problems you guys can't solve? - Touch HD General

Hello to all.
Just received my touch hd and have it on the initial charge now.
Been reading many threads on here for a while now and amazingly, it seems every problem and issue can be fixed.
This is the first mobile device I've had of this calibre (and value) and I feel really cautious. Especially with only a short return policy that came with it.
However, are there any known common problems that have actually warranted a return?
Any experiences, hardware or software, that couldn't actually be remedied with a hot fix, tweak, hard reset, setting...?
Without much detail, I've heard of a few recalls at orange, but were they because they hadn't met you guys
So anything to look out for?
Hope the above makes sense.
Thank you.

Most problems that i had/have are because WM.... I think most problems would be solved if some other OS would be on HD...
As MS windows, most users (as I see) have different problems, so it's difficult to solved....MW are just the same as windows on pc - you can have fixes every month...
Before i had problem wit outlook.exe (soft reset fixed it), two times my phone rebooted by himself, couldn't install one fix for HD (hard reset fixed it), and now sometimes i have errors when sending sms (don't have a clue why - i'm not the only one) - no one can solve it ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=473665 ) .
But, that's my opinion......

The only hardware issue that I can come up with is the paint stripping problem on some of our loved phones. I personally have two very small chips nearby the usb plug (and i could bet my right hand I was not the responsible for those). I don't know if someone managed to get one in warranty return though. You might search for "paint stripping problems" i'm sure the thread will show up.
in this wiki page as well there are known issues bugs and so on:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Blackstone_Issues
EDIT: oh and i forgot, software related, the mp3 playback issue which is very, very, VERY annoying. (all infos can be found in the wiki anyway)

One more lovely issue
If I soft-reset the device while it is being powered via USB (doesn't have to be sync'd, just being powered) the device locks up at the Windows Mobile Splash screen...

Someone seems have found the root cause (in japanese)

I found the issue to start after a week, starting on the right hand side, and then moving towards the centre of the screen. Happens all the time now.
Voda v1605 S/N - 626
Somebody with the problem needs to disassemble their TyTN and power it up with the front cover completely removed and the digitizer assy loose. If there's a mechanical issue based on the gaskets or some other case ideoysncracy, the alignment issues will immediately disappear. If my TyTN starts acting up I'll do this myself. We need to divide this problem to conquer it by answering this first all-important question:
Is it Hardware, Software or a combination of both?
HTC's own repair kit tends to indicate that its hardware and that the above test will resolve any issues. However, there have been reports that software changes solve it too and these are backed up by a compelling video that shows a person tapping on the same spot of the kbd SIP and sometimes it would register the correct key and sometimes it would register the key to the right of the one tapped. If the problem were hardware, this wouldn't happen; the offset tap registration would happen consistantly.
Sleuth255, unfortunately it is a hardware issue.
HTC is replacing faulty units and repairing (changing the LCD) if you don't have the original box.

I partially concur. Here is the video that I referred to earlier which, after closer examination, has made me change my opinion as to its root cause:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQIVv4b2jOI
(notice how his alternating finger pressure on the right side of the case is causing the alignment to shift right by one char).
Nevertheless, I still see posts such as this one which point to a software related cause as well:
mcalbala said:
I had the alignment issue, and the phone started to slow down, I bit the bullet and reimaged the phone (clear memory and reset to factory default), reinstalled software and resynced, and the problem went away totally - seems to be part of the software for the Tytn - Good that it doesnt seem to be hardware related

Maybe there's two completely different issues that are being tied together here.
save yourselves the headache and send it for replcement ...!!
@sectorlord: I'd say hard reset first and run for a day w/o re-installing any software. If alignment problem re-surfaces, send it in because you've got the hardware problem that HTC has identified.
Why be without your TyTN if its not hardware? Remember: I'm not disagreeing with the hardware hypothesis here. It's obvious that one cause of screen alignment problems is digitizer/case related. What I'm saying here that there may be two seperate issues here, both of whose effect are screen alignment issues. If this is true, posters following the "just send it in" rationale who actually have the second software related issue, will be sorely disappointed when they get their TyTN back after an indeterminate wait based on regional service differences because the problem will crop right back up after they restore from backup.
I myself can't ignore data just because it doesn't fit the model. Calling this problem solely hardware ignores the data that I posted above from mcalbala as well as countless other posters who have reported similar success from hard resets.
I guess I'll just have to wait for that first post from someone who sent their TyTN in for the fix only to have the problem crop back up to see if my "two problem" hypothesis is correct.
I agree with you... I know some people have success getting rid of the issue by :
1) Hard reset
2) Upgarding ROMs
3) Loosening up the screws
4) Offsetting the calibrations
5) Unticking the USB-PC options
etc ..etc..
I tried all of these, and my unit improves but never totally fixed. I am trying to save you the headache I got.. if you can swap it..do it !
I returned my Trion, and bought a new Dopod838pro WWE HT636XXXX yesterday...
Knock on wood... It's a gamble on my part. I just trust Dopod HK, that they will release these units when this issue is resolved, and they release it last Thursday starting with HT636XXXX.
Is it fixed...I dont know... but surely I will be screaming on SIS if not..
Few days ago I received my repaired tytn back. SN HT627.
According to the serviceburo it should now be repaired according to the instruction of HTC.
parts used:
1x Gasket, Keypad.Apache For.
1x MYLAR,LCM CONN, BREEZE FOR
So, hopefully this really solved the problem.
Regards,
Piet

Reopening the question: A week ago suddenly the notorious screen alignment problem appeared on my device. Never had it before, now every 2 hours, sometimes after 10 minutes already. In my case the SA-problem has several appearences: one time it misallignes a bit to the right, the other time a far end to the left. But always in horizontal line. B.t.w.: in landscape mode the alignment problem always was gone!
So finally after trying everything I knew (from XDA) I did a hardreset with the intention to send it back for repair. But now after the hardreset my SA-problem seems to be gone! I'm testing for hours now, do everything what might cause the problem but nothing (till so far). I only installed TomTom 6 after the hardreset...
Could this be software (programs or settings) cause after all?

TyTN problems - WM6 to blame?

Hello everyone,
Lately I'm having a lot of issues with my HTC TyTN while in the past I didn't have any. I believe they all started when I upgraded to WM6, but the thing is I don't want to downgrade. However, what makes me think twice about it is the fact that I dropped it down few weeks back and there's a major scratch down at the bottom of the screen where touch screen there doesn't work and when you press there it goes a bit to the left or right accordingly...! The screen needs calibration like all the time because it's not accurate.
Moreover, sometimes the hardware keyboard doesn't work and I need to make my phone sleep and then wake it up again and it would work. Last night I also got a key locked.. and it wouldn't work until I made my phone sleep and then work again.
Additionally, if my phone is locked, and I receive a phone call, and while talking to the phone I receive a message, when the phone call ends the phone is like crashed and I need to make it sleep and wake up so that it works well again.
Anyone who can give me any kind of suggestions or advices on how to solve or decrease the problems please?
Thank you.
None of those problems are WM6 problems.
You said you dropped your phone so i think its a hardware fault? Coz for me WM6 save's my HTC 8525 from bricked and now works fine.
You think? I think the screen alignment problems might be due to dropping the device on the ground once but I doubt the rest are. I believe they are driver bugs from WM6.
Do you think I should take it to get fixed? Would my warranty cover that?
Anymore have an opinion on the matter, please reply. Thanks.

I had the same, when I used WM 5.0 (it happens on three diffrent devices - all of them comes from T-Mobile UK) - after upgrade WM 6.0 (Schaps) it's still happens, but very rarely.
Drivers might be part of the problem, but I think dropping it has played a big part.
If it was me I'd downgrade to the original setup (follow MrVanx's guide) and try that. If the problems persist they are hardware related, but you are in a position to try for warranty because of original set-up. If the problems go away, upgrade again and try to isolate which bit of software caused the problems.
But the reality is that if you've dropped your phone hard enough to scratch the screen that's probably the root of the problem which is probably not covered under warranty anyway...
Well it wasn't that hard hit on the ground, it's the fact that there was a tiny rock on the ground and that's where the screen hit...!
I have the same problem. Dropped it for about six months ago. The problems started just a couple of weeks ago. Strange. I'm gonna try the waranty. Even if I have a few scratches. Also my speaker doesn't work anymore.
Any more suggestions/ideas?
My first response is the definitive response.
If you are still concerned that WM6 is the problem, then go back to WM5.

dead bottom buttons

hi all, i bought a tytn at ebay, but
the after a short time of using the bottom buttons, they stop working.
touch screen and buttons on the side are stíll working, but the bottom buttons are dead.
sometimes after turning off amd turning on they are working for a short time again. a restart also helps to make them work.
but its not funny to restart every 10 minutes.....
it is an e-plus tytn from germany with wm5.
do u guys think that it is a hardware or a software error?
I seem to have this problem on and off myself and think it's related to either the rom on the phone or the radio rom but am not sure which. It seems sometimes I have this problem and it seems to come and go depending on what combination of rom/radio rom I have installed. If I was smart I'd find a combination that works well for me and stick to it but I always like to play with things so typically every day or two I'm reseting
yeah, i have the same problem.... i hate to restart the phone every now and then, but I need to figure this out sometime soon, or I'm gonna upgrade to WM6 to see if that solves my problem. lol...
did anybody else have an idea to solve the problem?

http://cnn.cn/shop/8525tytn-flex-cable-p-1732.html
I opened up my tytn, to find out the problem, and I found a small crack in the flexcable mentioned above.
Before it was never opened nor did anything strange happen with it, so this seems to be yet an other production problem/fault..
More and more people seem to have the same problem, time to presure htc for a repair....
Ok for me this is too late, but all for the good cause.. will just order myself a new cable and try to swap it..
Any ideas where to get the flex cable these days? Not finding it at the link above and internet searches aren't panning out either.
FYI:
Just got back my HTC TyTN from service under warranty, sent for exactly the same problem.
The technician I spoke to directly said that maybe about 90% of the lower keys malfunctions are caused by the lower keyboard board behaving erratically and it is a well-known hardware problem.
A board replacement solved it, my TyTN is working perfectly again, they also replaced the stylus holding rubber (which was broken already from the early days) and, surprise, they upgraded my WM5 device (I had to revert everything to the initial versions before handing it to them) to the latest official HTC WM6 Rom. Even bigger surprise, although what I gave them was a WWE device, when I got it back they had upgraded it to the localized (official Greek) version. Life is good.
Anyways, seems the only real solution to this is a visit to the repair store, hopefully under warranty and reverted back to the original settings...

[Q] HTC Legend Touchscreen Problem

hi,..
i own a HTC legend with A1 (Austria) Branding and made a 2.2 Over the air update. when i started to use it i thought that it would be faster but this has now rly changed.
Last thursday i could use my legend properly but then - 2 hours later the touchscreen didn't work any more .
i tried to unlock it but only the right side of the TS worked.
so i already tried some of the tips of some threads of XDA like hardreset , refreshing the update , and now it is a bit more useable , so i can slide the homescreen pages on different points but i cant start apps with touching..
Does anyone have a solving for this problem ?
I have no idea if the froyo update is responsible for this but I have the same problem. The top part of the screen is no longer responsive. I cannot slide the notification bar down and sometimes crazy things happen on the screen without tapping anywhere. This makes the phone practically unusable until I reboot and it usually works for some time even though the top part is not responding (notification or letter 'q' when in landscape).
Can I try something or I have to visit service? I cannot find the link where they explain how to change the refresh rate as you mention could you please provide it? also I found a couple of other threads dealing with similar problems and it looks like there is no solution am I correct ?
thanks
same thing happened to my Legend. After two months, the thing appeared, next few days all was good. Another two months and it came back. I had to send for service: they DIDN'T KNOW WHAT WAS WRONG and DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO DO, anyway, after they sent it back to me, it's working again (until now, which is almost another two months)
My guest: there's some weird thing with the range/sensitivity of the touch screen, maybe a problem of the screen being magnetically/electronically charged without being discharged (as it should), after a while (e.g. a week) the problem disappears.
I far as I know, there's no solution. I have even found a clip on youtube (search for 'htc legend touch screen problem' or something) describing the same situation, maybe you should take a look there to for a abetter description of the case.
Anyone, please, if you know a way out of this, please, post it!
I have the same problem, the top notification bar cannot be pulled down in portrait and in all orientations I cannot use the touchscreen near the HTC logo. Mine is an unbranded and the problem just started this morning. I am running a custom rom from here and have been running the same one for a while so I don't believe the ROM is responsible.
Edit after using multitouch visible test from the market, it turns out I can't get a response that is higher than pixel 57 vertically.
I have already sent mine for service under warranty. I hope everything turns out well, because I really like my legend (form factor/design/specs). After the slow down I experienced with the froyo upgrade this problem came to spoil all these months of happiness. I will keep you posted.
EDIT:
I got my Legend back from service 3 days ago and everything looks fine at the moment. I hope that my bad froyo experience has ended.
According to the documents I received they just performed a ‘software upgrade’. This means that the problem was related to software. I guess some files could have been corrupted during the OTA froyo update. Maybe that also explains the sluggish froyo experience.
I can only suggest that before any critical updated a factory reset should be performed and hope for the best. I will update this thread if this serious problem with the touchscreen ever returns.
yeah i sent i to the warranty service too . But they said that the problem has mechanical reasons. So they suggested to repair it for 218(!!) Euros . -.-
I had exactly the same problem HTC have repaired it under waranty, so must have been a software issue, looks lik eits happening to quite a lot of poeple, pretty unacceptable consideringhow long it took them to release the Froyo update, not sur ethey bothered to test before releasing
Solution for screen problem ( HTC LEgend)
I had this problem also with my phone
touch screen works only for certain part of my screens
the top part where i cannot access
Solution
I change digitizer and
everything works well
only buy the digitizer from ebay and replace with the one that is not working
and everything should be fine after that
good luck

[Q] My Iconia A500 shifts and zooms in & out on its own!

Hello,
I'm hoping someone can shed some light into my delema...
I've been researching regarding my issue but haven't found any answers as of yet (I feel like I'm the only one with this annoying problem).
My problem happens more times then I would like. I would be browsing the web, watching a movie, or just on the desktop screen, then all of a sudden the screen starts wigging out on me. It would shift erratically left or right, zoom in and out in a spastic way and while all that is happening it doesn't respond to touch. The only way I would recover from it is if I hit the power button to close the screen then on again. That seems to remedy it temporarily until it decides to act up again at random times. My other issue besides that, is that touch would become unresponsive at times when just going through the motions. Turning the screen off and on again would fix it but will happen again a few more times during the day.
Has anyone ever have these problems and if so have you been able to remedy it? I may end up having to return it to Costco online and get it replaced.
Things I've tried: (Not in order)
- Removed root and set it back to stock.
- Hard reset.
- Flashed different rom
- Removed all third party apps
- Full wipe
(Thanks for reading)

If you've done a full wipe and format before flashing ROM, it very well could be a hardware problem, as the wipe and format should have removed all residuals of previous ROMs, so you can rule out OS/software as the issue.
Just an educated guess.

Sorry I didn't post what I did in order. Yes I've done full wipes before flashing any rom. Even as far as to bringing it back to stock and it would seem fine for a bit then out of no where it would just wig out on me.
You could be correct of it being a hardware issue... Sucks that I may end up having to return it.
Edit: Actually I haven't tried formatting. I will give that a go. Thanks!
Edit 2: Didn't work. Off to Costco I go for a refund:/ I may just decide on a different tablet.... Ipad2 maybe? LOL (Just kidding)
Hi JJdeVega: Have the same problem a day after i bought it and the problem was the touch sensor malfuntion. Returned and exchange to Costco with new one no more probs.
I am not sure why ,but lots of tablets that come from Costco seem to me have issues.or is it that they just sell more then anyone else.
I have similar issue but with font size shrinking to smaller then readable at times.ideally while browsing web forums.I have to close browser and start again.I believe it has to do with site adds changing.

Hey, that was my exact problem and just for u to know all the things u tried were software related and the problem really is hardware (or at least in my case) the touch screen has a malfunction in it but to make sure u can just download 'touch test' free from the market and leave it open for a while or when the problem shows and see for ur self its like invisible fingers are touching ur screen and that was to make sure that the problem is hardware related if so do as i did .. replace it
hope that i helped
If I helped u in a way or another click "Thanks"
very good
Well said good info on the program wish I knew before. Thanks for the info.:
Is it only when charging the device? If so, this happens to me too. I don't know if it's the tablet being faulty, or charger, or the power that's generated for my home, but it is VERY annoying. I can not use the tablet while charging. I can't return it now, as it's been maybe 3 months already? Anyway, just wanted to let you know that it could be only happening when charging.

if u have a warranty it doesn't matter how long u have been using it, i got mine replaced after three months use so u dont have to return it u can just ask ur agent for a replace because yours has got a problem in it ( if u do have an agent and warranty)
Press "thanks" if i helped u
Thanks everyone for all the suggestions and replies. I ended up returning it. Then found the Samsung Galaxy tab10.1 right next to the Acer, so purchased that instead. Kept it for another two weeks with no issues then came across the New Asus Transformer Prime tf201 and couldn't be any happier! Too bad Costco doesn't have it since it's all online pre order. I would totally take advantage of the 90 day return policy!
I am experiencing the same problem, but it is of a fairly random nature. it comes and goes. When I contacted J&R about it, they forwarded me to Acer customer service who ask me to send the device on my dime both ways, they would test it and decide if it qualifies for a replacement or if they send it back as is. Uhh, I am not happy. Anyone having similar experience?
