Push Mail - XPERIA X1 General

Hi guys
quick question ..
I would like to have Microsoft Push mail activated on my phone however I ve noticed that if I do, it keeps me connected to the internet throughout the entire day... now I am on data flat so I m not worried about costs however, I figured that being constantly online drains the battery pretty much ..
so .. is there a way of dealing with problem? can I have the phone check for emails and automatically disconnect after it has done so?

I'm just an amateur and I certainly cannot pretend to know everything, but it seems to me that what you're asking for isn't really what Push is about.
You might be better off simply configuring the default mail programme to check for mail at short intervals.

You can set when to pull email from your ActiveSync Menu. This way it only connects to ActiveSync over the air when you specify.

as they said, just go to activesync ->menu-> schedule change to every hour or whatever
pushmail (as items arrive) requires an active connection between the phone and the mail server so gprs must be connected all the time

If you pull every 15 minutes you'll probably end up using more battery (connecting, checking, disconnecting).
My phone is always connect to GPRS/HSDPA and I've not had any real issue with the battery life.

Agree with Artesea.
My data connection is better when left on. I found a heavy use of battery, in the early days, when i used to have it connect when it needed.
If you are on a flat data plan, i advise leave it on.

Email Automatically

The 8525 has the email box with multiple accounts, but the only way to check the mail is to individually send/receive each inbox...then it shows the numeric count of new emails on the Today screen...
one of the accounts is hotmail and i have it set to receive automatically in settings and it doesnt.
any way to have it populate new mail automatically like a blackberry?
RE Email Automatically
Each account has an option to be checked automatically in an interval which you specify. I use this setting to check my POP3 and IMAP accounts every 30 minutes (I mean my PDA checks them automatically)
when creating the mail account look in the advanced option menu (still accessible if you edit the account settings).
you'll have an option to check mail at different time intervals.
beware that unlike a push mail mailbox your device will power itself back up during the mail retrieve! this kinda sucks if you want to check mail every 15min or less and have the device standby set to 5min (your device will essentially be turned off for only 10min at a time before each mail check:
mail check -> device wait 5min before going into standby -> device stays off for 15min -> mail check -> device wait 5min before going into standby -> device wait 10min (15-5) before checking mail again....
this will definitely put a nice load on the battery.
i wish there was the ability to use push mail on multiple accounts and/or multiple folders (as is, you will only get alerts for incoming mail in your inbox... not any of the exchange subfolders).
for some reason when i setup xpress mail initially, I added a POP account...which is in the hierarchy with my pocketmsn hotmail account in the main email program.
when i goto Tools, Options, hotmail isnt listed nor is the POP i setup when installing Xpress mail. The comcast POP i setup after xpress setup was complete shows up and i set the interval to 30min.
now i cant figure out how to either delete the hotmail and POP that I cant access and re add them or access its options

Are you ABSOLUTELY sure about this? I've used periodic mail checking in Messaging a lot (also see my Mailer Bible, where I've elaborated on setting this up) on my Wizard and have NEVER encountered problems like this.
That is, at leats on the Wizard (the TyTN may be buggy or you've overlooked something?), you will NOT have power consumption problems if you enable periodic mail checking.
How can I set a periodical email check to more than 60 min?. In my TYTN the powerdrain is aprox. -20% if I set to check every 60 min. Specialy in UMTS networks the powerdrain is bigger.
I could live with that value but there is a nerving bug:
because of periodical checking the network connection stays switched on (does not disconnect after each mailchecking). When I try to dial a tel.number the phone does not dial out (only after I disconnect the Inet connection or after trying to redialing 2 or 3 times).
Thats why I would like to set my TYTN to check mails only 3 times per day automaticaly and after each check turn off networkconnection automaticaly too.
Who can tell me how to do?

i'm pretty sure it does... at least i know that if you're doing it thru wifi it needs to turn the phone on to be able to associate with the AP. it was the same on my old Pocket PC 2003 device.
I'll test with connecting to my EDGE network only to see if that also turns the device on.

you could set the device to stay connected to your 3G network constantly. there are a couple tweaks out there that will let you do that (it's a reg mod).
I'm always on my EDGE network and haven't seen the significant power drop (at least not that I can't live with).
ok i've tested the settings.
it appears that with a permanent 3G connection the device will receive mail at set intervals without powering itself back on.
If you have wifi turned on it may still power itself in order to associate with the AP though I haven't tested this.
In a similar fashion if your 3G or GPRS connection isn't always on the device may need to power itself in order to establish the connection.
Bottom line is that you wanna test this before being on the road with a dead battery.
Cheers,
Sam
any idea how to alter the settings of the POP mail I setup when setting up Xpress mail that I mentioned above? since it isnt listed as an account in options
and how to alter the pocketmsn hotmail account that has its own inbox that is also not in the options account list
About power drain:
Of course the Tytn stays in sleepmode if periodical email checking is set. It only wakes up if a new email arrives. But because of beeing permanent connected to network the power drains quicker than if not connected permanently. As I said befor if you use UMTS the powerdrain is aprox. 20 % more! In GSM network it is less (dont know how much cause I live in a area where UMTS is always available)
To Samwe52000:
Beeing permanent online does not solve my nerving bug, because I can make a call only after I switch off the Inet connection.
Am I the only one who has this problem? This bug does not happen all the time, but I found out if the phone is in sleepmode for more than 1 h then the bug happens.
For me its more important to have a working phone than checking mails every 30 min. (I dont get so manny, so 3 or 4 times a day is enough and I dont care about the extra datatransfere I have to spent for new dialing in)
So again my question:
1) Whow to set autom. checking Emails to every 8 hours. (in settings only max 60 min possible)
2) How to disconnect Networkconnection automaticaly after each periodical Emailcheck. (Is the program "GB Soft-tweak WM5" working well for the Tytn? Some Tytn-user uses it?)
3) How to solve the bloody telephone bug (no call if permanently online)
Many questions, I know but maybe someone can help.

thanks for lookin, looks like forwarding to a push email account is the only way to go for hotmail in real time according to that thread.
edit: after reading that I randomly found by playing around that as long as i am signed into msn messenger i get email notifications with topic and sender info.

My phone is constant data transfer, help.

My phone constantly transfers data eating up the battery. I manually turn off data on the comm page. It stays off briefly then begins again. Any ideas?
Try this file, unzip, transfer over, install, open NO GPRS from the programs menu and hit toggle.
That should do it, just hit toggle to re-enable.
This is posted elsewhere, try using search first.
go to activesync, menu->schedule
and set "peak times" and "off-peak times" to "manually"
I once had this when I had an MMS trying to download. Delete the MMS header from your mailbox or specify the network/connection which should be used for downloading MMS.

Check the MMS...
But the big question is... do you have push mail or perhaps a weather program?
Push especially will keep your data connection on as it is constantly polling your email...
The good news is if your are connected it doesn't necessarily mean that you are using data. If you are in a 3G area then an H icon will appear instead of the 3G icon while there is a data transfer...
If you want to stop it alltogether check out MoDaCo's NoData or the GRPS above..
No push email or other data service
I have my personal email on 30 minute retrieve increments other than that I have no other data services. My phone is just on this constant data call although no data is being transferred. This subsequently drains my battery awefully fast.
well, what is exactly the problem? is it that your pda
"is just on this constant data call although no data is being transferred"
or
"constantly transfers data" ?
More details.
The phone is engaged in a constant data call represented by 3G with the left and right arrow, however, no data is actually being transferred. The battery is draining within 8hrs on standby because the high transmit to receive ratio. Although no data is transferred the radio constantly interrogates the cell site thus throwing out unnecessary power. If I manually disengage via the communication manager, the phone will hang up the data call for a brief period, but will reengage fairly quickly. I can't find any settings that would create this situation. I downloaded the program in this post, but the phone still continues the data call. This has never happened on this phone until a month or so after installing the ROM flash with WM6, but I can't be sure if there is a direct correlation with the new flash. Thank you all for your help.

try turning off this 30 min email and make it manual to see if this is the cause...
not sure if u have htchome weather, because it will also auto update every few hours...
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=My Pocket PC keeps connecting to the Internet.
have you checked the activesync schedule time?
furthermore goto commmanager and disable direct push. if your commmanager does not show you the icon to disable direct push, install schaps advanced config and activate there the icon.
i am pretty sure that one of these two options causes the problem.
what other apps have you installed?
if all this does not help, hard reset your device and install/config one app after another.
Same Problem
I've got the same problem. I'm using the default HTC WWE ROM. At random times, sometimes twice a day, my "Rogers Internet" data connection (GPRS, EDGE or 3G) connects automatically and doesn't disconnect. If I catch it happening and click cancel, it tries again. It will not give up until the connection has been established for at least 10 seconds.
I've gone through every program I have, checking to make sure the auto update option is disabled (if there is an auto update). I do not use the direct push and therefore, activesync schedule is greyed out.
Any ideas?
I'm suprised that it drains your battery so quickly. My phone stays connected at least 90% of the day, and I usually have at least 70-80% battery when I get home from work, usually more. The only time that it gets drained quickly is when I'm browsing the web too much on NetFront 3.5...a notorious battery drainer.
Sorry I couldn't help...but maybe it's a battery issue? Since I'm connected so much and have no battery issues? Or maybe a radio change could help you?
I don't have any abnormal battery drain, just weird auto-connect problem.
are you sure you have checked every single program? there has to be something that's trying to connect to the internet to grab data. weather apps, time sync, quickgps (i know, ridiculous, i'm just throwing it out there). try looking at what processes are running in the background using a task manager. that might help you eliminate suspects.
I have Spb GPRS Monitor on my phone. I've been looking at the logs. There is no pattern to the connections and they seem to be never more than 20k connections. I've installed NoGPRS and will use that while I'm sleeping. Just weird that it connects at all.
I had a similar problem, so I installed KaiserTweak and changed the setting to disconnect from 3G after use and that did the trick for me - no more constant connection and the battery stopped heating up and dying quickly.

Exchange emails in standby

I have a new AT&T Pure with an exchange email address set up to receive emails as they arrive. If the phone is not in standby mode the emails come in without a problem at the same time I receive them in Outlook. Once the phone is in standby mode (screen turns off) emails come in sporadically or not at all until I wake the phone up. If I just set it to dim and not turn screen off I am fine. Is anyone else having this issue?
I've found ActiveSync on my Touch Diamond2 very unreliable. It will work for a while but repllog.exe crashes at some point, usually overnight. Only fix is to restart the phone or manually kill the task - it's often doesn't respond to shutdown (indicating it's crashed) and has to be manually ended. Doing a sync immediately always works.
I'm hoping that they've fix this bug in WM 6.5...
Cheers, Rob.
This is a brand new phone with WM 6.5. Everything works finew when phone is not in standby. Once in standby emails don't come in when they should.

You mean by standby, not cable/activesync attached?
I'm still wondering about gmail push, I set everything up as said, but when I'm cabled to my work computer, I don't get gmail.
I have to disconnect and then get gmail push. **sigh**
Ahh, isn't that a setting on ActiveSync? Something about allowing internet connection when docked. I think when a WM is connected via ActiveSync, the internet connection goes through your PC which sometimes is blocked.

No, I unchecked that, same result, even after powering off/on. I think that option is misleading
some thoughts and my experience...
Do you expect emails to arrive over wifi, or gprs, The behavior is different by design.
As they arrive, in schedule settings for example only works as most people expected over gprs.( this is also called microsoft direct push) and can be toggled on/off in settings tab on most htc phones.
this also requires a constant open data connection over gprs. the phone will try to open it for you if you enable direct push option.
its also important that the carrier supports long http requests over grps for direct push to work correctly.(this is why gprs need to be open all the time)
if you deactivate the gprs-data connection, direct push will fail until it succeds a long http to the eas server again.(exchange active sync)
when i use direct push option over gprs, emails always arrive instantly (within a few sec.) to my phone regardless of standby or awake. 98% of the time anyway...
Now i have set mine to sync over wifi. however not pushed to my phone as it only works over gprs.i usually set schedule to 5 min.
if set direct push/as arrive over wifi the schedule seems to change depending on how often emails arrive. the polls seemes to be longer and longer apart if mailbox is idle. schedule a bit unclear...
i figured this out by setting a constant ping from pc to the phone and watched the response in standby mode.( wifi not set to always on even in standby) so i got response time out most of the time.
i noticed that after a certain time the phone began to respond to ping for a few seconds( active sync activated wifi in standby to check email according to my setting in schedule and then deactivated it).
if i had unread emails in my exchange mailbox they arrived in the phone as well.
i also read a paper where the direct push schedule where explained by microsoft. it is constructed that way to save as much bandwidh as possible,
i have based this on my observations only.
it would be nice if someone could find a technical paper explaining this further.
tests was done on htc p3600 and stock topaz. wm 6.1
i will do tests again on the 6.5 rom as they come online.
a
Phone is not docked nor am I connected with wifi. Just a GPRS connection. What I mean by standby is that I have the setting enabled to turn off screen after 1 minute.
I have no problem with push email from my exchange server. Remember Push email only works with cell data connection as pointed out. And if you establish ActiveSync connection with a desktop PC, it will be auto-disable and changed to polling instead regardless if you keep the data connection open or not.
I have never connected this phone to a PC.
exchange active sync and wifi
i previously had a TYTNii (Kaiser) which would exchange sync through my home and office wifi (over GPRS) when wifi was available and connected.... However on my Topaz i am unable to exchange sync through wifi when connected for some reason. it will only work through phone connection with wifi off. It appears there are additional connection settings with this WM6.1 device... (priority settings for one connection type over another) but im not sure how to set this up... Help on getting exchange sync working via wifi would be appreciated thanks..

Data connection, no auto-disconnect?

Hi guys,
I have recently moved from symbian platform to WinMo. I do have a question regarding data connection. Does it ever auto disconnects? (for example in my old N95 if I clicked sync in my mail application, the phone would connect, download new mail and then auto disconnect when the job was done)
Also the phone would disconnect from data connection after closing app that was using it.
Now with my HD2 when I sync email, refresh weather etc the data connection stays on. Do I have to disconnect it manualy every single time so it doesnt drain my battery? It is very annoying since I have to do it manually very often.
Please advise... maybe I am missing something...
Cheers

install the 1 min disconnect tweak thats on this forum.
if you only set emails to check automatically it will disconnect ok using the above tweak but if you have weather and/or twitter apps connecting to update for some reason it will not close the connection at all i have told htc but never heard back
The only real reason for disconnecting a data connection is if you want to prevent unwanted costs associated with data exchange.
If you're in a weak signal area you can save battery by switching the connection band to GSM rather than 3G, but in a strong signal, 3G is more power efficient.
An open, but quiescent data connection has little or no effect on battery life as it's simply using the network infrastructure; battery usage only occurs during actual data exchange. So, if you turn off all the auto-update features and set email polling to a longer interval you should be OK. Kind of defeats the purpose of the device though

From my experience all Symbian devices and the iPhone auto disconnect from the network once the data connection is no longer needed. They also reconnect in the blink of an eye. It kind of irritates me that Windows Mobile doesn't allow you at least the OPTION of doing so. It's particularly annoying if you're connected to a speaker and can't get 3g as there's a constant noise going off. I also think it can't be great for your balls having that connection constantly active! It's not HTC's fault though, just I think a result of Windows Mobile being inherently quite archaic...perhaps Windows have just overlooked it.
There's a great free app HERE to tweak the WinMo connections for individual apps. It's a must have for me.

This really isn't a problem, I've seen N95's that retain their connection at all time (and some that don't) and to be honest it just makes your handset a little quicker.
WMLongLife is the nuts. You need it.
Thanks for the link, I pay per minute on my connection (rather than data transferred) so an open connection is not good for my bank balance

Does the auto disconnect registry tweak affect push email?

I've set up my Gmail account using activesync (as item arrives) and all is well. However, I performed a few tests (sending emails to myself from other accounts) and noticed that the emails don't actually get to my phone immediately. They arrive immediately on the mail client on my PC but arrive about 10 minutes later on my HD2. Is this normal? If not, does the auto disconnect registry tweak I performed have anything to do with it. I'm guessing for mail to reach my phone as they arrive, some sort of constant connection is required with the google server. So does the auto disconnect tweak disrupt this connection? Also, is this constant connection drain the battery significantly quicker. I don't mind sacrificing a small amount of battery life for the push email feature, but if we're talking big drains then I might have to reconsider the sync frequencies.
OK, emails have started arriving exactly the same time on my phone as my PC mail client now. I'm guessing the auto disconnect doesn't affect anything then. It would be nice to know if its draining my battery quicker though when set to sync as item arrives.
Thanks in advance.
I was experimenting today and found the same issue. I'm not convinced that google sync works correctly just yet given that it is in beta.
I have gone back to non push mail.
WB
So hows the pushmail going on with you ?
Does it receive mail instantly ? does it drain battery faster in that way ?
Autosync with gmail seems to be unstable. I usually get mail on my phone instantly, but sometimes it can take up to 15 minutes. It would probably be better to set the phone to check mail every fifth minute or so, but what about the battery?
Does the auto disconnect affect weather, twitter or facebook updates btw?
Genuine 'Push' email can't work if autodisconnect is enabled (and actually working!)
The message that a new item is available is 'pushed' to the device from the server, which requires an open data connection.
If the data connection is closed, the 'new item available' flags won't be received until either the next scheduled poll, or the next push 'heartbeat' connection from the device which reopens the data connection.

Weather will be OK as it polls the server on a regular basis which reopens the data connection. I'm not sure about Twitter or FB- maybe having the programs open maintains the data connection?

Everything works fine for now (push wise) but as NeilM mentioned, I don't think its compatible with autodisconnect. In notifications, it shows that the connection (T-mobile internet in my case) is still active. And when I hold the call end button and 'Terminate Data Connection' the connection is re-established again immediately.
To disable this constant connection, I've set it to download every 30 mins peak, and 60 mins off peak -
I've never used push email before but I'm guessing it creates a constant connection between the phone and the server.

Thats correct- the phone sends a 'heartbeat' signal every so often (depending on the Exchange server settings, but usually every 15 minutes) just to refresh it's current IP address setting on the server. In practice, the IP address will rarely change as long as the data connection is maintained.
In this way, the server always knows where to send items as they arrive, and the action of sending resets the 'heartbeat' counter. Likewise any item sent from the phone resets the 'heartbeat'
The data involved in the heartbeat process is around 4MB per month, which is similar to the amount used in the handshaking when polling at 30 minute intervals.
If you have auto-disconnect active, then the server won't be able to send new items, so they will only get sent when a new connection is established by the heartbeat process, or when a connection is forced by a send/receive operation.

Well, on my device, the auto disconnect never worked.
I set the values
HKLM\Comm\ConnMgr\Planner\Settings\CacheTime=60
HKLM\Comm\ConnMgr\Planner\Settings\VPNCacheTime=60
and set SuspendResume=""
And all the auto-updates are off (weather, stocks, etc)
and still - once I start a connection (Mostly if I do it for waether update, but sometimes even from SkyFire), it stays on, until I turn it off from the settings.
(Is there anything I missed in the settings to enable auto disconnect ?)
