I'm looking to possibly get this as my 1st android phone - but I would like to be sure that you can get 3g on ATT in the US.

You're missing the point. GSM quad band is for 2G service only. In order to get AT&T's 3G service, you will need both 850 and 1900 UTMS/WCDMA band support. Obviously the current spec is for use outside of North America. If and when Samsung descides to bring it into NA, it has to add either AT&T's 3G band support or T-Mo (1700/2100) 3G band support.

yes you can get the i9000m version and you get full 3G coverage on both 850 and 1900 bands
don't get the i9000 version as that is only 900 and 1900 bands

You don't need BOTH (850 and 1900) to get 3g. You can get 3g with just 1900mhz, but it's definitely preferable to have 850mhz and 1900mhz.
So get the i900m.

You can get AT&T 3g with JUST 1900mhz. I didn't say it was great, but nonetheless you can still get it.

no not really some places dont have 1900 only 850..
but you are correct in that more have 1900 than 850.. but all new att services they are putting in for 3g are 850

I didn't say anything about which has more.
I am simply trying to convey the message that a phone with 1900mhz 3g can in fact connect to AT&T 3g network. I am not saying or have ever said that you can get it everywhere where AT&T provides 3g service. Jeez.

I am visiting the USA in September for holiday and am doing a bit of travelling while i am out there. I was going to buy a prepaid sim to use with my SGS II which is sim unlocked. I am visiting Los Angeles, San Francisco and Vegas what network would you guys recommend for coverage and costs ?? it would have to be a GSM network.

T-Mobile and AT&T are the only ones compatible with your SIM. However the SGS2 is only going to get EDGE on T-Mobile if you're wanting data. It's compatible with the HSPA for AT&T however. From what I understand there really isn't a difference in price between the two for prepaid. Nothing to make a difference when you're taking an international trip anyway.

European 3G bands are different than US ones. In Europe the UMTS band is operating on 2100MHz. AT&T operates it's 3G service on 850 and 1900 MHz.

Yeah but the SGS2 has the 1900MHz band in it, so it would work on AT&T's 3G network, but only on T-Mobile's EDGE.

You need both bands for AT&T 3G. 850 provides downlink. 1900 provides uplink. In Europe, 2110 is downlink and 2150 is uplink. It is normally just included in one spec of 2100MHz. The 850MHz band in this device would only provide 2G speeds.
AT&T is your best bet.
Can anyone confirm if these bands will work of AT&T? I found an unlocked HD2 with these bands, and bands for AUS, and need to know if they will allow this HD2 to use the 3G data service of AT&T.

I don't think so because if I recall ATT needs 850/1900 for 3G.
It does look like it will work on tmobile 3G though.

That would be a good reason to return it then. It's advertised as working on all data networks and has a quad band HSDPA radio in it. If I can't get it to work on AT&T, I will return it for a refund.

"working on all data networks" is correct, but not 3G. Any unlocked phone works on all data networks, but not all UMTS/HSPA networks. The quad band aspect of it is because it apparently works in Aussie and Tmobile, but from what I see there not on ATT
I recently broke my phone screen and have a year and a half left til my upgrade. In my down time i've been looking at phones from china and was wondering if this one will work on my At&t 3g?

Yeah those are the right GSM bands for 3G on AT&T.
edit: You will actually get "4G" with that phone (H+)

But it would only give me 3g on 850mhz waves right? The first ones are the 2g frequencies.

In order to get 3G on AT&T, the phone has to have GSM bands of both 850 and 1900. If it only has one you get 2G.
This phone has both.

So then even though the specs say
2g network gsm 850/900/1800/1900
3g network umts 850/2100
it still will have full 3g coverage for att?

Yeah the UMTS needs to be 850 and 1900, so that is Euro 3G, but it would probably only get 2G here.

Is there any way to make the HTC HD2 work with T-Mobile's HSPA network on 1900MHz? T-Mobile is shutting down/ has already shut down their 1700/2100MHz HSPA network and has migrated it to 1900MHz, making any 3G phone that is not compatible with 1900MHz HSPA, useless. So if 1900MHz HSPA can be made to work on the HD2, that would be great.

there is no way to modify frequency of your antennas. Only way to access t-mobile 3g for you is to get a new device

Too bad. So if I want to use an HD2, then I will have to find a carrier that still runs HSPA on 1700/2100MHz.
