Here is a simulation of the Panel system on the X1, it is useful if you want to show other WM users how the panels would work, actually on there current device.
I am considering posting this with Sony Ericsson as potential customers for Sony, can get a good idea of the Panels, how they work, how they look, on there current WM device, or on there PC at home.

Here on the main screen where you see a screen shot of the Silver X1.
You will see there are 3 buttons on the X1 highlighted.
Yellow Button - Changes the Silver X1 to the black X1.
Red Button - Ends the Demo.
Green Panel Button - This starts the Panels.
View attachment 154503
On the Panel screen you can tap any panel, like you do for real on your X1, and a screen shot of that Panel is displayed. Tap the screen shot again, to go back to the main panel menu. Its instuitive and realistic like the real thing, but doesnt actually launch the Panels, its a simulation.

There are 2 versions of the Panel Simulation, simply download and unzip the attached file.
1) [ Panels ] which is designed to run on any WM 6 or 6.1, on any resolution VGA, QVGA, WQVGA and WVGA of the X1 and Touch HD.
2) [Panels - PC ] which is designed to run on any PC with XP or Vista, with Microsoft Office or PowerPoint Viewer (free from Microsoft).
Where did you get that homescreen background? Looks nice!
The Today Page is HomeScreen++, with the Floyd Skin, you can find links and instructions how to install on this thread.

Another powerpoint. Okay, it's gimmicky, but I kind-of fail to see how it's useful. The reason for this is simply that there's already many pictures and even movies of the panels in action (some of which released be SE). I don't think SE would be particularly interested in a powerpoint of their own device, but that's just my thoughts on the matter.
Having said that, it does look nifty. ^_^
Poeple who have an older windows Mobile device now, can run this on there current machine and get a feel for the panels, a tiny taste of what an X1 Black or Silver would look and feel like.
The Panels are the ( USP ) Unique Selling Point of the X1, everything else is WM 6.1 standard. They set the X1 apart from the rest and I hope Sony Dont give up developing the concept further.
Here Here
I totally agree with you they should be pushing the pannels usp.
I am dissapointed that it takes so long to develop new ones and the main thing that really bugs me is I have NOT seen any advertising at all anywhere. ok only on SE site but where are the tv ads or billboards?
I think this little demo is good. nice one
X1 - images
Here are the Images for the Xperia and Panel screen shots, and there originals in zip file.
If you open them with Powerpoint on your PC, you can put any colour background behind them,
and any image on top of them before saving them into any file format you wish.
Mark A Cilenti: What is it for app which you have on Today screen to manage connections, messages and so on? Same the clock :-D Thx a lot
The Clock and connections manager is all HOmeSCreen ++, see post #190 of the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=459241&page=19 to download all the files needed.
There are 7 types of clock all of them changed at the touch of a button, the icons below the clock are chnaged by swiping them sideways, there are 4 sets, it gives one tap access to most phone functions.
3D X1 Panel Demo
I have discovered how to create a 3D image from a single photo or screen shot using powerpoint. So what I will attempt to do is to create a simulation of what a 3D X1 Operating system would look and feel like, like the original panel demo, but in 3D.
What would be the uses & benefits of a 3D operating system ?
One of the easiest 3D effects is to raise a dialog box vertically from the screen, to give it greater emphasis and visual impact. We now have 3 axis to play with, we have the traditional 2D X & Y axis, and now we have the third axis Z, to lift objects, boxes, text up off the screen, or send them into the screen.
I have constructed an example using the panels screen. On a traditional X1 all the Panels are flat and in the same plane. Here is a demo of what the panel screen would look like in 3D, with the panels raised from the screen vertically in the new Z axis. You do of course require 3D goggles to see this effect.
View attachment 162825
Individual panels can be raised above the others, giving greater emphasis, the traditional panel screen tries to do this by making the panel highlighted bigger and smaller, you have probably noticed this.
Here is demo of the effect of raising some panels above the others. The Facebook panel is particulary noticable, as are the 2 round settings buttons at the bottom.
View attachment 162826
Without using goggles you will not see the 3D effect, which is even more prenounced and noticeable on the small screen.
To see what all this would actually look like on your X1, you can simply right click and [ Save as ] all the enlarged 3D panel photos, copy to your X1 and view with your favourite picture viewer, I like S2V.
View attachment 162833
Or download the following Zip File which contains all the 3D images used in this post, unzip, copy to X1 and view with your fav viewer and your 3D goggles on.
Iv constructed an interactive 3D Panel Demo to run on the X1. It has been designed to show the visual effect of highlighting panels in 3D, and how they can bring a measure of 3D depth and emphasis to animations. Dont worry it doesnt launch the panels, it is a 3D simulation, but it would be quite easy to change the standard 2D panel screen shots, for 3D ones.
To see and apprecaite the 3D effect you will need 3D goggles, the red and blue kind. In the beginning you will see the standard 2D panel screen.
View attachment 163171
( Standard 2D Panel Display )
Then each panel in turn with be highlighted in 3D, lifting them off the screen vertically. Each panel in turn then fluctuates between 2D and 3D, giving the effect of the panels lifting up and falling down to the screen.
View attachment 163173
( 3D Panel Display )
After this intial 3D animation, the 3D panels are then ready to be touched. This is a Milestone for Windows Mobile and the X1, as for most poeple this will be the very first time you have touched and interacted with a 3D image.
Tap a panel to start it blinking in 3D, rising and falling from the screen. You can tap them all if you want, and they ' dance' vertically in 3D.
If you tap the round setting icons at the bottom, they start a 3D animation of the panels.
View attachment 163172
( 3D Panel Display Animation )
Tap the black part of the screen at the bottom to exit at any time.
With more work and more sophistcated software Im sure the 3D effect could be greatly improved, lifting the panels further off the screen. This first demo shows the basic principles of animation in 3D and how it can be used to add emphasis and impact.
The 3D Panel Demo will also run on your PC, here you will see the 3D effect much more prenounced, due to the higher resolution of PC moniters.
To run simply download, unzip, copy to your X1 and click to run. If the Demo does not play in full screen, then change the screen orientation in the Powerpoint Menu [tap and hold], or run powerpoint prior to this demo and set display to [Portrait].
I hope you enjoy this first taste of X1 Windows Mobile in 3D.
EDIT - I have just uploaded a new improved version 2 of the demo with twice as much 3D as the previous one. If you put your X1 on a flat surface and look at the the panels dancing in 3D, they look like solid objects rising and falling through your X1. THis is how I wanted it to look, striking and realistic. Have a go, you eyes have not seen anything like it
In & out of the Box
I have completed the 3D Panel demo, by placing the 3D Panels in situ inside a 3D Silver X1. This demo demonstrates 2 basic types of 3D Display and interaction.
The first is called " In the Box ", it gives you the impression that you are putting your finger inside an X1 to select the Panels. I find this to be the most comfortable 3D effect, as we are most comfortable putting our fingers inside boxes to touch objects. See 3D Screen Shot below.
View attachment 163452
( Put your finger in the box )
The other effect is to have the panels floating " out of the box ", this gives the impression of the panels floating above and out of the screen. THis is strange as we are not used to touching floating virtual objects. See 3D screen shot below.
View attachment 163453
( Selecting Panels out of the box )
The Demo has been designed manily for viewing on your PC, to show what an X1 would look like with 3D Panels. It also runs on your X1, the effect of seeing an 3D X1, inside a real X1, is a bit wierd. As regards the demo itself, heres how it works, whether you view it on your PC and use your mouse, or your X1, and tap with your finger.
At first you are presented with a 3D X1 that comes out of the screen. If you tap the X1 at the top, or click with your mouse ( PC ), the X1 goes into the screen. Tap it again to bring it out of the screen and so forth.
If you tap or click the 3D X1 Panel button, on the screen, the panels are displayed like in the Panel Demo V2 in the prev post.
Tap the 3D Left and Right Hardware keys, below the screen, to start the Panels animating in 3D. And as before individual panels can be clicked or tapped to start them blinking in 3D.
Once you have the Panels up, try tapping the Silver X1, to send it into the screen and out of the screen. See which 3D Vision you prefer, tapping or clicking panels " In the Box ", or " Out of the Box. "
It is interesting to note that 3D films tend to use " In the Box " 3D vision, ie the film happening behind the screen, with occasional " out of the box " flying objects to startle and suprise you.
To run, simply, unzip, copy to your X1 and click to run. It runs in Powerpoint Portrait mode, and requires red and blue 3D goggles.
On your PC simply double click on the File and with Powerpoint running select [View Show] from menu at the top. At any time during the demo click or tap the 3D X1 central navigation button to exit.
omg another useless thread with powerpoint...

If you have no interest in developing a 3D UI for Windows Mobile, or skinning X1 programs in 3D, then no one is forcing you to read it, or waste your time posting negative comments on a thread developing it. I dont like or use Touch 3D, but I dont go round ramdomly vandalising Touch 3D threads and insulting those who contribute to them. The personal comments you posted on a thread discussing X1 procesor speed,
" ... "freak"... and I'm saying "freak" because I don't want to say "stupid" "
are uncalled for, and lower the tone and reputation of this Site, particulary when you dont even know the person.
There are thousands of threads on this forum im sure you can find something that interests you, that you can positively contribute to.
Thanks for the bump though
"stupid" was not to you, should be intended to a supposed crappy architecture with behaviour you described.
about the rest, sorry but this is a "developer"forum. You don't develop anything. you release some presentations to auto-celebrate yourself. irritating, and pointless
3D Today Screen
To further flesh out the principles behind a 3D UI for Windows Mobile, I have constructed a mock up of what a 3D Today Screen could look like and work like. Here is a screen shot, 3D goggles required.
View attachment 163823
There is also a demo that animates the Today screen to show how it could work in 3D, and some of the 3D visual effects that can be used to good effect. This demo can be run on your PC or your X1 in portrait mode.
I will describe what you can see in the above screen shot and what happens on the demo.
1) The first effect is to animate the Tabs used in programs like Pocket Plus 4.
The [Time] Tab is pressed and the screen sinks to the bottom. The remaining tabs remain raised. Thus the tabs behave like real buttons when pressed.
2) The clock, another important Today Screen element rises and falls, to show the different looks attainable through 3D rendering. In the real thing I would envisage users being able to set the depth of the clock by a tap and hold menu.
3) Phone, WiFi and Bluetooth icons. These are raised to different levels to illustrate different modes. Example Phone Icon at the bottom would mean Phone is turned off. Icons raised half way would represent Phone on, and icon raised to the top would mean phone + GPRS data connection on, similary for wifi and bluetooth icons.
4) Next we have an animation of the Xperia Logo, rising and falling smoothly though the layers in 3D. In the real UI I would envisage animations like this pulsating, rising and falling smoothly, to add some subtle 3D action to the static Today screen we have currently in 2D, like animated wallpapers on your PC.
5) Then we have the animation of the Program icons. These are animated to convey real world pressing of buttons that fall under your finger, giving the very real impression you have pressed a real button. The Windows Media Icons demonstrates a shallow press. The Word Mobile icon demonstrates a deep press into the screen.
The idea behind a 3D UI is to have elements behaving as they do in the real world, responding and moving to your touch in a real way, in 3D.
In the real 3D UI I would envisage that the 3D rendering and behavior of icons and elements could be toggled on and off. So when you have time and your 3D goggles handy, you can enjoy and participate fully in the 3D experience, but when you are out and about, you have 3D turned off, and use your phone normally in 2D.
Having a 3D UI for Windows Mobile is no harder to create or more complicated than creating a skin for programs, a feature which many programs and software developers already allow.
This is the next step to produce a 3D skin for a Windows Mobile program like Media Player, where skins and there creation is easily facilitated and changed in the program options.
I am willing to help produce the art work for 3D skins for all other accesible programs used on the X1, Like S2U Lock, S2V, Media Player etc.
I am thus posting a request for collaboration on a 3D skinning project. ( Please IM me on XDA Devs, or post on this thread )
If you have a program you want skinning in 3D, if you can locate and post the original art work, Jpegs, PNG, Bitmaps etc, I'II have go at rendering it in 3D, so together, we can produce an installable cab file,to present to the X1 community the X1's first 3D skin. It would not be the worlds first 3D skin because WinAmp already has one, on the PC.
I dare say someone in XDA Devs may want to produce a real 3D skin for the 2D Touch Flo 3D...but I wont go there
Further work on true 3D skinning of the X1 will continue on another thread.

Guap, I couldn't agree more. "Someone" who claim himself earn a degree in C.S. keep on creating/posting technically incorrect or non-sense threads is really irritating (especially w/ seem to be eye catching topic.).
But the funny thing is he seems to be the only one that respond to his threads.
I have moved my work on 3D skinning off this site precisely because of the useless and pointless negativeity that is still prevelant on forum. It disrupts the creative process. If you have ever produced or created anything you will know what im talking about

My bad as I remember your major incorrectly. I forgot that you a "doctor" w/ a B.Sc in Chemistry. So, it's understandable that you did not even know the basic Computer Science stuff like ramdisk in your famous Turbo Speed X1 thread.
Speaking about creation, did you really create anything beside the Powerpoint presentations? Would be glad to see you if you would come up w/ some real 3d apps like PointUI, S2P and TouchFlo3D.

The main improvements in the iPhone Slider over A_C's slide2unlock are that it's compatible with any devices that can run the .net framework, So it can be QVGA or VGA, 2003SE, WM6, And it's even compatible with running on desktop windows versions. All this by running the same executable. (edit: running on windows desktop produces errors now due to using some pocket pc libraries)
It also uses the proper iPhone fonts, and it should be less ram usage. (Tested under WM6 using memmaid it only used 1.87mb ram. some users are reporting strange memory issues which is being fixed though)

if you're one of the people that find A_C's slide2unlock is incompatible with your ppc or eating up your ram, you can donate through paypal to motivate me to finish this: [email protected].
Downloads:
- This is the main program: Slider.zip.
Try using this first. Just extract it to your device or SD card and run.
Note: To use the proper iPhone fonts, copy the included iPhone.ttf to your windows fonts directory (may also require soft-reset).
- If the 'slide to unlock' animation or arrow button don't scale properly on your VGA screen, extract Slider_VGAPATCH.zip to the folder of the original version.
- If you want to change the wallpaper, use this: Slider_Config.zip.
You can only run this on WM5-6 and on VGA devices at the moment.
Put it in a different directory to your main slider app directory. Put the wallpaper you want in GFX\Res\wallpaper.bmp. Then let run the app and let it exit by itself.
It will create a directory called 'GFXOUT' that contains the necessary graphics to use with your main slider app.
Then simply copy the contents of the generated 'GFXOUT' folder to your main app's 'GFX' folder (or delete it and rename GFXOUT to GFX and put it in there).
Note: If you aren't using the VGAPATCH version you will need to resize the slideanis.bmp to half the size using an image editor.
- Due to the larger VGA icons and a different filename, my slider app isn't compatible with the original iPhone launcher anymore.
So here's a modified version of the launcher: launcher.zip that uses different icons.
It's also modified to show 'AT&T' instead of 'Unknown' if you don't have phone capabilities.

Updates:
-Update @ 4th September:
made images load externally. the app executable is only 18kb now.
added a function to make it fullscreen, but it's commented out atm as it leaves the screen mucked up when you close the app (until you soft-reset).
but as it is, adding the window state to maximized already makes it in fullscreen everything i've tested except for on the device emulator.
added vga quality background that will stretch to the resolution of the screen.
-Update @ 5th September:
added clock and date display.
added signal strength status and carrier name functions.
added lock icon.
added power status function (temporarily uses a built-in value and does not actually grab the power status at the moment though).
-Update @ 6th September:
added some 'fake' transparency effects. this would actually mean less resources are used. but i hope to find out how to do real transparency later on.
-Update @ 7th September:
added fake transparency to the slider bar and to the animated 'slide to unlock' images.
added real transparency for all the labels. the only thing left to make transparent now is the arrow button.
added dpi scaling method and VGA sized images. so it now fully supports VGA. if you are using a QVGA device, it will scale down to your screen size.
the clock will remove the leading zero from the time if it starts with it.
positioned labels more accurately.
-Update @ 8th September:
added function to animate the 'slide to unlock' image on the ppc the same way as with A_C's app
added proper battery status function.
added transparency on the arrow image.. but it's only a solid color so it's still not very good.
added iPhone fonts! if you want the app to use the same fonts as on the iPhone, copy iPhone.ttf to your windows fonts directory and soft-reset. if you don't do this it will simply revert to tahoma fonts.
-Update @ 9th September:
added a new way for drawing the fonts transparently. it will ensure compatibility across all screen sizes, and can draw the font positions exactly the same as on the iPhone (font sizes will need to be changed though).
the fonts are now always centered properly.
added an error check on the battery api. so it's now compatible running on desktop pc's again. it might also fix some ppc's.
-Update @ 10th September:
made fonts relatively positioned and accurate to the iPhone.
made fonts sized accurately to the iPhone.
changed font color of the date to the greener color it is on the iPhone.
fixed the huge performance hit and screen flashing when updating the images with fonts ontop of them. now all images that get refreshed will only do it if it's needed.
fixed a bit of code i left out in the previous vga fixes (binary and source). sorry about that, the vga fix will work now.
-Update @ 11th September:
changed speed of the slideback function to be more accurate to the iPhone.
-Update @ 12th September:
made arrow button image transparent, BUT.. once you move it it won't update the transparency.. so only when it's in the start position will it be transparent. it's still an improvement though.
modified the launcher app to use 'slider.exe' instead of 'slide.exe' so you can just use it with my slider app straight away. also fixed a problem with it still showing one battery image too big.
-Update @ 13th September:
finally got the arrow button image to stay fully transparent!!
it will now automatically open in fullscreen.
changed wallpaper and other images as the wallpaper was cropped a bit different to the iPhone.
changed slider app to use one toplock.bmp instead of a lock.bmp and top.bmp.
made a 'Config Creator' to generate the images for different backgrounds.
hosting the files on my server now as there are more than the maximum limit allowed in a thread.
improved fluency and speed of the 'slide to unlock' animation by a huge deal.
removed the blurryness of all the images.
due to using the 'config creator', the images are now VGA quality and not scaled up from QVGA.
changed carrier name font to arial. the rest will still use the iphone fonts though.
cleaned up arrow button image and moved it to the proper position.
-Update @ 15th September:
thanks to LlamaV3, the following bugs have been fixed:
exiting doesn't leave the titlebar from making it fullscreen.
glitchy graphics on the arrow button have been fixed.
carrier name no longer has a box symbol next to it.
because of this, i'm proud to announce the app as V1.0 stable! thanks LlamaV3 for getting us there!
-Update @ 23rd September:
Added LlamaV3's code to dispose of the images before exit, memory might be saved.
Thanks to Reichi, I've updated all projects to use png images instead of bitmaps.
Todo:
- add option for WM5/WM6 users to use proper alpha-blending transparency instead, so it's easier to modify the images like the wallpaper while not effecting everything else. (already have this working in another test project too)
- add wifi, bluetooth etc. status functions and icons.
- add better image buffering and/or option to use gapi/dx mobile to make moving the arrow image smoother.
- make config creator compatible with running in QVGA.
- add 'slide to answer'.. maybe..
- add registry/ini configuration. (will only add this once all the functions are complete though)
Thumbs up from my side!
I'm really curious what we'll get to see.
I'd really like to test when you are at beta stage. Hopefully it will become a bit smoother and consume reasonably less ram.
Great!
I don't get it... why would we need an slide 2 unlock if the device stays locked when we press once the power button?
Its just to add another step to do just to turn your device on!
more info pics???
Yeah I second that, pics woud be nice thanks.

Very true haha. The damn iphone craze is addicting though.
slide2unlock has worked fine for me, but if this will hog up less memory then i will definitely give it a try.
what programming language did u use. c .net or no. could you let me know . thank you
I think he used Visual Basic .NET ;-)

it only uses 18kb ram for the executable.
the other slide2unlock uses the PPL interpreter and requires use of gapi etc.
so if i get time to actually do the rest of the GUI, this would be better to use cos it's better performance (and would be compatible with all screen sizes and OS's due to using .NET framework).
but as it is now, it's just proof of concept for the slider.
btw people asking for screenshots,
theres no point atm really.
the point was to show how the slider works, and compatibility/performance. the graphics/UI has hardly been started on yet.
anyways:

Obviously just haven't understood the advantage of a devicelock application yet. How is your device reacting after a call has come in you didn't take or you received a message that is shown on the display or a reminder popped up for your next appointment and you carry your device in your pocket?
Yes, the display stays on sensitive for every input to come until your preset timer shuts it off again after, say, 2 minutes.
A devicelock application is there to prevent e.g. calling someone by accident or triggering programs without knowing while you carry your device in your pocket. As long as it stays quiet and all buttons are out of function except for your powerbutton then it's fine without such an application - then you just have to be careful not to press it by accident. On every other occasion described above you just (ok, maybe not you, but many other people around ) need a devicelock.
And: why I'm not using the default devicelock by Windows Mobile? Because it's not auto-locking my device when going to standby as Slide2Unlock can and it is not as good looking as the smooth slider...
Understandable?

even with all the images embedded in the executable as it is now, it's 68kb.

That's quite a difference to 5,5 MB of RAM consumption of Slide2Unlock!
Great, I'm really appreciating your work! Please don't stop your development.
Just a quick question:
How are you planning the transparency? I don't think you can do it with vb.net, can you?

As it's .NET it require the .NET runtime, if he adds feature like SMS counter, etc... it will add some libraries to that.
Graphics are in memory also, so for instance, one image (the background) 240*320*16bit will takes around 160Kb.
Anyway, I wish you good luck for your project.

Welcome to the hell of SLIDE
Just out of curiosity, how long the program takes to start? And when comparing to PPL, which one is easier to code?
Good luck & hope you enjoy the trip.

Slide2Unlock is slower to load but in Slider there isn't signal bar, battery and so on...
PPL and VB.net are both quiet easy to code...

I've just updated it to load the images externally.
So it's 18kb for the app now.
btw those images are jpeg's and gifs. so it can actually be at vga quality for that size you mentioned (160kb).
.NET is a more optimized framework than just a runtime. and shouldn't use up anywhere near as much ram.
try comparing ram usage with a benchmarking tool before and while using both apps, if you want to get actual proof though.

i'm fairly certain this would be easy to do and that there are apps with transparency using .net cf.
i know for a fact that it's dead easy to do for just plain vb.NET (not the compact framework version).
if all fails i can just use gapi which would definitely have it. just trying to stay away from using that so it can still work on older devices aswell.

lol thanks,
the program starts a bit under 1 second on my iPAQ.
i'd have to say C#.net would have to be a hell of alot easier when coding from scratch than a lower-level one like PPL.
but it would be alot easier if the current slide2unlock on PPL was able to work on WM6/VGA rather than just me starting from scratch.
if i ever get it to the stage slide2unlock is at, this would be alot easier to add stuff to for sure.
would you be interested working with me on this C#.net one?
i just need someone to setup the graphics stuff properly. it would need to be relative positioning to the screen size, so it can work in VGA.
i can easily do the coding parts like grabbing the time and registry keys for the phone stuff and update them,
and work on making it fullscreen,
and add an ini file to configure it, and add the ability to make it use gapi with sprites.
it's just getting the graphics setup relative to the different screen sizes that is my priority now.
it's slowing me down cos i'm just thinking about how to do it, and not actually spending time coding anything.
would really appreciate some help.
Hello guys!
I think many of us came to the thinking that, though TouchFLO 3D is great UI, we should make something alternate, something that better fits our needs. And now, i think i'm ready to create one, but first we should decide how should it look like and how should it operate.
So, i propose a kind of "brainstorming contest" where you decide about the look of a new UI. But to avoid this turning into an annoying feature request list ("more tasks on today! please! please! please!" ), here are the rules:
- NO text-only suggestions - every post s/b illustrated with pen-and-paper drawing
- NO screenshots or photoshop cooks - only hand-drawings or something that look like em (yes, you can use digitizer tablet )
- drawings are NOT required to be professional - just something to illustrate you thoughts
- you are NOT required to develop the complete UI - you may just post suggestions about UI parts, but preferred things are unique navigation idea (try to forget about tabs), apps\tabs convergence, brand new useful apps/tabs
- best contributors ideas (possible with Manila API) will be implemented and their names will be listed in "About..." screen
Posts that violate rules (even best of them), will be ignored.
That's it.
maybe this is too open ended.. do you haev some ideas of your own that you might want to put forward?

I'm already implementing ideas of my own
I just wanted to know what do folks think/dream about
show us whatcha go then!
I think D-MAN666 doesn't want to influence people, this is a brainstorming If he starts with his idea, it is probable that nobody will post a completely different concept...
This might be a useful start for interface design:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=397220
One thing I would love to see is a radial menu:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pie_menu
Similar to tap-and-hold for a context menu, but instead of a list popping up, a radial menu appears. You could fit 8-12 options around the circle, which would cover TF3d's pages.
So in usage, tap for the popup radial menu, then:
- swipe up for Contacts
- swipe right for Music
- swipe down for Home
- etc
IMO, it's much easier to be accurate in swiping at different angles/directions than it is to be precise with the default TF3d slider tabs, so you could really speed your way through the interface. The same could apply elsewhere: tap and hold a contact, then swipe up to call, left to SMS, right to email, etc.
For other thoughts, here's a read on interface optimization (for the technically inclined):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fitts's_law
And maybe later if I'm bored I'll draw some mockups
http://microsoft.blognewschannel.co...bile-7-to-focus-on-touch-and-motion-gestures/
sorry for breaking the rules, but everyone else is lol...thats a link to the WM7 concept design...along with theoretical gestures...i really digg the battery bar on the bottom and the reception bar...
Ill be the first then...
A quick drawing i knocked up... manila stays very much the same but basicaly show page navigation on the manila both horizontal and vertical..
I hope its clear enough
2 ideas here
I am going to break the rules since I'ma t work and can't really be seen drawing lol.
Here they are:
- Make use of the touch capacitative ability of the the buttons panel. It's made up of three touch panels. Maybe a swipe from left to right to unlock and right to left to lock.
- Display applications within tabs. Ex: Being able to display Icontact when sliding to the contact tab.
And for UI inspiration, I would look here:
http://www.throttlelauncher.com/portal/setupsaskins/45-091setups/69-new-minimal-flow-theme
Ok, here's my concept
The general idea is to keep most of manilla look'n feel, just remove useless animations/transitions, and change the home screen.
Changes : on the right side of the screen, a scrollbar similar to the "contacts" one appears. It controls the content of the box under the clock.
On the left, a button to maximize (take the place of the clock) the box, and a fast vibrator/ring permutation button.
So, by scrolling the bar, the content of the box changes, could be call log, contacts, fast program launcher, music player, and so on.
The idea is to keep complex functionalities (camera, tv, etc) needing full screen accessible by the manilla bar, and quick&fast features such as logs, sms, player accessible on the main screen.
Nice idea, man
Hi there,
just a thought on a possible gui for the UI, instead of tabs, layers (don't know if that's possible, but it would be very cool imho)
you could have multiple layers, and have the layers in the backgound fade out and become smaller (perspective) and use a swipe up or down to navigate
Anything happening on here?
Just wondering

Create your own Screen Savers & Locks in 10 mins- Easy Tutorial ( see last post).
[ I have repackaged the files so they are smaller and run faster and can be opended and modified on your Pc, sorry for the earlier beta versions if you could not edit them ]
Here are some 3D screen savers I have created to show off the fabulous screen and colours of our X1's.
View attachment 138471,View attachment 138472
They are standalone files, need no installation, just extract from zip, copy anywhere to your phone and click, then click the Home Icon to exit the program.
If you have Pocket Plus 4 or other launcher, place a shortcut on your desktop and tap.
These are really easy to create, using Powerpoint, and will run on your PC as well, dual purpose, multiplatform, (credit to Microsoft)
I have left the files unlocked, so you can open them on your PC and modify to your hearts content. I will upload some more soon.

Its ridiculously slow on the X1, but if Microsoft incorporates Hardware 3D accelaration into WM 6.5 for use in apps like Powerpoint, like they have on the PC, then we could soon look forward to spectacular shows like this.
Take a look at this little beauty

Again another tap and go screensaver, but to turn it off this time you have to tap the black ball !
Here is version 3, I added a little rotation and bounce to the balls to make them more realistic, but it does affect frame rate. You can open this on your PC and resize the balls and bounce them around wherever you want, and as fast as you like.

X1 is an already power hungry device, I have to charge it everynight; so TBH won't these kind of apps are overkill? they're surely bring more stress to the system and thus more power consumption.
Its only Powerpoint - but I love it !
to each his own however perhaps you can -if you don't mind to- (and I mean Mark A C) try to make those works with apps like S2U2; I'm sure a lot of people will be happy with that.

I have thought of it, I think we need permission from Senior XDA Developers to modify there S2U2 Lock which I use.
Or does anyone know of a little program that can run a file after a set time of system inactivity, Im sure iv seen one somewhere.
You have to be a bit faster with this one, and only one of the balls exits the screen saver, you can add sound effects to wrong clicks, but it bloats the file, something for the finished version maybe.
( Also I am mindful of the data limits for posts on this site, and I am grateful to XDA Developers for the great service this site provides. )

these aren't 3d. Are 2d that seems 3d. Like doom vs quake, the first is 2d isometric (seems 3d), the second has a ral 3d engine. powerpoint hasn't 3d engine
useless for me, but nice
Updated settings
I have found these settings work well with my X1, to make animations in powerpoint, fast and smooth. There is no way of benchmarking powerpoint, so you must use your eyes and judgement.
Using Shaps Advanced Config Tool
File system cache size: 8mb
File system filter cache: disabled
Glyph cache: 64kb

Fun mini game, and if you manage to score a goal you'll get a great reward, guranteed to a put a smile on your face on a cold wet winter afternoon, especially if your a fan of British Television.
Instructions - Becuase powerpoint runs to landscape by default, before you run this, run Powerpoint : Menu > Set up show and set orientation to portrait, exit powerpoint then click the file.
Or just run the file, and change orientation within the powerpoint menu.
Then tap the ball ( accuracy is rewarded )
Responds best to gentle taps.
Im toying with incorporating something like this into an alarm program, similar to G Alarm where you have to complete fun rewarding tasks to turn your alarm off. I hope S2U2 Lock goes down this road.
Anyone from S2U2 want to collaborate ?

Its a lock and a screen saver for those who dont want to waste battery on a lit up display, and prevent screen burn.
Hmm, maybe I just dont feel the 'vibe' but whats the deal with the Powerpoint presentations?
You do know our xperia fully supports OpenGL-ES ? If you insist on 'screensavers', i suggest take a look at developing applications in C#/++ (for example).
Everyone has powerpoint on there X1,the Slock program which is simple and very effective, took me all of 10 mins to do, and look at the file size 60kb, its tiny.
Plus everyone can download SLock, open it on there pc, Change the background etc and make it there own.

View attachment 154235
I wanted something to watch and play with while I was listening to music on windows media player, so I created a suite of interactive graphics, like the visualisations on Windows Media Player on your PC, but these ones respond to touch. If you like [X-Bars] , I will post the others.
X - Bars works on any WM 6 or 6.1 device, any resolution, QVGA, WQVGA, WVGA of the X1 and Touch HD, and on your PC if you have powerpoint installed.

Is an example of modifying X - Bars with a colourful background picture, example British Flag.
To run [ X - Bars ] and [ X- Bars 2 ]
Simply download this file, Unzip, copy [X - Bars] and [X - Bars 2] to your X1 or WM device. Put some cool tunes on with Media Player, then tap [X - Bars] or [X-Bars 2] to run. Tap the welcome title screen to start.
View attachment 154232
Tap any blank part of the screen to start a bar, and tap it again to stop the bar. There are 6 bars in total.
If you want to see the whole background picture tap the bars to start at the same time, there is a bit of skill involved, easily mastered.
The beauty of X - Bars is it can be very easily modified with your own background picture, if you want to change the British flag on [ X - Bars 2]. Heres how.
Modification
1) Open [X - Bars 2] on your PC with Powerpoint.
2) select Slide 3 in the left pane.
3) Select [Format] menu at the top, then [Background].
4) Click the drop down box, then [Fill Effects].
5) Click [Picture] Tab then [Select Picture]
6) Browse to select any picture or background you have on your PC.
7) Save the File, Copy to your device and run.
( I have created some ' X - rated ' versions of [X - Bars], looks crackin on the X1 !)
, , make your own
X - Boost
X - Boost is variation on X-Bars, requires good timing. Again this is best enjoyed with some music playin on media player.
View attachment 154249
As with [X - Bars], [X - Boost] works on any WM 6 or 6.1 device, any resolution, QVGA, WQVGA, WVGA of the X1 and Touch HD, and on your PC if you have powerpoint installed. Simply download, unzip, copy to your device, click to run.
View attachment 154252
How it works
As the boost bar goes across the bottom of the screen, you have to tap the green square to reveal the next bar, and progress to revealing the whole picture.
Warning : If you miss and hit the black, the slide starts again.
If and when ( and iv made it quite hard ) you reveal the whole picture, press the green sqaure again to start over or press the red square to exit.
Again this program was designed to be easily edited on your PC, and for you to use your own background picture. Heres How.
Modification
1) On Slide 2, Drag the white tab at the bottom of the slide to one side to reveal the whole of the British flag.
2) Using the [Insert] menu, select [Picture] then[From File...]
3) Browse and select any picture on your PC.
4) Resize the picture by clicking on the picture and then dragging the white anchor dots.
5) [Right Click] on picture with your mouse, select [order] then [send to the back], important !
6) Move your picture under the black background keeping it flush Left, so it is completely covered.
7) Delete the British Flag, tap and press delete, save your creation, copy to your device and run.
Quite interesting...
and where's the "x" version ??
X - Block
Test your reaction speeds. As a sqaure is revealed tap it before it dissapears, at the end, count how many you missed. I will be very suprised if anyone gets them all on there first go, or there 10th, or there 100th It is possible, if you concentrate and anticipate, you can do it.

Also I have found that using SpeedBooster, see thread below you can Prioirtise powerpoint and speed up the Presentations and make them smoother, works particularly well with X-bars and X-show, the ones that push powerpoint mobile to its performance limits.

X - Menu
Here is a collection of other projects and concepts I have been working on over the past few months, including a few new additions. I have wrapped them up in a nice Menu screen with beautiful icons that really show the X1 fabulous screen. To end X -Menu at any time just tap the beautiful background.

X - Menu
In my opinion Powerpoint is Microsoft at its best. They helped bring computing to the masses and then there suite off office applications like Powerpoint, Excel and Word brought us the ablity to quickly and easily produce our own content, and not just become passive users of commercial software.
This is the reason I did not get an iphone, it works fantastic, but I would not be able to produce my own content, it would give me no outlet for my own creativity. I admire poeple who can write code, but I work with images and powerpoint suits me down to the ground.
The pioneering open world, Operating Sytem that is Windows, Office and Windows Mobile is ideal for users to create there own content and express there own creativity, demonstrated by the many original contributions on this site and others like it.
It is the open world spirit I have tried to carry through into my Powerpoint creations, all of them can be easily edited and customised to your own tastes and your own designs.
Heres a brief outline of whats in X - Menu
Torch
This is a simple torch, the X1's screen is plenty bright enough to be an effective and simple torch. The context menu gives ability to chnage colours, apply a flash and fades away to give a full screen torch when not being used. Tap the screen to bring it back.
ScreenBuddy
As well as all the functions of Torch, it gives the ability to scroll 3 user created messages across the big X 1 and screen and flash your phone number.
X1
This is the X1 Panel Simulation.

Pencils HD
A high definition Screen saver that shows off the incredible screen resolution and vibrant colours of the X1 screen.
S - Lock
This is a simple screen lock, again easily customisable to your own background, tap the unlock icon to exit the lock.

X - Finger
This is something I first saw on the iphone and decided to reproduce it on the X1. It may fool some poeple.
View attachment 156020
Score
A simple game. Tap the ball gently in the right place to score a goal and get a reward.
e-cards
This is a concept I will develop further. Why are we spending money buying cards for our loved ones when they are simply thrown away. Anyone can buy a card and write someones name on it.
It is a greater gift to ceate your own greeting card and send it in a e-mail. Its better for the environment too. Poeple will throw away a card but are less liikely to discard an e-card.

All these creations are freeware and for personal use, you are encouraged to modify and customise them and make them your own, and post your creations on here for us all to share and enjoy.
Here is the link for Megaupload to download X - Menu, which by the way is brilliant, I will use it in the future instead of attaching files on XDA.

Note
This is stuff you dont need to know, but may find interesting. Powerpoint is hardware accelerated, thats why the first few seconds of any slide is choppy, like Media Player, the X1 processor is ramping up to full speed.
To make use of this hardware acceleration smoothly, before each slide I have a dot zooming up and down off screen furiously. This warms the processor up and gets it ready to handle the visualisations.
Also powerpoint handles PNG files much beter, faster and smoother than it does JPEGS or Windows Meta Files. Hence the better looking graphics.
X - Pulse
The inner workings of the mind...
X - Pulse is a High Definition Screen Saver, very subtle, very pleasing to the eye which loves to see detail.
View attachment 160675
Simply Download, unzip, copy to your X1 and click to run, double tap screen to exit.
View attachment 160676
Looks amazing on your PC.
Sunrise
Spectacular HD Screen Saver.
View attachment 161055
Watch the sun rise and set over the Earth, the Moon, Mars, Venus, Jupiter & Neptune. These are actual screen shots from my X1
View attachment 161056,View attachment 161057,
If ever there was a demo to show off your X1 to your friends this is it, it is silky smooth and the HD detail and effect of the sun rising and setting is awesome.
View attachment 161059, View attachment 161060, View attachment 161061
Simply download, unzip, copy to your X1 and click to run.
It advances by itself, but you can tap a planet to advance to the next sunrise, or tap black space to exit.
Sunrise will also work as a screen saver for your PC too, where it looks even more spectacular.
That Venus is one funky lookin planet
Planets
Offers you the chance to zoom in to the planets, to see them in greater detail.
View attachment 161456
The animations are silky smooth and again show the power the X1 has under the hood. This time there is no loading between slides, which advance by themselves, tap a planet at any time to exit.
I am hoping to upgrade to the o2 UK Rom2 when it officially released through SE. Can any members who have already upgraded to the official new rom , through SE, confrim that the animations in this HD screen saver are still silky smooth, with no pixelation, lag or juddering.
On Rom1 the animations in Sunrise and Planets is silky smooth, if the performance of Powerpoint is degraded in ROM 2 this would be a deal breaker for me, and I would stick with ROM 1.
Hi All,
I have created this thread so non developers ( like me), who have amazing ideas (also like me), can post a few suggestions for some new panels. Hopefully some "nice" developers will carry out a few requests and produce some amazing panels for us all to use.
Theres only one rule, if a developer has created a panel someone has suggested, can they please quote the original post when they post the completed CAB file. This just makes it easier to know what the panel does/ is for.
REMEMBER: Show some thanks to the developers who have taken time out to help us!!
I would like to be the first to suggest a panel... How about a panel that resembles the PS3 interface?? Such as the Icons and the colour changing background...
The Media panel?
However, great idea. Hope some devvers are willing to make some of the ideas posted here

I understand that it would be like the media panel, but it would be nice to have it as a today panel. so i can install plugins onto it. also the media panel uses alot of memory, even when im not using it.
Hmm... I'd like some old school arcade games panel (Games included, of course!) Pole Position, PacMan or Space Invaders.
PP would have the car racing on the track. A missed call would result in the car crashing and show burning wreckage. Text message could show another car on the track trying to overtake you. Battery life could be the frequency of the black/white trackside markings. Day/night and real time weather support. etc. etc.
PacMan: Assign functions to the ghosts, the dots, the fruit.
Space Invaders: Different functions to the rows of aliens and the mothership/destroyed homebase for notifications.
Camera Panel that let's me choose what I want to do with the picture or video i take before I take the first one each time...for example:
Press the Panel button
Choose the camera panel
choose facebook button and then the camera starts
I take a picture and it gets uploaded to my facebook account
Hit "ok" and it takes me back to the camera selection today screen
Other ideas include
save to SD card
email
SMS
Evernote
Flickr
Shozu
etc.
Steve
I would love an editable macro panel. once opened the panel could be divided up so that maybe 9 macros can be assigned to enable rapid access to common tasks.
I want a "panel profile handler". Something to preset the wireless configuration for different panels + launch predefined apps. For example if I select the On Road panel I want Bluetooth, phone...but no WiFi...TomTom to start etc.

WM 6.5 Fingernu Today Screen Panel
I have been trying out itjes WM 6.5 ROM and absolutely LOVE the today screen finger menu. Having a panel for this would be great as we could still use a more stable WM6.1 but have the interface of WM6.5!
