2 probs: google map pre d/l? sms confirmation ? - XPERIA X1 General

hi
1) can i pre download google maps? eg if i am going to thailand, is there a way to d/l the map first? accessing internet while roaming is expensive!
2) can i set so that prior to the sms being sent out, i get a confirmation box?
sometimes i accidentally touch the send portion and out it goes..

anyone? please...

I haven't found a way to preload maps for google. The only way i suppose is to hook up to your house internet, scroll and pan the maps on your desired zoom level painstakingly. note, different zoom level count as different maps.

i dont liek the idea of d/l on demand.. prefer things like d/l first.. aka nokia maps.. can we BUY nokia maps for wm6?
or is there any good program i can BUY? i dont think there is any good freeware for such..
i need maps in southeast asia... singapore / malaysia / thailand
2) anyone got solution for sms confirmation b4 send?

Microsoft Voice Command

Has anybody got it? + If so...does it work well and what are your comments?
Here's more info http://microsoft.handango.com/Platf...30&productType=2&platformId=2&productId=90635
Thanks - Sunny.
Not bad for launching apps etc.. and controlling media player.
A nice bit of software to show off to your mates, as the phone tells you the track title, artist playing etc..
Pretty useless for dialling though I found.. because its made for USA it can't really recognise the way we prenounce names properly (UK) hence everytime I ask it to dial "Dad" it says "Call Fonz?" (someone who is in my phonebook)
And don't even attempt to use it to actually dial numbers you read out!! You'll end up ringing somewhere in australia or something
HTH

I agreee, nice toy, but you will not be using it often.
My thoughts exactly!
Hm, mates, I tend to have a different opinion. While it's a version 1 product I didn't expect it to be too erfect yet. But my experience is positive:
Yep, nice toy to show off is right
I regulary use it in the car to initiate calls. I have about 1,800 contacts and would never be able to find a contact with at least one hand on the steering wheel without this program. That's what I was looking for and that's what I got...
Hello, as it costs peanuts I was bored at work yesterday therefore purchased it online. I think it's absolutely fantastic! Only problem is that you have to emulate an American accent for it to recognise your contact names but considering it isn't released in the UK yet I can live with that.
Thanks - Sunny.
Tried it also, but not really convinced. Takes too much in memory and suffers from severe bugs. It's ok for fun but it's quicker to do everything without!!!
I cannot get it to recognise anything in the car, which with the new rules is where I need it most
MS Voice Command
Hi,
I’m using Voice Command on my new XDA II; it has proved very useful for controlling Media Player but as we have yet to see the euphemistic entitled ‘International English’ or other language versions, you cannot as yet directly voice-dial numbers which are prefixed by ‘0’ or '00' (that eliminates most telephone numbers outside the North America). Nor can you directly dial any numbers using the GSM prefix ‘+’ tag (which totally eliminates direct voice-dialling international numbers). However, whatever number(s) and format are stored within a previously stored contact and matched by Voice Command, they will be passed correctly to Pocket PC’s dialler.
The real downer is the lack of an appropriate XDA II Profile which would allow Voice Command to be used via a Bluetooth headset – let’s hope HTC will rectify and enhance the available Bluetooth Profiles in the forthcoming ROM update. As an aside, it was recently reported that The Bluetooth Consortium (or whatever) have finally agreed the spec for the Stereo Headset Bluetooth profile – perhaps that wishing for too much from HTC and the forthcoming ROM update.
Provided you have enabled the XDA's automatic 'Microphone Gain' (otherwise you will rapidly become bad-tempered and scream at your XDA), and despite the aforementioned foibles including the annoying requirement to pronounce ‘mobile’ as ‘mobil’ (and need for the use of other North American phonetics), Voice Command is impressively reliable and usually makes the right match with your stored contacts and media files.
MS are to be congratulated; voice response has come a long way since the usable IBM freebee app given away on early IPAQs!
And no, I don’t work for Microsoft!
I live in Australia and, as with many others who have posted, was unable to purchase Voice Command.
Except for not being able to 'dial by number' this product really seems very good.
I don't suppose anyone knows a way that we could extend the trial version, until an international version hits the shelves.
uninstall/reinstall seem to always work
I have gotten the Voice Command to work pretty well. I did have to play around with the various types of commands to find out, which commands worked better with my voice. For instance if I say call John Doe on "mobile", I do not have very much success, but if I say the command " on cell phone", in lieu of mobile it works about 90% of the time. It also works better if I delay the confirmation "yes", and it works better if I make the confirmation longer, like "yes that is correct".
The program works well in my car and for some reason some days or contacts work better than others. I love the product because it does afford me true hands free dialing of contacts. For a first release I think it is pretty good, but of course needs improvement.
I believe voice applications are definitely the future for PPC devices, and that in the future we will see more and more progress in this arena.
Gee thats too bad. Personally, I find it works quite well on my XDA2. But then again, my American accent helps. If you consider that living in the UK, there is a different accent like every 20 miles, you might then realize how much of headache this must be for MS's devs to try and deliver a product that can deal with that. Think about it. Maybe a UK software company will come out with a better voice command alternative? naaah... (but it would be nice, the more we have to choose from the better!) I'll tell you what does help though as I believe was previously mentioned: You do need to make sure that you have the AGC enabled, however I've notice that when I do a softy, that I have to re-enable it. Also try and keep the thing about 18 inches away form your mouth. At the moment, my XDA is next to me and I can reach over, tap the voice notes button which has now been assigned to MS Voice and then say "play whatever song" and it will do it 9 times out of 10. Voice dialing works about the same, 9 out of 10, but it does seem to have trouble understanding the way I say "correct" to confirm. Best of luck!
I like this review though
Fantastic Voice Training Software
Steve Monaghan from Sydney, Australia, January 22, 2004
Having used the software for over a month, I have been able to achieve at least 10% voice recognition in perfectly quiet environments. I have been able to contact so many friends and colleagues I have not spoken to for ages as the program intuitively translates my request to dial my best friend into any number of contacts available in my outlook. I give the product 5 stars for enabling me to call people I hadn't even thought to call. "Wow, I haven't heard from you in ages." The joy you can bring in surprising someone while surprising yourself at the same time. While the product doesn't support useful features such as bluetooth or pronounciation correction, if you can adapt your speech to the pronounciation of the electronic voice, you can achieve terrific results. I can now speak with an accent that has my friends in awe as I attempt to get the software to dial the intended contact. This program has bought enjoyment to many. Don't hesitate, buy it today. Renew old friendships and share the fun with your friends and family
I love Voice Command too. It's great for dialing and opening programs. I have little problem with it opening programs like calendar, notes, contacts, various games.
I disenabled the confirmation while dialing, because it doesn't always recognize my "yes" or "correct". (and I'm from the US) The caveat is that when I ask it to dial from a contact, sometimes it's not the right one, and starts to dial it, and I have to hang up real quickly, hoping it didn't actually start ringing. This is mostly due to me not remembering how a contact is listed, so it's really me, not the program. But my most dialed contacts work great. I even have my voice mail listed in contacts, entered in with a pause and my password so that it dials my voice mail and password automatically. It's great!
Really great program ! ...i silently hope that they will come with an update for different languages...
can't find a trial version...
where can i download the trial version of Microsoft Voice Command? Can someone pls attach the trial version or send it to my e-mail account? my email account is [email protected]. Thanks.
trial version of Microsoft Voice Command
Can anyone tell me where I can download the trial version of Microsoft Voice Command? Can someone please attach the trial version or send it to my e-mail account? [email protected]
Thanks a million.
Voice control program
I heard from a PDA outlet in Melbourne that there was an Australian version of Microsoft Voice for PDA. It is not badged by Microsoft but someone else - does anyone know any more about it or where I could download it from?
Instead of Voice Command, I am using NeuVoice - you have to train it for your own voice, but at least that way you can speak naturally.
You can use it to dial numbers, start applications, run commands or open files.
It won't work in noisy environments.

Show Cell Broadcast / Cell Info Display / Area Info

Sorry, mates, that may be a rather silly question, but I couldn't find anything...
On my NOKIA I always had the location / area in my display. Jow do I get my XDA II to do that? Is there any setting or key combination that would enable it?
Yes,there is,but it is not functional how on Nokia phones because you will contiunue to receive messages on xda with your cell-location.
To enable Cell-location or other services on your operator go to:
Start-Settigns-Phone-More,Enable Broadcast channel,Settings-New,Channel number 050.
Enjoy.

Hehe, very funny, mate. Yep I do receive a notification every 30 or so seconds... Best part is that is tells me first my suburb, next time the suburb east, then mine again and then the one south  while I just sitting here at my desk
OK, after the good laughter - is there not something as I used to have it on my mobile phone :?:

sms via cellular-line, bypassing the sms-gateway?

hello,
i wondered if it might be possible to develop an application which enables one to send an sms directly to another phone (running this application)
one may wonder, why i want to do such a thing, but for the better understanding, i will it explain it right here:
i moved to another city two weeks ago and i ordered my phone- and dsl-line at "1&1". 1&1 activated my phoneline and dsl 16000kbit/s connection. additionally they sent me a sim-card for my mobile phone. it enables me to call any fixed line number without any cost. and after a bit of research on the 1&1 website i found, that i can buy a second sim. i would be able to call this sim without any cost, too.
but the sms would be, as everywhere else 19€ct/sms.
so i wondered, if it might be possible to write a windows mobile-software that would be able to send some text directly via the cellular line. without passing the sms-gateway.
i thought of: text-to-tone conversion-software which then calls the other phone, which auto-pickups on certain phone-numbers, and then receives the tone-sequence, and converts it back to readable text.
of cause, the better solution would be to send the text digitally, but i don't even know if that might be possible.
any suggestions and ideas are very welcome.
sorry for my bad english, and sorry for the fact, that i will not be often online, cause my own pc is broken, so i have to go online in school.
greetings
garfield
Wouldn't this be similar to a fax machine?
Not being obnoxious, but it just sounds difficult since SMS is rather just a quick way to send messages from one phone to another. Calling and sending messages via text wouldn't be fast at all. I'd rather just say what I have to say...
i'd say if it was possible it would require both phones to have the program to interp the data recieved as the right type of sms
it's much like the sms over gprs thing
lemme get this straight, this is essentially an analog modem emulator, so not only would "messages" be able to be sent but files could aswell.
Would it also be possible to make "said" communications when your already on a call? that would be cool
Carnivor calls Rudegar on the phone,
Carnivor really says, "Hi Rudegar, im gonna send you that excel file now"
Rudegar really says, "Ok Carn"
you could have a signal that it sent to trigger the other phones running app to be ready to listen for the signal, then handshake and transmit and recieve data, quick ok msg on the screen, or even have it so you get "transfer completed" in the earpiece once completed you can carry on speaking over the phone.
Rudegar really says, "Thanks Carn, this is really good info, chat chat chat
intresting concept!!
you could intergrate "send data" into the phone app skin so when your in a call its easy to start up,
so it'd be good for small file transfer, or a chat app for ppl that have spare minutes to burn and dont mind not being able to make and recieve calls whilst its running.
but it could have its uses
Hi,
yes it seems to be a modem emulator, while being on my way home yesterday i thought about the problem bypassing that gateway... i thought about an own sms-gateway.
anyone has some information on how a sms gateway works? so i could write one and integrate it into my Fritz!Box or run it on my computer. this would enable me to send sms without cost, because calls and connections inside of the 1&1 VoIP network are costless...
the analog modem emulator would be an excellent idea, too... as it would allow to transmit files and "realtime" chat between one or more people.
so, any ideas on the modem emulator and the gateway are apreciated.
greetings
garfield
just Get mxit it doez dat
Get mxit it does what u mean but both phones need have this Client and you need to be online at the same time and if you not it has offline message storage and it doez filesharing to www.mxit.co.za/wap and try smsbug www.smsbug.com

so mxit is a chatrelay for other instant messaging protocols, and one has to be online via GPRS/3G/UMTS/EDGE ... this produces extra cost and is not exactly the thing i wanted to have.
smssbug is a great alternative, if you're sitting in front of a pc, but no alternative for me, as it also produces cost although this is secondary when talking about 3ct/sms.
what about that "modem" emulation? is there any software out in the internet? i haven't found anything via google.
and the next thing i am thinking about is, if it might be possible to digitalize the phone-to-phone communication. or is it limited to analogoue transmission of data, because of the way it is transported over the network?
i haven't looked into the idea with the sms-gateway, but i will look that up as soon as possible, when i have my internet-connection at home.

GPS lat long read BY SMS in and watch into tomtom

Hello,
i want to buy a gps tracker for my son and be able to look where he is by sms receive and read the lat long into TOMTOM 6 or 7.
Did you now if a special import programme exist?
I here from navideo but dont have receive any answer from the company with my request.
Tanks in advance
Try Navizon. Works great with touch cruise.
Garmin Xt also has that option.
Gps exchange
Thanks for the answer.
I look quickly navizon but as i see i dont use sms coordinate. You must use NAVIZON ON LINE.
I am interessed to use sms with gps lat long coordinate and see the location without use internet connection.
I can donwnload google map for necessity but my tarif plan cost to much for internet use.
As I told before Garmin XT has that option. It is called peer points. You can send and receive the coordinates and see them in the gps map without having to pay anything besides the sms.
Thanks a lot pereirald,
I will try it look great your information
Is a petty that kind of function didnt exist in tomtom or that no small plugin exist.
Hello pereirald
I look the manual and i see that this sms exchange are only avaylable for GARMIN product.
It can be that i don't read good enouth in English.
In my case i have to use a GPS TRACKER that not give the possibility to change the sms header and message.
Thanks in advance for your replay
Hi pako1
I think that in that case you have to introduce the coordinates by hand (probably the thing you didn't wanted to do) and so it doesn't matter which software you have on your polaris. I think almost all have the ability to introduce coordinates. I thought that because you were still going to buy the gps tracker and so you could go on a Garmin product for your son and XT for you. Anyway , hope you get what you want

Hi Pako,
I think you need something like
1 - MobileJustice, Sprite Terminator or some other piece of so called "Antitheft software" that is able to receive an SMS and reply with the present GPS coordinates (device with GPS intern/external).
2 - The SMS sender is the easy part (any mobile phone will do);
3 - transforming the recieved SMS coordinates in a point on a map may be done by Google Earth or any of those pointed in 1)
Good Luck / Hope this helps
thanks Ulopes,
but your answer is not helping me.
The fact is that the gps tracker send "SMS WITH LAT LONG" but from my HTC CRUISE i cant see in automatic the location on a map without access to internet ( my internet gsm plan is expensive).
I need :
1) read sms from a application
2) locate the lat/long coordinate on a map without any external connection ( NO WIFI, NO GPRS, NO TELEPHONE)
3) It will be wonderfull read this coordinate from SMS INBOX and watch it as point in TOMTOM O garmin xt or in a GOOGLE MAP CACHE.
I think that this kind off application will be helpfull for a lot of application as:
CHILD GPS TRACKER, CAR LOCATION, security location of bagage ecc
Ciao
Please explain:
How is it possible to extract lat. and lon. gps possition from received or sent sms?

I too have been trying very hard finding this kind of software but without success. Phonetracker will not work for me because my tracking device is Benefon TWIG Locator that is not supported for TomTom Navigator or Google Maps Mobile. Strange that it is supported for Garmin Mobile XT only.
I have also tried
GPS.PI http://www.jgui.net/gps/gpspi/
OXI2OZI http://www.frada.net/ozi2ozi/ozi2ozi.htm
But without success with my devices
HTC TyTN II, WM6.1
Benefon TWIG Locator
Is there anyone out there knowing about a useable solution?
and what about non gps
is there a solution for non gps phone?
i want to recieve a phone location (from cellular network) by sms.
is there a solution for me?

Whats the deal with google voice?

I love google voice so far, the concept is fantastic. However, i am having issues trying to get everything integrated with my touch pro 2. Has anyone found a way to integrate google voice into the phone so it is seamless, as if google wasnt even there? Is there a way to integrate the SMS into the phone as well instead of going to the website to SMS from the phone? Just wondering what everyone else's experience has been so far, it is great but so very clunky for me.
Thanks!
Great topic!
I would like to know also about it, I´m already suscribed but as I live outside of USA, service is not available yet...
Best program I've used to date is onedialer. Its not free but you may want to try out the free trial and see how it works for you.
Have to say the developer runs a pretty nice forum asking for input and looking to the user community to offer suggestions on ways to improve. I generally don't pay for much software but believe this one is worth it...
I dont know why someone would dial the google voice number from there phone to make a call (long distance maybe?). I was able to change my TMobile voicemail to the Google voice number so my voicemail messages get transcribed for me [although the accuracy is somewhat hit and miss ].
I found that iDailer and iContact work best. You can go to the iDialer website and you'll be walked through creating a config file. You'll have the option to add your current phone number, your google voice number, and google voice as a callback number. You can use the Rhodium keyboard controller to assign the Talk button to run iDialer when pressed. iContact will open it automatically when you select a contact from it.
As for SMS, I know it's annoying, but the best I have found is to just text the person through the web service once and save the number you get back for them.
Hope this helps!

Whats "Long Distance"? I thought that term died in the 90's.

For SMS (and calling) cell phones, the best way is to get the other person to send a text (to your Googlevoice number), then add their '406' number to your address book as their mobile number. Then there's no need to go to the web site in the future. Obviously that only works with folks you communicate with regularly. I'm about to try 'onedialer' for the others...
Have a look at an app I've just released, it does Google Voice SMS, and is free:
