How to relocate Opera Cache to Micro SD Card - Touch HD General

I have searched this forum without success. I wonder if anybody can help me?. I want to relocate my Opera cache from main memory to my Micro SD Card. Does anybody know how to do this?

The silence is deafening. I guess this cannot be done.

not 100% sure if it can but
the reason why it's a bad idea
and why opera dont let you do it
default is that
1. sd is slower then internal storage
2. cache must allways! be there and sd is removable opera would crash big time
if it stop'd being able to access it's cache

within the opera browser type
opera:config
in the address bar. I think there is an option in there somewhere to change this, however personally, i would leave it for the same reasons stated in the last post.

I didn't tried it yet, but I think relocating the cache in a ram disk would be an improvement, whereas the cache wouldn't be stored after a soft-reset. Maybe an good idea for a litte application .

I do not mind if the access is slow. I have been relocating my IE browser cache to storage card for a long time on many different devices without any adverse effect.
Thanks for the reply; I will try the suggestion above.

I was wondering why i was allways out of memory...

...finally found out where it's all been going.
the Internet explorer cache!
I just cleared it out have gained over 25mb of RAM storage back  (due to a combination of a wireless SD wifi card and very cheap t-mobile GPRS)
my device was pretty much crippled until now, with an average 4-6mb free ram only and nothing in the my docs folder... i only discovered the cache folder by chance
so what i want to know is how can i limit the IE cache size to something sensible? like 2MB max? or even better how to move the cache to an SD card?
move the cache to an SD card - there's various tweaking tools to do it. I'd recommend something like memaid.

How to move the Cache folder?

Guys, Just a simple question. How to move the Cache folder of Opera to the storage card?
savvakis
I wish someone could answer this question as I have found it to be the biggest problem. Opera caching is expanding and eating up all the precious little storage memory available. There must be a way to set it so that it stores caching on the storage card. Please anyone knows how to do this?
yes it's very very easy.. and documented across the forums.
inside opera
type opera:config in the adress bar.
this will open the internal configuration.
either scroll down to user prefs section and click the words user prefs
when it expands scroll down to cache Directory4 and change the address there..
then scroll right down to the bottom and save.
restart opera.
alternatively when you open opera:config
in the "quick find" type
cache directory4 and press return.

You can change it to the storage card but that is not a good thing as I think it's MUCH SLOWER! You can test it out going to the websites that check your bandwidth. It only holds maximum 10MB (i believe) on the cache. I'm wondering that even though on my Touch HD1, i had it stored on the storage card and the devices' memory was still some how decreasing with every site I visit (although some part of it is stored on the storage card)....anyways, try it and let us know about your situation.

Opera Cache on Storage Card

I am using the 2Gb SD card that came with the phone.
I have moved the Opera Cache to the storage card. The problem i am having is that when I clear the cache from Opera, it takes a very long time. After 2 hours of surfing, it took about 6 mins, the phone just sat there with the coloured circles spinning. I have read on these forums that the card that comes with is a class 2 card, and that class 6 is faster.
How much faster, and will it make a big difference.
Thanks
Since Opera creates a large amount of files, it'll always take a long time to flush the folder where the files are located.
I'm quite sure the class-specification addresses the transfer-rate and not the access-time.
So you could have a faster copy-rate, but deleting files would be as slow as now.
BTW: The same problem caused me to re-transfer the operacache back to flash-memory. The access-rates are much better there and so the process of deleting many files is faster.
Hi Dennis.
Thanks for the reply. I'll probably just move the cache back to the phone as well.
As long as you periodically delete the cache, you won't run into any storage problems.
Hi, how can i set the maximum space of the cache? And how can i delete the cache? With file explorer or with a built in function in opera?
Hi Bib_x. I think if you go to the opera config you can set the cache size.
Type opera:config in the address bar.
You can delete the cache using file explorer or the built in function in Opera. Makes no difference. I don't think you can do a select all in file explorer, so the function in Opera is easier.

Cleaning main memory

Greetings everyone,
I'm new here and relatively newbish to HD2 (have it one month).
Id like to know what can I do to free some space on my device memory?
All tho I installed quite a lot of programs, I always installed them to storage card, so my guess is since device free memory is getting lower and lower
every time I check or install something, it's got to be some cache from Opera, google maps or programs maybe, temp. files from rar perhaps and similar.
So does anyone know for sure what can I delete in my device memory, in windows, etc and not damaging system...
Tried search but with no result...
i'd also like some advice on this too.....
memory depletion happens due:
- opera cache (\windows\opera9\profile\cache)
- IE mobile cache (\Windows\Profiles\Guest\cache)
- htc album cache (\application data\htc\htc album\cache) which is the greatest. i.e. if u have a alot of pics, then everytime you view them, ur album cache grows bigger and bigger and depletes memory.
My advice:
- install clear temp....it's free
- assign the custom folders in clear temp to the above folders.
clear ur cache with a press of a button. done
also everytime u install a program even if only to sd card, some files are installed on ur main memory. Only way to remove those minor files is by a hard reset. You can then assign shortcuts to ur sd card installed applications.

Put your apps on main mem and the phone will be more efficient in its overall use of phone RAM. Mem card installation does not save any RAM or really serve any logical purpose unless the app will not install to phone storage or you have used it all up.
Mem card installation slows the phone down and why on earth would you not use the main storage mem when thats what its there for?

Are you getting main memory and RAM mixed up?
Anything in main memory (storage mem) does not use up RAM therefore has no effect on it.

I found moving Opera Cache and HTC Album Cache really helped me a lot with the memory.
This is a good thread that will help.

Tip 67
AND
delete google maps from main mem and make a fresh install with newest version on SD-card. This will also enable compass-direction to google maps.
Move copilot to SD-card with Resco explorer
u can try nd move ur cache folders to sd card but it all needs registry editing tweaks nd it may end up not working as for htc album cache for ex. so easiest is using clear temp my friend.

In the tips, where it mentions "moving" things to the SD card there is no "move" option so if the folder (eg "My Device\My documents\My Pictures
") is cut and pasted to the SD card will the OS/Phone know to redirect/look in the new location?

Of course not, I have some (I'll say advanced) knowledge in computers so I dont mix up some basic terms like this . I was thinking of Device memory (storage) not RAM. Since this windows mobile thing is relatively new to me, I wanted to know if deleting cache and temp. files does effect WM and Sense stability....

Thank you for this mate, just the thing I was looking for...
Oh, and one more question, I tend to switch themes made with HDWall frequently so when I install new theme, replacing old one, does it completely overwrite last one or I have enormous buildup of unused theme files on device memory?

I was a big fan of cleartemp but did not install it on the hd2 because I read on this forum somewhere that it not only wiped the phone's memory clean but also formatted the storage card!

OK
Just checking, because it's a common misconception about memory usage.
A lot of users think that installing on mem card will save RAM!?
Anf they think a lot of other eroneous things as well!

HELP! needed :(

hi evry1. need help quickly! My X2 main memory is criticaly low and i cannot find any files sufficient to take up 200 MB,WTF? im pretty sure that its some kind of a internet cache cuz like 50 Mb were taken while i was on youtube.Someone help ( I use Opera Mobile 10)
it sucks
well that does kinda sucks, most efficient way is to back up what you need and hard restart. but a quick temporary fix is to do a soft restart or run clean ram. for future references, make sure you save all apps on your storage card (there is a setting for this in marketplace too) also if you use "notes" a lot, save them on your storage card. just do a long press and click "rename/move" and put it on your storage card.
clean ram link http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-cleanram.html
I would also try moving whole Opera 10 to Storage Card - then you just need to make a new link to Start Menu and everything works OK, tested =)
And use Schaps Advanced Config for to redirect temp & documents folders to storage card
My advice to install immediately two small programs:
Clear Temp and FastCleanup.
Both make a great job on clearing temp files.
Also good to look at "Error Report" folder in main memory
where appaently all the MMS data is saved.
Reinstalling all the software to the sd card is a good move.
Clean memory and all the cache etc. from all the browsers.
Remember all the downloads from Opera goes to /MyDocuments on main memory.
In my case everything is fine, the only thing which slowly takes away memory is SlideView - with each photo and video it creates thumbnails.....
+1 for Clear Temp
