Hi all,
It is really exciting to see how a new device's forum gets filled up so quickly . (i'll be getting my device sometime today so I feel like a small kid waiting to go to the candy store hehe)
I did do some reading on http://www.batteryuniversity.com/ and also in different parts of the forum.
But i am not sure how this case fits in all of the battery discussions out there. If am going to drive in the states for 3-5 hours a day where i;ll need to use my phone afterwards to continue my day.
Will keeping the phone plugged in the car charger hurt the battery?

The best to do in order to increase your battery's life is to let it drop to 5 or 10% then plug it on your car charger.
It will last longer then if you keep it plugged on the charger, that's for sure.
On the other hand, the average life of a battery of this type is between 1 year and 1 year and a half.
Personally I keep a second battery with me all the time.
That's what I used to do with all my previous devices so I never be short of battery

If i dare ask, given the scenario where you disrubt the battery while charging, would it hurt it? I read that it is better to keep it charging once plugged in, but then again this is Li-Ion which should not get hurt if you take it out while charging!

Not charging in the car
I noticed that when I have my device pluged into car charger and use it as GPS, it does not charge or loose power. In other words, if it is half-charged when I get into the car, and I drive for 2 hours, it is still half-charged, no more and no less.
What is going all?

This is correct, but for the good of the battery you need to have it down to 5% (or less) from time to time

I used to have this behavior with my HTC Athena, but did not see it yet on the blackstone. I'll check in the coming days and will let you know

I'd recommend just using your GPS and charging at the same time. Go with BigDede's advice and let it run down a bit before plugging in. This will help avoid possible overcharging.
Compare this with what most laptops are put through - permanently connected to the charger and hardly ever being used on battery. Our Dell still has more than half its capacity after three years of this. If you are still using your HD in 2 years, give a battery as a birthday present!
I don't know of anything that would damage your phone's battery during normal usage. The main battery killers are deep discharge (protection circuits turn your phone off before this point) and very high temperatures (you weren't going to leave your HD on the dashboard of the car during summer while you shop??). Oh, and the obvious, including blocking your car's wheels on a hill, providing canine nutrition, etc...

This is a common misinformation.
Do charge the battery often. The battery lasts longer with partial rather than full discharges.

Your battery will probably do just fine, as long as the pack itself does not heat up too much from the prolonged charges. The battery it self should be protected from overcharge, and tickle charge should not hurt it.

I got my 2 batteries dead in less then 2 monthes on my HTC Athena
due to charging the device everyday while on 50% or more. (Actually charging it in the car, in the office at home, etc ...)
The 3rd one lasted more then a year when I was letting it drop to around 15 or 20%

I had this same thing when charging through the USB port in the car stereo. I had to revert to the dedicated car charger providing power from the cigarette lighter socket to get it to charge.

I had some trouble in the past, charging an Ipaq in my car.
You have to check how much the device can provide.
I think the wall charger is giving 1A.
On my USB car charger it could output 750mA. Maybe that's enough to maintain battery level in the case of the HD in GPS use.
I'll check.
You can check how much your usb on your car radio/USB can provide.
But I suppose it's 500mA which is the standard level given by a PC.And that may not be enough.

Just thought I'd pass this along. This little battery charger for the Wing or Dash charges your phones battery with just one AA battery. It kicks up the voltage from 1.2-1.5v to 5.7v. Saps the hell out of the AA battery but charges the phone -- its really cool. I bought two of them.

I got one of those little portable chargers for mobile devices. It's a neat concept. Upon pruchasing one of those (in the US) for $19.99, it came with a cheap AA battery, and several adapters for different mobile phones. I used the AA battery that came with it and it charged my HTC Herald P4350 for 20 minutes. You can actually drain (and cause damage too) your phone battery it you have it plugged in (with a dead AA battery) your device (it said so on the package). This is my experience and others may be different. In a nutshell, the amount of time it charges depends on what kind of AA battery you use. Again, this is my experience.

Yes it does depend on the type of AA battery you use. A Lithium AA will give you much more than a rechargable NMHI. I put in an alkaline AA and talked with my brother for two hours today using my Bluetooth headset and this thing kept my phone to 100% charge the whole time.
I am not planning on keeping it plugged in all the time especially when its dead.
I am going to use NIMH AA batteries in my Solar Charger that sits on my Dashboard. Rotate them out and get basically free energy. Hey I know its not going stop the Icebergs from melting but its something.

Yes it has a mini USB connector and it should work with the Kaiser but you may want to ask the seller to be sure.

The kaiser battery is rated for 3.7 volts and the battery that device uses is 1.5 volts. It would charge at the same rate, but drain the AA very quickly. The cost of the batteries it would take to power that thing would quickly outweigh the benefits it would produce. If it had 2 AA wired to it then it might be remotely useful. I mean if you absolutely cant survive if your phone dies, then yes it would give you enough battery life to keep your phone going for a few hours.
Yeah...well I bought two cheapo spare 1600mah batteries of ebay with the thought of carrying one around with me to swap out if needed....but I was considering getting one of the 2-piece rubberized cases for my phone. In that case, the battery compartment I believe will be inaccessible and I don't want to snap off the back case constanstly and wear down the integrity. Therefore I thought something like this might be a good option.
Even with free access to the battery door, I would think opening it up on a regular basis to swap batteries isn't good for it (would get loose, etc...).

Well, I used Motorola P790 and it is pretty good, rechargeable. I can recharge it together with my phone with one charger. It gives abt 30% recovery of your battery in abt 2 hr.

Not really, these units have a small switching power supply which boosts the voltage to be able to charge the phone (if you look at the picture you can see the copper inductor coil for the oscillator circuit inside the top clear piece), a Kaiser won't charge with an input voltage under 5 volts.
I don't know how long it takes to charge, but I doubt that you can get more than 1 good charge from a fresh battery.
I've had all sorts of charging problems recently. With the Wifi, GPS & Phone on it would use about 500ma of power. But if I was running SatNav it would actually use about 850ma.
What I've done is twofold. I've bought a 2700ma internal battery for the phone and I've got a 12-24v charger that puts out 2a (2000ma) and so far it has kept the device fully charged, even with Bluetooth running!
I'm not sure how to gauge the 2700ma battery as I've only been running it a day. I think it needs a bit more of testing before I use it full time without the spare, but it's also good to have the spare....
So i dont know if my battery is dying or if there is a glitch. But when my battery runs low, about 15%, i plug the charger in until it reaches about 40% charged. With the charger still intact, i do a soft rest, HOLD CALL, HOLD MENU and CLICK END CALL, and voila! The battery is fully charged after it fully boots up. Can anyone contest that this is true?

Yeah ur phone is definitly not 100% charged, the battery just isn't calibrated correctly anymore.
I'd recommend you recalibrate it in order to get your full battery life out of it again, or else your probably going to find yourself running out of battery faster than usual.

Im not a battery junkie so my theory may be wrong, but let me explain a little of what i have learned from automotive batteries.
Remember this is an automotive battery.
Technically an auto battery is charged at 12.6 volts, but the amperage also needs to be rated at whatever the battery may need to be. for simplicities sake we will say that a battery is 12.6 volts and 500 cold cranking amps.
The battery will loose a charge to 9.6 volts and 260 amps.
If we put this battery on a charger and get it back to 12.6 volts but we did not give it enough time for the amperage to get back to normal we would have a 12.6 volt battery at 350 amps. the voltage is 100% but the amperage is not. the full battery capacity is not there and will not work the same way.
in your case I would bet that that battery also drains faster when you perform the charge like that. another thing that can happen is that when you first boot it up the phone software needs to adjust the true reading of you may be sending a voltage spike to the readings.
Remember, this is just a theory.

And it would charge even faster if you turned the phone off.
The charger puts out 5v at 1A. That's all it can do.
If you have all the features turned on, that uses up a certain amount of juice, and the rest is used for charging. If the phone is off (or most/all features are turned off) most if not all of the juice is going to charging the battery.

Your right on this because i noticed less than an hour my phone was fully charged when turned off.
Anybody ever look at the power ratings on the wall charger vs the car charger?
I was told my car charger was a quick charger, but never took the time to look at the power ratings.
i just did the reset thing to my phone and now am at 100% too!
This is way better than having to plug it in! Gonna throw all these wires in the garbage!

Car chargers charge faster, but less completely. It's a trickle charge, so it'll fill it up faster, but it's not great for your battery and it isn't a solid charge like your home AC charger will give it. Use your car charger sparingly, and always give it a full charge on the AC charger as soon as you can after using your car charger.

Do you charge the phone via USB (computer)?
This is a common issue if you use your conmputer as a USB charger. Computer USB can't supply enough energy to your phone. The USB current is too low only 0.3mA or 0.5mA.
Just use the ORIGINAL charger or other well-quality charger with higher current (700mA+). This is enough for both charging and playing. Of course the charging will take longer time while playing.
The higher current will not damage your phone. It will charge your phone faster.
NotOriginal and cheap charger may have low current-output or the charger is sometimes bad designed than the phone will recognize it as i computer USB. (if bad designed than the phone takes only low current even if the charger is able to supply more)

Not glad to hear that. I have never (only 2+months with X10) observed a problem with the original charger while using the phone (playing, GPS or wifi). Sometimes a bit warmer, which I consider to be common.
In general is the reason the same. The phone requests more then the charger supply
I think it's a software issue.
The bluetooth used to eat away at the battery but BB.67 sorted that out.
Wifi never was a problem for me.
But the GSM Radio is a absolute battery PIG.
It's using so much juice it's scary.
I hope SE sorts out all the ****.

Well it is probably also related to the signal level..? I use BB 58, never use BT. The GSM signal is almost full at home (while charge).
BTW: To charge the phone with the original charger takes tightly 1h for me. (from +/-30% to 100%) (not using the phone)
Mine's was not charging above 88%, but then I deleted batt. stat and it went to 98% and then 97% and then again to 100% then I used an app called Battery Calibrator and everything is fine now.
Depends what game your playing. Pocket legends with screen and volume on full, wifi connected, overclocked and set performance etc etc I can use a fully charged battery plugged in and drain it in 2hours. Its just supply and demand, the charger can't keep up.

Has anyone smelt the charging circuit of X10 or the Battery when its around 40 C? It smells like something is burning....phone doesn't has any problem, but I just smelt the charging point and battery and its normal?

Nope it's not healthy at all.
It's a massive problem as it's causing severe wear on the device.

you mean to say there should not be any smell from the battery? I think it's normal to have electronic smell becoz otherwise my phone is working fine, no problem at all.

Dude last time i checked any sort of burning smell coming from a electronic device is bad.
I had the same smell with my old board and that board failed.

Yeah.. it's not getting enough juice.
The GSM radio "heavy power eater" + wifi = no good.
I use battery doctor, which gives options to kill unwanted applications, monitor battery temperature, do full battery recharge cycles.
But also you need to turn off Wifi for battery save and keep u away from radiation

That's not the point.
The hardware should be able to charge faster than it's using up the juice.
Apps running or not.

I checked again and I think its coming just from the battery.. those terminals. My battery never reached over 45 C and usually operates in 32-37 C and phone does not reboot at all by itself, may be I am just over cautious. Also, it is X10 HD (newer batch).
May be there is something wrong with the battery as I have flashed many roms in last few days and had deleted batt. stat everytime I flashed it. Enlighten me on this stuff. Should I undervolt and underclock CPU to avoid any damage to CPU?
I've got a question.... I leave my phone charging overnight on the pillow next to me and use the phone in the morning still plugged in to check emails, browse news etc and only remove the charger when I'm done and going to work...
Is this good for the phone and the battery or am I better off unplugging and then recharging when low again?
My method above keeps me charged up for the day's use as otherwise I would need to charge again at work..
What do you guys think?

As long as you are using the original Cable+Charger, you aren't harming the phone or battery at all. Technology on batteries and chargers are amazing now, especially with usb-c.
i leave my 6p the whole nights too nothing happens. Just use the original charger and cable and youll be fine.

While you can't overcharge the battery, leaving it connected like that will degrade the long term life of the battery. A lithium battery shouldn't sit at peak voltage (100%) for extended periods of time. Here are a couple of really good articles:

You're pretty much right on the money there. I think three ideal range is between 40%-80% though. Small top up changes are the best way to charge lithium batteries.
20% is too low. Charge cycles slowly degrade the battery. 80% is a good number, but failing that 100% is a better option than continually cycling it. But this is a phone we're talking about not a laptop. I would imagine cycling is what's going to happen to it in most normal usage scenarios.
