guys is there no auto flash on the camera? it seems you must manually select to turn the light on or off, this is terrible and time consuming
any fixes? i still think after the k800i, sony's camera went down hill ;(((
This seems to be the case, I haven’t come across any fixes, and hopefully an official firmware update should take care out it, although…. shouldn’t the coders here be able to outcode official Sony programmers lol
Thats how it is with LED "flashes"
A LED cant emit enough light to really work as a flash, so meh
hmm, yes i hope somebody fixes this, one of the reasons i upgraded from diaond was for a flash camera and well its quite frustrating ;((
Frustrating I agree, I upgraded from a nokia N95 with a LED flash and that knew when the light low and turned on..

LED flash is never going to be a flash... even is it's on by default or by light sensor... so deal with it.... I haven't seen any led flash act as a flash..
if you think i'm rude... well.... Maybe I am...
Drunk.....
Well, the point should be that it should still turn ON/OFF automatically, regardless if it flashes just as you push the shutter button, or turns on beforehand when it detects low light.

Indeed. I dont think anyone expects the X1's LED to be truely "flash", but seriously... other phones can detect low light, and turn on when the picture is taken, then turn off after again. No need to "manually" turn on the light when you want to take the photo. It's pretty stupid.
PLUS this phone has a light sensor, AND just using the camera alone it should be able to detect low light. What gives?!
And I thought I was doing something wrong with my settings that caused the phone NOT to flash. Do other phones with an LED not flash? I'm pretty sure my N95 does.
yes this phone is FULLY CAPABLE of this but stupidly it just hasnt been incorporated!
the Raphael/touch pro has the same issue
You can change in the registry so the LED will start automatically when you start the camera. I think it is good. Because when you need it, it will work and when you don't need it it doesn't matter because it doesn't affect anything. Of course you can turn it of in the settings as normal.
set HKLM\software\SonyEricsson\Camera\PROPERTY_PHOTO_LIGHT to 1
Note: Don't know if it is the same on R1 but I'm using R2 with the latest camera software

Interesting tweak!
Not ideal (sometimes you still want it off when in medium light) but certainly better than always off.
I am a bit disappointed that the latest R2 firmware did not include an improvement to the Camera app that would set the light on/off automatically based on the light level. Seriously, is it THAT HARD?
The backlight turns up/down based on the light level... and I know other people have written apps that do things based on how bright it is...

Does anyone know what the deal is with the 2nd status LED, the one on the left of the earpiece. What is it for?
Thats the bluetooth LED.
my bluetooth is on, and ive never noticed it blinking. under what circumstances does it blink?
Ive wondered this same thing ever since Ive gotten this phone... I have never seen it blink and with bt the right one is lit for me...
I activated my phone yesterday and received maybe 30 or so texts since then. The notification light only lit up after one of them, which i received a few hours ago. When I got the phone I just assumed it would light up for texts like my g1 did but after it didnt i was disappointed.
So, is the green light on the right supposed to light up for text/email/voicemail/etc...notifications? thanks and sorry for asking such a stupid question and doing it in the wrong thread
The light sensor is on the left, LED on the right. If you put backlight to auto you can test by coverint the left side.
is there even an auto for brightness?or is it during calls only?
confused
i don't have this backlight auto settings.
where can i enable that?
i just have a slider where i can change the brightness manually
yeah where is that setting for auto backlight, i would love to have that.
Settings -> Display -> disable Auto Brightness, and tap it off..
i dont have that.
maybe the mytouch didnt come with that sensor?
me neither.
i dont have that option there.

dude, as far as I know the Magic doesnt have any light senson.
the option quoted above doesnt exist
I don't think so
This has been the second time I have heard the one on the left is a light sensor by two different people , Maybe it is a light sensor but maybe some of the stock versions of android like mine {Vodafone UK 32B board} currently doesn't support the hardware??
I can see both the LEDs alright but the there is no obvious way to set the one on the left as far as I know.
Italian (TIM) HTC Magic (32A).
i now upgraded to hero rom and voila, the option is there.

Which model do you have? As far as I know, the Hero is the only device that has the light sensor, that's why the auto-backlight feature is only available in the Hero roms and not the stock Magic/Sapphire/MyTouch roms... I don't even think that the other thing is an LED, it looks like one but I'm sure I read somewhere that someone opened up his device to check and noticed that there are no wires connecting it up to anything!

The Magic/Sapphire does NOT have a light sensor. The Hero is currently the only Android device with a sensor thats why you see that option with a Hero ROM.
no it doesnt work. as my predecessor already noticed
As far as the automatic backlight setting goes, it is my understanding that the phone should check how bright (or dark) it is, and adjust the display brightness accordingly (brighter when out in the sun, darker when sitting indoors / dark rooms).
However, it seems to me it just sets the backlight at ~40% and that's it. I went out into the sun with my HD2, and the brightness didn't change and I had trouble seeing what was on the screen.
Is there some kind of way I could test, if the light sensor is working? Or is this setting simply badly designed and I should set the brightness myself?
I'm currently running latest Energy ROM (23569 Cookie May 09) but it was the same with the stock ROM, so I don't think it's related.
PS. A little side question, if I may; if I perform task 29 before flashing... do I still need to do a hard reset after flashing a new ROM?
...in the very least... are there any apps that make use of the light sensor?
Well I know the acctualy percentage in the settings never changes when its on auto (atleast not for me)
But I can clearly tell a difference between being in a dark room and the backlight being on low
to being in the sun and it on max.
Ive also never had trouble reading the screen, the screen is always plenty bright enough.
Prehaps you've got a bad one?

Care to share the name of that app?
Also, it's difficult for me to say if the screen is busted or not. On max brightness (as opposed to the automatic setting) it's a lot more comfortable to look at in the sun, albeit indoors it's OK on any setting really.
EDIT: I don't suppose the automatic setting can be tweaked for better performance via some registry changes?

I think it's called Lumos.
Try searching for it.
You certainly can test it. Just cover the light sensor (upper left corner above the screen) with something. I don't recommend thumb, as you might press 'start' button. You will also need any application with white background.
The brightness should clearly drop.
Auto only sets the brightness from 20% to 60% (or so it seems). But the effect is clearly visible.

No change at all.
I'll restore the stock ROM to see if it's a firmware issue, and I'll check that Lumos application.
EDIT: Lumos clearly detects light changes and works well. Seems it's either something to do with Energy ROM after all or possibly I'm just blind and I can't see any changes. I'm still going to check the stock ROM, just to be safe.
BTW, once more, can someone tell me quickly if hard resets are needed after task 29?
EDIT 2: OK, it DOES work after all, I'm just blind; the change however, on the automatic settings, is minimal. I actually had to put the phone under a light-bulb, as covering the sensor didn't really work. I wonder if it should be calibrated like the g-sensor...

i think the day time brightness is fine but the night time setting is far to bright. i would love for this to be customizable as well

For indoor use the auto-adjust works fine for day/evening/night, but outside I always need to turn off the auto-adjust, so it can go to 100%. When back indoor again, then switch to auto again and so on ... and so on ... and ...

I know where the option to shut off the light for the Video recording is but it doesn't shut off. My question is: is there of shutting off the light when i am recording a video on my phone? Maybe and app perhaps? or a way of deleting the setting in video mode? or a work around? anything? Its annoying when the option is there for it to shut off and it doesn't work. Its the same for my gf's xperia x10 phone too, it didn't work for 1.6 after the small update in summer and now it was fixed either with the bigger update. help please?
Take out the phone battery and re-insert. Hope this will solve the problem.

Yes, i have rebooted my cell phone several times. Thanks for trying to help out.
I also have this problem, the video light stays on despite the setting saying "Off".
Using 2.1.
search for xperia x10 flash light on market, it should work
Its on a low brightness. Just a privacy thing so other people know its recording. Kinda like the red light on most cameras

Oh really? thats too bad, i dont need the like all the time on, it kills my battery faster. I know before the update it used to be able to shut off once the setting was set on "OFF" mode. Ps other phones have the capability to record and have no light at all whats so ever. I dont think its a privacy issue

I agree with AssyrianBLOOD, it's a privacy issue. And don't worry about your battery life, HD video recording will kill it way faster. (For me, Battery life on 2.1 absolutely sucks )

The amount of battery life that an LED takes is so pathetically small that it shouldn't affect anything.
Every phone I've owned has had some sort of light to indicate recording as a privacy measure.
Is it something the manufacture imposed or government regulation? Because i know for a fact not every recording device (smartphones/ipod touch) has a LED or any indicator when you are recording. Secondly, the off setting used to work when x10 originally came out until the so called privacy issue came up. I want to know of a way of shutting it off without trying to cover it. I know HD also drains the battery faster but i am not making HD videos here, i'm making youtube videos for my faceboook and i though my phone does a good enough job. I just dont like the light setting having an OFF setting NOT working. If its a privacy issue than why have the setting to switch it off in the first place?
hey.. Sorry for hijacking the thread
I just came up with a thought.
The photo light does two levels of brightness as we know i.e Low brightness as a privacy feature while recording video and high brightness while switched on manually.
Is it possible(when the 2.1 source is released) that we can make a module to further increase power to the led to make it glow brighter so that we can actually use it as a led flash?? Just a thought
cheers
chetan
I just want to know if there is any of shutting it off thats it. You can hijack all you want once i get my answer ill move on. Im sure someone here knows how to shut off by some means thst doesnt require covering it.

I upgraded to the latest ROM version 3.14.831.3 couple of weeks ago, after that I found the camera flash light does not work when switch to always on mode. The flash light would be not on until I take a photo which acts the same as the auto mode.
I have tried the factory reset, which seems it only restore back to the latest ROM with clean settings, but the problem is still there.
Any one has same issue?
Yes, it's the new software version that does that.
I was thinking if we could take the files from the old camera software and put them in this version.
It's annoying not just if you want to use the phone as a flashlight (solved with torch app, but not that handy) but the picture quality in low light conditions totally sucks, because it won't focus when the flash is on.
This is by design... it's SUPPOSED to behave like that! The way the flash illuminated constantly like a torch/flashlight in the old ROM was very annoying... it wasted battery power, blinded your subjects and was distracting for everyone else around. You won't find a conventional 'proper' camera exhibiting this behaviour (actually, they can't anyway due to the way xenon flash tubes work).
The new flash behaviour in the new ROM mirrors how a conventional camera would behave and, IMO, is a big improvement.
As for focusing, I've never had much of a problem and think the HD2 does a very good job in low light most of the time. The only real solution to accurate low-light focusing is an IR focus-assist lamp.

If it is by design, HTC should disable the option in the camera mode to have the flash light always on. And also disable the flash light in the Camcorder too, it works totally fine in the Camcorder mode.
Plus they do not mention this change in the ROM description.

I think you're misunderstanding how the camera app is designed to work... when you select the option to force the flash on, you're telling the camera app to always fire the flash, regardless of the ambient light level. The flash LED is not supposed to stay lit the whole time that 'force flash on' is enabled and using the flash LED as a flashlight to see where you're going has got nothing to do with the camera app. By modifying the behaviour of the flash LED in the new ROM, HTC have replicated the behaviour of a regular camera and have enhanced the camera app in doing so. Having the flash LED constantly on has got nothing to do with taking better pictures.
When in video mode, of course the LED should be constantly on as its purpose in that mode is that of a video light. This is correct functionality.

I think you're right about this. What would be nice is if there was a way to have a little more control over it. For example - if you're in reaaally low light and want to take a picture you can't even see what it is you're trying to take a picture of unless the flash LED is on - so I understand the op's frustration. What would be ideal is if there was a way to tell the HD2 to activate the LED flash X seconds prior to taking the picture. That way you could make it come on for a second or two before it takes the pic so you can actually see what you're takin a pic of.
or, for those rare times when the light must be on when taking pics, you could always turn on the torch and then start the camera.
Any recommended torch app for HD2?

Hey guys ,
I was thinking about this today. Can the Heart Rate Monitor's Red LED be used as a notification light? And customize the way it flashes to tell you vaguely what the notification is about before you check your phone? I sometimes leave my phone upside down; Even the dedicated LED on the front isn't bright enough to see if there is any notification.
Anyways let me know,
Thanks
I want that too
I was wondering about the same thing
good to see other users on the same boat with me
I want it to be turned on in-call and as a notification LED
is that possible ? anyone ?
I thought a lot more people would be interested in this. Having notification LEDs on both sides of the phone and having the back LED really bright red.
Any update on this?
or at least a way to make the standard LED notification way brighter...my note 2 have a bigger and brighter LED than the Note 4, I hope someone can find a way to make this happen...
Same thing I asked and in hopes of an asnwer

i know that Emotion kernel has a few settings to send more voltage to the notification led, and to make it pulse instead of blink.
and it's also easy to make a profile in tasker to make the camera flashlight flash or pulse when you get a call or whatsapp message or whatever you want
you'd have to be pretty deep asleep or almost blind to miss that then
i don't think it's possible to use the heart rate sensor for notifications though, since it's a sensor and not a light
hope it helps a bit :good:

I did use the camera flash as a notification LED for calls. But I don't like it as it is too much like a flash (duh) For example my buddy was sitting in the train in NY and had his phone in his hand and when he got a call, the flash came on and there was a girl sitting in a short skirt across from him who thought he was taking upskirt pics, lol.
And having a red LED on the back is something different and a little better than a white bright flash.
I don't know much about phone coding, but would there be a way to trigger the sensor into thinking that it is taking a measurement, when you receive a notification?

it's probably possible if you can find the hardware path for the sensor, then you could use it with a tasker profile or make it in a mod.
But i have no idea how to find that path, and IF it even works then

Well I know for a fact that CM does have support for the sensor, and its not a hardware coded sensor as it can be used through the S Health app on the PLAY Store. So if you really wanted to know where to start looking I would say start there.
You could decompile the S Health app and see what portions of the system it access's to use the sensor and then develop from there.
I think it's rather hard, not to say impossible if you're not working for Samsung
