Picture quality changes in the people tab. Why? - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV Themes and Apps

Hey all.
I am using the HTC Diamond.
WHen i store a picture to any contact and view it on the Peoples Tab in the TF3 the quality is horrible.
I tried to edit the picture as 256X256 which is equal to the default pics ,.... but still st does not impeove..
but when i choose the default pic in the tab. the pic quality is awsome.
why ?

Better way is to add picture to your contacts directly from album - not in contacts - that works for me better

Yea thats what i do. stll the quality is not good enough....

hmmm...and are those pictures captured by Diamond?? What for a resolution??
and could you give a screenshot??

well just bought the phone so not able to give you the screen shot but
tried by pics captured from my diamond as well as digi cam.
the resolution is
256 X 256
depth is 32 bit
72 dpi..

Does anyone here knows how to have a super image quality in the peoples tab.

Not sure if resizing the pictures to such a small format is a good way
Ok when you´re in album - picture with 3,2mpx resolution add to contacts - then the quality in people tab is bad??

Yea its stll bad dear

So for now I don´t know what it causes ´cause for me worked adding pictures from album and not in contacts..
But some time ago I saw here a thread about this issue so I´ll take a look

I had a similar problem I got around it like this..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2824740#post2824740

Resize to 240x320

you don't have to resize. The issue is with the fact that win mobile on its own isn't designed to show high res images that the diamond outputs (since most touch phones don't have a super high res screen). All you have to do is go to favorite tab and using that interface to add a picture for that specific person. The TF3D software will bump the resolution for you so that the image appears right.
People > Menu > Change picture

I think it's a problem from outlook. When you add a picture in outlook from your computer, you see the visit card and the picture you add is low resolution. But adding picture by the HTC album keep the right resolution. But you can sometime have an error when synchronizing with outlook after that.

HEy guys.
thanks everyone for your coments and suggestions..
after trying nearly for 2 days all differenent propositions...
i have almost solved the problem..
the solution..
1.Change the image from JPG to PNG
2. Change the image resolution to 256X256.
3. Increase the DPI to as much as possible... pref 300 DPI
4. Click on the menu on the peoples tab and change the picture.
by this i am getting very good resolution and clarity to my pics.
Please add more coments or suggestions to this.
Thanks.

Contact Pictures

Which image size do you use for the pictures of a contact ?
I tried almost every combination but the picture of a contact/people in the Touch Flo 3d still remains of poor quality .

I was about to start a thread about this too. The biggest pain is that there is no sample picture you can use to make your own pictures the same size. Does anyone know the answer?

After some research I found it. The resolution is 256x256. I use a PNG, but jpg works as well. I found out by looking at one of the avatars you can use when you have no picture of your own. Now the contacts picture looks perfect

How do you do it?
Take a pic of the person, crop the wanted part and downsize it?
Yes,
that's what I will do.
I will replace all of my contact photo's in Outlook that way.

Perfect??
I'm using a 256x256 JPG or PNG as well at 300 dpi...and it is still poor...
?
Ok I tried it . The result is better but still far from perfect.
Does someone has another idea ?
I´ve heard, but not tested, that you could use S2V (Slide to view) to add contacts´ picture without downsizing to low resolution.
If anyone tries it and works, tell us here.
Could someone post how contact picutes look like on the HD so we can see whats you mean when you say its bad quality...
Thanks!
Thanks
Thanks HelderJr I tried 2SV and that worked perfectly.
There is a setting when taking pictures with your phones camera to take contact pictures.. also for some strange reason when you use the pictures and videos program to add a photo in your library as a contact image the quality looks like crap. What looks best to me on the touch pro is open the Album program and add an image to a contact from inside the program. The contact picture quality looks much better.
Now this could turn out different on the Touch HD, but it works like this on my Touch Pro.
The thing that I dont like with TouchFlo 3D Photo Contact ... There is no standard "matrix" view of the photo contacts, for example 5 x n number of photos.
With TouchFlo 3D, we need to scroll to the correct photo and take action.
It is nice to see that 3D animation, but it is better to have an option for the user interface like the old HTC HOME.
Correction
2SV does the job. But !!!!!!!!!
Touch Flo 3d became extremely slow especially when reaching the tab "PEOPLE" and even crash down . Has to perform a soft reset and then 2SV doen't seem to work anymore.
So back to first question .
recorrection
UTVOL has it right.
Using the album(program) to assign a picture to a contact does almost the job.
Picture quality in tab "People" is largely improved but still not perfect.

... i think you must save in 72 dpi to avoid resizing by the HD ... in 300 dpi, there is a resize to web definition.... i 'm currently trying becaus ei have same problem, ...i will post the answer later ...hope it works.

Add photos from Album
Hi, try to add photos to your contacts from Album application
the difference is tremendous ... see samples:
1. foto used in both tries
2. set in outlook and synced via activesync
3. viewed with touch hd fotoviewer and saved to contact
so are you saying we should use 446 x 446 res?

No!
256x256 pix. but you need to set it from the phone. Copy the picture to device, open it and set to contact. Outlook will blurr it.

Where are contact pictures saved?

I transfered all of my contacts and contact pictures over from my blackjack 2 to my X1. I installed TF3d, and the contact pictures are very low quality looking. But to get them to have a high quality look, u have to change the picture from within TF3D itself. So being that I don't have these pictures saved to my phone anymore, I would like to know where contact pictures are stored on the X1 (since the contact pictures still do exist somewhere) ?
inside the contact itself i think.
but thats not a problem of the contact pictures itself, its a problem of TF3D. it scales all thos pictures down (and looses tons of quality) unless they have a certain format / size.
it's not a problem with TF3d It's a problem with outlook, it only saves very low-res images within the contact database.
far too low a resolution to appear at a decent quality on our gorgeous Hi-res screens, after all these images are according to MS supposed to be a tiny thumbnail..
If you have Hi-res images on the blackjack then dump them to a folder, and load them from there. If not then I'm afraid you'll have to do what I did. Get new photos..
if thats true, how comes that the Contact pictures of my Mates touch HD are sooo much better!?

Did he upgrade them off another device?
If not then that's probably why, the ones I transferred across from my uni via the athena are really low quality. But the ones off the X1 are fine.
But I've had most of them for so long I've got so used to them that I couldn't get on with some changed ones.
nope! not upgraded!
just did a test with his phone. i ordered him to do a picture in the Contact size (240x320) and snd it to me.
i made a contact pic out of it and is definitely of better quality.
go try it yourself. (attachment)
maybe not TF3D related, but downscaling is the problem.
if it was a tf3d problem then his image would be poor!

edited my text allready ^^
try saving a pic as a contact using S2V then sync with a pc.
do a contact backup with ppcpimbackup to be on the safe side
disconnect activesync, delete the entire contacts database, (can use sktools for this or ppcpimbackup)
then sync again and see what happens to the hires contact pic.
I've found that the image comes back lowres, ergo it's outlook that reduces the image quality.
[EDIT]
Having tested this in orifice 2007 at work, it didn't reduce the quality. so maybe it's only older versions that did?
simple solution for the blurry pictures!
open the PIC in HTC album, open options and choose "save to contact".
this seems to bypass the Outlook compression function.
All I do with mine is save them to a folder I made on my Memory Card. Then when I open the contacts list choose a picture, find it, attach it and jobs a good one. Very good quality too...

Picture Size in Contacts

I've been searching for an answer to this question for a while with no luck so far.
Outlook 2003 has a placeholder for a photo on each contact's details page. This picture can be used in the People tab on the Touch HD.
What is the ideal specification for such a picture (resolution and actual size)?
It may be obvious to others but it isn't to me!
TIA
I don't know what the optimum size is, but if you add the contact photo from within the contacts app it will be small and at low resolution.
The best option for me is to resize the desired image to the same size as the screen and then add it to a contact from A_C's S2V program. This then allows a full screen photo for caller ID with another of A_Cs programs S2U2. This works fine on my Kaiser and I see no reason it wont work on my Blackstone when it finally arrives.
Hope this helps.
i just got my touch hd yesterday and i instantly had to figure out the same problem.
i recommend to sync all your contact with your pc and then add the pictures later at the "people tab" on your device.
anyways,
the contact pictures in the "people tab" are 268x268 pixels.
that works pretty good, just try it.
Most people seem to agree 256x256 is the best resolution to use, however if you import the picture from Outlook it'll be horrible quality no matter what the original resolution was.
You need to select the picture from TouchFlo on the contacts tab to get the best quality (which still isn't fantastic).
some clues here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3388796&postcount=100
Is it still 256x256 in PNG format for HTC Sense ?
Try 400x400 pixel size. I use a 400x400 JPG and work fine for me.

Touchflo Wallpaper Comes Out Blurry

Hi all,
I decided to set a custom wallpaper today on my HTC Touch HD and found one
that was 800x480 so it would fit perfectly on the screen. When I look at the
picture through the file explorer, it looks sharp and exactly what it looked like
on my PC, but when I set it as a wallpaper using the Settings tab
in Touchflo3D, it comes out very blurry. It's almost a low-res version of the
original image.
Is there any way to fix this problem.
Thank you
EDIT:
I opend another thread in the HD Touch sesction of the forum as I thought
I'd get more replies here. Could a moderator please remove my other thread

Not sure if this is related. I had a similar problem with my contacts images.
If I assigned contact photos in Outlook and then sync, the contact photos on my phone were low-res.
But if I assigned contact photos on your SD card directly to specific contacts they became hi-res thumbnails.
Were do you have your wallpaper saved?
I have my pictures saved in the Pictures Folders in the My Documents folder.
I don't understand why this would happen, just because it's stored in
internal memory.
Never-the-less I shall try what you said and see whether it works.
Just to make sure 800x480 is the correct resolution for wallpapers on the
HTC Touch HD isn't it?
Thanks for your help Fallen Spartan

Your problem is slightly different Spartan, If you synch with Outlook it will always down res your contact images. The trick is to add them via the people tab in manila. That keeps them high res.

Unfortunately Da11y, yours is a known issue right now where background images are converted to a lower resolution, allegedly to save on processing power! So a large image doesn't have to be rendered every time. I could see they woul;d put a cap on the image size, but not limiting it to less than the screens resolution! There is a thread about this somewhere. I'll try to dig it out.
Cheers ClownShoes
I find it kinda of silly that this restriction is in place. The Touch HD has got an
amazing screen and not being able to set wallpapers in the normal high-res
defies the point.
I hate having low-res wallpapers so at the time being have no option but to use
the default wallpaper

To be honest I sort of thought this and I had corrected my problem beforehand. Just wasn't sure if Da11y's problem was related and I knew someone like yourself would correct me anyhow
Im confused about this very same thing, it somehow converts the image to lower resolution (dpi). Isnt there some registry entry that can be manipulated to disable this "feature"?
The phone has more then enough power to render a wallpaper, why else call it HD if it isnt even able to render a simple wallpaper properly...
I know what you mean 0verseer. This problem is very annoying as all my
high-res wallpapers are coming out proper sh*t on my Touch HD when set
to wallpaper.
I tried what you said as well Fallen Spartan but it made no difference.
You would think HTC would provide an option to enable/disable high-res
wallpapers

LOL
As much as I love my Touch HD, there's so many little things that really
p*ss me off with it.
This is just one of the few. Hopefully someone comes up with a reg hack
or something that will disable wallpapers from turning low-res.
I found that link guys http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=447785&highlight=wallpaper+lo+res
It appears it's a touchflo issue and a limitation of the way the graphics engine works.

Contacts picture - low quality

Hi -
I have read that the new Diamond2 will have better contactpictures. Is there a way to increase the quality on the Touch HD ?

This trick however does not work with newer Manila 2 from Topaz, since you get a crop feature that degrades the photo quality.
However, if you use Facebook accounts to link the photos, they will look good. The down side is you can't choose the photo - it has to be the one the person is using on his / hers Facebook profile.
Hmmm.... It dosent get any better at all :-(

You can choose from the users entire home page picture folder. So any of the photos they have ever used for their profile.
Here is the review in danish with the new Diamond2 - look where there is a picture of the contacts, it is much better quality then i can get on HD.

Not sure if you mean the same thing, but contact pictures on my HD were terrible quality when I loaded JPEGs from my PC, synch'd, and then assigned them to the relevant contact. But then I tried the same with as PNG format and contacts pictures are perfect.

This is true. In addition to above have to say do not assign image from contact list, in that case picture quality is really poor.
I don't know what is the situation with png format.
I had the same issue. If you go to contacts and select change/add picture they show up terrible. If you go your photos and the select save as contact they come out good oops didnt notice someone already answered this
.
I had the same problem with the diamond touch. The option for that phone was to make the jpeg file in a different size.
if you have a picture that is 1200X800 or something you must increase it but i dont know the size for the HD
