Mobile video chat possible ! and other things ... - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

hello
first, I use skype on my hermes 200 adsl connection via a USB or EDGE connection in both cases I had not heard the voice of my interloccuteurs (voice cuts) while they are listening
will become of the weakness of my connection or there a reason?
also, I install skype mobile beta lite (for symbian s60 v.2) on a Nokia N72 to communicate with my hermes 200 but I have not the icon of the call, and in the category of aid on I said that "the call will be possible after the upgrade skype when it will be available in your country"
could I have the icon of the call before skype lite mobile beta is available in my country knowing that they have not yet?
else, the audio chat it was possible between two windows mobile user?
Finally, set apart the MIDs (see here) http://www.intel.com/products/mid/devices.htm , are there other mobile devices capable of video chat skype? if not, they are the other software can do without 3G or wifi, personally I know 5: vochat, octro, tivi, imichat (under symbian), and microsoft portrait
and another that I could not operate: tabletmedia, of whether someone else could get it to tell me how?

Did you manage to get Skype working ok without it crashing out? The last time I tried Sykpe, I had to use Skype v2.2.020 - all the versions after that just crash and quit when I tried to use them to make calls etc.
The problem with the Hermes is that Skype almost completely maxes out the phone's CPU - you are going to struggle to have a decent conversation over Skype even using your ADSL connection.

A few questions about the Universal

Ok now i know that some of you guys have had the universal for a while now, and with the recent release on the O2 website, i'm all but certain to jump on it very quickly, but as this will be my first PDA phone, i was wondering if anyone could answer a few quick questions?
Firstly I was told the Universal had IR built in, now on the carphone warehouse site it said it didnt, can someone clear this up (I was told it can even be used as a TV remote, it'd be a novelty, but i can think of more pointless uses for the phone)
Secondly I am planning on using Skype quite a bit, I already have a wireless network set up in my house so should be able to hook up the phone quick and easy, but is it easy to make the phone use the wlan instead of the operator's 3g and gprs to access the net?
Finally I saw somebody mention games running on their phone, whats the deal with these, is win mobile 5 capable of running old dos/early windows games or are they a special format, also would an emmulator work on win mobile 5?
well I hope someone out there can help, I really want the handset, but i'd like these cleared up before i comit to the the O2 max tarif for the next 12 months
hi
1)yeah it has ir (located at the front) but i havent tried the remote apps yet.. (dont need them)
2)yeah skype works ...it also comes preinstalled on imate jasjar (extrom has the setup file)
3)some games work and some dont.. do a search on wm5 compatible apps and games and you can see the BIG list on the site here....
all in all...its the best ppcPE ever...most stable and most sexy
i think i'll be picking one of them up very soon then
the only thing that is still left to know is weither or not the phone will auto select gprs/3g for skype and the net or if i can get the phone to use the wlan instead,
thanks for the info though...
Yes you can use Wlan to get online with internet and also to skype...
Works fine without any prob so far...
Your question about games suggests a belief that Windows Mobile may run old Windows software. The answer to this is a big no - Windows Mobile, Pocket PC, Smartphone and Handheld PC are all based on Windows CE which, although being similar to programme and use, is not "binary-compatible" with the versions of Windows you'll get on a desktop (or laptop) PC. You can get a dos emulator, but it will be slow and clunky. You're better running software designed specifically for Windows Mobile.
Does anyone know if it has the on screen phone pad that supports predictive text? (in addition to the keyboard, and writing recognition bits)
The XDA IIi has it, but from what I've seen the IIs doesn't. Does the exec?
I assume you're talking about the "Phone Pad" SIP?
Yep, My JasJar has it!
fantastic! means i shall be ordering one as soon as my next paycheck lands!

Skype for non-XScale vs Skype?

OK, we can all download Skype from the official site. However, it appears to come bundled with the K-Jam with under the name
Default_SkypeForPocketPCnonxScale.CAB
Is there a difference between the two, and will the nonXScale version work somewhat better on the Wizard?
Does any one have this cab file so i can test it on my o2 xda miniS?

I think you can find it on the ftp of this site
nothing works for me
i dont no whats gone wrong for me...with 50+ hard resets...100+ times downloads and redownloads of all possible versions...with writting in all forums including skype....it just doesnt even open for me once....
funny but its true...i am in tears with this device as my brother in australia and me in india spend loads of money everyday....anyone who can help me have a version working on my device will get 100dollars gift...through paypal with loads of love...
one more funny thing worth to notice...everytime i write in skype about this issue a few people (same ones) just write after me how well it works for them and a few other things that dont happen for them...this just kills my querry and i have given up now...i just hate windows mobile 5 only for this.
Try this one. It's from the K-JAM extended rom.
EDIT:
File Upload does not work for me...
But you can download it here
http://rapidshare.de/files/8474397/Skype_KJAM.cab.html
I have installed the one from K-jam on my qtek 9100, and it works great over wifi.
I think it is probably the same as the the 1.2 beta on skype site...
Skype Non Xscale on XDA mini?
Hi, I got that copy of the non xscale kjam version of skype and tried to install it on my o2 xda mini and i get the message:
"Your device is not supported by the Skype sound engine. Calling functionality will be disabled"
Any suggestions?
Thanks
I tried all 3 versions (K-Jam, Offical, Offical Low CPU) and all give me equally bad results even with perfect WiFi reception. I tried calling the "echo123" test service and the voice lags and drops from time to time.
One time it worked perfectly but in the same config it didn't work on the next try.
@deepak:
If you need voip so badly mabe you should just consider another VoIP software like SJPhone which works realy well on the wizard. But of course it won't help you with skype contacts.

If I loaded SJPhone on a Wizard, what would be a good VOIP provider to use? I've only used Skype up to this point and I'm not familiar with the providers that support WM5/PDAs.
I tried the latest Skype beta and the Skype Beta Low CPU and the K-JAm non XScale version, but the Low_CPU version had a very bad sound quality. While the normal version works very well. So, althought the Wizard only has 200MHz (dual core) and the low_cpu version is for 316Mhz pda's, the wizard should not be seen as a low cpu pda.
So I recommend the official Skype Beta standard edition that is available on the site of Skype.
(Still trying to get SJPhone working with VoipBuster, I can connect, but I can't see anybody online to call, although they are online on the VoIPBuster desktop version)

@Matterhorn:
I tried the german provider SipGate.de . But I think all SIP compatible providers should work.

fring is now available for WM5 and WM6 !!!

For any of you who've been using a Nokia Symbian phone in recent months, you'll be happy to hear that fring has just released a WM5/WM6 fring client on a "preview" basis (beta of the beta - but not quite alpha testing).
fring was the one thing that was tempting me back to my Nokia E61 after finally "fixing" my TyTN. Basically, it's a combined VOIP/IM client that supports Skype, Google Talk, MSN and SIP as well as it's own community.
So those of you still stuck on WM5 or SJPhone forget about it. For those with any issues whatsoever with the WM6 VOIP client, forget about it. From my experience, fring SIP over 3G was even better than the built-in Nokia SIP client on the E61 over wifi in terms of call quality and availability (and that says a lot).
Does it have bugs, yes. Does it need improving, yes. But it's still the best thing out there. And even if you only use Skype Mobile, the RAM usage of fring is less than half (although call quality for Skype seems to be noticably lower than over SIP).
Anyway, just wanted to give you a heads up. Don't kill me if you hate it (and no, I'm in no way employed by them). To find it, just do a google search for fring or go to www.fring.com. Their Windows Mobile forum can be found here:
http://www.fring.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=11
I have problem to in stall it on my Hermes.... Can`t install it...
Fring - Hermes not supported
After registration i recieved the following message:
Your handset is not supported ... yet.
I'am eager to try fring, but we have to wait until the Hermes is supported.
somebody out there, running fring on a hermes?
Edit: Now i recieved my downloadlink, hmmm i will try later tonight back home and report back....
Tried this morning b4 seeing this post. It works quite well...
it works
I finally installed fring, and it works..... (just tried skype)
tried over GPRS&G3, and the phone wakes up from standby flawlessly
i also like those facts (bandwith usage):
fring for symbian phones consumes
~ 8MB for 60 min of mobile-VoIP call;
0.05 KB per Instant message
fring overhead ~ 10KB per hour connectivity
i hope those figures are equivalent to those on a WM5/WM6 device....
i kept getting a no internet connection error...
Any way to take the: "On mobile by www.fring.com" ??
Thanks for the heads up from Quist! I had just installed the new version of Skype only to have it crash everytime I make a call, just about to go back to the old version but will give Fring a go as just the fact that is not as memory hog like Skype appeals to me.
Warning to those on limited data plans
Be aware that fring automatically starts and attempts to log in every time the device is reset. Since I do a backup every morning at 2:00 AM using Spb Backup, which does a soft reset afterwards, my GPRS data usage skyrocketed. Not to mention that I was fast asleep at 2:00 AM, not ready to talk to any contacts at that time. Bad, bad fring! Bye, bye fring... I may try you again when you behave better!
I know that there is an easy way to stop it from doing this, but it is just the principle behind it. I hate programs that try to second guess my wishes and do things on my behalf without asking me whether that is OK or not. Besides, it should have the option of not using GPRS/3G for those of us on limited data plans (in my case, $30 per month for 7 MB of data download!)

DOH!!! How did I miss that one?! And guess what? There is also an option "Disable autostart". OK, now I feel like a fool. Maybe I should edit my original post to say "Make sure that you disable autostart if you don't want fring to log in at 2:00 AM after a soft reset, and make sure to disable GPRS/3G if on a limited data plan."
My apologies to the fring developers.

this software is pretty bad ass,, i finally got it to work a few days ago.... i even started a call with a friend on google and it worked great!!!
thumbs up!
Did your Google Talk call go through your speakerphone speaker? Is there a way to change that?

You have two (maybe three) options: The first is to use the built-in rear speaker (the default). The second option is to connect the wired headset that came with your device. The third option (I haven't tested this or know anyone that has got it to work, but according to Teksoft's web site it should work on the Hermes) is to use Bluemusic to redirect the rear speaker output to a Bluetooth headset.
There is no way to use the built-in front (ear) speaker as this is reserved for the phone hardware.

Video Conference (Call)

Has anybody tried to make a Video Call ?
What others devices, Windows Mobile, can Athena establish a video conference?
Is there any third parts software, for the rest of Windows Mobile devices, with only one camera maybe, which is available and compatible?
I do videoconference calls with any cellular having 3G and the ability to have videoconference.
For sample my colegue at the office has a Nokia N70 and we have regular videoconference calls whenever I find a problem in a building that I want to show. So I do a videoconference and once connected I swap the videoconference to the read camera in order to show the problem to my colegue.
I try it with some other Nokia and works too. Offcourse they need to have videoconferencing capabilities. And off course you must be in a 3G network.
Best Regards,
mahjong
