Stereo Bluetooth sound quality - how to improve it? - Touch HD General

Hi,
I recently got a set of Sony Ericsson HBH-IS800 Bluetooth headphones.
They're really slick and really convenient, but the sound quality I'm getting from the standard mp3 player just isn't great. There's quite a lot of noise, to the point that it is distracting.
I have used Sony in-ear phones for years, and IMO they're pretty good. These are significantly lower in quality, but I can't believe it's a hardware issue, Sony wouldn't have made a set of premium phones that much worse than all their wired equivalents.
I also know the player is capable of better quality, as I've used it with wired headphones.
Any clues on how to improve the BT audio performance? I can't believe this is as good as it can get.
Thanks in advance for any help - I'm sure you guys will come up with the goods

if you go HERE http://montecristoff.webs.com/hdtweak.htm and download the HD tweak....once youve installed the .cab onto ur phone and started it, there will be a choice to tweak some of the settings for your bluetooth...and im sure it will solve ur problem. the program has so many tweaks..its great, i use it myself.

Try increasing the BitPool in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Bluetooth\A2DP\Settings or by using software like sktools

You have to chnage the bitpool value in the registry:
HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Bluetooth/A2DP/Settings
Bitpool put 48 or 58 (the higher the better) but 58 might be too much for the IS800 and it might stutter.
UseJointStereo put 0

I have the same headset and problem. It sounds terrible for such a premium headset. My old Sony HBH-DS980 headset sounds so much better than the IS800. I really hope this isn't a hardware problem. I'm going to try to tweak to see if that helps.
Edit: I tried the tweak and it doesn't make a difference. If I cannot figure out how to make it sound better, I might end up returning it. It's not worth the price I paid for it.
Can you also let me know if the right side sounds louder than the left side on your headset? Mine seems to have this problem.

What do you mean by "tried" ? Have you edited "Bitpool" parameter to "High" ? Have you soft reseted ?
Increasing Bitpool does an audible difference. By default, it is too low, and stereo Bluetooth sound horrible (noise and high pitch distortion).
But, by increasing it, you may have skip or stutter.. I posted another thread with my troubles with Bitpool vs skip.

Is "SampleRate" the same as "Bitpool" I don't have a "Bitpool" setting under settings. I changed the samplerate to "58000" and jointstereo to "0".,did a softreset and it made no difference in sound quality/volume. I'm beginnning to think it's a hardware problem. I didn't have this problem with my previous bluetooth headset.

This is not good. Bitrate should be 44100 or 48000 only and has little effect on listen quality. You have to change "Bitpool". HD Tweak does have Bitpool parameter. Keep searching.

Found this thread, and tried the "turn off headset" fix. This worked.

No need to return it - it sounds great now, and definitely comparable quality with other phones.
Just need to figure out why it's dropping out so much - something about me or my clothes is interfering...
Cheers
Pete

if you have put 58 in the bitpool settings that's the reason of the droppings. Lower the value to 48 it will work properly

I'm using HDTweak, which just has "Very High", "High", "Medium" etc.
I've put it on medium and it still happens.
I actually think it's my body and clothing blocking the signal, which leads me to believe the BT transmitter in the HD is really weak, or the receiver in the phones is really weak...

I've got my Bitpool set to 48. I can walk around the flat listening to music with the HD in the living room and the sound stays just as good. This is with several walls in the way.
I noticed a substantial improvement when I went from 30 to 48. The sound had been thin and dull before, although not so bad I couldn't stand it. Now it's much fuller and there's a lot more bass too.
I haven't set JointStereo to 0. With mp3 encoding this is actually quite a useful setting, it just means that it doesn't bother encoding the bass separately for each channel. As bass fequencies aren't directional, i.e. our ears can't tell where they came from, it's a handy way to save some bandwidth. I'm assuming that JointStereo means the same here. Having said that I haven't tried changing the setting to see if the sound improves still further.
I'm using the Jabra BT3030 btw.

Good thread, I picked up an FM bluetooth transmitter for my car, sound quality is OK not FM quality for sure.
I was looking at my bitpool setting, it is set at 80 as well as the maxbitpool setting is 80 as well. Dropped it to 58 for both to try it out (will do so later).
Also changed jointstereo from 2 to 0. Frequency is at 48000, should I try 44100?
Also does anyone know how I can force a quick reconnect, when I go from ACC mode in my car to starting it up, it disconnects the bluetooth receiver from my phone then my phone starts playing music out of it's speaker...was wondering if there is a setting to reconnect within a second or two.

jointstereo is off.... sounds horrible (high pitched clipping)

I got the Motorolla BT headphones, paired them. With jointstereo = 1, i got mono sound, but there was no high pitched clipping. I disabled it, and set the quality to "exellent" via the hermes tweak program. I am getting stereo, but Im also getting very high pitched clipping sound, which makes any song virtually un-listenable due to the high pitched noise on the high notes. I also tried applying the reg values seen here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=284974 with no apparent result.
I am using a SonyEricsson stereo BT headset and the sound is reasonably good. The only thing I tweaked is that I set the jointstereo key to 0.
Try to find the right combination of volume in both devices, it might improve things... Clipping could be in your headphones because the signal from the Trinity is too high?
No that wont/didnt help. Its there even at the lowest sound setting. Its really noticable on about 70% of the songs, the other 30% are more or less ok. I tried removing higher frequences via an EQ in TCPMP, but the clipping is present on all frequencies.
The headset is totally useless for skype as well. Its so choppy, you cant understand anything.
Why is trash like this released?
I have the very same problem with iTech S35 headset...
No way to find a right combination of BitPool value an MaxBitPool value...
The problem is the MS BT stack. In my previous PDA Magician I installed Widcomm BT stack whit excellent results.
Now I'm waiting for the Widcomm BT stack development, hope to solve the problem.
Look at Hermes forum. Superdave is working on it...
Im thinking of getting the Jabra headphones, because people claimed that they have no high pitched noise.
Tested (I have loads of other A2DP devices and a high-quality A2DP heapdhone - the Plantronics Pulsar 590A) the Trinity in stereo mode instead of the default mono. Awful, in no way better than AKU2...
Trying to use the DS-970 from SE, but when setting the joint stereo to 0, the clipping comes, unless I use bitpool as low as 30, and the sound is then terrible! *argh* And with joint stereo, the highest bitpool I can use is 34, more then this and it starts to skip... *argh*
Tried almost everything, but I can't get it to stream out full stereo! *argh argh*

I also have 590A. After manually setting joint stereo to 0 i got stereo but not a very good quality sound plus occasionally skip mainly when using headset buttons.
Today I did a hard reset and installed fit4cat hermes tweaks program. I enabled stereo, set the sound to Excellent, did a soft reset and... the sound is great, no more skipping. Much better sound quality than with the joint stereo hack alone.
Still not as good as the mp3 player on my se p900 but getting closer.
update: 5-6 hours of continuous music listening until now and still no problem. hermes tweak program did a good job for me
Skipping problem is easily fixed, while the high pitched clipping is not.
Its horrible.
Your problem is related to the headset you're using or maybe software version. I have no pitching sound issues.

Did the same with my 590A + Trinity (that is, behind the curtains, 58 to BitPool). Unfortunately, the same clipping in highs...
May be a firmware difference between our 590A. What's yours? Mine is:
Date code: A06
SW: SB
Hmm, I tried the tweaker and got a terrible sounding treble. Very compressed and metallic. I then turned it off and soft reset, but the terrible sound is still there! What are the original settings?
Also got Plantronics Pulsar 590.
Date Code: K06-B
SW: SB
Well, I just got the Jabra headphones.... same problem. Im very disappointed with this A2DP crap....
To handle a decent quality audio stream, you only need 128kbps of bandwidth. Bluetooth is suppose to handle 10x that.
I have the Motorola HT820 headphones and the cingular 8525. This combination also produces the high pitched noise when jointstereo is off. I am tempted to try flashing the firmware using the method here would help: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=276406&highlight=ht820
Chances are, you got the latest version (D), so flashing wont do anything. The problem is with the MS BT stack.

I am very pleased with the sound and electronical part BUT my headset plastic broke on both sides. The silver parts where the black plastic enters (so you can adjust the headset on your head) are both broken now. I can't believe how poor this plastic is. I also noticed other cracks appearing around the metal pivots.
Did anybody else experienced these problems?

In the meantime, I've discovered some headsets (for example, ALL Plantronics headsets) are plain incomatible with the MS BT stack, while some other headsets (for example, the Nokia HS-12W) arent.
This is why some people report excellent sound quality and some awful.

Touch HD incredibly loud through headphones?

Anyone find it incredibly loud through headphones both system sounds and the touch flo music player? I have to have it all the way down to 1 bar in the system volume control.
Funnily enough coreplayer will play at reasonable volumes.
EDIT: maklik found a great solution. Volume reduced for headphones but still plays loud if not plugged in
maklik said:
u may edit the registry file:
Local_machine\software\HTC\VolumeOverlay\SavedHandSetVolume
Change DWORD to 0
plug in the headphone and adjust the system volume to 2-3%
u may find that if you once plug headphone into your mobile the volume will adjust to previous volume you saved, if you plug it out, the volume will restore to normal
question2,
the music too loud, you can edit the registry to fix it too
Local_machine\software\HTC\AudioManger_eng\Config\music_player_volumn
Change the DWORD to 10 or lower and soft-reset the mobile
the music will become lighter in the TouchFLO3D music player
sorry for poor eng, i come from HK ~ cheers

Usually phones are to quiet. that is an odd problem.
I'm having the same problem when listening streming radio station with my active Bose headphones. I have Media Player down to 5% volume but it is still quite loud. CorePlayer is ok, but that doesn't play the streaming format my station is using.
I'm finding it ok.
But you can use HD Tweak or Config Tool to lower the volume in the reg settings, that way it should be fine.

Have the same loud sound through the headphones even at lowest level. I prefer it after having a quietish Polaris. I think I remember seeing all the settings at 100 in the registry files so may be it is undoable?
Wow, are you kidding? I find it absolutely not loud at all!!... But I have a german (europe) version, so perhaps its the limitation... Does anyone know how to get this limitation away?? Please, I really searched a lot, but didn't find anything with my keywords and my fantasy is out now... So, I think there must be a cab or something like this, if anyone knows it, please post it or give me the link^^ greez, cad
@Cadenza: You should be able to remove the limitation using "HD Tweak"
Same problem here though: Sounds too loud for me ...
Thank you very much for your answer!!! Its true, I didn't try until now HD-tweak, only Advanced config and this doesn't have this option. So thanks a lot, I'll try this^^ haha, I want it loooud ok, now btt, I'm sorry that I post so offtopic, I really don't want to disturb you here but thanks a lot!!! Greez, cad^^
I gotta agree its very loud even at the lowest setting. I've just installed HD Tweak and see no way to lower my sound as the EU limitation is already active.
It's a funny problem to have, it is usually the opposite with anything you buy in the EU, maybe i can sue htc if i go deaf . If it makes any difference I use in ear earphones (otherwise you can't hear anything on London underground) could that be the cause?
Figure there mut be a registry setting somewhere to control this.
I also think it's way too loud, even though I've got a danish version, which should be limited... I dunno.
In wmp it's no problem though, cause it has it's own volume control.
HD tweak only allows to up the volume, not to lower it. Anybody got an idea?
LOL
Just tried mine and about blew my ears off! LOL
funny
Lol that were my thoughts exactly when I used my earphones for the first time! I only tested it on my own sennheisers though, not on the stock phones. Can anyone confirm that I can change this using that Tweak tool?
It's even worse through my UE Super.Fi 5 Pro as it approximately double the loudness compared to standard headphones. I hardly ever go above level 1 or 2.
I can't imagine what it would be like at level 15... Probably blow up my headphones.
Level 1 is not so bad during the day with lots of external noise but at night it's too loud!
no fix for this?
I thought s2p would help me get around this but I agree its still too loud... I like to sleep to music and this verges on painful on all but the very lowest setting... I've switched to a headset I use on my computer for voip calls that has a volumn control but I would much prefer a solution that allows me to use my Bose earbuds
using wmp solves the problem, as it has it's own volume control. But I want to use the htc player in tfl3d.

Sounds like you have a faulty Touch HD. I would backup your stuff and try a hard reset to see if this issue still persists.
No way I can turn to max volume. I would go deaf...
Hi Guys, I also have UE super.fi 5 pro's and find the HD stupidly loud! The only way I can listen to music before I go to sleep is to have the volume on the lowest setting and turn all the equaliser settings down to minimum! Any Help yet?!

has anyone tested the new file against the original ?
what's this actually? registry hack? a new file?
it's a replacement file that may make the volume louder ...
becareful the hack is actually trying to increase the gain which may distort the audio quality. It can be quite obvious (in terms of loudness at the expense of the quality) but it will magnify the audio quality problem when you use the earphone..

There is absolutely no distortion on my wife's X1, neither on the device nor the standard headset. I also bought her a Sony-Ericsson Bluetooth Stereo Headset over the weekend, and it works like a dream! We also tried a pair of other headsets we have at home, and all work beautifully.
Headphones definitely is louder, too loud for me on full volume, and that's from years of deafness due to bassplaying ;P
Ringvolume seems to be the same.
strange that you need the hack to increase the volume for headset.
I had to lower down the volume to 20% if I'm using media player with my ear phone, considering that I'm abit of tone-deaf, this is extremely loud

Htc hd2 sound quality

When I talk on this phone, the sound is very poor... Although not too loud (like other complaints) but the sound crackles at high frequencies... The speakerphone is even worse...
Is anyone aware of some tweaks to improve communication sound on this phone?
Can AudioBooster be set up to work with the phone's sound not only the music player? Any other options ???
Thank you in advance.

I think the high volume on this phone is artificially boosted over what it's meant to be, i.e. HTC have modified the audiopara (or something like that) in the Windows folder to try and boost the speakers sound over what it's meant to be.
(Something that ROM coookers figured out on the Diamond I think).
I think, maybe someone can reduce those values back to normal? The speaker will be a little quieter, but it won't crackle or distort as much.

Which radio do you recommend? I have Leo_RADIO_2.07.50.27_2 and a terrible sound while on the phone.
Sound is to loud, impossible to lower volume enough. Much distortion even at lowest volume (which still is to loud). Bad sound in cable handsfree and BT handsfree.
Soundquality while playing music on the other hand is perfect in speaker, handsfree and BT handsfree.
Suggestions?
Since sound is often a pretty subjective matter, so I'd like to interject that the phone network only transmits from around 300 Hz to 3,000 Hz. Therefore the sound of a voice over your phone will never sound as clear and nice as it should, let alone like the 192 kbps-MP3-file you are playing
If it's worse compared to other phones however it's, as stated above, likely a problem with the radio. I use the 2.08.50.08_2 from [REF]The HTC HD2 Radio ROM Thread and have a quite decent quality.
I agree totally - if it sounds good or bad is individually. But, the sound quality in my HD2 is far worse than in my 5 years old SonyEricsson, and when I borrowed a Nokia the other day I was surprised how good (clear, crisp, distorsion free) a cell phone can sound.
I have a lot of distorsion and all too loud sound. Often I have to hold my phone 20 cm away from my ear just to avoid getting half deaf..
Thanks for the tip, I'll try the 2.08.50.08_2 Radio and hope for a better sound
you can try this hotfix...worked very well @my hd2
i got this from another forum.
little info: some users said that the soundlevel is now always set up to 100%...but try it on your own!

Thanks, trying it now, will report back after tomorrow's hardcore testing at work..
Return it if you can...
I had Nokia E71 before and it's speaker is fo another level better than HD2... BUT, question is: when I'm gonna use speakerphone on my HD2? ... almost never
Seems better, but a little to subjective at the moment. Will keep trying and report back!
Definitely better after the patch. Quite good actually. I have not seen any side effects yet, only clear sound, and better volume.
Thanks for the hotfix!
Will try it on my colleague's phone also now.
sound quality
I used the hotfix as well but it appears to have made no difference whatsoever to the quality of sound during calls , so my phone is going back to htc again and if it returns with the same issues i will ask for a replacement as due to the ammoun of posts on here this is a major flaw in the phone and a highly irritating one too , i love this phone but the audio quality during calls is appalling in comparison to all my previous phones .
After a couple more days of testing I found out that the patch gave no effect at all. BUT: I found out another thing: Even though the system volume is at lowest according to the meter, if you increase, you actually lower the volume. So, if you during a call first increase and then decrease the volume, it gets acceptable. Still to loud though.
So, it seems like what HTC really should do is to get the dialer use the sound mixer properly. Today it is obviously oversteering which creates distorsion.
this is a war we won't win

I've bought my HD2 back in Dec the 11th and since then I've been in contact with HTC about fixing this problem. They've given me a debug tool to run on my device, sent the logs twice and so far they've done nothing about it. I've given up. What I do for outgoing calls, while it rings I turn the volume all the way up and then all the way down before the other party answers. doing this you get a decent sound. Can't do much about the incoming calls,
As far as flashing different radios and roms... I've flashed about 30time already. tried all the possible radio/rom combinations but with only slight different results. Nothing to brag about!
the fix I attached helps a little bit!
If anybody finds and cure let us all know! please!!!!!

Note 4 - Increase Max Volume for headphones?

Hi,
Just wondering if anyone has been able to adjust the default max volume level for the Note 4, mine just needs to go up a couple of notches louder, I know this has been done on the Note 3 by adjusting some values in the mixerpaths.xml file
I've not rooted my note 4 yet, however if someone knows a confirmed working method then I may just do that.
Thanks in Advance
Louder? Damn, I can't go near max loudness without going deaf!
Have you tried adjusting the Adapt sound? That increased the loudness/clarity of my bluetooth headset quite a bit.

Yeah, always love my music loud in my ears, not mindblowing loud..... but I like it loud, think I'm going deaf anyway.
Not tried adjusting the adapt sound, didn't know that would impact volume level.
I'll give it a go, my earphones are not bluetooth just wired so it may or may not work

Yeah, try the adapt - it made a huge difference (both for wired and bluetooth). I'm sure there are hacks out there, but I tend to start with stock and then move to hacks when that fails.
Good luck.
There are a couple threads with hacks. Pretty sure one of them are in the tmobile theead.
