I use HD as a GPS unit. That was the mail goul in buying it in my case. I use internal GPS, and run IGO. It is a OK combo, but I am wandering if using externale BT receiver may make it a little better? Does anyone have any experience using one vs another? Is external recever going to be much better, if at all. Which one would be good to buy?
thanks

I didnt use the internal gpsas i didnt manage to have IGO8 running in landscape mode yet..
i bought an external gps receiver for my touch dual from qstarz that was cheap and awesome! around 30 uk pounds!
once i get IGO8 running im gonna do a comparison!
I have been using external BT GPS with my HTC Touch, now I bought HTC Touch HD and my verdict is pretty clear. GPS built in HTC HD is total **** comparing to my old one external. However it is much much convenient to have internal one.

How do you switch from internal to external (I am using IGO)? Which external one do you use?
Thanks

Well if you want to save the phones battery then you use the external.. at least in the car! the uptime of external BT GPS at least mine is just amazing!
i had it on in my car for almost 4 days without charge before the battery low led started flashing brilliant!
the internal would be more handy if you where on the go walking, or someplace you wouldnt want to carry the external unit with you

That's why I hate my external. Mine lasts just day and I have just one charger in my car, so I could charge either phone or GPS. While driving I was charging phone and GPS was charging overnight so far so good. Things got complicated when I bought a new car and this new car turn off charger when I turn off the car, so no overnight charging was possible. Now I don't have to worry with my internal one. I don't think it uses more phone battery because now you don't have to have BT turned on.

Hi all, I am after a new GPS reciever and have basically decided to go for a SIRF3 solution.
Could some of you please check these two choices out and maybe offer a little advice on them.
Basically the only differences I can see are that one is unbranded and in the UK and the other is a Holux and is coming in from Hong Kong
Thanks.

I purchased the Holux GPSlim 236 for a friend and it works great with iGuidance v3. I chose it based on feedback from the XDA and Howard Forums.
Second the above. The Holux works perfectly, period.
Thank you both. Any more opinions on this over the weekend would be very much appreciated.
My purchase will be decided no later than Monday and it WILL be based on these replies.
I really need a quality receiver. I have gone through 2 BT-77 units and have found that reception quality fails substantially after around 6 - 8 months.
I don't want to make the same mistakes.
i have the holux works perfectly!!! also using it with iguidance v3
**Edit**
and by the way.. if it helps, my holux has been hooked up and powered on constantly in my car for about 3 months(yes it has constant power, thats not battery life)... and i have only had to restart it once.... i mounted it in my trunk and bought the optional external antenna!!
Another +1 on the Holux unit. I've had mine for about a month. No problems at all, really quick on picking up a GPS singal.

Lol, you must have been reading my mind.
I was having major problems with that BT-77 unit, the one with a globe picture on, and I put it down to constantly being plugged into the car charger.
I think my mind has been made up. It's just unfortunate that the shipping is so much that the total cost is going to be around £70. I dont mind paying the extra if I am getting a KNOWN good quality unit, it's just quite alot more than I really wanted to pay.
Many thanks to you all.
i think mine gets the most abuse, as it sits not far from 2 12" subs and about 1200 watts of power still works flawlessly... i would buy a holux reciever again if i had the need to for whatever reason, its a [email protected] good solid reciever
Globalsat bt-359
I use a bt 359 w/iGuidance 3.0 and it works really well...
Another vote for the Holux. Mine works very well and picks up signal quickly.
Holux 236 is awesome

Hello XDA-DEV .
I needed some opinions about this phone. I checked all the reviews that were online , I have been studying about this phone for sometime now. Let me tell you about me and then I will ask for your opinions. I currently am using a HTC TYTN and it’s a ok device. I have a O2 XDA EXEC that I bought 6 months ago and I love the device but poor signal were I live ( MA, USA ) I mean I have owned many HTC devices ( TREO 750, HTC Apache , HTC TYTN , HTC Wizard , HTC Universal , Blue Angel and DASH and many other devices like BB 8800 and 8700g and 8100 and TREO 650 and 600 , but WM is the way for me) I still have all these phones. My questions is that I love the screen and performance of the O2 XDA EXEC but the signal is very bad. I mean day and night between that and TYTN. I have tried pretty much any ROM that ever came out cooked or shipped with all the radio ROMs out there still nothing. So my questions is that how is Advantage, I am buying one this week but before I spend my money on it I want to see if it is worth the money.
Form all the people that have Advantage or AMEO or U1000 could you give me some opinions also size wise is it a lot bigger than Universal or NO?
Also if anyone lives on NE area in USA how is your experience with this device.
Again I appreciated all the effort that this community has done and all I can say is thank you.
My personal opinion is that it does feel quite a lot bigger than the Universal, but it is totally worth it! TBH, neither fits in your jeans pocket so once you get to Universal size then it doesn't matter if a device is a bit bigger if it is packing what the Athena is packing. Can't help you when it comes to signal, although I personally have had no problems at all.
Thank You. Honestly i dont think the size is really a problem. do you use this as a phone also. how is the day to day phone call operation. is it a pain or no.
I use mine as a normal phone, when cycling it's on wired headset, rest of the time I hold it to my ear..
'tis big, but hey so what
I went from the TyTn to the Athena. I loved the size of the TyTN with the exception of the screen size. Screen size just didn't feel right. I was a bit apprehensive before going to the Athena but don't regret it one bit. I was also discouraged when I found out that you couldn't hold it up to the ear like a regular phone but now that I've been using it for a while, I love it and much better. Phone is MUCH more stable than the TyTn, faster, etc. If I had to choose it would only be between the Universal and Athena. Are you experiencing the screen alignment issue with your TyTN?
Edit: Also, bluetooth on Athena works better than on TyTN.
from what i've heard so far this device is great. i have been waiting for it to come here and i will get me one 2maro. i cant wait till get it in my hands. i love the features. i was gonna get iphone but i phone has nothing on this.
i wanna say thank you for your opinions. it mean alot.

no. but everytime i put this phone to my ear , it seams to hit something in the screen casue i keep hearing keytone. but i never had this problem with Uni, witch has bigger screen.
TYTN is ok but it is slow. i mean it freezes on me all the time. it takes 4ever for it to load.

Yes, you're right...it does freeze a lot and is slooooooooooow. You need to get an Athena. You won't regret it. I have the www.jawbone.com as my bluetooth headset and works great. Also, not sure if it was a hardware or software issue but they keyboard on the TyTN sucks!

I use it as my only phone. Most the time it is paired with my Jabra BT8010 which makes it much more useable as a phone. However I hold it up on speaker phone if my Jabra is off and that works fine too. Enjoy your new toy!

It's working perfectly. I bought three units. So me and two buddies, all using TMobile in the US are very happy with the phone. I just don't trust the MicroDrive yet but don't really worry about it because I use a 4GB miniSDHC card to install my apps to. I'm in love with this phone and so are my two buddies. The built in GPS, which the TyTN doesn't have is a great great thing. I've purchased pretty much every high end phone HTC has made and this one is by far the best. The Universal comes in second place in my opinion. Reception on the Athena is better than the Universal and TyTN in my area. I gave my Universal to my fiancee so she uses it all the time. A great device and better than the TyTN.

I also own a business and this phone helps me stay organized. Also, being in a technology business, my customers almost expect me to have the latest and greatest. I don't disappoint. ;-)
I'm using TomTom. You do get one free map but what I did was just went out and purchased the full product for $150 from www.tomtom.com. It comes with the entire US and Cananda. I also like the Plus service. I have my state map, the regional map for this area and also the entire US map loaded. I keep the state map active. The entire US map doesn't contain all of the POI by default. I downloaded the POI that were not included in the default install so I'm up to speed. I use the local maps because they help with performance according to TomTom support. Just less data to deal with I guess.
My next purchase is going to be a low profile stereo bluetooth headset so I can listen to audio while lying down, etc. Going to be asking for opinions on this shortly.

Not sure. I've only had GPS for my PPC Phones. Never had the GPS devices. I know that in the past, the PocketPC GPS software was easier to customize, etc. Not sure with the newer GPS products.

the Micro Drive issue is due to the ROM, so it's a software issue, now all the device seems to be running ok, but personally, i still don't trust the Micro Drive that much, the quality of video plays really well on the DOPOD U1000, you do need to make sure you set up your core player or TCPMP correctly, after that it plays the video smoothly.

Yes performance is quicker and so is the battery drain. I've just had a couple of files come up corrupt on the Microdrive so I know there is still some problem there that wasn't solved. Hopefully in the next ROM though. For now I'm keeping only movies and MP3's and audio books, etc on the Microdrive but nothing that isn't backed up.
Work gave me an X1 with unlimited everything. My dad wanted a good phone too so I decided to buy him anything he wanted. Ended up choosing the HTC Touch HD for him. The screen, 5mp camera, and the UI are a lot nicer than the X1. I prefer the design of it too
I'll have both phones for a while as I set his up so if anyone wants me to compare a specific functionality I'd be happy to.
PS: I cannot believe people seriously buy the iPhone 3g???
No Video
2 mp camera ??
No 7.2 mbit HSDPA
No front facing camera for videophone
No SD card option
No removeable battery???? So you cant carry around 2.
No bluetooth connections
Cant use it as a 3G modem
And on.
All that really amazed me when we were picking out a phone for my dad.

I was't aware that it does not have video. The SD card is not a serious limitation as you have 8 or 16 GB internal memory.
Non-removable battery, No GPS software, no office applications, and inability to suport stylus (for handwritten input) are the four main reasons I withdraw from my iPhone decision. I also did'nt like not being able to use better software keyboards than the standard.

How is not having an sd micro slot not a disatvantage?
What if I want to load up 10 movies before I go on holiday (14gigs). Do they expect me to bluetooth it? Usb it?

I don't call google map a GPS software. IPhone does not have GPS software in the league of the like of TomTom, Navigon, Copilot, and iGO.
If you want 14 GB of movies, you will need the 16GB iPhone instead of the 8GB one. So, I think very very few of us will find it insufficient. But I agree with you on the part concerning ease of transferring files to the device. With Winmo devices it is faster. more flexible, and easier, for sure.
That's why I'm so glad to have chosen HD recently.

Hi everyone...
I got an extra Sprint Mogul that I do not need and am going to sell on here or craigslist.... It is fulyl functional, but not the prettiest thing.. some scratched and such in the casing.. I have to go with ti the sync cable, power cable, and the earphone adaptor... I have have the newest stock rom with HTC home, some games, ant TomTom 7 w/ US/Canada maps installed on a 4gb microSD card... The battery holds a great charge.. The screen is good.. and I have a shell/case for it so it looks "pretty"... What do you think a fair price for it would be?
Thanks in advance

WHY SELL SOMETHING WHEN YOU DON'T PLAN ON MAKING IT USEABLE.
I think these guys would stand a chance in a class action.

There's a car dock?
I own it:
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Galaxy-Vehicle-Navigation-Sprint/dp/B004EV3YF4
Probably the same as the home dock. A tiny piece of paper that states it won't be 100% functional until 2.2 is released.
So how well does that suction stay on the window? I've never bought one with suction (have a generic that attaches to the vent) and am always afraid it will just fall off during driving due to the weight and bouncing of the phone.
I have the car dock, and it works as expected, minus the fact that the audio-out isn't yet functional. That's not really the reason I bought it though. I wanted something to put the phone in while driving and using navigation, etc that was specifically made to fit this phone. It also seems to stay suctioned to the window quite well.
I have it too and the suction has never failed on me. I've only put it up once and I got it at Christmas. It does have that tiny paper that says the audio out will only work once the Epic gets 2.2. Other than that, I think it's great.
People who paid anything more than 24 bucks (Retail is 40, 24 on amazon) should really be pissed!
I bought both car and desk dock, thinking "oh well, 2.2 will be here soon, I can use it exactly how I want!"
How do I want to use it?
- At home, I want to drop my phone into my deskdock have it charge AND PLAY AUDIO THROUGH THE AUDIO OUT to my stereo, via the slacker APP and the Subsonic AP.
- In the car I want the same exact thing.
*bluetooth audio streaming is NOT acceptable imo
its a great dock minus the fact that 1/2 the reason i wanted it was to listen to music in the car.
i was hoping that it would stop the battery drain i get from usign my phone as a GPS too but it just slows it =\
I have the car dock and I just put the phone in backwards and you can plug the power and audio cable directly into the phone. I also bought it for the purpose of holding it in place when I was driving and using navigation. Its a great dock, especially for 25, what I paid.
I bought one, and it works great, except for the audio port like the other owners have mentioned. It'll be nice once that gets enabled, but somehow I'll manage to soldier on through life until it happens. </sarcasm> I'm just happy as a dead pig in the sun that it charges and switches to car mode when I stick it in there. Makes it so nice for running the maps app and wayze. Speakerphone mode is really nice too.

all you need is a 2.1 amp charger - I can use GPS / 4g/ Stream music and leave the screen always on with full brightness, it wont discharge at all. Infact it charges pretty quickly!
