I've found several threads discussing this topic, but would appreciate it if someone enlightens me on the following (possibly also others that are interested in Video encoding for this awesome device):
1. What are the native decoding capabilities offered by SE's player? Are they accelerated?
2. From experience, what's a suggested encoding (Video format - MP4? Audio - ACC? bitrate?)
Thanks!

H.264, MPEG-4, WMA (only playable from the Windows Media player)
would be interested on answer to #2 too, I would think it's XVid and ACC but I'm quite new in this area.
When you say playable from Windows Media Player, do you mean through SE's player (which uses Windows Media Player) or directly through Media Player?

Hi Folks,
I haven't bought the shift yet but I'm certainly leaning heavily in that direction.
Can you please tell me about your experiences playing Divx video using the shift? I'm hearing mixed messages about the video capabilities of the machine some are saying it's no good for this some are saying it's fine which is it?
Please note I'm not talking about utube or wmv I'm talking divx avi files I would like to use this as a media player.
Cheers, Chris
I have the K-lite codec pack installed including Media Player Clasic (K-Lite Mega Codec Pack).
The Divx I used played verry shoothly, I do not exactly know how this file was encoded. It was just an episode of a TV series that I missed and downloaded to watch on the train. (350Mb for 50 minutes...)
Greetz,

it does play divx well. Never had problems. The real question, can it play mkv files? I'm trying that in windows xp (no chance in vista i suppose) and i get some huge lags between sound and image.

Did you try VLC?
Huib
Floreasca, Bucharest
Better use vlc: excellent performance, and no codec pack that can wreak havoc on your system
i've used gome player and media player classic, both configured to use "above average" process priority but no fun. gome has it's own internal codec system, only added matroska mkv codec.
I'll check what VLC has to offer.
I run VLC on my Shift and the only degradation I have seen on it is in full screen mode on the 1024x600 resolution. Definitely recommend VLC on the Shift.
I have a better experience with this:
Use Media Player Classic Home Cinema from here.
It has in the options the "EVR" Video Output which has a better image quality and lower CPU usage under Vista. And the GUI is better than VLC's ^^
And for the codecs I use the ffdshow tryouts.
I recommend clsid's latest Intel Compiler 10 builds, because they have a little performance improvement when using some post-processing filters.
Can we get some opinions on the best software to use for converting videos for use on the x1 as well as the configs for the software please?

3gp converter works well! convert your videos into MP4 if you do not wish to use third party player to play.
I do have a question, I have a few xvid movies, should I convert it to mp4 (so that I can use the media xperience panel). I understand media panel uses hardware acceleration, but not sure for what codec., anybody?
I've read that the most efficient player on the HD2 is the Windows Media Player Mobile, despite the fact that other applications support more video types and whatnots...
If I understood correctly, it's because the WMP uses some sort of hardware acceleration.
(If I'm wrong in any of this, please correct me!)
With this in mind, I wanted to prepare a few videos for my HD2 with the following tools at my disposal:
- Camtasia
- FFDShow
- Anything that's free
So far I was trying out Camtasia with FFDshows encoder, making XVID, DIVX or H.264... almost all of these rendered fine (with the exception of the H.264, which for some reason was not in synch with the audio), and could be played on my computer... however, after copying the files over to my HD2, WMP couldn't play any of them.
So... what can I do to make nice quality video files playable on my HD2?
Try this ...

Just be sure to set the resolution for the HD2

Also, Shaamaan, try coreplayer as it plays the best...

I beg to differ on that ....
It plays More but not better as coreplayer does not yet support hardware acceleration on the HD2, the built in player does ...
Personally I wish they would fix coreplayer, it is a very nice player ...
Also coreplayer is a retail app, so the link you posted is technically Warez, which are not allowed ...
Thanks for the link, watcher64!
EDIT: Albeit I tried it, and the audio was out of synch...
If I may ask a stupid question... what format IS supported by that WMP anyway? I mean, I assumed that at least ONE format generated by the FFDshow codec would work... while all of them failed.
MPEG4 / MP4 I know they work for sure. all the BRrips go str8 in to my TMOUS HTC HD2. not on my laptop now but I saw/have a SD/HD movie converter for this phone will upload for you asap.
Try XMedia Recode
It has a setting for HD2 use, and to be honest, I've copied a couple of Blu-Rays using this, and it is flawless within the HTC Video/Picture tab...
+1 for XMedia Recode. Easiest tool so far.
XMedia-Recode is better then the one I use...time to switch THX
The best player on my HD 2 I ever had, playing almost all formats smooth and brilliant is this one:

I've been trying to find a mobile video player that either enchances Windows Media Player Mobile or thorugh its own player.
Looking for something that can play different formats but mainly divix, .mkv and .avi files.
Any help is appreciated.
TIA
Derrick
Coreplayer!, supports Qtv acceleration. HTC Album also is good player, support Qtv and easy of use. TCPMP is slow for high bitrate or high resolution videos, not support Qvt aceleration but support external subtitles.
Sorry for my english
Ditto on Coreplayer. Do consider switching to h.264 .mp4 formats for SUPERIOR performance.
What kinds of subtitles does the default player the A500 ships with support, or does it support subtitles at all? I tried googling, but it only results in a gazillion different video converter apps and ads, nothing even remotely relevant or useful. And Acer's website ain't any better.
WereCatf - I think the two "out of the box" video players (Clear.Fi and Nemo) both suck and only support MP4 codec movies. If you download the free "MoboPlayer" from the Marketplace you will find that it supports MKV - MPV - MOV - MP4 - AVI - M4V plus other video codecs and it also supports popular subtitle formats such as SRT - ASS - SAA etc. I have not been able to throw anything at it that it hasn't been able to handle. Big bonus it's FREE !!
The reason I asked about the default players is that I don't want to waste battery unnecessarily on decoding video in software, ie. I will always be transcoding video to .mp4/h.264 just to save battery.
Throwing mkv files or xvids or something at MoboPlayer will use software decoding, so that's a no-no for me.
Mobo/Rock reportedly will show external subs in hardware mode. So extract the sub to external and convert to MP4.

Thanks, that's very helpful then.
mVideoplayer
I use mVideoplayer which supports subtitles.
I often use it to add srt subtitles to mp4 video.
And also it has a built-in subtitle search OpenSubtitles which helpful in searching subtitles..
Hope you like it....
