I recently switched to the Sidekick pay as you go plan on t-mobile. Pay as you go sim cards work fine in most t-mobile phones. It works fine in my t-mobile dash which is upgraded to wm 6.1 (kavanna downloaded from the Excalibur forum here). My text messages work fine as unlimited but I'm supposed to get unlimited internet as well. I have the edge network icon on my top bar yet i can't connect to the internet. In my comm manager it won't let me select the 4th (email) or 5th(data connection) icons. T-mobile said this was because sidekicks are very specific and the plan is designed for sidekicks, but my friend had already done this on his dash and his interent worked (then upgraded to a g1). Anyone have any ideas?

Well, I don't have any experience with the sidekick or the pay as you go plan as I'm from Spain, but if internet in the sidekick works as in any regular phone, then you need to know the APN and username/password you should use to access the GPRS/EDGE/3G data network.
If you already do, and the dash is configured, then the only reason I can think of it wouldn't work is because of the IMEI, as providers know the device type based on the TAC (Type Allocation Code) and they can block internet access if the connected device doesn't comply with the allowed device.
Well I assumed it was the upgraded wm 6.1 so I downgraded to the official tmobile wm 6.0 but data connection still wasn't allowed in my comm manager. I've uploaded a screenshot of my comm manager so it's easier to see what the problem is:

(it won't even let me select 4 or 5 the email and data connection)
I attempted to connect to the internet on a friend's sidekick with my SIM card and it asked for the username/pin (which means my plan does allow me to connect to the internet) so I'm going to have to assume it is the IMEI, I don't understand what else it could be. Thanks for you help. If anyone else might know why please post.

Hi All
I wonder if any of you geniuses can help me with this query
I am using an HTC Touch Diamond with a NON DATA Enabled sim card, this is my personal sim card and account. I also have a Blackberry Pearl 8120 (I hope that isnt a swear word in these forums), anyway this is my work phone and I have an unlimited email & Internet DATA package on this sim card.
I want to know if I can SOMEHOW connect my Touch Diamond to the internet through the Blackberry using bluetooth? I am certain this must be possible, anyone got any ideas.
Also on a slightly different thread, My Touch diamond is all in French as I am currently living in Morocco but I would love to change the windows system language to English, is there a way to do this in settings on the device or do I need to flash the device with an ENGLISH ROM?? Tips on how to do this would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks
Check and see if blackberry has an application like wm wifi router (windows mobile).
I have an ATT Tilt with unlimited data. I use the tilt, with WM Wifi Router as a wireless access point. I then connect all kinds of stuff to it, like my ipod touch, my laptop, other wifi phones.
It might be hard finding an application like this for Blackberrys.
if it were me, i would take the sim card out of the blackberry and put it in the diamond.. problem solved.
however if that solution does not work for you then the above advice is the best you'll get
How about ditch the blackberry and get a dual sim card holder and cut up your sim cards and put both in the holder then put it in your diamond problem solved and use the diamond for work and personal. So kill 2 birds with 1 stone. You can carry 1 phone around, but have the best of both worlds.

I think dual sim is what he meant.

I think he just meant: just swapping the sims, then he could just use the data plan on the diamond

......Oh.........lol
I recently bought my HTC Touch HD and I was wondering what this greyed out GPRS logo means:

"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
I am not sure if it affects the connection, but I think I can still call and be called, but not receive text messages. Although I haven't really tested that yet. I already tried searching the manual, but it doesn't mention anything about it.
I have installed the following software and updates on the phone
- Official HTC ROM upgrade
- Microsoft .NET CF 3.5
- TomTom Navigator
- HD Tweak
- TF3D Theme Maker 3.3
- Sprite Backup
- Pocket Sudoku (game)
- I244 Atomic Cannon (game)
I am not using internet on my phone yet.
Can somebody explains what this greyed out logo actually means and does to my phone?
Thanks in advance.
i had this recently but it was because i hadn't paid my bill!
think it means you have no internet access due to it not being allowed.
i thought it was a taskbar glitch
i had it for the first time the other day but only when i left coreplayer
i assumed the screen was having trouble coming back frm the display correctly
Its because your internet has been disabled.
You prob wont have mms access either.

I'm with PiLoT on this. I had this about a year ago and it wasn't just with this symbol, also for HSPDA. Phone connected fine to internet but symbol was still greyed out. It was a glitch which sometimes went away with a soft reset. I'm not 100% sure how I eventually fixed it, possibly a combination of changing taskbar/rom etc
i didnt need to soft reset though i just waited a few seconds and it happened
I don't think it's a glitch, I read somewhere that it's a different type of connection, may have been in the Orange guide which came with the phone... I'll try and have a look around for it and let you know
I get the greyed out logo when I disable GPRS Auto Attach using Advanced Config (in Data Connections section). The greyed out logo can be G, or H depending on the coverage at my location. Re-enabling GPRS Auto Attach sets the icon back to normal.
The greyed out logo just means that it cannot establish a data connection with the tower that you are currently registered with.
This will be for one of two reasons;
1) you've turned off your data connection (as the user above has)
2) there is a temporary problem with the network/tower
Can anyone post the Hero's internet sharing USB drivers for XP? Or where to find it? I need it. Please....
After it has been installed, the OS device manager name will be "HTC remote NDIS based device" like this.....

The hero does not support internet sharing. netiher does the magic or the G1.
Are you thinking of Windows mobile devices??
what is this option for?
settings--wireless controls -- mobile network sharing (at the bottom)
To enable mobile network sharing, please plug in the cable?

You just need to download and install the HTC Sync from this page:
http://www.htc.com/hero/m/en/downloads/htcsync.html
the last 2 lines of the install instructions states:
(During the installation, a modem driver software for your phone will also be installed. It allows you to share your phone’s Internet connection to your computer when you do not have Internet access on your computer.)
this file is also on the sd card!
Well bugger me backwards, I stand corrected!
Has anyone actually got it to work though?

just tried it and it actually seems to work!
Once htc sync was installed from http://www.htc.com/hero/m/en/index.html it installed the network adapter and all seemed well apart from no traffic.
disabled sharing and started it again and all started going flawlessly.
maybe a little slow, but enough in a pinch.
Does anyone know if this will flag up on the operators system as tethering?
With 3gb allowance per month I can't use that all on mobile browsing!
It depends on the network.
I currently am using it on a three mobile sim with the 5 pounds a month 'unlimited' mobile browsing add on.
works fine and i have been using that sim in a USB modem for the last three months, so even if they can, it depends on whether the network actually cares or not!
I know that my t-mobile sim with W&W+ allows me to do it no problems as well, although i don't think you're allowed to on the standard w&w plans. Don't know about their new 'unlimited' flext plans.
Hey guys,
I have been looking several days for an option to toggle 3g <-> 2g but it simply isn't there where it supposed to be.
After discovering this article I'm wondering why this feature is missing in all wp7 samsung devices.
I really miss this option because I get at home barely 1 bar on 3g and thats not very good for the battery.
I thought that OEMs aren't allowed to customize the os on this level but why is this option not visible ?
Regards
I always thought that this option has been disabled by my provider because "3" doesn't have 2G at all. All GSM data is transferred via Roaming with A1 mobilkom.
Don't know, I've realised that my Omnia7 doesn't have this option but I don't miss it though.
worth a ponder

My boyfriend's Trophy has the 3g toggle located in settings. He's using vodafone. My omnia however is missing the feature. HTC vs samsung or carrier difference?
According to Orange it is missing on all Omnia 7s as it's missing from the Samsung software.
Thanks for your answers but nevertheless I'd like to hear why samsung did exclude this feature on their wp7 phones because I couldn't barely find any information about it on the internet.
It's incomprehensible and there we see that samsung failed once again with "their" software. Toggle 2g is an option that I really won't miss specially in areas where I have bad signal. I'm going to contact samsung to see what they say about it.
Regards

Would be interesting to know, but don't get your hopes high...I cannot remember any time Samsung answered a support question for me
My Omnia 7 has this setting. I have a 16 GB device from T-Mobile Germany running on o2.
My Omnia 7 also has this setting (Optus stock [unlocked] 8GB version).
Settings > Mobile Network
What I LOVE about these settings is that whenever my phone tries to access the internet and 3GB/Data is turned OFF, it won't force it on. Infact, unless you have Wi-Fi turned on, it will just say it's unable to access a data connection.
More than I can say for Windows Mobile, which always turned it on no matter what you told it to do.

Thanks, guys
So it's not Samsung's idea but, more likely, our provider's idea to cut this setting.
I have a Samsung Captivate. Its on AT&T's $50 Unlimited Talk, Text and Web plan, however, the web part is disabled. I have to buy a separate Data Plan to make the internet work.
I was just wondering if there are any free mobile networks out there? Perhaps setting a new APN that lets me on the net without paying for it, how ever slow it may be. I'm not talking about WiFi either. I mean an internet that can used while outside of a WiFi hotspot.
I've heard of such things, but can't find any information about it.
I don't think such a thing exists, cuz whatever APN/VPN/... you're setting up, it still has to go through whatever your provider is..

Are you serious? You think a service provider is going to let you eat their bandwidth for nothing? If that were the case, why would ANYONE pay for data? Keep dreaming big, my friend.

In order to use the unlimited featurephone data on the $50 prepaid plan with a smartphone, you need to use an Android device AT&T doesn't recognize. That means an unbranded device with AT&T's 3G frequencies.
