G1 without T-Mobile's G1 Feature - G1 General

Did some searches and didn't find anything, so sorry if this is a duplicate post.
Can you use the G1 without the G1 feature from tmobile? They offer a $10 for 100mb plan, and I'm sure my buddy who is looking at getting a G1 wouldn't use more then 100mb.

No sure what using a G1 without G1 means...
2nd, you'd be suprise how fast you can go through 100MB.

i'm pretty sure you have to get the data plan because in order to set up the phone you have to get online, and for the record 100mb goes pretty fast, expecially on the G1 or any other phone that will load the entire page. T-mobile believes that without a data plan there is no way to set up your G1 with the servers and therefore they will suggest you get the data plan. i am not sure, but you might be able to get rid of the data plan after the first month but i might be mistaken

He'd burn through 100 megs in under a week. The G1 is constantly communicating with the "cloud".

Not a good idea. Your phone is always talking to Google's servers for email push, market etc. You will go through 100mb in no time even if you aren't using the phone much.

I can confirm that, I go thru more then 100mb in a week.
At any rate, I don't think this is a right place to ask, you should be in general G1 forum, this is for developers to share their ideas about Android, not to find a way to save $10/month.

Check out JesusFrekes thread on doing this.

Given the abundance of open 802.11 networks, a data plan can really be a waste. If you don't want the full data plan, delete all your APNs so that it can't connect at all. This way at least it isn't going to be racking up a pile of data charges.

The Dreaded Premium Data-Add on

I'm looking to get the Evo but the $10 a month Premium data-add on is something that is holding me back. What I am trying to figure out is whether this is actually required by the phone or not. I was told back in the days that the Blackberry Internet Service was "required" for activation, yet I easily activated the phones without the internet plan, and I was even able to activate a few with the internet plan then go back and remove the internet plan and it still worked! I to this day don't believe Sprint when they tell me something won't work, so I'm trying to find a solution to this. Is there anyway the command forcing the phone to search to see if the subscriber has the data add on can be accessed? Would it be a file or a command? And wouldn't I just be able to do what I did with my Blackberry's in the past and just cancel the premium data add on after activation and keep the phone working like normal?
Another user explained to me that a user on these forums: Toast is working on some sort of solution to this?
I'm pretty sure no. As with the pre and hero I think the sprint system knows the imei for the phones and will require this. Looking in my account, I can see the premium data plan, and It does not let me remove it. If there's some special way, who knows, but I don't think I've heard of one yet.
I'm actually ok with the premium data plan. It means that less people ran for the phone (which means I got one easy) and it means less people jamming the network with one, which leads to higher speeds for me lol... Sprint's always been good to me otherwise. I can eat the 7.70 a month I have to add on.
You must have the plan or your phone disactivates.
It's worth it, free Telenav and sprint tv, plus 4g

Speed alone is worth it. If that doesn't sell you I read somewhere a plan pricing comparison and Sprint with the +$10 plan is still cheaper than most services out there when it comes down to it.

The free sprint TV is crap, but the navigation seems very good!
But...Navigon will be releasing an android nav app this year, so that will make it useless, lol
Basically if you don't get 4G or don't need it...it's just an extra crap fee.

This is pure blind luck. When the Blackberry add-on was still sold by Sprint, not having it on the account was possible...but lead to a great deal of issues. Blackberry devices can and will check the web often. If you dind't get hit with data charges. Some people did. Some people's phones couldn't even make phonecalls without the pack.
And just for reference, the price of that add-on was set by RIM, NOT by Sprint.

Half true. There's no way to remove the feature as every Rep knows that it has to be there.
Of course if you do manage to find a way to remove the feature you'll end up paying MORE, so that's probably not in you r best interest!
Personally, I rarely use 4g. It has major penetration issues (know I'm going to hear more on that phrase!) but considering I'm at 1.3GB since the 27th of last month on this thing, odds are good I'll reach and/or exceed the 5gb cap that typiccally accompanies this kind of gear. $10 to allow me to use the phone as much as I want, in whatever way I want?
Sold.
I don't see the big issue. I came from AT&T paying $250 a month. This is nothing to worry about.
you can get this phone on $70/month plan. google slickdeals, check their hotdeals foroums. it's there.

yeah, but you can get nav on the evo from google maps....
I think it's a ripoff to charge an extra $10 that most of the country can't access yet for some reason, people still pay it.
I originally was upset by the $10 surcharge, however, after using the Evo for a weekend I consume WAY more data on it than any other phone I've used. Its so hard not to. I almost prefer browsing on it compared to my laptop, YouTube is great, and Maps and Navigation on the big screen is a joy to use. Besides, Sprint's plans are still a hell of a lot better than the competition, even with the extra fee.
So is there a definitive answer whether the 3g is truly unlimited or is it only 4g? There seems to be conflicting answers everywhere.

From CNET News: "If the thought of having to pay for 4G without actually getting 4G makes you mad, it might be some slight consolation that there will be no data cap associated with the Premium Data add-on, regardless of whether you're using 4G or 3G, according to Phone Scoop."

How I Cut My Cellphone Bill In Half !!!

Hey guys, like you, even though we have to manually do alot to get our HD2's in perfect condition. I wanted to hip you all to something that I'm currently taking advantage of, which is saving me major money each month.
Went to Wal-Mart on the lauch date of the infamous HD2, and paid full price for one, thinking that it would end up saving me money in the long run, because I had my own equiptment, therefore, I wasn't under a 2 year aggreement for T-Mobile.
Went to the T-Mobile store to get setup with service. Deciding on getting the T-Mobile unlimited everything plan (voice, sms, data) it ended up costing me around $92 a month (including taxes, fee's, and the $5 discount). So, I began thinking, "this is not the significant discount I was looking for". I asked the salesman what was the benefit of me purchasing this phone outright, he told me that if I got the same package and features, with the phone discount, under contract, it would cost me around $120-$130 a month. I began to seek other options to lower my bill. However, I was hesitant to lower anything, because I did one time, and got fuked over with crazy overage charges! I even thought about switching it over to AT&T, but then realized I'd be loosing out on the high speed data, because of the incompatibilities of the 3G radios between the 2 networks (and who wants edge speed on a smartphone these days!).
Then I did some research and found out about Simple Mobile, this is a Virtual carrier of T-Mobile (like how Virgin is to Verizon, and Boost is to Sprint). Anyway, after a couple of emails, and phone calls, I decided to make the switch. I found a nearby retailer (or u can check them out online) And I never looked back!
I now play EXACTLY $60 a month, for unlimited everything (voice, sms, data). And I was able to port and keep my same number. While this is truly great in of itself. Another great feature is because it's still a subsiary of T-Mobile, I didn't have to software unlock the HD2 at all. It was literally a matter of taking the old Sim card out and putting the new one in. The only thing that I did have to reconfig was the internet settings and the MMS settings to be able to have those 2 things function correctly. (which is very easy, I provided a link to the instructions below)
Instructions on changing internet settings and MMS settings.
http://www.mobile-files.us/showthread.php?2245-HD2-wap-mms-settings-for-SimpMo
The internet is exactly the same, I'm still getting the H icon at the top, with about 4 MB sec speeds. Call quality and range is the same, and so is the txting features. Because it's using the same T-Mobile towers as before. (which T-Mobile is very good, in Costa Mesa, CA )
Don't know about you all, but especially in these times, when money is tight, I have to really buckle down to budget and plan for big ticket items. So when I spend $400+ on a device. I truly want to be able to see more of the savings, in the long run. And thats how I cut my bill in half! They even offer plans at $30 and $40 if you don't want or need unlimited data for your phone, therefore saving your even more money.
This may not help some of you guys out there, but if your like me, and not in a contract, or you may be in a contract, and thinking this may be a better route for you in the long run (make sure you do your math beforehand, and make sure your savings outweigh your ETF from T-Mobile) I just wanted to let you know, that you do have an option out there.

Yes sir, I sure am, it displays the H icon, so I know its the HSDPA speed, which is alittle faster then 3G...however, i'm not sure if its the new HSDPA+ that you might have been hearing lately. I say that because, I dont believe WM have a status icon to show you that (because the technology is so new), so my theory is that, IF the HD2 supports it, AND its is getting the HSDPA+ signal, it'll still show the H icon at the top right of the device. But to answer your question, its DEFINITELY gets the high speed, because its still using the same towers!
I have friend that works in one of those smokes, cell, and gun stores and he has been trying to get me into this program.
It's good to go and legit.
Unfortunately I am only 6 months into my new 2 year contract...had to for my $190 Leo.

Both reported and the end of July of this year.... so unless something has changed in 3 months time, NO it is not unlimited.
I was suckered into a new mobile phone plan with a new company called Simple Mobile. They are a T-mobile MVNO (essentially a reseller) claiming to offer UNLIMITED talk, text, and data for $60/mo.
The reality is... Their $60 plan is NOT unlimited. When you hit 1000MB in one month your data service is simply terminated without warning.
They will offer to sell you an additional 100MB for $10. This policy is not stated anywhere on their website. If you call or write and complain, they will simply tell you to go elsewhere and will not provide any refund.

I mean really............. just think about it for a minute, do you really think T-Mobile is going to allow another company to use their network and infrastructure all the while having them undercut their own prices too.....not to mention the toll and expense of all pushing out all that bandwidth at "unlimited" rates.

All I can do , is speak from my experience. Since having this service, I KNOW that I used more than 1GB (stream music all day, watch YouTube, use it for general internet browsing, and logging into my Orb media server at home, and streaming TV from my PC). So I would definitely consider myself a above average data user, and have not once, been capped or throttled (trust, I would be *****ing and complaining, with everyone else). I've even checked my usage online to see it and its a little under 2Gigs of data transfer, and everything is ok. I not sure if maybe I have a magic bean, VIP, IMEI on my device (joke-e-joke ) , which is given unlimited data usage, without penalty, or maybe they've modified their contract and upped the data usage cap or something. Again, I can only speak from my personal experiences, within the last 3 months, reguarding my device and service. I don't use my phone for tethering, but I do consider myself a heavy data usage user and not had any problems regarding their quality of service thus far.
Get rid of the unlimited voice and txt, then with this guide I wrote:

You can cut your phone bill even more sharply. I'm paying about ~$20/month right now depending on my voice usage when out and about.

Hero without data plan.

So this is kinda a long story but bare with me here. Im with t-mobile and I own a galaxy s vibrant. I paid full price for the phone and bought it elsewhere so that when I got it I could simply insert my sim card into the phone and use it on a basic $40 a month (no contract) plan. I didnt need the data plan because I have wifi everywhere I go. Sure, t-mobile doesnt like that idea but there really isnt anything they can do about it.
Anyways... I was telling my friend about that and how I used my old plan to just convert it over to my new phone and I guess he went out and bought a Hero on ebay to do the same thing since he has sprint. Now I never told him to do this but I guess he figured he could do the same thing I did however you guys dont use sim cards like we do and it requires store activation.
Question... Is there anything he can do at all? Not only are they telling him he needs data to activate it but also a new plan that requires a new contract EVEN THOUGH he outright bought the phone elsewhere. Personally I call BS but who knows. Anyway to hack around this?

Wait. It's illegal to activate a phone without a data plan?? WTD??
I say resell the phone on eBay and be done with it.
Not worth trying to use a Hero without a data plan. It's what makes it a good phone. I wouldn't use a Hero just for calls.
Yea I agree with Jedis. A hero without a data plan is useless. Especially if its rooted. I use my hero as a wifi hotspot all the time and if you dont a unlimited data plan you'll get a bill like never before lol

The Hero is not worthless without a data plan. Wifi access, call and text, browsing, email, video, etc..through WiFi, SD card, camera/video, non market installation, and so on and so on.
Is a data plan really a critical part to the Hero's call functionality?

Come on, really? Do you never use Wifi? I mean I personally use WiFi 95% of everywhere I go. Only time I cannot use it is when Im driving somewhere. That comment is mute I think. I hear that a lot but its just not true at all. THe phone is still VERY usefull.
You can call sprint and tell them that you want to do an ESN change from your current phone to the Hero. You just have to get a CS rep that knows what they're doing. Alternatively you can just go to a Sprint store and they can do it.

They refuse. They say the phone wont work without 3g data plan but I know thats not true.
I have a similar situation.
I refuse to give up my legacy plan for the newer data plans.

I'm currently using the HTC Hero as my handset.
PM me for more information.
Not Useless...
I use a Hero without a DATA plan, I mean I have data, with PagePlus but it's only 20MB.. so I use WiFi everywhere, not like it's in shortage.. Now are far as useless, that's where the limited 20MB comes in for the quick/occasional e-mail. I have directions on howto change from Sprint to PagePlus just look for my posts that I've made for detailed instructions, and it's pre-paid so no suprises.

AT&T Gunning for Tethering Users

Please respond here if you are using the portable wifi feature of your nexus one and getting any SMS or e-mail notification from AT&T that they want you to pay for tethering.
I hear stories about people who get the "unlimited" data plan and then straight up abuse it (by providing internet for their entire household), which is probably why this is happening.
150+GB a month is what I consider abuse btw.
I don't see why you should pay for tethering. I think its just another way for them to make more money. Maybe for some people they don't wanna pay to have a separate internet source when they can use their phones as their internet source. I don't tether since atm I don't have unlimited data lol.

Should be free and only pay for data...just another reason why I left at$t years ago!
I have T-Mobile and as of right now my "unlimited" is still unlimited but once you exceed 5GB for the month is DRAMATICALLY slows down.
I just moved in to a new place with my wife and son and I'm trying to cut down on extra bills (I'm the only working parent right now) so I don't have internet, I just tether off my phone.
I just exceeded 5GB for the first time ever and its horrible. I'm moving so slow, on my phone that is, its unreal.

Because iOS's silly separate tethering config makes it easy to know exactly how much it's getting used. Not so simple on phones that route tethered data through the normal APN.
Yeah, I use tethering on my N1 on AT&T everyday and I haven't gotten anything from them yet. I don't abuse it, but where my house is, sort of in the woods (in Pennsylvania) where I can't get anything better than dial-up, so I use it just for basic email, Facebook, etc.
3UK now offer "all you can eat" data on Pay as you go. i plan to swap my T-Mobile SIM to my old 3 after this contract is up, i really hope the plan is still available then as i can see this being abused from day one!!
I tether my tablet to my phone almost daily, but it's pretty small usage. I am only using 300-400 megs a month on 3G now since AT&T took my unlimited away when they screwed with my account a while back. I mostly update or do stuff on wifi at home.

what's your approximate monthly data usage? are you downloading large files consistently while tethering?
Ive been using the built in tethering in most roms and have yet to have an issue since august of last year.
if you are using excessive data while tethering it may be throwing a red flag to tmobile cuz they can monitor what sites you visit as well as the user agent and the only reason i think they would do that is if you are abusively using your data connection
- Cheers
Regularly exceed 5GB a month and you'll most likely get your account flagged.
Install 3g watchdog. It'll give you a heads up before you incriminate yourself.
I use tethering and wi-fi hotspots occasionally and have never been flagged. I don't know if I just don't use enough data or I'm just lucky.
Try using a different browser. I get that redirected to that page when I use Chrome, but not when I use Internet Exploder. Also, for some reason, I still can use certain pages on Chrome (Facebook, Gmail) but even a simple Goog search will bring up the "Tmo tethering..." page for me. I find the URL of the page quite amusing as well.
I haven't had that page pop up for a while and still under the even more plan. For a while I was only able to use 100MB befor I was flagged. But now I don't know why I am not flagged nor do I care until I have to renew.

Not trying to stir things up, but why don't you just get:
a) tethering plan
b) home dsl/broadband
c) mobile web for whatever device you tethering to
You are paying for web access on your phone. Meaning surfing the web on your phone, downloading on your phone, watching videos on your phone, sending and receiving pics and multimedia on your phone, email, etc.
If you must tether to have web access on a different device, then you should pay for it.
NO, paying for unlimited web on your phone doesn't entitle you to "tether" that web access to other devices.
You can't afford an extra 15 bucks a month for dsl extreme? Then maybe you shouldn't be owning a smartphone if you are tight on cash

I'll chime in here. I recently changed my plan and they had put me on the 2gb which wasn't what I wanted. I had them change it back to 5gb and am paying the extra monthly. That said I consistently stay under 1gb because I'm usually near wifi and don't use my phone for excessive file downloads or anything. I recently went to Disney and had some school tests to take online while there. Rather than pay Disney $10 a day I decided to tether.
So are you saying that my extra 4gb a month that I don't use should just be ignored and I should have still paid the Disney fee because hey its a phone plan not an internet plan. Should I have to worry that T-Mobile is going to stop us from using this tool when we need it.
I agree that if someone is consistently using all or more of there data for tethering then yeah maybe they should be flagged but users like me who use it properly shouldn't have to be worried.
This of course is beside the fact that it shouldn't matter how I choose to use my data. What would be next? T-Mobile deciding that we can't go to sites such as YouTube because streaming videos uses too much bandwidth or I can't let my daughter go to Disney.com because its flash intensive and again uses too much bandwidth. If its 5gb or 2gb or unlimited then that's what it should be not only if you use it in a certain manner prescribed by some suit at T-Mobile who doesn't have to pay for his service anyway and therefore doesn't really understand how normal customers use the service.

This is what I think. To improve customer service T-mobile should just include some free tethering use per month with each data plan for emergency use, maybe like 50-100mb data or something. As a courtesy.
However, then you have people like the original poster who has been tethering for 9 months? WTF? 9 months really? People like the original poster are the EXACT reason why we went from a 10gb cap to 5, and now 2gb on most data plans. Thank you original poster for abusing the system and not using your data plan as outlined in your terms/conditions, now people who truely use large amounts of data on their phone are capped and throttled at lower limits because of you.
Lolz - how will I ever carry on without your approval?

This is all ridiculous, they want to charge you so you can use your laptop screen vs. your phone screen. Either way the data will be used.

UM NO, that DATA won't be used. You are obviously opting to use your laptop over your phone to complete some task because your phone is not convenient enough to complete the task. Maybe the screen is too small to surf the net or finish up your homework, or whatever the reason. So you decided to use your laptop, meaning you are no longer using data on your phone, instead you are "stealing" data by tethering, and transferring that data use onto another device to complete a task that your phone wasn't designed to do.
If your phone can do everything, and the data is going to be used anyway, then do it all on your phone. Why switch to your laptop?
Ahhh because you can't do everything on your phone. Otherwise you wouldn't switch to a more convenient laptop.
Have any of you even read the contract you agreed to with T-Mobile?
