Hey guys, I was wondering with the Touch HD and activesync it connects at 10.0 mbit so extremely slow for transferring large files across. I have read that it can go at usb 1.1 speeds... any ideas how to utilise 2.0 speeds if possible instead of taking the micro sd card out?
cheers
Improving activesync Speed
Hi Guys
I have found that for normal activesync you can increase processing speeds amazingly by "deactivating" Touchflo3D (TF3D).
I have over 1200 contacts and 5,000 calendar events which I have never completed the activesync for (over 12hrs) with the TF3D active.
However, if I go to the Today screen and "deactivate" TF3D and activesync, then the above data is synced to my HD in 20 minutes.
I then reactivate TF3D.
The same principles may apply when trying to transfer large file volumes.
Hope this posting helps
Kaid
Active Sync is known to be extremly slow. So if you don't want to syncronize your pim, you should always use the "direct" connection as usb drive.
Yeah I think activesync is _extremely_ slow
I'll give your idea about turning off touchflow a go and see if that helps.
Thanks for the hint.
I think that disabling TouchFlow does seem to speed up activesync.... I guess I might have to do without the flashy interface. I got by without it for the last 4 years.....
However it still doesn't seem like it is as fast as my WM2003 O2 XDA II.

More or less the same story here, with TF3D activated it took almost 6 hours, now it's syncing and it looks like it will finish within 40 minutes. (According to the progress bar).
I have a Dutch version here, what I don’t understand is the reason why this is happening, my Diamond (Dutch 2.03 original HTC rom) is taking 16 – 20 minutes for the same complete syncing process. HTC helpdesk did not have any idea and advised me to swap the phone which I did and the new one is not better at all.
Any idea how to find the real answer here?

Have active sync 4.1 connected to windows 2000 pro @ work. No problems. But I am on windows '98 @ home. Now I appreciate that the active sync 4.1 does not work with '98 but is there any solution that will enable me to tranfer files to my MDA vario when I am @ home short of upgrading to 2000/xp etc
Thanks
Robert
Try wm5storage a small program that turns the card on your device in to a usb mass storage device (like usb memory stick)
Find it attached - can be a little fiddly to set up - make sure activesync is closed on your device and make sure no other programs are accessing your storage card. - including some today screen plugins.
Install program into main memory and do a soft reset before trying it.
Its free sourced from modaco and i think there is a newer version kicking around somewhere.
Thanks meschle will give it a go. It would appear that there is life in Dudley past 1am?

No, it's just I have access to XP and Win 2000 pro PC's @ work where I spend most of my time. I'm there every Week End and most days and as I predominantly back up DVD's @ my shop/office, check my business emails, I don't spend anytime downloading @ home. Therefore I don't have much need for a high spec machine @ home when they are freely available to use in my office.
One of the few and I mean few, perks of owning your own business, is that I answer to myself only. I wish I could answer why I work such long hours though.......
Hello,
I have set up my Shift now, but there are some questions left. So I hope you can help me.
1. As a tablet PC i tried to draw something with Paint.net. I did not work, because somehow the pen was not recognized. It acted like a normal mouse, which is being moved. But in the standard paint it works flawless. I can draw with the stylus without any problem.
Do you know, why this is not working in Paint.net? Or do you know an other working alternative?
2. I unlocked my German SnapVue and tried to install the Office 6.1 from modaco. It installs, but after a soft reset I can not start that applications.
Do you know an office mobile 6.1 version, which works with a German device?
3. If I have WLAN and the 3G Modem both enabled, how can I be sure, that the WLAN connection is used?
Can I change it somewhere in Vista, so that WLAN is only used, even if the 3G Modem is there?
4. When I am online under Vista only with the cellular line, which network type should I choose?
Home, Office or public network?
5. I have only a 5GiB data for 3G. What should I do to count the internet traffic of Vista and SnapVue together?
Till now these are my questions. Thx in advance
edit:
6. I thought it crashed and so I softreseted several times: Initial syncing of the calendar needs more than 30minutes!!!
How can this be? The rest syncs fast as usual.

Some points I am not sure, but did you try launching the .exe files of office within the PROGRAMME folder?
Maybe the links (verknuefungen) are pointing towards the default English folder.
About Wifi...I think if you dont use Internet Connection Sharing, Vista is bound to use Wifi. So make sure ICS is off and not running in the background. Better close it in SETTINGS>>> MEMORY (Einstellungen > Speicher..oder so)
the lack of a proper X button to close apps is bothering me the most.
X button on WM
I'm using a QuickMenu 2.7, which is free and provides a better menu system than standard WM, plus a few features, including X-button (configurable) and screen rotation.
Hope this helps.

If because of the low memory you just want the smallest X-button util, just use the HTC X-button, takesup little room and does the job!
1.
i installed it just now on my tablet though not shift but also with a pasive digitizer
and it works for me used 3.35 beta
3.
network connection->properties for the wanted network connection
choose tpc/ip->properties->advanced
and set metric yourself
lowest number will always be used over higher ones so if you set the wifi to lower it will be used when 3g is on too

I informed myself about this feature and you are right. This lets me prioritize my connection.
But: I found out, that the Shift disconnect the 3G Modem from Vista (but not from Windows Mobile), if I enable WLAN. So I don't have to do anything, it works as it should.
About my 5th question:
Because the 3G Modem is only the connected over Windows Mobile to Vista, I can use any datacounter on Windows Mobile site and it counts all my traffic. I use BatteryStatus
I am very impressed with Quickmenu, expecially it's rotation facility. Many thanks for letting me know about this freeware program.
I installed TouchFlo 2D on my HTC Touch (WM 6.1 / Telus, Canada), and it's a great leap from what WM provides!! I cannot however, access the Internet, Browser, Bookmarks, or YouTube from the associated Internet page TouchFlo 2D provides.
Is there a way to get them working through TouchFlo? I tried uninstalling TouchFlo thinking reinstalling it might help, but that crashed my syncing ability. I had to softboot my phone, and the computer as well several times before they started communicating again.
Additionally, should there not be a solution for getting the Internet functionality working, is there a way to successfully remove TouchFlo 2D ?? I'd possibly like to try something else if I keep having problems.
Can anyone help ??
Thanks,
Karen VK
Did you install Opera, as well as the YouTube app? The links will not work without the supporting applications. You can also try installing M2D Customizer to set the internet widget to use Internet Explorer instead of Opera if you don't want to install it.
Thanks for your response, and sorry I didn't respond sooner (!!) My system had a melt-down so I de-installed TouchFlo, re-formatted my computer, got a new cell .. I'm just getting back to trying to play with it. I'm hoping with your simple response I'll be up and running in no time.
It was frustrating though, that I tried to post my query over a month before it went in, but couldn't start a thread, and the help team wasn't able to resolve anything. Thanks soooo much for being there !!
OK .. I finally started trying to get back to this yesterday (after my computer and cell both crashed) but I'm still having no luck with TouchFlo 2D. I re-formatted my HTC Touch 3050 (Telus, WM 6.1) for the 3rd time this morning, and I'll be re-installing all programs now.
I previously said TouchFlo 2D is great, but it's been frustrating. I cannot use the Internet through the associated tab -- even though I installed Opera as suggested. Now I also cannot access Google Maps, though it is installed, and worked prior to my whole system crashing, and; my phot album won't come up. Oddly though, YouTube worked yesterday (didn't before) before re-formatting this morning.
Is there anything else I need to install to get this working ??
How do I either get Opera to work, or access the internet through Internet Explorer which is already installed?
How do I get Google Maps to work?
How do I get the photo albums to appear?
Thanks very much
Karen
Honestly the best way to get it running is to flash with a rom that has it included. It makes TF2D much faster than just installing the apps anyways. Plus that way it all works and usually the rom also included the tf2d configuration app as well.
Thanks for your help. My HTC Touch crashed again, so it looks like I'll be replacing it. Not sure what I'll be getting, but I may be jumping up to the HTC Diamond (with TouchFlo 3D built in).

Hey guys,
It's me yet again, I've got some more questions I'm not sure if I should split some for the other forum area or not. Either way, let's start. Note that I'm migrating from a Nokia N95 so ignore my lack of knowledge I'm trying .
1. What programs would you guys suggest for sending text messages from my HD to another phone via my laptop, bluetooth or USB are good, Nokia PC Suite had something for this but I've not found anything for WinMo.
2. I'm used to having a the ease of changing my profiles so my ring tones and what-not for different situations normally at will, WinMo does this very differently is there a program that I can use to just pick say 'Work' and it goes to vibrate?
3. Is there a newer version of the Opera mobile? I'd like to update it as it think it has a few bugs.
4. My contacts are Sur, For how do I change this for all contacts? I have far too many to change them all by hand.
Sorry about the length and thanks again.
For such a large forum it amazes me that hardly anyone posts to my topics.

Yep - you can download the Cab for DDrivers 15 Tab TF3D changer for HD http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=450278
This allows you to have 15 tabs on the bottom of the screen - one of which is a profile manager. There are loads of applications out there which also do a profile manager and can also do it for time of day etc.

One way is to use Outlook or Outlook express and import your settings from your Nokia to this. Then update what you require in Outlook - surname/first name or vice versa (means you can use the keyboard and mouse). Then connect your device to the computer and update contacts through active sync.
Or get a different contacts program: Something like this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=478970&highlight=yota
Thank you very much .
I've installed the Outlook add-on and look forward to using it. What other profile programs would you suggest as I'd like to ring and vibrate at the same time or just vibrate but with the ability to listen to music (vibrate turns off sound WTF?).
Also which is newer the Opera beta or the Opera on the forums? I'm a bit confused as to which to use ...
Lastly will these contacts programs replace the HTC variation or simply add my changes to the HTC version? I rather stick to the inbuilt one as my main contact storage.

Yeah - bit of a pain that one. I use S2U2 and S2P
http://www.ac-s2.com/
- this allows me to set different levels for the volume of the ring and the audio. You can do this on the standard volume control on the HD by clicking the top tab but I prefer the S2U2 version where you see both volume levels in the same window.
You have to go into the settings of S2U2 and turn volume control ON under the phone settings.
If you don't like the S2U2 thing there are loads of other apps with volume control settings. Think of your phone as a phone and a music player hence 2 controls! S2P = Slide to Play. Is a bit like the iphone's music player - get the open GL version as it is better for touch HD.

Hard to say - the beta may be newer but will have issues with stability (hence beta as it is not a real release and intended for testing). Best to find someone on the forums who has a stable version. I'll have a look but so far mines kinda still got issues.

It will replace it. May have to bite the bullet and go into outlook or sort them individually. Good thing is - once you've done it - it's done. I spent an hour sorting mine in Outlook but I'm glad I did as it now means I have a very tidy contacts list in both applications and they are synchronised together - so if my phone/outlook lose data I can just put it back again. Plus outlook can backup the settings to a .PST file or to excel etc for importing to other programs and computers.
Main thing is. So long as you have backed up your contacts you can always put them back on your device the way you like em!
Hope this helps? If you need more help just ask - I'll do my best.....
Sorry missed a bit....
A large number of people use SPB as their profile tool.
http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/mobileshell/
May be able to find it on this site for testing but if you like it you should buy it.
I'm sure there are loads out there just have to go through and install some and then take them off is they don't work as you like.
Good thing about the phone is if you think you've messed your phone up you can do a Hard Reset which boots the phone back to how you got it when you first turned it on!
Look at this page for some good ideas and tips
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Blackstone
Thanks for your help.
Can SPB Mobile Shell be used with TouchFLO3D? I enjoy using the interface so not looking to change any time soon.
Thanks about looking into Opera for me, I've seen a version posted round January but that's it.
No SPB Mobile Shell cant be used with TF3D. Or actually TF3D cant be used with SPB Mobile shell. You can technically keep TF3D running, and then use SecondToday software to add a second today screen that is easily accessible by tapping one of the 2 bottom soft keys. I have this very setup. I have mobile shell and pocket plus as my main today screen, and SPB Diary and SPB Insight as a second today screen. This allows me to have SPB Diary as a full screen as it starts at the very top and ends when it ends (at 300 because thats SPB's max alignment).
For profile auto switching, try Inesoft Phone. It can coexist with TF3D.
Agree with everything above.
Should have asked you - What issues are you having with Opera?
This will help me to troubleshoot for you as it may be options.
Thanks for your help again guys.
Inesoft Phone seems a bit slow and I can't seem to find out how to delete some of the profiles as well as release the contacts (I only wanted the profile application NOT the others).
Regarding Opera it's mainly because the keyboard seems to type very slowly on webpages, the URL bar and stuff is fine it's only when typing say a username or password on a website that it has problems.

Can't say that happens on mine - Have search XDA-Dev forums and also Google and some people report it is a bit slow and have tried using Opera Mini.
It may be worth doing a post specifically for this as someone will be able to help (hopefully)
Personally I'd stick with Opera mobile, I used Opera Mini on my N95 once, it was good but the power of Opera mobile is still by far the best in regards to mobile internet experience. If anyone finds a newer version of Opera please send it my way .
Just to point out that I'm still looking for a profile application, Inephone installs the Address Book which I don't want. I've recently enjoyed using SSMaPa so I suggest it for anyone who needs it.
Thanks for your help again guys.
Any more suggestions?
Hi all,
any of You jumped the train from a TP2. Care to give some comparing between these two. Speed / stability (stock) / functionality.
This is one of the phones I am thinking about, would love to hear your experience.
Ruud
Yep, I made the jump and I know I'm not alone. In short, the DZ is miles better than the TP2. It's much faster, smoother, and all the Android stuff just works very nicely. Tons and tons of apps in the Android market. No issues with running out of RAM.
Build quality is awesome IMHO.
I do miss the extra row of keys that the TP2 keyboard has, but I think the buttons on the DZ keyboard are even better than the TP2 buttons.
I'm still running a stock ROM and am not even overclocking yet (and huge overclocking increases are possible).
Can you tell that I quite like my DZ ?
Well, I did take a plunge a week ago and I'm more than impressed. Everything is pretty much where I'd expect it to be. There was some initial 'seething' issues with changing from winmo to Android, but after 2 days I got used to it without any probs.
There is one thing that may be an issue, (its not phone related but OS related).... please correct me if I'm wrong but only today I realized that Android DOES NOT SUPPORT BT INITIATED DIALLING. So, keep that in mind... it turns out to be a big obstacle for devs and can be an issue for some....
There are apps out there trying to imitate the feature but I found them to be a complete waste of time.
Other than that, go on, make a switch, you will not regret
sent from htc desire Z
Almost every aspect is better, especially speed and responsiveness, android market is lots of fun, as well as htc sense's seamless integration with lots of different services.
GPS is infinitely faster at locking on and there is no lag. If you have copilot for winmo, it should work on android too (deactivate 1st)
The downsides of Z: the 4 row keyboard is inferior, plus lack of directional keys (the touch button isnt as convenient to use), but there isn't much choice if you're going for android.
Hinge mechanism isn't a step forward, more like a step sideways if not backwards.
I've yet to find a good video player, importing ringtones or other system sounds is a bit more painful (others might disagree). Active syncs equivalent, HTC sync is ok-ish and makes life a bit easier.
No MS Office programs, gotta buy alternatives (can somebody recommend one?)
My TP2s battery seems to last longer in comparison.
And finally, flashing custom roms onto TP2 was infinitely easier than on DZ (I've yet to brave rooting)

What about the built-in QuickOffice ? Not as much functionality as Office Mobile of course, but not bad for free.
Hi all,
thanks for your nice reactions.
I feel that the DZ might be a good choice, but some minor things are just unknowns to me.
To go by the topics mentioned by You all :
BT initiated calls, no problem, I am not using that.
@steviewevie, Yes, I can see You like it
I understand the keyboard to be worse than the TP2, but still better than the DHD or HD7 which do not have a real keyboard anyway. I think I can live with the fact that I cannot "bend" it towards me. IF I go for a keyboard again, I will probably have not much choice.
I am very much using the synchronizing of exchange mail, contact & calendar. Do I understand that the DZ out of the box cannot do this, so I need to purchase something, Which software is confirmed to be working without mistakes ?
Further I am using Excel to open some of the files I synchronize through USB (ASync now). I understand that the software to open or work with them will be another one, will the mentioned QuickOffice let me do this, or what other solutions can You this (I am not against paying, but it just should be working)
What about internet sharing, is this flawless ?
Thanks once again for your answers !

On my TP2 I used to sync my Outlook (2007) Calendar with my phone. I initially tried using HTC Sync (free software download) to do this with my DZ, but I found trouble sync'ing edited repeated appointments. I found that Google's own Calendar Sync utility worked well though (from their site). So I used that to sync my Outlook Calendar with the Google Calendar (online), and now they both stay in sync with my phone.
I never used to sync my Outlook Contacts with my phone. What I did was to find a utility to export them from my phone in CSV format, then imported them to Google Contacts online, and then keep them in sync with my phone that way. HTC Sync is meant to handle Outlook Contacts, but I haven't tried it.
I can't comment on Exchange mail. There was a bug with that in the stock ROM, not sure what the outcome was, I think there was a workaround - try a search.

What I am doing today is connect the TP2 to my PC in an area where I do not have any other internet connection. The TP2 will provide internet connection towards my PC in such way. After that I can go to our VPN in the office, I can use all corporate applications I need etc. (through Citrix) Main thing is I need the PC to receive internet. Today this is done by one of the options I get when connecting the USB cable to my laptop (Async, Internet Sharing, Hard Disk accesss)
I just do not know what tethering is ?

Tethering is exactly that. Yes, it works fine. Not sure about the VPN bit but I don't see why it wouldn't work.
Bear in mind that with Android, we have the source code for the vast majority of stuff. So if there are glitches, someone can try and fix it without having to wait for the vendor to do so !
Made de jump few weeks ago... Man what a change....

Only minor thing I can think of is the keyboard and the lack of directional keys.. but that is just a matter of changing your habits...

Out of the box, Froyo does have basic ability to synchronise Exchange mail, contacts and calendar. However it doesn't have the full features of Exchange Activesync (like searching the exchange server and some security options like device encryption). As steviewevie points out, the known bug seems to be with Exchange server 2010.
You might want to have a look at Touchdown, which gives you back some functionality. The downside is that you have to buy it (although the trial is 30 days to test it out). It uses its own interface for calendar, email, and tasks, so they can't be 'combined' with the HTC ones. Contacts can be combined with the phone's contacts, but editing these contacts must be done via Touchdown's interface. See here for a review: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJM46Rno3M4
If you need to sync with Exchange server 2007 or older, and only want simple synchronisation with email, contacts and calendar, then the Desire Z should manage that. Anything else though, then do investigate the thread steviewevie has posted, and also see whether you need to get an app like Touchdown.
Hope that helps.
ok but what about the sound quality, I am led to believe the Desire Z has a mono speaker so calls are mostly missed, whereas the TP2 had stereo, am i correct?
Hi Monomer888,
highly appreciated comments.
Had a look at the link, this looks impressive to me, I might really jump for touchdown if I see that the build in function does not do the job. But I will just start without Touchdown, we use Exchange2007.
Hi, kappo78,
I have no idea about the speakers in either of them. Why would I miss out on something if I have only mono ?

The speakerphone quality on the DZ isn't as good as the TP2. Don't know if this can be tweaked or not, I don't recall reading that anyone has tried that yet.
The audio quality, however, listening through headphones, is apparently very good. There's a separate thread on that.
