Guys,
Does anyone know of a utility or tweak to stop the automatic starting up of GPRS (Web data access)? I am finding on a regular basis that it automatically does this and I have to keep turning it off.
Any ideas??
Hawk
I dont know how to stop it from activating, I had the same issue with my old Touch, BUT if you goto the thread below...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=452505
...and install the HD Tweak program, there is an option where you can program in an auto disconnect after a predetermined time (i.e. 1 minute).
Not exactly what you wanted, but it might help!

Just found how to do this only last night.
Start/settings/connections/connections/advanced/Select Networks button then choose Programs that automatically connect to the internet should connect using "my ISP".
That should stop it automatically starting and internet applications will only use data when wifi is on. If you want to use it again do same but select ......should use GPRS.
Have to say it should be easier and more obvious than this!

I have asked my phone company to disable my GPRS access already and I have a wireless router to use Wi-Fi. However, I must admit that the constant attempts by Windows Mobile to connect my GPRS which always result in a failure notification is rather annoying.
Is there a method to disable these notifications?
Reg edit
There's a registry edit that will disable the automatic connection, or if you have advanced configuration tool you can do it there. If you don't have advanced configuration tool you can download it here.
I use pre-pay, and as the data charges are high, I only use wifi. I use an app called nodata. It lists your GPRS connections, and allows you to disable them so that they won't be used. I got this app from crc's device update, but I'm sure you could find it easily.

Oh, I recently upgraded my phone's OS to Schap's WM6 Pro, so it came with the OS. I did as you asked (disabled the auto-attached for GPRS), but unfortunately, it didn't seem to work as it continued attempting to connect, and the notification still appeared.
Thank you to you for responding. I appreciate the help!

You mean MoDaCo NoData? Oh yes, I installed the app, and used it to toggle the GPRS off, and you're right. It worked perfectly and the message does not appear to be coming up anymore! Thank you so much for you help!
Hay all,
I downloaded the HDTweak last night an set it up to disconnect from a data connection after 1 min.
A mate sent me a picture message which uses Orange Internet / Orange MMS.
Sure enough after 1 mine after it had been recieved an MMS it dissconnected.
But later in the evening I got another MMS I checked an it hadn't disconnected & had been on for 45 mins!
Basic:
1. Is there a better way for this to DEFO disconnect after recieveing an MMS?
2. If left open are there any charges?
3. I've noticed it go from G to H to E during / after it has recieved an MMS would the
change affect it auto disconnetion?
I'm quite new to all this an havin't done any ROM-ing an don't really want to just yet.
Many Thanks
I too am having a similar problem (and new to Win Mobile). I'm on the stock Orange phone, ROM version 1.19.61.1 WWE.
If I use Opera or Email, once I close the application (and I'm making sure its closed and not in background). The data connection stays active (confirmed by checking Comm Manager).
I installed HDTweak and set disconnect to 1 minute, however after leaving it for 30mins the connection was still there.
For such an advanced phone, there must be a way to disconnect the data connection when the applications using it have shutdown?
The data connection will only disconnect if its not being used.
Although u maynot think its being used, apps like Quick GPS, RSS Hub, Manila Weather, Manila Stock have an auto upate option.
If you check the options for these apps and make sure they aint set to auto update then that might help solve the prob.
Personally I use 'No Data' software which gives you the option to 'toggle' either Internet, MMS and WAP on or off.
I mostly surf via wifi and update weather, emails, stock etc via wifi so its a handy piece of software to have as I have Internet & WAP disabled constantly so phone only uses wifi connection I have active.
If you want to use Orange Internet via data connection (GPRS etc) you can 'toggle' internet On, then once you have finished using it, toggle it Off again

Open each app i.e. QuickGPS then click on Menu > Options > and untick 'Auto download when data expires'
For weather & stock tabs, click on each then menu > settings > and make sure auto download is unticked
Follow same procedure for other apps installed
There is a very easy alternative that I use always....Press the end call button once (vibrates once) that is pre assigned to end data connection.
You should see the icon change form 3G/HSPDA to the earth logo and hey presto all offline.
Hi!
Going abroad and dont want to risk a huge data roaming-bill. Is there any way to turn off data roaming? Preferrably Wifi would still work, but if that's not possible then all data off.
HD Tweak is a nice little application which includes an option to disable data connections all together. I'm pretty sure this option will prevent you recieving data even if you tried to (ie not just background tasks) but will still allow wi-fi to work.
NoData

You might want to give "NoData" a go. This very small application (.cab) install creates an icon called NoData in programs. If you select this it runs the small app and asks what data connection you want to disable or re-enable.
It is ideal for what you want and many use it. Take a look at Paul's work here on Modaco (another good WM site): http://www.modaco.com/content/pocket-pc-software/246171/new-free-utility-nodata/

Install attached file then run to toggle both settings and switch internet on or off.
Or you could use BsB tweak to disable data connections...
Both work
Both work like a charm!
Thankss from me and my phone-bill!
Timo
By default application sees you are roaming and don't download anything automatically. (browsers are not blocked, but, it's not automatic download.) As soon you have Wifi connection working, they'll download info. Almost every application let you choose if you want to download when roaming.
Hi,
I'm having a weird issue with the data connection.
When i turn it off, it will automatically turn itself on when any application that requires internet tries to connect.
I've read somewhere that the cause of this is an application that has auto-scheduling tries to connect (e.g. email, weather, ...). But this cant be, right?
Isn't the meaning of data connection "OFF" that no application what-so-ever has internet acces. Even when they sync automaticly...?
Have a look here.
Hope it helps.
download NoData u can turn off your data connection with that, or just modify the internet settings
The weather tab, stocks tab, facebook, twitter could be configured to download data periodically.
My advice is to remove these tabs and services. They're useless and a tremendous resource hog anyway.
Use the long-press end key to cut off data connection manually.
Install "Data Controller" app to disable and enable data connection whenever you want to. Disable it most of the time, during regular use. This will prevent any accidental or unwanted preconfigured access to internet. Enable it in special situations if you really need to use it. Disable it again after use.
Data Controller is easier to use than NoData. Although, both of them works fine.
Use this app to disable internet access only. Leave the mms access enabled. That way, you'll be able to receive mms anytime. Mms shuts itself down automatically after every use. So you don't have to disable this one.
