I think I saw something about this happening with Bluetooth, but apparently when i press the top "power" button and the screen goes blank, WIFI goes off. Anyone else suffer from the same problem?
yup, not sure if a reg hack or changing a setting might work. however unlike bluetooth the wifi does come back on.
This is the standard behaviour of Wifi with WM. If you want to change it you can install Advanced Configuration Tools and change it so the activity keeps up. But remember it will drain your battery.
like the guy said...schaps advaced config should do the trick
can anyone point me to the option in advanced config?
ok, i found the option. unfortunately it has no effect. does anyone have any other idea?
yes it does work. i use it myself. in advanced config use the right soft key button: menu>more settings>connections>Enable wi fi on standby mode>Reboot fone.
Should work 100%

i tried exactly that without success.
i want to save power by disabling the screen while letting skype stay connected via wifi. about 20secs after the screen goes blank the wifi connection gets disabled. when the screen is turned on again wifi automatically activates and connects to my network.
any ideas?
ps: i had that effect on 3 different roms:
X1i_O2_DE_CDF1215-1634_R1AA019
X1i_GENERIC_DE_CDF1215-3303_R2AA006
Bxsteez Lite 1.02
i'm also having that problem now that i flashed to Portuguese firmware, i didn't have the problem with the generic uk firmware...
Usually i would let my phone with wifi turned on while using messenger, and even during the night i would get messages from ppl, meaning the connection was active, and when i woke up it would have only drained some 10% of battery... but now with this R2 firmware when i turn off the display the wifi connection goes off in less than 5s... it's annoying and makes it really impractical to use wifi internet connection that way...
And yes, i did use advanced config, didn't work
which version of AC has this setting? 2.02.0.2.0 doesn't have anything regarding wifi in connection settings
Yeah changing the AC setting didn't work for me either. Wifi still turned off...
i made an observation that is maybe interesting. I activated the option "Enable wi fi on standby mode" in schaps ac. when i put the phone into standby mode by pushing the power button wifi remains active. if i turn off the screen only (using s2u2) wifi gets deactivated.
so the option in schaps ac has an impact on the behaviour of the wifi. anyway the option is pretty much useless as in standby mode skype is not working and in blank screen mode the wifi transmitter is turned off.
Works for me:
These registry edits keep WiFi enabled in Standby Mode but make sure to turn WiFi off when you don't need it to save as much battery life as possible.

that is exactly what schaps ac does. unfortunaltely this is working only for standby not for "screen off" mode. ("screen off" mode can be activated by for example s2u2, windows media player (by assigning a button to that feature) or mortsaver)

What is the difference between standby and screen off mode? I haven't had the wifi ever shut off on my after making the registry changes I posted when the screen goes black (when I do it by pressing the power button or when it goes black on its own).

in standby mode the cpu is hibernating, i.e. applications like skype or an audio player (like TCPMP) are not running anymore.
if the screen in shut off all the software on the ppc continues to run.
you can see the difference when playing audio with the windows meda player. if you press the power button playback stops. if you turn off the screen playback continues. (turning off the screen in wmp can be done via menu->options->keys->activate/disable screen (the last option). just assign the camera button to that feature)
Is a use case for the wifi to be working when the CPU is hibernating?
in case you configured the messaging application to download your e-mails for example every 5 minutes, the cpu is activated every 5 minutes in order to allow the application to fetch new e-mails. you can see this effect my playing music on your phone and putting it into standby. from time to time it plays your music for some seconds.
in order to provide for example the messaging app with network access wifi can configured to remain active even in standby.

thats cant be true.
otherweise i wont be able to play music or do other stuff while my phone is in StandBy
i guess the problem are these Options:
Network-> Turn Off WiFi if no acticity (default yes)
and/or
Network-> WiFi auto off : 2 Minutes
skype prolly wont do much while its waiting for an connection/message (no activity). disable it and increase the timoutime. that, paired with the "turn off wifi in standby" worked for my MSN messenger least.
I have a suggestion/idea:
Try running PocketPlayer or CorePlayer in the background (put it on repeat). They both play music while in standby and PocketPlayer can't be paused or killed...
Tip: If you set CorePlayer to speed "10%", it'll use less battery on MP3s...
Then use Wifi. Does that help?

Hello,
In the past I am sure that my display screen went off after a certain time during a phone call (saving on battery life). I have noticed recently that the screen stays on the whole time, regardless of call length. I have looked through all the settings I can think off, and can't seem to find one relevant to auto screen shut off during a call.
I have installed Pocket Bluetooth Tools and PocketZenPhone (previously I was using Myhonerofiles).
Is there a setting I am missing, or some software that I can use to have an auto screen shut off during a call.
Many thanks for any help.
The screen will not turn off if Bluetooth headset is being used.
Normally, the screen will not turn off if there is any serial port activity (like while connected through activesync)
Are you sure that in Settings/Backlight/Bttey Power: the "Turn Off Backlight" option is selected?, it should be selected to turn the device screen off after 30 seconds or so.
I use a car kit running on bluetooth, and the screen goes off after 30 seconds!
I've set both the power and the back light to go off after 1 minute. There is not normally a problem and the screen powers off ok, unless I'm on a call (with or without a bluetooth headset).
There is an option in JGUI Phone Profiles that does this.
If you no longer have it installed then you won't get that effect.
When I uninstalled Phone Profiles I missed the screen off option so much I reistalled it just for that.

So does mine.
After installing Pocket Bluetooth Tools (PBT), my screen won't turn off while on call. If I do turn it off during a conversation, my bluetooth headset cuts out while the other person is still on the phone and won't be able to recover it until I hang up.
If I have the timer working for the PBT, then my autoshut off will work, but that's after I change the timer from 60 seconds to 10 seconds in the registry. If I disable the timer, the autoshut off will work. So if you don't want to play around with the registry, then I suggest leaving PBT timer on.
But either way, if the timer is on or off, during a call, it won't turn off automatically with PBT installed. I like PBT because I was able to quickly connect to my headset faster than the built-in MS Bluetooth Stack.
I guess its a case of balancing the use of Pocket Bluetooth tools with the power saving function of having an auto screen cut off during a call. I'm not sure what is more important to me just now.
I am reluctant to return to My Phone Profiles. I am really enjoying the latest version of PocketZenPhone. I think I will make a request to have autoscreen included in a future version. Who knows, I might get lucky!

IF you have Pocket Bluetooth installed, then while on call, it will not automatically turned off. But if you turned it off manually, while on call, it will cut out from the bluetooth headset and I find no way to get it back yet.
I use my 614c as a Wifi-walkman using GSPlayer layer as a streaming audio player. This works well, however the battery life is very short because the phone never turns off the backlight but rather only dims it down. GSPlayer has a turn off display option which turns off the LCD but not the backlight. I suspect that this feature works correctly on other PDAs turning off the backlight but on 614c it just dims down.
Has anybody successfully been able to turn the backlight off while the phone is active? There is the "standby" mode where it turns off the backlight but that means that the phone just sleeps and it looses its wifi connection. You can't use this mode while listening to MP3s.

May be you can try Slide 2 Play and use this trick :
The behaviour of S2P can be altered by changing the following registry values stored at \HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\A_C\S2P\
- OffLCD - the no. of timeout seconds that S2P will turn off the screen when using battery; default is 25.

Please bear with me as this may be a dumb newbie question. I searched every post on the Imagio section here and at PPC and was unable to find an answer.
Got the Imagio for my wife and she's loving it (we had Storms previously- bad, bad mojo). She uses Groovefish to stream music and the stock dimmer setting will shut down the player after the time limit is reached. No problem, right? Changed the setting to stop this (never auto shut down on battery power).
Now, the screen will dim somewhat when left idle, but never shuts down all the way. It's dim but still active. She's been having to change the setting every time in order to not kill the battery.
Should the screen power down all the way while leaving the device active (like hitting the "shut off screen option" after holding the end button)? If not, is there a way to do this?
Thanks for any insight you may be able to provide. I've done nothing but Blackberries for years and this is my first real foray into WinMo.
Try to check the power settings. Go to the Settings Tab and push All settings at the bottom. From there go to System > Power > then click the Advanced tab. That should have settings to turn off the screen after 1 min or 30 seconds.
Thanks for the quick reply. I probably should have been a bit more clear.
It is in that menu that I have been manipulating the settings. There are two options for battery power. There is one to "turn off backlight" after x amount of time, the other is to "turn off device". With backlight set to 30 (or whatever) and device disabled, the screen never completely goes off.
It functions properly with "turn device off" enabled, but interrupts Groovefish when playing. This does not interfere with the native TF3D media player. While its not the end of the world if she ends up having to change that setting to use the program, it would be nice to be able to disable the screen with a partial shutdown (and extra battery drain when using that application).
Cheers!
Thats interesting, seems like its the program thats doing that. I have Opera, FM radio, email client, etc. running all day without it crashing. I have seen this before with Internet Explorer where i would leave it running connected to a website. then when i check back IE is gone and i have to start it again. By any chances is this a website or an installable app that you are using?
Groovefish is a streaming music client that is installed on the device
BTW, it is incredibly cool if you don't have it yet. Stream just about any song you want for free (legally).

I use g-trigger to shake my phone to turn off the display works great! Just disable the shake to turn it back on.
I'll give it a shot and see if the application stays running. Many thanks!
Actually I think backlight off is happening when it "dims". You need the screen to go off, not just the backlight. Try using xdaShutdown to go into Lightsout mode and see if that works for you. The program can be found here:

Skins in the same thread as well.
Hi,
When fully charged my battery lasts about 30 hours, which is totally useless! Therefore I am trying to set all possible powersaving options to the most "efficient".
I have:
- stopped animated weather backgrund.
- stopped automatic updates on weather forecast.
- lowered the background light to 40%
I believe one of the most efficient ways of getting longer battery capacity is turning off the 3G, but I can't get ActiveSync to work without it beeing on. When I turn the 3G off, and then ActiveSync, the 3G stays on when sync is done.
I only need 3G when surfing web-pages, I don't really care if synchronizing e-mail and calendar takes 10 or 30 seconds. Can anybody help me out here?
Any other settings to keep powerusage to a minimum?
Shorten backlight duration.
Regularly kill background apps.
Press power button manually after each use.
Disable vibration in setting > personalize > Vibration.
Turn off tapping sound.
Enable pocket mode in ring-tones settings.
Use short ring-tones.
Enable 3G/Wi-Fi/Bluetooth when required.
Make Bluetooth discoverable for 60 seconds only (not sure whether it saves battery)
set dim backlight & off g-sencor. it helps a lot.
So I bought tasker months ago and barely ever used it. It's soo ridiculously powerful but i'm way to lazy to take the time to get a hold of the very steep learning curve (at least for me).
I really want to utilize one of these days because it's really a remarkable app that shows off the power of our phones.
I was just curious if any of you use it and what some of your favorite profiles are.
Also, is there some sort of 'how to use tasker for dummies" out there that I could check out? lol
Tasker does have a learning curve. I think it would be easier if they had a desktop environment to create profiles on, but I digress.
Yes, I was like you and bought the app and shelved it since I didn't have time to mess with it. I ran into some free time and dusted the app off. This is what profiles I've setup so far.
1) GPS turns on when apps that I've designated (ex. maps, navi, weather, etc) are launched. GPS turns off when the apps close.
2) Battery <5% turns screen brightness all the way down (coupled with setCPU with an under-clock with the same criteria will have my phone last as along a possible for emergencies). There's more functionality I want to add to this profile.
3) When a headset is plugged in, it sets my media volume and pulls up a menu of music apps for me to select.
4) Home Wifi (overly complicated). I search for the cell tower that I get reception at home (as long as I'm not in airplane mode). When in range of it, the phone search for my network SSID. When found Wifi turns on and connects to my home wifi and turns off the cell tower search (so if my cell signal goes to crap, wifi stays on). When I leave out of my network SSID, wifi shuts off and cell tower search is turned on. This code required some debugging as it wasn't so stable at first attempt.
5) Find phone (my favorite). I can send a text to my phone from any other cell phone. When the text is received, the phone will turn on GPS to find the coordinates and will return a text message to the originating cell phone with a link to google maps location (its bad ass!). Once the message is sent, the speaker volume gets turned all the way up and an mp3 of my choosing gets played (you can bet its an long, annoying, loud, and noticeable song). The final straw is the screen gets locked with a code. I need to investigate the possibility to remote wipe my personal data if necessary.
Best thing to do is to go into the app menu and select browse profiles >> user wiki. Check out the profiles they have there. Download them to you phone. Then go to app menu >> profile data >> import one profile (or task). Select the ones you just downloaded. Check them out, alter them to fit your needs, and you start to learn the syntax, what commands are available, and what's possible.
Good luck! Its a time sink when you get started.
GPS automatically turns on when I open a GPS-centric app.
Wi-Fi automatically turns on when I open a Wi-Fi-centric app.
When I connect my bluetooth headphones it asks me which music app I want to open.
My screen goes as dim as possible when I open my alarm clock at night.
It makes Widgetlocker open whenever my phone goes idle... since it doesn't always want to work.
1) I have a night profile that turns down all the notifications and ringer except the alarm for night time, then returns the settings to normal in the morning.
2) When It connects to the specific bluetooth unit in my car, wifi turns off (no need in a moving car), 3g comes on and media audio goes up for my streaming music. After disconnect wifi comes back on.
3) I have a google maps gps text message in case I misplace my phone
4) I have home and work profiles that turn on and off 3g once they connect to wifi.
Been toying with variables and setting text widgets from minimalistic text. works nice.
All in all very handy application.
Their website has some sample profiles on their wiki at:
http://tasker.wikidot.com/profile-index
1) Shut off "Low battery LED" when battery is at or below 14%
2) Turn off capacitive buttons backlight (home, menu, back, search) and keep it off
3) Since I use the notification pulldown power mod, I have a profile that checks if my wimax is on or off when I reboot or shutdown my phone so it can shut it off when the phone boots if it was off before the shutdown/reboot.
4) Tasker switches my governors for me. No setcpu for anything. Governor is switched to conservative when the screen is off, interactive when the screen is on, smartass for all games, and ondemand for web browsing and anything the other governors don't cover.
5) GPS turns on and off when it's needed (maps, navigation, sky map, etc.)
6) Incoming call LED blinking is stopped (since I leave my phone on sound mode almost all the time)
7) All notification LEDs are stopped (especially since gmail still triggers the LED)
8) Display rotation is turned on and off when it's needed (when in the sense ui it is off and when in web browser, certain apps or games it is on)
9) When my phone boots, tasker checks a variable for my wimax and shuts it off if it needs to
10) When I'm done with a phone call tasker sends me back to my main homescreen
11) Widget that changes my hosts file for adblocking or no adblocking on the fly. The name of the widget also changes according to its status (Enabled or Disabled)
12) When charging, the left LED is shut off and the Wimax LED is used instead.
13) If my screen has been off for more than 2 hours (when I am sleeping) the sound is silenced and airplane mode is activated.
I have more that I don't use but these are my daily profiles.
If I receive a text message from 11pm - 6:30am, I do not get notified and my phone responds with a ZZZZZZZ I am sleeping and will check in the morning.
I would love to get a hold of the profiles you guys are running. Lots of these would be helpful, at least as a learning tool.

I have setup a Dropbox folder we could drop profiles into. PM me your emails and I will send you an invite to the folder with a link. Profiles are small so shouldn't chew up much data.
Please name your profiles descriptive so we know what it does etc.
Can the profiles be grouped in the dropbox? I have tasks that use multiple profiles.
From my EVO when I should probably be doing something else instead.

1) Silence all sounds and put on vibrate during work hours (9-9PM).
2) Turn on GPS for specific apps (Navigation, Maps, Antenna, etc.)
3) Turn off when closing those apps.
4) Pop up menu with PowerAMP, Pandora, FM Radio options when inserting headphone.
5) Close those apps when remove headphone.
6) Pop up PowerAMP, Pandora when connecting with BT headphone.
7) Close those apps when disconnecting.
8) TXT my BB the coordinates, batt. life if I TXT S.O.S. to my phone (in case it's lost/stolen).
1) when i get w/ 50 meters of the office (or home). home and office are slightly different but the same idea.
- turn off bluetooth
- turn on wifi
- turn off 4G
- change wallpaper
- reduce ringer volume
(when i get out of 50meters...radios toggle)
- Bluetooth and 4G are on
- wifi is off
2) Quiet Time
- between 2300 and 0700
- notification sound 0
- notification vibrate is off
3) Quiet Cam - currently the AOSP camera has an obnoxiously loud CLICK.
- when camera app is active
- system sounds = 0
4) OnCall
- monitors my work calendar for the "OnCall" appointment.
- notification volume = 6
- change wallpaper (i'm on call for days at time, so this is handy reminder)
* wish i could increase only the 'work email' notification alert (i use two email clients so i can at least have a 'work email alert' and a 'personal email alert'...sadly, tasker doesn't seem able to take advantage of that.)

I do the following:
1. Turn off sound/ringers at certain locations, during certain times (Church, kid's school, etc).
2. Turn on WiFi at home or at work.
3. Overnight mode - automatically turn off WiFi & BT, lower screen brightness, filter calls from all but family, throttle CPU down to min 128000 max 256000. (uses max 1% battery and kept off charger for 8 hours).
4. Overclock CPU 10% for normal operation, underclock (min 128000 max 256000) when screen off (really good on batt).
5. Automatically ramp down CPU clocks as battery charge diminishes.
6. Turn down ringer volume when BT headset connected.
7. Silence phone when meeting in calendar with busy status.
A few others, but this is the main group of profiles.
1.) Turn on GPS when using Maps, turn it off otherwise
2.) Silence ringers during work hours
Not much, obviously I could do a lot more with it.

A lot of these are usually pretty simple, but some can get pretty complicated.
Have you looked at the tutorials / walkthroughs / user listing around the web?
Think of the context as the 'in this instance' and the 'task' as the 'do this.'
http://tasker.dinglisch.net/
http://tasker.wikidot.com/profile-index
These can give you some suggestions and can also shed light on how to use the app in varying scenarios.
A lot of people are using ones that are easy enough to figure out, or have been listed as basic but popular tasks (and can be found at either those links or elsewhere - google 'tasker profiles').
For instance, silencing ringer at night; Context - Time / 2200 to 0600. Task - Ringer Volume Zero / Notification Volume Zero / AutoSync Off.
That's obviously an extremely simple one, but again - context (trigger) and task (desired action).
