

Or, even better - an apk, which lists all apps installed, and does moving selected ones. Should not be difficult to implement.

If by more resources you mean phone memory? Then yes it consumes the same amount of memory but as /system is on a different partition it consumes the memory in a different place (kind of like a different hard drive in your comp, google partitioning).
I'd love to make this into an app but have no idea where to start, prob wouldn't be too hard though, just a gui that passes busybox commands to the shell, with maybe some safe guards, say leave 50meg free, check its copied correctly ect, wonder if other phones have free space in /system as well? No idea with the script either or how to build a safeguard if command 1 fails don't do 2 and 3, but if someone can run a script they can prob do this.
Yeah should work on other phones if /system is mounted on a different partition and has free space. Run "df" (without quotes) in terminal or using adb run "adb shell" after you've connected to your phone and then "df" and post your output here and I'll let you know. My phone starts to complain (memory low message in status bar) and drop sms messages (really bad bug/feature!) when I get below 50meg, hence the reason for me doing this.
I tried to do the same thing but use /nand (internal storage) and link is created in /data/app but doesnt appear in drawer

Tried and couldnt have my SD recognize by my tablet after making the second partition.
I really like to make link2sd work but as soon I create the secont FAT32 or ext2 or ext3 card disapear

tablet? what kind of tablet? if you partitioned the card wrong, it could cause unexpected things. I prefer to do it with SuperOS(formerly Super Ubuntu) distro or any kind of Ubuntu.
if that tablet is 2.1 then this should work, but if it's 2.2+ then app2sd is exactly you need.

Tablet: HSG-X5A-G 2.1
I format with a PC with Ubuntu and not recognize I even try with minitool on another PC
I did on ubuntu with 8gb SD Card X6 and gparted:
delete all partition on SD card apply
create a partition (1) of 8gb primary FAT32 apply
resize to 7.5gb this partition apply
create 0.5gb partition (2) with the free space after resize primary FAT32 apply.
set partition (1) active
put the card in tablet
and no detection of the card.
If I delete the 500 meg (2) partition the sdcard is imediately recognize after putting back in the tablet.
I even try second partition with ext2 or ext3 try too formating with clockwork recovery menu.I try too to copy to the new formated SD the dir Android, Android-secure and Lost.Dir...... Nothing work.
The second partition make my SD unrecognizable.
I even try to create a linux swap file of 32 meg and no chance too.
If someone can explain me why?
did you use cwm to format things? for now avoid things like this
if you have root(have you?), then please download irssi connectbot from market, open it, set the pulldown list to 'local' at the bottom and give it a name, enter.
then open the newly created connection, issue these commands and post the results here(with the sd card working):

I create the second partition on the card (space was free) as primary and FAT32 put back the card in the tablet.

I rooted my Galaxy S3 Mini (GT-i8190) (following seedrom193's tutorial), but I'm still on the stock Android ROM.
I was trying to use Link2SD with a correctly partitioned SD card (10GB primary FAT32 + 4GB primary ext2), but got the following error, which showed every time I tried to recreate mount scripts:
"Mount script cannot be created. mount: No such file or directory"
Also, on every reboot, I would get a "Mount warning" from Link2SD, requiring me to "quick reboot" my phone. After that (second) reboot, Link2SD would work correctly, but shortcuts on my home screen to linked apps were missing.
After much googling I figured that maybe the problem was caused by my (stock) ROM not having init.d support. So I used this method to add init.d:

Init.d worked properly, but I still got the same error in Link2SD. Then, I used Root Explorer to look at my file system (any other root browser would work too I guess) and found the cause. Apparently, the device node /dev/block/vold/179:98 does not exist, because Android's vold mounting system doesn't automatically mount the second partition of the SD card. This causes the "mount: No such file or directory" error on the first mount command. However, the second mount command (from /dev/block/mmcblk1p2) should work. For some reason, this error seems to keep Link2SD from installing the boot script.
So, I decided to create an init.d script of my own. Using Root Explorer, I created and edited a file named "11link2sd" in /system/etc/init.d/ and inserted the following text:

This solved the problem for me, and I can now use Link2SD without needing the extra quick reboot. I figured I'd share my solution in case anybody else had the same problem. Maybe you could help. I think I properly installed Link2SD and that it is working correctly (I don't know of any way to check that).
When I go into the menu and ask for storage, I get the following: it is in french, but "libres" means "free".

This is the second partition which you created and which is indeed almost full. Unless you intentionally put other files there (which I assume you didn't, or you'd have known about it ), this partition was filled by Link2SD, with over 2 Gb of data. So Link2SD is working as it should, freeing your internal memory by moving stuff to that second partition.
Now, as for your second question:

Yes, but I recommend taking a backup of your SD card first, just to be safe. If your power fails or your card reader is disconnected during re-partitioning, you might lose data.
Assuming you're using Windows, you will need to make sure that MiniTool Partition Wizard is installed first (link can be found here). Also, you will need to have a way to back up the second SD card partition (which I assume contains an ext file system) over to Windows. You can copy over the files using Ext2Fsd, DiskInternals Linux Reader or Ext2explore, or find some program for creating an image of an ext partition in windows.
Then, take these steps:
1. Turn off your phone (and do not turn it on again!)
2. Take your SD card out of your phone and connect it to your computer using a card reader
3. To make a backup, copy everything on both partitions of your SD card to your computer
4. Use Partition Wizard to shrink the first partition on your SD card, and use the resulting unallocated space to expand the second partition (don't forget to press the "Apply" button!)
5. Safe-remove your SD card and put it back in your phone
6. Turn your phone on again
This should enlarge your extra partition without causing any problems with Link2SD. If you really want to be safe, you could use Link2SD to unlink all of your apps before step 1, and re-link them after step 6. Based on the information you provided, you should have just enough internal memory to do so.

I think it will re-mount automatically, but don't have any similar experience with my own phone. With my own device, the micro-SD expansion slot is underneath the battery, so I have no choice but to turn off the phone before removing the SD. By consequence, the OS offers no option to unmount the SD card (that I know of at least).
However, once you turn your phone on again, your SD card should be mounted automatically. Have you rebooted (or turned your phone off and then on again) since using Link2SD? If yes, then it's probably fine. I would recommend that you don't unmount your SD card while the phone is running and apps are still linked; your linked apps would probably stop working.

I closed the phone and took off the SD card without any problem.
I made an image of the content with ext2explore.
I then use MiniTool Partiton to try to extend the ext4 partition. The problem is there: MiniTool Partition cannot handle the job!
On the SD card, I have one FAT32 Partition and one ext4 linux patition. MiniTool can resize the FAT32 partition, leaving an unallocated space between the FAT32 and the ext4 partition, but it cannot resize the ext4 partition to take advantage of the unallocated space! I can move the ext4 partition closer to the FAT32, leaving the unallocated space at the end; that is all I can do with MiniTool.
Of course I could delete the ext4 partition and create a new one, using all the unallocated space. But then , will I be able to load the ext4 image I created before in that new partition, since it is not the same size? When ext2explore create an image, does it make a clone of the partition (content, size, etc...) there is no explanation or help on that product!
I will try with Gparted to see what it does and try to simply copy the content of the ext4 partition instead of creating an image.

I first shrunk the FAT32 partition, then moved and resized the ext2 to use all the unallocated space. Have you tried first pressing apply after you shrink the fat32 and move the ext4? In any case, GParted should also work.
I can't help you with ext2explore as I have no direct experience with that program. You might be able to get some help in other parts of this forum.
If you want to try deleting that ext4 partition and creating a new one, you may be able to do this by first unlinking your apps back to your internal memory in Link2SD (as I suggested in an earlier post), re-partitioning and then re-linking with Link2SD.

It is realy odd! I created that ext partition with the same tool! Now I can move it, but not resize it....I will try with Gparted with my old computer running Linux (Ubuntu)...later on, expecting it will work fine.

That looks exactly like the problem I had. I suggest you first try Jacques' idea (changing ext2 into ext4 or vice versa) and if that doesn't work, use the method I put in the very first post. Let us know if you have any problems with that...

The last line (starting with chmod) is something I haven't seen before. If you create your own init.d script, you may need to add the same line.

Hey guys,
Some time ago my phone started having the exact same problem that Stabbey describes: mounting the second partition no longer works, manually mounting the second partition results in the "Invalid argument" error when running this command in a terminal emulator:

This started happening after I installed an update for busybox and some other apps and then rebooted. Something might have changed in the mount applet of busybox with that update, and that might have broken the mount command. Right now I don't know for sure if this is the case; I haven't figured out how to roll back the busybox update yet. In any case, if I can't manually mount, it certainly won't work on startup with init.d, so I'm stuck for now.
I'm sorry I can't give any of you a solution right now. If anyone else wants to take a crack at it, my problems started after installing busybox 1.25.1, so a version *before* that might work.

When I created a file in the init.d folder, I ended with a .txt file while the others in that folder have no extension. I wrote the code you mentioned. Then with Universal init.d app, I executed the file, and it worked -> the partition get mounted. But, when I reboot my phone, it is not done automatically: I have the error message on Link2sd, then I have to come back to Universal init.d, execute the script, and come back to Link2sd to see it is mounted. Do you have an idea to have it done automatically?

I used MiXplorer that I found on thi forum as a file explorer and to create the script file.
I am on Android 6.0, stock ROM but not original (eg when I bought the phone the stock ROM was on Android 5, then I discovered they changed to Android 6 so I downloaded the new stock ROM from the official website and flashed it).

A few days ago I was having some problems with my phone and lineage 14.1 so I decided to reflash the ROM, only to notice it wouldn't boot. I then decided to install the stock 6.0.1 firmware through odin, but when I rebooted the device, it just stayed on the samsung galaxy a3 screen. I managed to boot the device with a 4 part 5.0.2 polish firmware, which is bloated and doesn't remember wifi passwords, so I decided to try to reinstall the 6.0.1 firmware, thinking I had fixed my phone. I just ran into the same problem as the first time.
This time I noticed that when I booted into recovery, there was an error mounting /efs ("E:failed to mount /efs (invalid argument)"). Going through the internet I found many ways to fix the problem but none worked for me. The one I saw most people had success with was one that involved using some commands in adb, which failed for me.
The commands where:
adb shell
su
mke2fs /dev/block/mmcblk0p1
mount -w -t ext4 /dev/block/mmcblk0p1
reboot
all the commands up to "mount -w -t ext4 /dev/block/mmcblk0p1" worked fine, but this one got the error: can't find /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 in /etc/fstab
Does anyone have any idea how I can fully fix the device and mount /efs to be able to install a fully working firmware?

and at the end it says that if you're not sure which particular mmcblk0p* EFS mount point to use, you should use the command mount to see which one is he EFS mount point, but I can't seem to find which one to use after using 'mount'.

You can't just use any old block device, it needs to be the specific one the EFS partition mounts to, which you would find with the command below.
ls -laR /dev/block
However I would think your problem is that you just need to install the stock firmware then format(Factory Reset) the /data partition.

Is there a specific reason why the repair firmware works but other stock firmware or rom flashed after that don't. Shouldn't the repair firmware fix the problem?
I think I already tried formating the data partition after flashing a stock firmware, but I'll give it another try in a few days as I have a lot of stuff to do right now.
If this method doesn't work, using the same commands I stated previously on the block I get from -laR /dev/block should work right?
Sorry, I don't know that much about partitions, blocks and all that deep and advanced android stuff, I had never run into a problem like this when flashing roms and kernels previously, I don't even know what caused tha problem on the first place...

I found the block for the efs partition (/dev/block/mmcblk0p13) with your command, but when running the previous commands on it, I still get the "mount: can't find /dev/block/mmcblk0p13"
I already factory data reset my phone a couple of times after the problem occured the first time, and it didn't do anything. Any other ideas why something like this would happen?
EDIT: When I rebooted my phone I noticed my wifi was working (before this, all my wifi passwords would get erased on reboot) and when I checked the /efs folder on root explorer I noticed it was full, not like before. Seeing this I decided to try and install the stock firmware again and it worked!
