I'm looking for a good feed reader application that supports wvga and allows me to view pictures (webcomics) and flash content (if possible, optional) inside the flash player. The RSS reader that is installed shows only text. Anyone who can point me in the right direction?
try spb online or spb insight
Newsbreak, pRSSReader, Egress - all these can download pictures as well, none support flash I think
I use google reader iphone version on iris browser. works like a charm though it doesn't support flash.
maybe combining reader + opera + flashlite should work...
I use BeyondPod for my feeds and podcasts. Don't know if it can do flash though.
Thanks for the all the replies people. Here's some results:
SPB Insight: First of all, it's paid, I prefer not to pay for such a trivial app. Second, it didn't look the way I like my feedreader to look.
Newsbreak: Won't install on X1, keeps returning an "installation unsuccesful" message.
Egress: Won't install on X1, keeps returning an "installation unsuccesful" message.
pRSSReader: Looks like everything I want, but refuses to show pictures - it's the same as the stock RSS reader.
Google Reader: I've never in my life seen such an unintuitive and annoying feed reader. Also, it's online, I want to be able to use it offline as well.
Beyondpod: Review coming soon, can't DL it from opera mobile, the website doesn't correctly load and I don't have access to a PC atm.
does anyone of the mentioned apps have the ability to show feeds on the Today screen?

Newsbreak does indeed work on the x1... was recommended to me by a friend and I have been using it all day... nice little app and does what it says on the tin (plus a bit more).... would recommend this one... would also like to try egress too as have heard its pretty good... btw Newsbreak utilises the whole screen... and it has a today screen plugin which is pretty good... and handy...
Does anyone know how often SPB Insight updates/download the feeds?
Or do I have to do it manually?
I use this app:
http://www.mediafire.com/?ooijamaxocg
It's Java but has a load of channels to choose from.

After reading on SPB forums, I found out that it doesn't auto-update.
Does anyone know of another app with both a today screen plug-in and auto-updates?
RSS Hub will work with Flash (as long as FlashLight 3.1 is installed). Look hard enough and you can find a cab for that around here.
How about pRSS Reader??

Newsbreak... you can set it to update when you are connected to pc, connected (wireless for eg) and a couple of others as well as never... and it shows on today...
pRSS Reader also shows on Today, just checked.
Thanks guys. Ive just tried 3 different RSS readers and heres what I thought:
* SPB Insight: Looks good, especially with thumbnails on the Today-screen.
- Doesn't have auto-update
* Newsbreak: Works great and has auto-update.
- Doesn't appeal me visually / No thumbnails on today-screen.
* pRSS reader: Works great, has auto-update and shows more info than Newsbreak on the today screen.
- No thumbnails either.
So it came down to either have thumbnails or auto-update, and I went with pRSS reader

Yes. Go to the website you want the feed from, and look at their RSS address (hold the mouse over their RSS-icon).
For example http://icanhascheezburger.com/ has http://feeds.feedburner.com/icanhascheezburger

Never really bothered with RSS untill I bought my missus a new phone this christmas and it had RSS built into it and I find it quite good.

Try:
a. NewsReader ($$)
b. Egress ($$ probably)
c. SPB Insight ($$)
d. pRSSReader (Freeware)
e. PocketRSS (Freeware?)
f. Hubdog (?? donno much about this one)
I personally use pRSSReader (due to it's decent today screen plugin, scrolls new items like a ticker on the today screen) but thinking about trying out PocketRSS ..

pRSSReader get my vote. I like the today plugin and it's still free.
Hi,
I tried pRSSReader, too. Nice program but I had a little problem on my VPA compact III:
The Windows Mobile bootscreen disappeared after the installation of pRSSReader. Now the screens turns to white until the Today screen is loaded. Does anyone else have this problem?
Mark.
Update: Sorry, it is a know issue:
Known Issues
When migrating from 1.2.0 version of pRSSreader, you have uninstall the previous one. This is because of the name change in the instalation file. This change has to be made to allow pRSSreader install on Asian (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) versions of Pocket PC.
On some devices, pRSSreader may cause that the boot screen of a device will be completely white. It is a problem of pRSSreader and will be fixed in 1.3.3.
pRSSReader looks pretty good so far, cheers peeps.
Shame about the white boot screen bug, but its a minor issue. Will be sorted on next release.

It might be the best .. I think it was voted the winner on 2006 PocketPCMag awards too .... but the biggest problem is the today screen plugin .. I could see how that might be a problem for those who want to read news on their Today screen. I don't. I'm very happy with the ways NewsBreak's Today plug-in only shows the number of new items and them I launch NewsBreak reader right from there. I'm very carefully select what's on my Today screen - most of it is taken by SPB Diary.
http://modernnomads.info/wiki/index.php?page=RSS+readers
NewsCopier
MaximumSoft NewsCopier is a freeware RSS reader. Features include:
* hiding of read articles,
* Cleartype support,
* allows feeds to be stored on your memory card,
* support for a wide variety of RSS-feed formats: RSS 1.0 (including RSS 0.9, 0.91, 0.92), RSS 2.0 and Atom
* Automatic (periodic) updates of feeds
The basic user-interface is quite similar to Illium's NewsBreak, but it lacks advanced features like alerting on keywords and loggin into protected feeds.
Meh. I prefer Google Reader Mobile. You can use the full UI on a computer and manage feeds from there. On the mobile it is just a stripped down version of your feeds.

Egress has a today plugin with ticker as well
I also like pRSSreader, which I've been using for a few weeks (and I tried several before settling on this one).
But there is one annoying feature. It's a pain in the ass to add new feeds. You can't just add the URL of the actual blog, you have to add the URL of the feed - which is easier said than done in some cases. Unless I'm missing something?
An alternative to any Pocket PC reader is simply to use PIE and access Bloglines (www.bloglines.com) which renders beautifully on a Vario II and includes all of the your usual Bloglines feeds.
how do I install prssr.....everytime I download the zip cab the installation fails...my 8525 trys to open the zip cab file with the proprietary htc zip program preinstalled on the machine.
I use pRSSreader... it's great, i love the cycling stories that allows u to tap it to go right to that story instead of sifting through all of them.
I'm a BIG RSS guy. I love my RSS over 400 Feeds. It's my only way to get information since i'm either always working or traveling.
I've used the following and here is my opinion
SPB Insight:
Love this one. Only 2 problems. (1) no video support (yet, i was reading that next version should have it) (2) can get slow sometimes. the version fixed a lot of this but i guess they never accounted for 400 RSS Feeds.
The new v2 today plugin is nice and with the recent update there are several options. you can also click http links in the feeds (NICE FEATURE)
pRSS:
This one for being free is nice but not my favorite by far. I have to say the ticker is nice but limited options. I also think the setup of adding and removing feeds it not the best in the world but it allows you to read and it is pretty quick if you are not reading from a SD card
Hubdog:
THis one has many things i love and hate. I love the fact you can do videos, pictures, links, etc. however that all comes with a price. Hubdog is SLOW, and i mean SLOW. it crashes like you would believe it. And one time in on of the earlier version it caused my SD to stop being see by the OS. (a soft reset fixed that) I think the best thing i love about hubdog that i wish others would do if that you can go to hubdog.com and setup your RSS feeds there and then when you login to your hubdog account form you mobile all of you RSS feeds are all setup. This is not my favorite RSS Reader but of the free ones i did like this one the best, despite the crashes.
Newsbreak is my next RSS Reader to hit up. I downloaded the trial and i am excited to see what it can do for me. Important things for me is the UI, plays video/audio for podcast and has a today plugin.
I hope this helps and i'll update when i play with Newsbreak.
Spb Insight also has a Today Screen plug-in with scrolling headlines (and photos) also has a few other features, like some sites you can choose to download full text, photos and all. For myself though, I found the Today screen text and photo crawl to be annoying.
Newsbreak, which I'm testing now also does nicely with playing audio blogs.
IMO PocketRSS is superior, and FREE!!

and I find it superior to pRSSreader in all respects including today applet....

Thanks
I use SPB Insight 1.5.1, hoping they release version 2.0.0 soon. pRSS was good until it stopped working (doesn't load). I have to uninstall it, clear everything about it from the registry, then reinstall.
hi guys!
what's the best feeds reader?
I prefer browser-based Google Reader. Otherwise I would recommend Spb Insight (it downloads whole articles instead of just a perex).
If you need something that can work offline, I recommend pRssReader, its development ceased but it has caching, google reader sync and everything. But I use iphone web version of google reader from opera.
best rss reader
Having worked with several rss readers such as p rss reader , google reader , newsgate , yomumedia , prpnews , sbp insight ....... and others...... , I can say with confident that the original pre installed rss reader on htc touch hd (rss hub) is the best. It has the most strongest search function among all others and infact very far ahead of them.
-google reader is a very good in mobile format ,but it doesn't update automaticly ! and this is a great shame for any rss reader .also there is no search function.
-others also havnot any viable search ,so you have to be content with some limited news channels.
-p rss reader recently is blocked by some sort of google code bars ,so it's almost out of use !
-smart rss reader is a java-jar application and very slow .
-Ova rss reader is a java app. too ,with limited channels and tiny font (a universal problem with java on mobiles ! ).
So .....Thanks htc folks for their great job .s
Have a good time !
I like Egress
pRSS reader blew up on me and wouldn't update. I tried reinstalling, etc. I couldn't identify the problem, nor did I feel enclined to take the time to figure it out. So I started trying some others. Egress was the least expensive but still provided professional results and low mem usage. It's readable offline and allows external card storage.
With stuff like this, though, a lot of your choice depends on preference. The most popular ones seem to be Pocket Insight (pricey as compared to Egress), and Google Reader (online/no auto-update).
For me personally, I use and love NewsBreak. It is a pay program but it is worth it.

I had to switch to the Ozone from the Alltel Palm Treo Pro in order to make a change to my rate plan. Much faster phone than the Treo Pro. There are a few setbacks.
Let's see, what do I have installed?
Microsoft's Bing App
Facebook App

Thinking about Skyfire or Opera Mini
CHome Configuration (can't edit new panels... bummer)
I got my yahoo, gmail, & hotmail accounts synced with no problems.
I'd like to find a new alarm clock. Being able to create new documents would be sweet too.
Good phone. WinMo 6.5 could make it better.

My problem is when I try to modify NRG's Home Screen to add the HTC Panels, they simply don't show up. Chome Config shows them as active, just not there. I'm assuming we need an updated version to work with updated HTC Panels on the Ozone.

RSS Reader Widget
For those using WM 6.5 (or above) I am developing an RSS Reader Widget. Anyone willing to test it out and give me feedback would be appreciated.
Note : this is a widget not a CAB, so you have to do this to get the widget installed :
In order to get your widget to install by clicking on it, you need to create this association by modifying the registry on the device to include the following values:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\riapp] "EditFlags"=dword:00010000
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\riapp\Shell\Open\Command] @="wmwidgetinstaller.exe %1"

What is RSS Hub? Is it the same as NewsBreak? RSS Hub is a version of NewsBreak that has been customized per HTC's specifications for inclusion on their Windows Mobile devices.
There are some minor differences between the interface for NewsBreak and the interface for RSS Hub but the overall functionality is exactly the same.
