iPlayer playback distortion. - Touch HD General

Now that the BBC have seen fit to support the HD, I've changed the user-agent back to default but I still get a very distorted and Pixellated playback through both the live feed and Catch Up. (As I did previously with the workaround)
I thought I'd cured it by setting the maximum media buffer (25 secs) in options but it is still the same.
This is through WiFi as I am with O2 and of course that's not (hopefull) yet supported.
I don't have any problems with the video playback of any other video files.
Anybody help please.

Video playback problems

I have been experimenting with video playback on the Tytyn, but am becoming disillusioned with the results!
I use PocketDivX Encoder 0.3.60, to convert using 2 pass xvid and b frames, and TCPMP, and the results were truly stunning on my old Kjam.
Whatever I try with the new Tytyn, does not even come close to the performance I was getting on my old device.
Does any one have any suggestions or recommend a successful encoding method that actually works on the Tytyn. I would like to hear from anyone who has managed to get a playback quality the same as the Kjam/Wizard i.e smooth video without loss of lipsync or jerky framerate.
Thanks
search for TYTN + TCPMP on this forum... this has been discussed A LOT.

Hi there & welcome to our videoplayback problem:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=354421#354421
It's not all bad, but I can't find any workaround for the meantime. Look out for The CorePlayer (The new TCPMP), hopefully when released, it will address these issues we have discovered. Meantime I am using 'ImToo_DVD 2 Ipod Converter' , which converts to high quality Mp4 format and plays back just fine for now and is definately on par with Divx/Xvid AVI encoding at 768kbps! It also converts a whole film in practically 20 mins plus compared to PocketDivx_Encoder or DVDx.
I have tried the Im too to ipod converter, and have had some very pleasing results.
Could you possibly let me know what settings you have checked/unchecked in TCPMP, for optimum playback of the resulting mp4 files?
Thank you very much, your help and advice is greatly appreciated.
Best regards
Pergolesi
yeah I had a good experience converting to mpeg4 except the filesize was much larger (almost twice the size as divx) is this the norm cause of divx compression?
MPEG4 Videos in TCPMP
Personally, I use the following settings for ImTOO DVD to iPod Converter:
Video Bit rate:512 or 768 (difference is negligable but size is better @ 512kbps)
Audio Bit Rate:64
Sample rate:22050
Channels:2
Video Size:320x240
Profile: iPod MPEG-4 Movie (*.mp4)
Zoom:Full (keep aspect ratio)
Split:Infinite (though it's nice to have a DVD encoded in the chapters it came in - TCPMP will play them in the correct order if saved as 'playlist')
**Do Check the Audio settings (under the Menu bar) as your DVD will probably have options for differnt Audio i.e English.
I know more settings are available, but this is a short-term fix for me (with acceptable results for me) until the new 'CorePlayer' is released.
In TCPMP the settings really don't make much of a difference either, but just make sure you have 'Video' set to 'Rawframebuffer' mode. I have found that all AVI and MP4 playback without major gripes, but the MP4 gets better results whilst benchmarking using 'ATI decoder'. Fat load of good that does you when it comes to playback though (back to rawframebuffer mode).
P.S. for smaller filesizes, just reduce the video bit rate like you would in AVI encoding.
MPEG4 Videos in TCPMP
Great info, I'm sure others will find this just as helpful as I have.
Thanks again.

In TCMP what is the best setting, GDI or RAWFRAMEBUFFER?
Im asking this because on my tytn i can use both of them without problems.

I use Rawframeuffer mode, but GDI will do also. Though benchmarking yields better results in Rawframebuffer mode for me.
I'm using TCPMP. I set ATI IMAGEON Decoder on.
When it start, the screen is not viewable.
But I press the action button, when the movie plays it is normal.
When I paused and resume, video play with low frame rate.
I goto Option, Speed, Select 100%, it's normal.

I have the same problem with Windows Media play WMV's, the longer i watch the vid the more out of sync it seems to gets, normally the audio comes after the video, and the time just keeps increasing. then when i press pause. the video stops instantly and the audio carries on until it catches up.
However, if i plug the advantage in to the power surpply it doesn't seem to be as bad. It makes me think that it is due to the CPU speed, mentioned in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=305214
But if anyone has any ideas about how to keep it in sync it would be appricated.
ive tried it with the power cable plugged in. still losing sync. just stopping and starting it corrects sync problem. i have now tried a number of rips. all converted in different formats. resolutions and bit rates still lose sync. anybody got any ideas
same problem here..anybody who knows how to solve this problem?

which version of TCPMP are you using?
doesnt matter which i use, even with coreplayer it goes out of sync
this problem i did not have with mda pro
im affraid this is all to do with the ati chipset and tcpmp, until a fix is found this is going to happen. the best i can get is about 4 minutes. and ive tried most variations in frame size, rate, and bit rate, even files which play at 120% still lose sync.
i went back to watching movies on my psp partly because of this and also as the picture quality is much better as well!
Strange. I use TCPMP to watch all the films and TV shows I download from torrents, and they all play fine. I've never had any problems with the sound going out of sync.
I also never have any out of sync problem. This device rocks for video playback, by my standard. I do lots of youtube and downloaded movies, and the picture is really really good with TCPMP.
I converted a dvd movie to avi 1400MB(high settings) and with this video i have no out of sync.Very strange is with 700mb divx xvid movies its going out of sync.
I've the sync problem too in coreplayer and tcpmp.

is it not possible to get codecs to add to pocket media player so it will play divx etc? As far as i know media player supports the graphics chip so performance should be better

if it was possible , someone would have done it woudnt they?
this problem is one of the major sucky things about this device
Posting to an old post, I know, but as I'm also having the audio/video sync problems, I thought I'd ask everybody that DOESN'T have the problem if they'd be so kind as to specify their EXACT settings.
In my case I'm using Core player.
Under Video I'm using ATI Imageon, Video quality = High, Smooth zoom = on, Dither = ticked and Accelaration = unticked (I have problems with it ticked)
Under Advanced I've even ticked Override AVI timing based on Audio, but no difference. I've also changed the A/V offset to -0.45 seconds, as per another post relating to this issue, with no result.
Under buffering my normal buffer size is 4192, set to preload at 70% underrun, with preload for audio set at 65 KB.
I've ticked Microdrive mode. with the buffer size being 16000 KB and the starting point being 1472 KB

Artifacts appearing when video is played.

When I play mp4 videos, I see strange artifacts appearing randomly on the screen using WMP or Media panel. They are horizontal and they look like short white dashes. It happens when I watch youtube videos too and it tends to appears more on higher resolution videos.
I really hope someone can shed some light on the issue. Thank you all just for any comments because this is really bugging me and seems to suggest faulty hardware.
Got this test video from somewhere.

No one else encountered this problem?
This device just doesn't handle video very well at all, at least thats my experience. Especially video with higher bitrates. And yes I sometimes see artifacts, mostly "residue" of clips I've played just before like stuck frames at the borders of the video.
I have the edge problems too
But the artifacts/streaks of tiny short lines are appearing randomly in the screen area, not the edges. I am worried about having faulty hardware. I don't know how pda hardware function, but I have several desktop GPUs dying on me before.
Please guys, I really need more insight into this matter because if it is a hardware problem, I will be going down to the service centre soon.
Please just play a mp4 video and report your observations. I know it means nothing but I will be very grateful.
Have you tried running the vids through CorePlayer?
Have you ensured that the files aren't too big (res or framerate)?
Instead of posting vague information like "do you get artifacts" how about some real info about the files you are using.

I specified I get the problems with mp4 files on WMP and Media Xperiance Panel. The files are DVDs encoded with the tool from "[APP][REF]Full HD (800x480) video playback with acceleration" with the recommended settings(which I believe wouldn't be too high). Also, they lag horrendously with CorePlayer so I used WMP or MXP where they played smoothly EXCEPT with white - - - (dashes) appearing consistently but randomly. It occurs on all the videos I encoded this way when played on MXP or WMP.
In case you want some more details, one of the files played have the following details viewed with CorePlayer's Media Properties menu,
Video: AVC aka H.264
Video Size: 640 x 480
Frame Rate: 29.970
File Size: 20370KB
I thought I would not need to post much details because I believed people here would have at least tried playing videos close to the native resolution of X1's screen.
It seems the problem is only with my device and no one else here is having any problem I am having so I will head down to the service centre.

anybody? no one willing to help test?
I find no problems -am on stock UK Vodafone X1i and encode DVD's onto the SD card regularly (watch on train commute)
No problems with original FW and none since updating to RA2 via SEUS
Have just tried your posted "test" mp4 (crysiswarhead?) and definitely no white --- artefacts at all
It plays OK but is a bit laggy (only just noticeable)
The res is 800x480 which may have something to do with it (bit too high) ... I have been using 480x272 which works great and looks awsome (I use a commercial DVDripper -Aimersoft)
Good luck at the service centre!!!
Thanks for the reply. Unfortunate for me though, I always hate service centres. =(
More input please. =(
Same problem here.
Don't think it's a hardware thingy.. it's just not the ideal encoding for this little machine
I'm already happy I can play a normal mp4 / xvid / 'specially' encoded file on it.
Unless it's all over your image I do not think there is any succes in returning the phone.
they'll tell you it's not the 100% right codec format for the phone and will kick you out.
at least.. that's my thinking
Thanks mate for the response. I love this device and can live with this flaw, but I don't like the idea of having a defective hardware on the *inside*.
I can live with the problems I'm already having, scratch keyboard, wobbly slider, black paint dropping off but the fact that my x1 is havinga defective processing chip inside scares me so much.
Heading down to the service centre now...
There are videos that I encoded that play SMOOTHLY but will white flickers popping out all over. The service centre I know have a demo set, I will try playing videos on thatt and compare and hopefully convince those guys.

Video playback woe. Help

Ok, video playback has been a little strange. First, Albums will not display another supported format outside of mpeg4. However, if I browse through WMP and get to the directory all supported formats are displayed BUT playback is not the same? Get the "buffering" prompt throughout playback time and again. Playback also appears a bit flawed through WMP while launching through albums is perfect.
does anyone have any reason why?
Would like to refresh this thread as I still wonder why I can't get the same video codec support through Albums?

Help - Vid recording wont playback

Hi Guys,
Hoping someone can help me out here.
I made a Video recording from my gs2 (Stock firmware)Superfine, Max Resolution, Default camera app. 3.99gb File Size (I think this could be a factor, my other smaller recordings play fine - Maybe someone could try record to max and see if it playsback on PC (the recording automatically stops when it reaches 4gb i believe) )
Its recorded as a Mp4 file. (when i inspect it via my gs2 it says 3gpp format).
It plays fine from my gs2, however it just wont play on PC.
Tried VLC and also download various codecs, but still no luck. Also tried about 6 converters but none of them could even load the file.
Would really appreciate any help!
cheers.
You can play it back with a video player that supports mp4 H264 playback.
I use the x264 codec plus Media Player Home Cinema or Apple's Quicktime to play back.
